Trincal Market Square
At the center of Trincal where the two main roads cross, there is an expansive market square. All kinds of permanent shops line the east and west sides of the square. During the day, the middle of the square is filled with market stalls and temporary kiosks for hot food vendors, local farmers, and traveling traders. At the exact center of the square is a fancy clock tower made of pale green synth pipes, surrounded by a low, decorative black and white fence.

The market square is relatively quiet at this time of late evening. Most of the shops are closed, except for a couple with loud, obnoxious music coming out of them. The market square clock shows that it's almost 26 o'clock.

Cobin relaxes as they walk about, not having realized how tense he'd been getting under the Estate. He lets out a few breaths, favours passers-by with friendly grins and turns his gaze down to the other two. "I imagine the Knights lost some standing in being unable to capture myself or Reg, but I doubt they'll stop. I admit to being curious about the Lord, and whatever the true nature of the ants and zoo are, but not enough to go back there. And I do not know what can be done about the ant burrow or zoo legally, if one is a Lord?"

He waits, trusting those with more experience will know if the only solution is to walk away. Everyone is tired and hungry, which he doubts helps matters, but he doesn't trust his reactions in this.

"Yeah, I do kinda have to admit that the only reason I came out of hiding when the knights showed up was because I couldn't resist making them look goofy. I had been hoping for a bit more of a prolonged, steely-eyed standoff, but...eh." Ajeni gives a helpless, palms-up shrug as she walks.

"Anyway, I dunno how much pull Pops has around here, but if you want to press the issue with the town guard, I'll back you up. Reggie too, when he gets back."

"Oh, hey..." She pauses and digs the three dart-cyphers out of her bag, along with the pressure detonator. "So, salvaging these darts from those lances has kinda left me overloaded on cyphers...anyone want one? And come to think of it, for that matter..." She paws around some more and produces a tiny white pill in a clear vial. "Do either of you have a match for this telepathy-pill thing? I don't even remember where I got it. Maybe I'll just chuck it. Reggie can vouch that mind-talky with me is something probably best avoided..."

"The guards took what I had, so I will not object," Cobin says, taking a dart and the detonator unless Cyrel wishes the have the latter for Reasons.

"Pressing the issue with the guard would be ...." He spreads his head. "I don't know enough of this city to know what the Lord's goal is in this zoo, or if the authorities can truly stop him or just delay him. Having dealt with bandits in the past, it tended to be difficult for our village to cause more than minor benefits that sometimes less to worse results over time."

“Don’t toss anything without a proper appraisal … “ Cyrel chides, picking up the mental node for a moment to inspect it. “There is a curio shop, not far from here. Its owner could offer a fair trade, if you have no use for this device.”

He hands the cypher back to Ajeni and turns to Cobin with a light frown. “If the Knights are hunting you now, that’s more than enough reason to be on our way … Even without the arachnids nipping at our heels. My vote, should it count for anything, is to leave for Jargolamis in the morning.”

Cyrel shudders slightly, looking out on the mostly-empty market square. He usually felt at home in the night, but his eyes dart at the shadows, looking for evidence of long-thin legs and the trail of a comet, glittering in the darkness.

"You know your vote does," Cobin says with a smile. He glances about, noting Cyrel's wariness, but just says: "And yes: I think we've stirred up too much here to be safe at all, no matter that most wasn't our doing." He sighs after, a bit dejected at how his first visit to a proper city has turned out.

"I don't think there's all that much mystery to the zoo...guy just has a thing for weird creatures and wants to expand his collection. The question is...what do the Angulan Knights get out of the arrangement, and why is it worth it to them to ingratiate themselves with a fairly minor noble in a remote border town like Trincal? I wouldn't doubt that they were the ones who gave Pophar the idea to start collecting mutants in the first place..."

Ajeni rubs at her eyes with the heels of her hands. "Anyway, I still need to pay Vesten a visit about those blue crystals, because they're somehow connected to the spider-things, and whatever it was they stole from Sarovek's workshop." Without removing her hands, she looks over at Cyrel. "Browner's probably going to want a debrief on whatever you managed to get from the venom sample, so don't go skipping down too quickly..."

“If you think I give a cavot’s arse what Browner expects, you’ve seriously misjudged my character …” Cyrel sneers, pacing back and forth in the nearly empty market square. He pauses, his eyes resting nervously on a particularly dark patch of shadow.

“But, the venom … Yes, that’s a good point. That could be useful.”

He squints at Ajeni. “What do you mean, the blue crystals are connected to the spiders … In what way?”

Cobin blinks, having thought of it in his head as definitely a city and not some minor remote border town at all. "Also, Reg has been here for some time and yet they left him alone. Which seems - a very odd omission for the Knights, and the Lord, to make. Were the knights hoping that leaving him out might draw other mutants, or even lead to the event we caused? Set the Lord up for a revolt or fall, see who comes after them ...."

He spreads his big hands in a shrug. "Though I have no idea how that would make sense at all. Or, given how dangerous those blue crystals are, why the knights - and/or the ruling parties of the city - did not confiscate them for their own use. Were I nefarious like a bandit and paid attention to the town everyone who was trapped in one ended up at, it would be an ideal way to dispose of enemies if the end-point was filled with guards."

"Nah, just sussing motivations..." Ajeni slides one hand lower and parts her fingers to peer through and arch an eyebrow at Cyrel. "Because if you're not interested in a consulting fee, and let's face it, 'for the public good' was never going to convince anyone...just what is your angle here, anyway? You were pretty quick to volunteer your services and talk a venom sample out of Browner...

"We know the crystals are connected to spider-things somehow because the one we met in the zoo wasn't wearing a harness, but he knew about them. When I suggested he use getting hit by a crystal-blast as a means of escaping, he said he didn't want to become a 'harness-soldier, like the others.' Which suggests that the group that broke into Sarovek's tower were under someone else's influence, and they stole something that I suspect is connected to the crystals directly, for...for reasons I'm not entirely able to articulate. It's kind of a hunch, like I tend to have sometimes..."

The music gets suddenly louder for a few seconds as a man and a woman stumble out from one of the shops across the street. Holding each other up and giggling, the two stagger past half a dozen closed shops before turning into one of the alleyways.

“That’s none of your —“ Cyrel growls, cutting himself short with an exasperated sigh. He glowers darkly at Ajeni for a few moments, turning something over in his head.

“Fine …” He sighs again, sounding tired this time. His hand reaches for the cigarette case in his pocket. “My interest in the spiders is of a … personal nature.” Cyrel chews on the words with a sour look, and sticks a cigarette in his mouth.

“Cobin and I encountered a nearly identical creature in the Black Riage, near Stirthal … It is intent on killing me.”

Lighting the cigarette and exhaling a line of smoke, Cyrel watches the couple exit the tavern and traipse down the alley. They were just asking to be robbed.

“So yes,” he looks back at Ajeni, trails of pale blue smoke wafting from the ports on the sides of his head. “I conned Browner … My intention is to stay alive. If it helps the investigation, fine. There's coin in that, which suits me as well. But no, I’m not here to be a good samaritan.”

Cobin smiles slightly, privately to himself. Cyrel may try and sound like he doesn't care, but he knows his friend better than that. Cyrel might be watching the shadows, but he has yet to insist they flee the city because there is far more at stake here than just us. Not that he will say such a thing aloud, since Cyrel would just be embarrassed.

Ajeni folds her arms and looks off to one side, pondering for a moment. "Yeah, that's the kind of information it may have been beneficial to have known a lit-tle sooner. Because as it happens, the spider-thing in the zoo was looking for someone in particular. Someone he lost track of just outside of Stirthal. Maybe with a little in-clueing we might not have been so quick to break him out of his cell and point him to the nearest exit. But hey...hindsight, right? I'm sure that keep-all-your-cards-close-to-your-chest thing has worked out for you lots of times."

“You - You did WHAT?” Cyrel sputters, choking on a lungful of smoke.

He turns on Ajeni, the lit cigarette held between two fingers like a branding iron - smoldering menacingly in the air. “What about the temperament of the spiders led you to believe that letting one out was a good idea? We all met the same stinking, farting cesspool of a creature in the tower. Or am I wrong?”

He glowers at Ajeni, and then turns on Cobin with a sneer. “And whose brilliant idea was this? You, Cobin? Or perhaps your bleeding-heart gorilla friend”

Cyrel sucks angrily on the cigarette, blowing a line of smoke out through his nose. “Can we agree now, in light of current information, that these creatures are not our friends? No more waxing poetic about their feelings. We strike first, before I wind up dead, and you Cobin, find yourself without employment.”

"I saw it briefly when it was released and tried to ascertain its name," Cobin says, unmoved by the sneer. A small part of him is unimpressed at friendship being taken as employment, but he sets it aside since he knows his friend is worried. "I do not know what they learned, for I learned nothing myself. It did lack the harness, I think, unless it was the guards here who removed that.

"And while they are not friends, it doesn't mean they all must be enemies. Someone is using them for other ends - learning why would be .. useful for you, I imagine?" he says, still mildly, but there is the hint of an edge under that.

Ajeni gives another open-handed shrug. "Yeah. Well. Any other potentially-life-endangering secret information on this case we should maybe know about? Just what did you do to earn a death-grudge from a spider-thing, anyway? I mean, like, if he invited you to a web-warming party and you figured a bottle-opener oddity would be a good gift, but everyone else had the exact same idea so he just looks over the massive pile of bottle openers and says to himself, 'If I get ONE MORE bottle opener, I just...I just don't know what I'm gonna do...' and then you show up, and he just snaps, that's one thing, but if you, like...murdered his entire family and made him watch, leaving him alive so he could tell the story so that all the Riage would come to know and fear the name of Cyrel Spiders-Bane, that's...that's another matter entirely."

"Also, I guess we could stop calling them spider things...; the plaque in the zoo said they were 'Nibovian Children'--or maybe that's just a false cognate and the actual plural is 'Childs'--which rings a kind of bell, but I--" She pauses to reach up and tap one of her bells, producing a little ping, "--but I can't quite place it. Prolly need to do a little research, because it feels like there's more there..."

The deepest, darkest shadows that Cyrel was eyeing before makes a faint scratching noise. Then a pair of long, spindly appendages emerges. A moment later, a small round creature with purple fur bolts out into the street, clutching a bundle of shiny black sticks. It squeaks and skids to a halt upon seeing our heroes, veers left, and disappears into the shadows of the next alley.

"Perhaps Nibovia is their home?" Cobin begins, then starts. Stares. "... sticks? I would have expected stones," half to himself, and looks at Cyrel. "Follow, or do we leave?" as he has far more experience with this Child-thing than any of them.
