Main Engineering: Sebastian
Main Engineering is a roughly cylindrical room, taller than it is wide with several tiers of equipment lining the circumference of the room on all sides. A spiral staircase runs from the top level to the bottom, stopping at each landing. The steady hum of machinery drowns out all attempts at conversation, and the floor vibrates more than it used to, threatening to eventually tear the staircase free from the wall. For now, however, it is relatively stable.

In the center of the cylinder, suspended on a lattice with thick tubes and bundled wires running into it from all sides, is a large, white ceramic sphere.

Sebastian had been working in the engine room alone for most of the day. In fact, he had been alone for the past 37 days - the full duration of his shift. Tonight was his last night awake, before returning to the EPIPHANY Stasis system. Anything he did not finish by curfew would be assigned to the next engineer on duty to complete.

At the moment, he was lying on his back beneath the sphere, investigating a hairline fracture that had been causing a variety of different issues on the ship. Right now for instance, it was making it very difficult for Sebastian to keep ahold of his tools, since they kept floating away whenever he got too close to the damage.

The sphere contained a miniature black hole that powered the ship’s engines. If the crack grew much bigger, it could cause serious problems for the ship and its crew.  The technology was well understood, but required maintenance and had never been studied over such a prolonged mission, with the unique stressors of the Janus Seed Ship Initiative.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
Sebastian held his breath as he sprayed the foul smelling alloy epoxy onto the hairline fracture. He was following protocol and wearing a breathing mask and goggles, despite his usual habits. Tiny droplets of powdered metal and adhesive ricocheted off the sphere and rippled eerily in every direction, gravity failing most in such proximity to the fracture. Some drops splattered against his goggles, obscuring his vision slightly. "And that's how I ruined another pair of goggles and a breather mask." He shook his head as he examined how much of the spray actually made it onto the crack. "Well, glad I'm not inhaling this stuff. Last thing I need is a trip to see medical."

He frowned and sighed as his laser spanner tumbled end over end, suspended weightless just out of his reach. "I can't heat cure the epoxy if you keep running off like that."

He strained to grab at it, not really wanting to get out of this position, and ended up knocking the spanner away. Gravity reasserted itself and the tool clanged to the ground, bounced in the worst possible direction, and clattered down the spiral staircase. "Great, just great."

Sebastian got up and searched for his laser spanner, grumpy and agitated.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
The spanner tool tumbles down the stairs, making a distinct clanging sound as it hits each rung. Eventually the device smacks against the floor, three levels below, and rolls predictably out of sight.

As Sebastian pursues the errant tool, the staircase shakes and rattles beneath his footfalls. The railing was dangerously loose in spots, and every so often one of the steps slanted at a strange angle, or gave way just as his foot hit the edge, making it a challenge to navigate without tripping and following the spanner inelegantly down the stairs.

Despite the perils, he arrives on the bottom tier of Engineering without incident, and after a quick glance around, he notices that the door to his workshop is wide open. Based on the bounce trajectory, the tool most likely rolled inside, underneath a desk, or behind a project somewhere.

As he begins to move towards the workshop however, Sebastian hears the sound of rustling coming from inside, followed by the quick patter of bare feet running across the warm metal floor.

"Uh, hello?"

Sebastian peered around the corner cautiously, unsure who was scheduled to be awake, and further, who on the ship would bother him in his workshop.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
Sebastian’s question is greeted by a pronounced silence that hangs on the air for several long seconds. He can hear the sound of someone’s ragged breathing, coming softly from the dark room beyond.

The person in the workshop seems to be considering him for a time. But then, abruptly he hears the slap of bare feet running across the floor again, and the sharp sound of metal scraping against metal as someone struggles to remove one of the heavy metal access panels along the wall of the workshop.

As the panel is removed, there is a sudden pale ray of light. Sebastian can see a long, dark shadow cast along the wall, as a short figure slips its way behind the wall panel and disappears from sight.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
Sebastian immediately used his implant to call up a life sign scan on the ship, looking for anyone else out of stasis. While he was doing this, he moved to pick up the heaviest tool within reach.

"What the hell was I supposed to do if something like this happened?"

He nervously spoke to himself, a habit he had only recently started since being the only one awake.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
The Clairvoyance overlay blinks to life, showing Sebastian a ship schematic with various life signs highlighted. There is one small blip on the ship diagram, showing that one person is awake and active in the ship cafeteria. Strangely, Clairvoyance does not indicate any life forms within Sebastian’s workshop.

As he stands in the threshold of his workshop, clutching his makeshift weapon, Sebastian hears soft banging sounds coming from the walls as someone crawls through the narrow passages. The sound is gradually growing more distant, indicating that the person is probably moving away from engineering.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
Sebastian grew pale, and began nervously talking out loud.

"Ok, ok. Cafeteria. I'll go there. I'll see if whoever else is awake. I'll see if they have met our friend or if I just really need some sleep. Then I'll see if I can stop babbling to myself and whatever hallucination I must have just had."

He tried not to panic and he made his way to the corridor leading to the cafeteria, his fingers numb from holding his tool so tightly.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
The hallway is long and quiet, stretching from engineering down the length of the ship, where it will eventually intersect with the hydroponics bay and cafeteria. Sebastian can feel the pulse of the engines through the floor, and the walls vibrate and rattle as  Janus hurtles through space towards some unknowable destination.

As he rounds the corner approaching the cafeteria, the thrum of the engine is replaced by the sound of loud, blaring rock music that spills down the hallway and bounces off the empty corridors. The voice of a woman occasionally sings along with the mostly unintelligible lyrics, likely oblivious to anyone else being able to hear her.

The cafeteria is dreary and dull, with pealing green walls and several ugly conduits running through the ceiling. It feels, perhaps intentionally, like the mess hall on a submarine: claustrophobic and cramped, with low ceilings and not enough space to get completely comfortable. Someone has painted a mural on one of the walls - a maze drawn in black paint, that seems to have no solution.

Food is stored in an automat display case that divides the cafeteria from the kitchen. Each item has its own little glass compartment, with a tiny door that you open to make a selection. It is self-serve, and food always seems to be available,  whether or not there is a chef on shift duty.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
Sitting at one of the rectangular tables is a woman with long dark hair gathered into dreadlocks. Sebastian recognizes her as Claire Forester, one of the three psychologists assigned to the Janus. She is wearing dark-blue work pants with a white tank-top shirt that exposes an elaborate tattoo running down one arm. In front of her on the table, crew files are spread from end to end - gathered into loose groupings, but without any real organization. She sips on a cup of coffee, peering down at the various papers through black-rimmed glasses.

She looks up as Sebastian enters the room, somewhat startled. "Oh sorry," Claire flashes an apologetic smile, "I hope I wasn't bothering you. The music helps me think. Actually I was hoping to talk to you before your shift ended.... didn't know if I'd get the chance. You want a cup of coffee?"

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
Somewhat in a daze, Sebastian loosens the grip on his improvised sidearm. He considers what she says and nods, but his expression betrays his unease. "Yeah," he swallows, "coffee." For a moment he wonders if he should bring it up to her, but if not her, then who?

"Is anyone else awake? Someone was running around barefoot in my workshop."

He very obviously cranes his neck to check for her shoes as he mentions the bare feet.

Re: Main Engineering: Sebastian
“No, it’s just us.” Claire frowns, swiping her hand over the table. The various scattered slips of paper sort themselves into neat stacks, with the confidential information obscured. Glancing at her feet, Sebastian can see that she is wearing standard issue black work boots, with non-standard neon-orange laces that emit a faint glow.

She sits with her elbows on the table, looking at Sebastian over her mug of coffee. “Someone in your workshop... hmm. Is  anything missing? I’ve been reviewing crew reports from last shift, and several people reported stolen gear.”

“There’s no official record that anything has been stolen. No video footage, no automated logs -  just word of mouth."

"For that matter…” she gestures towards the strange painting of the circular maze on the far wall,  “This definitely wasn’t here last time I was awake… but I can’t find the video log to prove that anyone painted it. It’s like it just … appeared by magic.”
