Cyrel arrives at the front of the bookstore. Through the front window, he can see a short man behind the counter talking to an older woman, with a small stack of books between them.

Slipping into the bookstore, Cyrel feels his shoulders tense up and his frown deepen.

He disliked books and the people who read them. In his experience, only layabouts read books - frivolous intellectuals and housewives who wanted to live vicariously in safety, rather than facing the dangers of reality.

With a dismissive sniff, he wanders the aisles, touching the spines and thumbing through a few tomes, trying to get his bearings in an unfamiliar environment. “Shouting in a City of Echoes,” he mutters, narrowing his eyes to read the titles, “Fungal Growths in the Black Riage, The Talking Ape of the Caecilian Jungle... Who writes this drivel?

Plucking a few books off the shelf, Cyrel retreats to a small table and examines his findings like an archaeological dig. He spends the next few hours leafing through books on chemistry and forensic analysis, attempting to marry his rudimentary understanding with a practical application.

Some time later,  he approaches the counter with a slender book in hand. “Is this the best one you have?” he barks at the attendant, holding up the book so Aaron can see it. “How much?”

The afternoon passes quietly in the bookstore. Nobody bothers Cyrel as he reads, though other customers sometimes wander close enough for him to overhear their conversations with each other.

"Quite a shame about Wendy White," a woman says in hushed tones as they browse slowly past Cyrel. "Her husband, lost in the line of duty when they were already so deep in debt that they had to pawn all of their children, and all her sisters furious about that. Do you think she would appreciate this book of roses?"
"Oh, no point in giving her anything now," says the woman walking with her. "She's turning her life over to the Crown."
"Oh no, so drastic!" says the first woman. "Does she really have no other way to clear the debts? I will really miss her."

A while later, a young man says as he wanders past, "That Montague guy from Guran is really prospering from his trade now. Have you heard? He's even hiring assistant cart drivers."
"Yes, he's found a wealthy buyer in Jargolamis for all those baubles," says the middle-aged man with him. "Why don't you go become a cart driver?"
The young man sighs and mutters, "yes, Dad."

By the time Cyrel is ready to get up and buy something, the sky has darkened and the bookstore has mostly emptied out in favor of dinner elsewhere. Aaron smiles politely back at Cyrel. "The Alchemist's Handbook is an excellent choice if you're just starting out and only want one book," he replies. "For three shins. Were you hoping to learn how to do something in particular?"

Meanwhile, Jez arrives on aneen-back at the front of the bookstore. Dinner rush in the market square is just starting, and the area around the bookstore is relatively deserted.

Setting the book on the counter, Cyrel drums his fingers on the cover and peers at Aaron as if sizing him up.

“I need to study a toxin and find some kind of antidote… or a protection against it, if nothing else. Will this book tell me how to do that?”

"I'm not a beginner... " he interjects after a pause, somewhat defensively. "Not exactly. I know how to brew and mix... But finding a tonic is a... new application for old tricks, shall we say."

Jez dismounts, and takes a moment to remove all traces of ownership that he can from the aneen and its saddle. He takes the aneen around to a nearby alley and ties it up, out of sight of prying eyes.

He then proceeds to enter the shop. Upon spotting Cyrel, he looks for an aisle of books from which to covertly watch him as he barters with the bookseller.

The bookshop owner doesn't seem to notice Jez as he enters. He smiles again at Cyrel. "Ah, toxins. You might try How to Make, Use, and Defend Against Harmful Potions. It's one of the guidebooks in the Assassin's Guild series. I believe that one is four shins, and you're required to sign a waiver that you won't use any of its contents against this bookstore or the Assassin's Guild." He points to a tall shelf at the far corner of the bookstore, which is somewhat hidden in shadow. "If you're also looking for equipment, I would recommend Alice's Apothecary, two doors down on your right. She sells anything you might need and also rents table space."

Jez finds himself looking at shelves full of history texts on one side and philosophy on the other.

Cyrel wrinkles is brow at the price, but acquiesces without a fight. "Fine. I'll take the one you mentioned and sign... whatever is it you're asking for."

His fingers vanish within an interior pocket, sliding four shiny coins out and placing them on the counter. The fat coin purse looped onto his belt remains untouched.

"Assassin's guild..." he pauses, mulling over the concept. "Your town has an official guild dedicated to murderers? How... interesting. I wouldn't have guessed. Trincal seems so... provincial."

Perhaps, just this once, a book would prove worth reading... Otherwise, he was wasting a disgusting amount of shins on something that would just weigh down his bag.

Aaron slides the coins the rest of the way across the counter and puts them somewhere underneath. He pulls out a form and a quill pen, which he slides back across the counter to Cyrel. Then he gets out from behind the counter, stepping down off a platform as he does so and turning out to be even shorter than he first appeared. He walks over to the bookcase and pulls the volume that Cyrel is buying and brings it back to the counter.

"It's not our assassin's guild," he finally replies as he gets back behind the counter, turning to face Cyrel with a polite smile. "The series is imported from Luigolamis. Is there anything else I can help you with today?"

Books on toxins by assassins... This Cyrel doesn't do things by halves! Seems like Cyrel was the type of sneaky fellow that Jez aspired to be one day. At least, the man seemed to be wealthy enough and might have a trick or three to impart.

Jez chooses a book from the shelves at random and emerges from behind the bookcase, walking calmly over to the counter beside Cyrel despite their surprise. "Ah, perhaps you can help me. I was looking at this book here -" looking down at the cover, he reads, "'An Abbreviated History of Medicine Volume 16: Cures for Warts, Boils and Sores', but could not help overhearing my friend Cyrel here, for whom I have some important confidential information about his friends." The last is said while staring meaningfully at Cyrel and indicating with his eyes that they should go outside. "Won't you accompany me, Cyrel?"

“I knew a woman in the guild, a long time ago…” Cyrel mumbles, mostly to himself as he looks over the legal document. Trailing off into thoughtful silence, he scribbles his name down and passes the paper back to Aaron.

As Jez seemingly materializes out of nowhere, Cyrel swings around in alarm, his hand instinctively moving to the hammer hanging off his waist. When he recognizes the “city guide” from the noodle shop, he relaxes somewhat - still keeping his guard up, in case the situation turns south.

“If Cobin has a wart, I really don’t want to know” he frowns at the medical textbook. “… Although I would like to know why you have confidential information about my associates.”

Unbuttoning the straps on his rucksack, Cyrel stuffs the book rather unceremoniously between his dirty laundry and a stale bit of bread. He moves to follow Jez outside.

Cyrel was not accustomed to being caught off guard. He would have to keep an eye on Jez in the future … Perhaps the lad had potential.

Aaron looks just as surprised to see Jez standing there, but only says, "Two shins. If you're wanting to buy that." His tone indicates that he's pretty sure Jez doesn't care about the book. Without waiting for a reply, he picks up Cyrel's signed document, glances at it, and goes to file it in his desk.

Back outside the bookshop, there's quite a din in the distance about the buying and selling of food, but the street right outside is relatively quiet.

Jez leaves the book at the counter and walks outside with Cyrel, taking him to the alley with the aneen and looking about to ensure no-one overhears. He looks sideways at the strange bald man, evaluating how much of the story he is willing to divulge.

"After speaking with you and your friends, I saw that you weren't going to give me a chance to prove my worth to a group of experienced adventurers such as yourselves. So I decided to take the initiative and visited a nearby noble's estate, who I've discovered is employing Angulan Knights. I saw a big fight and it seems they captured your giant gorilla and blue giant friends. I also saw Ajeni at first but then lost track of her while I was trying to get out."

Leaning forward and looking earnestly at Cyrel, he continues, "Here's the deal. I'm young but I'm talented, and I'm looking for someone to give me some pointers in the adventuring trade. I'll help you to go there and to get them out, on the condition that I get an equal share of loot should it come around, and that you vouch for me as required. I can see you're a very capable man with much experience from whom I could learn a lot, and I assure you that my discretion is absolute."

Sticking his hand out, he smiles. "Do we have a deal, Mr. Cyrel?"

OOC: Jez is assuming that everyone else is in the same "adventurer" group, having no idea that they had all somewhat recently come together. Also, that flattery will get him somewhere.

Cyrel examines the alley before following Jez. Narrow, dark places in a city were perfect for an ambush and he did not yet trust the young ‘entrepreneur.’

He looks at the outstretched hand, seeming to consider it for several long moments.

“Here’s what I think…” he muses, pulling a cigarette from his jacket pocket. “You’re right. My team and I, we’re onto a big haul… it will be very lucrative for everyone involved.”

“Rescuing my associates will go a long way towards proving your capabilities … but if you want a full cut …”

Cyrel sticks the cigarrete in the corner of his mouth, not lighting yet, thinking.

“My counter offer is this. Everything you asked for … sealed and done. However, I want a promise from you. There is a monster chasing myself and my party. When it returns - and it will return - Cobin will try to negotiate with it and coddle it like a lost thuman, because that is who Cobin is.”

“You will help me to kill it. Whatever the rest of them might want to do, the creature will die… And if you’re also a bleeding heart, rest assured this monster is not. It will kill us all, if we do not act first.”

“Do we still have an accord?”

If Jez’s hand is still offered, Cyrel will shake it and seal the agreement.

Jez's eyes widen slightly at the mention of a "big haul", as well as at the discussion of a monster. However, this was the first real chance he had been offered, and despite some niggling reservations, he didn't really have many other options.

He takes the outstretched hand and nods solemnly. "We have a deal, Cyrel. I'll help you with rescuing your friends and in killing the monster, and I get an equal cut of the loot. Now, do you know Lord Pophar's estate? I was sneaking around in there and managed to pose as a gardener - hence my current outfit. I stole this aneen while trying to get out, because I tripped some kind of alarm breaking into the main manor building and an army of seskii-sized ants attacked. In any case, it seems as though your blue friend Cobin and the gorilla Regullus were caught by the Angulan Knights and some of the grounds-keepers. I tried to rescue Cobin but he dodged my lasso."

Pointing to the aneen, he adds, "I managed to bluff my way into convincing them to give me this, but I doubt the charade will last. We need to ask around as to how these ants are controlled and how we might disable them."

As Jez and Cyrel seal their deal, two young women walk past the alley on the way to the food stalls. "It's the Celestines again," says one. "They want another offering by tomorrow night."

"Oh dear," says the other. "But we don't have anyone left to give."

The two hurry past, not noticing Jez or Cyrel.

“Knights … And Cobin couldn’t manage to steer clear of them, could he? No, I imagine he got caught trying to save his ape friend, or some other hapless mutant…” Cyrel snorts, lighting his cigarette and taking a slow drag.

“Now, what to do about a nest of ants …” Swinging his pack around, Cyrel takes out the book he had just purchased and leafs through the pages, looking for a section on poisons.

“Exterminating them might be easier than controlling them… ” He pauses, flicking some ash off one of the pages. “I assume the ants belong to Pophar. Is he working with the Angulans, or would he be open to ... negotiation?"

The poisons section takes up about half the book, with many different kinds roughly divided into solids, liquids, and gases. Each poison comes with a full description of uses, and recipes for both the poison and antidote. There seems to be a heavy emphasis on poisons that affect humans and abhumans, but there are a few that will work on other living things. Cyrel eventually finds some for large insects.

Jez tries to stay quiet and observant while Cyrel reads through the book, but curiosity gets the better of him.

"I'm not sure how this Lord Pophar would respond to negotiation, but my experience of people with money is that the more they have, the less you can trust them. The Angulan Knights seem to be working for him, or at the minimum bringing him gifts for some reason. Anyway, did you overhear that lady before? Who are the Celestines? Do they have anything to do with the Angulan Knights?"

“Can’t trust anyone, money or not … Everyone’s in it for themselves …” Cyrel mutters, waving his hand at the smoke lingering in the air, brushing it aside to get a better look at the open page.

“No idea what a Celestine is.” He frowns, turning the book to get a better look at one of the recipes. “I did overhear a woman about an hour ago, talking about pawning children … It could be related I suppose. If these Celestines are looking for people to join their church, or army, or … whatever.”

He trails off into thoughtful silence for a beat, squinting down at one of the recipes labeled A Toxic Bait for Garden Pests. “This should kill them … Kill us too, probably, if we made enough of it.” He reads over the ingredient list, and dog-ears the page as a bookmark.

“… You said the Knights are bringing Pophar gifts? What do you mean?”

Jez kind of felt like Cyrel might of come up with a fully formed plan by now, being the expert of criminality that Jez assumed he was. Maybe things weren't as simple as just breaking in, taking what you want, then leaving - all without being seen. Jez still had to work on all of those things, plus the poisoning part was very new to him.

In response to Cyrel's question, he replies, "Err, well, I overheard some servants complaining that they were bad party guests and that they keep bringing him new pets or something. Oh yeah, and that they will have a small private gathering later tonight, a seance to speak with some dead business associate called Baron Hohancho who was murdered last week. But I'm not sure if any of that helps really."

Jez stops for a second, his brow heavily furrowed. "Hold on - what did those women say before? I remember the gardener in Pophar's Estate saying something about freeing 'Ellen from the Celestines' - maybe that's the same faction that he was talking about! If we can get the gardener on-side by promising to help with Ellen, maybe he can help us with entering the estate unseen!"

Jez positively beams - he was contributing! He did, however, keep to himself the part about the 3D city he had seen at the estate, as well as the fact that his murderous colleagues in the Wandering Sun Troupe were responsible for the Baron's death. No point in showing all his cards at once, was there?

“A seance …"  Cyrel chews on the end of his cigarette. “That’s why the Speaker is here … She is not peddling snake oil, mind you. That corpse must have something important to say.”

Closing the book and slipping it into his rucksack,Cyrel takes a moment to consider Jez’s plan. It wasn’t half bad … but then, plans rarely went to schedule. “Not bad, if the gardener is open to negotiation.”

“Once we’re inside, if I can lay my hands on a Celestine, or a Knight, or a bleeding ant for that matter, I can track them wherever they are going. Assuming they’re not advertising their secret seance meeting location, that is.”

"The 'Speaker'?" Jez asks, brow furrowed. How many factions did this bloody city have? "Who is that? Anyone important?" He shrugs his shoulders. "Anyway, it might be worth picking up some numenera that can help us sneak into the place. Plus we need to make that ant poison. Let's get started, or we might not get there in time to save your friends..."

OOC: Once Cyrel is ready, they could spend a short while finding someone that sells / trades numenera of the stealthy variety at a market, then purchase the ingredients for the toxin, then head on over. Unless Cyrel wants to do anything else? Jez will follow his new mentor along if so.

Cyrel and Jez find the ingredients they need for the ant poison at the apothecary that Aaron had mentioned, for a modest price of only three shins. Then, going through the busy market square, they overhear enough local gossip to find their way to the other side of the square, where the last corner shop has a sign that says "Curiosities and Relics from Faraway Places."
