Curiosities and Relics from Faraway Places
The last shop at the southwest corner of the market square is a rundown-looking wooden shack with a big sign across the top that says "Curiosities and Relics from Faraway Places." This shop is only open at random days and times, depending on when the shopkeeper, Vesten, is busy brokering deals with his suppliers, and sometimes on whether he feels like working that day. This shop is the best known place in Trincal to buy and sell cyphers, artifacts, and oddities.

Just inside is a stout wooden u-shaped counter around the front door, blocking access to the rest of the room. Behind the counter, the rest of the room is filled with display cases of many types of numenera of all shapes, sizes, and colors, all of them arranged to be visible from the front door. Vesten, a man with olive skin and hair and eyes so black that they glow, tends to come to the counter quickly from wherever he is in the room with a welcoming smile.

Cyrel and Jez soon find themselves at the front door of the shop. The sign in the window next to it proclaims that the shop is open, and the inside is brightly lit.

Jez opens the door and enters the small area before the counter. He smiles and nods a greeting in response to the chap behind the counter. Looking around at the numenera for inspiration, he waits until Cyrel enters before engaging in any in-depth conversation.

As the door opens, the man behind the counter finishes arranging a small stack of glowing blue crystals on a high shelf in the corner, gives them a quick dusting with a bundle of floofy feathers, and comes to the counter with a smile. "Welcome, come on in. How can I help you?"

Entering the cluttered shop, Cyrel pauses near the door to take stock of everything. His eyes gloss over the various numenera, not really recognizing anything. Then, he focuses on the shop keeper and the task at hand.

“We are looking for some kind of … Hiding device,” he fumbles over the description, unfamiliar with what these objects might be capable of. “I don’t know. A magic cloak, funny boots that don’t leave footprints … Do you have something like that?”

As a rule, he did not like numenera. Relying on a magical device felt like cheating, when you could learn to accomplish most things with time and the application of skill. Besides, his purse already felt uncomfortably light … He hoped Jez did not expect him to pay for their entire adventure.

Jez nods helpfully at Cyrel's request, hoping that his bald new mentor had enough shins to cover the purchase.

"Well..." the man frowns thoughtfully at the two of them for a moment, then walks over to a small table midway across the shop, which has a pile of leathery armbands in varying shades of purple. "Perhaps an invisibility bracelet or two? The pale lavender ones last about ten minutes and are two shins apiece, and these indigo bands will last an hour for six shins. Single use only, but if you bring them back here after you're done, I'll buy them back white for one shin each. Of course, they won't mask your footprints. For that..."

He takes a step to the left and gestures toward a pair of shiny yellow boots. "These will make you look like you're walking on the ground, but really you're hovering half an inch over it. They're also waterproof, snowproof, sandproof, and resist being sucked off your feet when walking in deep mud. 150 shins, and I only have one pair at the moment."

Cyrel sniffs, somewhat dismissively at the magical objects. They weren’t overpriced … Well, except perhaps for the boots. But he rankled at shelling out any more money after a day of already exorbitant expenses.

“Would you consider a trade?” He offers, after a short pause. Opening a leather pouch on his belt, Cyrel pulls out a smooth, semi-circular device with embedded lights that flicker softly as he runs his thumb over the metal enclosure.

“I pried it off some kind of  dead machine in the mountains … The carcass had been picked over fairly well, but there were a few cyphers remaining. It's a stun weapon, works on one limb over a fair distance. Fully charged, of course.”

He holds the device out for the proprietor to inspect.  "I'll trade it for the lavender bracelets."

He had half a mind to just rob the place … But a man with so many magic devices was generally a dangerous man. Cyrel did not feel like making another enemy. Not yet, anyway.

The proprietor's eyes light up at the sight of Cyrel's offering.

"Ahh... a fellow trader of curiosities and relics, are you? Yes, let me have a look... hmm. A device that emits a numbing ray. Yes, that would be well worth two lavender bracelets."

He glances up at Cyrel and Jez. "Two, yes? One for each of you, I presume. Tell you what, I'll throw in a third lavender bracelet as a spare."

Jez's eyes light up on being told about the boots. He must have them. Boots that could hide his tracks would be invaluable in entering and leaving somewhere unseen, and anyway, his current cypher selection was more about fighting than sneaking.

He plonks his cyphers on the counter. "Would you trade these for the boots? They would make our, uh, task ahead much easier." He looks sideways at Cyrel, his youthful exuberance shining through. "You know, it might give us an edge on what we need to do, as well as against that creature you mentioned earlier..."

The man behind the counter looks at Jez's cyphers and laughs. To Cyrel he says, "Your friend has quite a sense of humor, doesn't he?"

He turns back to Jez, still chuckling as he picks up the cyphers and examines them more closely. "I'll give you three of the medium purple bracelets for these. Half an hour of invisibility on each."

“It seems my associate has his heart set on the boots …” Cyrel muses, drumming his fingers thoughtfully on the countertop.

“Our trinkets aren’t enough to cover their cost - That is clear. However, there must be something you want. Either another treasure, or perhaps a favor or job we could perform for you … We aren’t rich men, but I assure you, we are resourceful.”

“For my part. Yes, three lavender bracelets for the numbing ray seems fair enough.”

The man's eyes light up at Cyrel's offer.

"I like your way of thinking," he says, looking them both over more seriously. "It so happens that I do have tasks you could do for me that would be worth these boots. Are you willing to travel a bit? Perhaps to, say, Jargolamis?"

He slides three lavender bracelets across the counter toward Cyrel, while picking up the numbing ray and putting it somewhere under the counter. He then looks pointedly at Jez's cyphers, and then up at Jez expectantly.

Jez can't believe that his bald mentor has gone all out in supporting him - not even his late leader in the Wandering Sun Troupe would have done that. He looks at Cyrel with a slight smile and new-found respect, then focuses on the proprietor.

"Sure, travelling sounds fine - but we do have a task to undertake tonight that needs to be completed first. Assuming you don't mind waiting until tomorrow for us to begin, what exactly would you have us do?"

The man shrugs. "The boots aren't going anywhere. Unless someone else buys them first, of course. What I need is, first, someone to pick up some merchandise from a supplier in Jargolamis, and second, to find out where the supplier is getting his supplies from."

He walks over to the shelf in the corner and picks up one of the glowing blue crystals he had been stacking earlier. "See these things? These used to be rare and therefore profitable. But lately, someone has found a whole motherlode of them somewhere and is killing the market. I want my profits back, so, I need someone to find out where they're coming from and then I can cut out all the middlemen."

He walks back over to the counter, still holding the crystal and gesturing with it. "Come on back when you're ready to go and I'll get a cart ready and give you his name and directions and such. Can I help you fellows with anything else this evening?"

Jez looks slightly disappointed that he won't be wear the boots any time today. However, they had bigger fish to fry - the blue guy, the gorilla and the weird lady were still assumedly stuck in Pophar's estate, and Jez had given his word to help rescue them.

"Thank you sir, we shall be back to aid you shortly. Hold on to those boots!" Turning, he opens the door and waits for Cyrel to exit.

Cyrel’s brain is turning while Jez casually agrees to the deal. Usually he wouldn’t be so quick to bite …. but there was potential here for serious profit.

“Fine. We’ll be back when our other business is concluded. I’ll have questions of course … But yes, that is something we can take care of.” Cyrel pockets the bracelets and takes one last look around the shop before following Jez out the door.

As he exits the shop, he mutters mostly to himself. “Let’s see what kind of trouble Cobin has gotten himself into … Nothing good, I expect.”
