How in the seven hells should I know why the spider wants to kill me? Cyrel snorts, sucking on the half-spent cigarette. Its a beast, a creature I dont pretend to know what its thinking. But this is self preservation, and I intend to come out on top.

He starts backwards, away from the shadows as a thin leg emerges. His hand grabs for the hammer - resting there tensely, even after the small, furry creature reveals itself, instead of a long, spindly one.

Cyrel watches it scurry down the alley. If you want to chase it, Cobin. Be my guest He sighs. I am going to bed. Its late. Its been a long day.

"Dunno, maybe it might have at least told you, or something...? I don't--" Ajeni watches in silence as the creature makes its entrance and exit. After a pause she looks back and forth between Cobin and Cyrel. "So I'm not the only one that saw that, then? Maybe my detective instincts are acting up, but that was all kinds of suspicious, so you know I've gotta check it out..."

Ajeni casts a glance in the direction from which the creature had come, then sidles up to the alley and leans out to see where it's gone.

Cobin waves to Cyrel and follows Ajeni. "Given our luck, it is probably related to whatever is going on here. If not, it is at least a diversion from other worries. Today has been far too tense for me to consider sleep as yet."

"Hello?" he calls out to the creature.

As Cyrel walks off down the street in the direction of the tavern, Ajeni watches the creature scamper down the length of the alley. It stops about three quarters of the way through and turns to lean against the wall, panting a bit. As it turns, Ajeni can faintly see under its thick fur that it's wearing a gold-speckled belt.

At Cobin's greeting, the creature squeaks and stares back up the alley. It hastily tugs out one of the sticks it's holding and brandishes it at them. Then it uses the stick to trace a complex pattern in the air in front of it, and a small, scintillating black hole appears.

Ajeni's eyes flash when she spots the belt. "Cobin...Cobin, it's got one of those belt-harnesses, like Ogsey did! They must be--" She interrupts her whisper to glare up at Cobin when he makes his greeting, and raises both fists. Inhaling as if to shout something less than patient, she glances back at the creature just as it activates its stick.

"Whaa--take cover!" She pulls back from the entrance of the alley, but keeps an eye on the creature through the corner.

"Oh. Bother," Cobin says, and attempts to get out of the way as well. "This is getting quite tiresome: who doesn't understand the purpose of a greeting?"

As Ajeni watches through the wall, the creature relaxes back against the wall as Cobin also pulls away from the alley entrance. It lets go of the stick it had brandished, which clatters to the ground. Looking both ways up and down the alley, it hefts the rest of the sticks into a tighter bundle and steps forward into the black hole. The hole closes behind it a moment later.

When it becomes clear that the black hole isn't going to explode, Ajeni darts around the corner into the alley and runs towards the creature, even as the portal is closing. Arriving a few steps too late, she slows to a stop and bends to pick up the stick. She looks it over, grumbling, and then her scowl slides up off the end to Cobin. Eyebrows twitching, she stares at him silently for a while.

Cobin turns an even more impressive shade of blue.

"Not everything must be a threat," he says defensively, but given how the creature fled and what he did, he sounds like he's trying to convince himself as much as Ajeni. He lets out a sigh after, studying the wall. "AH. I believe you were saying something important?"

The stick is long, thin, and pointy at one end, and looks very similar to the extra-long version of a comet spider's leg. The non-pointy end is open and hollow, and the inside surface is covered with intricate etchings.

"Yeah. Well. When you're trying to surreptitiously track a potential stick-thief, the threat is the big...! Blue...! Cover-blower...!" Ajeni punctuates each phrase with a swishing sword-slash with the stick in Cobin's direction, then heaves a sigh and hangs her head. After a moment she lifts the stick again and scratches under one of her horns with the pointy end.

"Graaah..." With another sigh, she lowers the stick, but still doesn't look up.

"It was wearing one of those harness-belt thing, like what the spider-thing we met in the tower was wearing, which suggests that whoever was manipulating the spider-things has a slightly larger menagerie at his disposal... Which is probably a good way to do things, since the ones we've met have seemed a little...bumbling. Ogsey was apparently just hanging out under a cart waiting to get stepped on by you and Reggie, and this one kinda stumbled into us and didn't even try to act casual. And then there's the question of where it got all the sticks...probably need to check with the local shops..."

Cobin frowns, thinking it over. "The other issue is who made the harnesses, and if they can be used for anything else. For example, why would you harness creatures like that if other ones were at your disposal?"

"Uh huh..." Ajeni trudges out of the alley, dragging the tip of the stick on the ground. "I'll just add it to the pile of stuff to hand over to Browner. Tomorrow."

She turns her head to look in the general direction of Cobin's feet. "You still up for checking out Vesten's in the morning, or are you bent on running off to Jargolamis first thing too? What's in Jargolamis, anyway?"

"I don't even know where Jargolamis is," Cobin says cheerfully. "But I doubt Cyrel will object to trying to tie up loose ends. He is correct that this is no longer the safest place for us to be in." He lets out a sigh at that. "The Knights and the Lord will likely seek to - respond - if we remain, but even so I wish things could have turned out better."

"It's a ways to the west...maybe twice as far as Guran is to the east. I'm not sure a long open road is really the most prudent place to be when a deadly skulking spider-thing is after you, but...eh." Ajeni shrugs and whips the stick up onto her shoulder.

"Anyway, you know where to find me. I'll--Hang on, you don't know where to find me, do you?" She points the stick across the square in the direction of the bakery. "I operate out of that bakery--Rufen's Breads. I'll probably be handling the breakfast crowd, selling pastries from the stand in the front." She glances up at Cobin, nods once, and starts off across the square, pausing for a moment to listen for anyone calling, "Help! Help! Someone's stolen all my sticks!"

Cobin nods to that and heads back to check on Cyrel. Cyrel may talk a mean game, but he knows much of it is defensive, and rooted in fear. The spider-things are part of that, perhaps, but that Cobin has any desire to pry. If Cyrel wishes to tell him, he will. That is what friends are for, after all.

He slips inside, looking for Cyrel and hoping tomorrow might be slightly less adventurous than the madness that was today. At least Ajeni is safe, and Reg must be at the Mud Sticks and safe as well.

As Cobin and Ajeni go their separate ways, another burst of loud music comes from one of the shops, and another drunken couple stagger out and head in the direction of the peasant houses. Otherwise the market square is quiet, with no one shouting anything about thievery. Ajeni does spot Vesten standing still outside of his shop next to an aneen-drawn cart. He's scratching his head and keeps looking from the cart to the street to the alleys and back to the cart again.

Halfway across the square, Ajeni looks back to check that Cobin has left and diverts towards the Opal Aneen. Spotting Vesten, she slows to a stop and watches for a moment, then waves the stick over her head and cups the other hand around her mouth to call from a distance.

"Heyyy! Vee! You're not--...you're not missing a bunch of sticks, by any chance, are you...?"

Vesten glances up in Ajeni's direction. "How do you know about--" he stops, catching sight of the stick she's waving around, and his eyes narrow. "Wait, is that-- where did you get that?" He starts coming toward her.

Ajeni stays where she is, dropping one hand to her hip a little standoffishly and lifting the stick to look it over again. "Yeah, I saw a shifty-looking fuzzball thing carrying a armload of these things over thataway..." She gestures with the stick back towards the alley where the creature had disappeared. "I followed it into an alley and it used this one to generate some kind of portal and got away. If the sticks were yours, you're probably out of luck; they could be anywhere by now...unless the portals have a set out-point..."

Vesten stops when he's right in front of Ajeni. He frowns down at her, and half-heartedly tries to grab the stick.

"Show me. Which alley? What did the fuzzball look like? Was it purple? Did it have big purple eyes, antennae, and bunny feet?" His voice gets steadily more irate as he correctly describes the creature that Ajeni saw. "Because if that's what it was, by the gods I'm going to find where they're coming from and exterminate them all!"

He coughs and glances at Ajeni. "Pardon my outburst. Those sticks were expensive."

"Yeah, that sounds like the one...I do have to admit that I didn't really catch any details beyond 'fuzzy' and 'purple,' but I'd say that narrows down the lineup well enough..."

When Vesten makes to grab the stick, Ajeni moves it away from his grasp to point back at the alley again. "It was that alley, over there." Arm still extended, she looks back over her shoulder at him. "So you've encountered these things before, then? Do you have any idea what they are, or what they would want with a bunch of wotsit-stick cyphers?"

Vesten glowers at Ajeni as she moves the stick out of his reach, but then shrugs and begins walking toward the alley. "They're called venonats. They've been plaguing my shipments for months, stealing things off them. i have no idea what they want, but it's always transdimensional items that they go after." He snorts. "Maybe they're looking for their home universe, and if that's so, they better find it soon and go away before I find them..."

He trails off into unintelligible muttering as he heads for the alley.

After a moment of watching Vesten head off toward the alley, Ajeni opens her mouth an inhales as if to call after him, but reconsiders, instead giving a little a shrug and waving a hand dismissively at his back before shouldering the stick once more and continues on her way toward the Opal Aneen.
