Brianna doesn't seem to hear the Admiral. She just stays there, staring at the disaster she narrowly avoided. Williams stumbles away from the window and into one of the chairs, looking disturbed.

"That's...Jesus Christ. That's something else."

Seeing the Admiral break out the whiskey, Williams stares at one of the glasses for a moment, then shrugs and takes it, holding it up for a toast and saying half-sardonically:

"To the call of duty, I guess."

The Admiral looked to Williams, but nodded her head at Brianna as the older woman took her own glass.

"Your friend seems to be in shock, not that I blame her. Would you like me to get someone to take her to the infirmary? The doctors are for the most part investigating the bodies for any clues as t what exactly happened down there, but I'm sure one could give her a quick check and maybe something to help relax her."

Williams turns back around to see that Brianna, while she hasn't moved, has balled her hands up into trembling fists by her sides. With veiled caution, Williams responded:

"...no, she's...tougher than she looks. She made it through Gaultown, after all, so I don't think she's that shaken by this."

She takes a swig of whiskey, silently praying that the unhinged, PTSD stricken class-5 wouldn't snap and go nova. That's when Brianna finally speaks to the admiral again, still staring out the window with her voice thick with grief, but still determined:

"Have you found anyone alive?"

The Admiral poured herself another shot.

"In a manner of speaking, yes. Some made it to escape pods, but the launching mechanism was too damaged to function so they were still trapped. Whatever destroyed the base turned the pods mostly to scrap, but there was one that had sealed and was mostly intact. The oxygen tanks were wrecked, ripped into by shrapnel when the final explosion happened. We found three inside, a guard, a prisoner, and someone we cannot account for as of yet. Everyone had been breathing pure carbon dioxide for who knows how long, the first suffered brain death and the last one is simply outright dead. The survivors are under care but no change in their condition is expected, and the last one is in cold storage awaiting an autopsy.

"We've managed to confirm the guard as William Randall, the prisoner is a man named Kinetic whose gift is to increase the force of a moving object, and the last is a young woman about twenty or so we still have no confirmation on. All we know about her so far is she was wearing a great deal of metal, and had several flasks on her person all of which so far seem to be normal alcohol available in any public store with metal shavings mixed in."

"He is awake and aware of his surroundings, but any time we try to talk to him about what happened in the prison he suffers episodes of what might be PTSD according to the available doctors. He becomes panicked, screams and yells things like 'No!' and 'Keep away from me!'. He has even turned violent in these instances, threw a food tray at a seaman and broke three ribs. We have to sedate him when he gets like that, yet when he wakes up he has no memory of his actions."

Brianna, looking sickened and determined, put her hand on the window and stared out at the sea. Just beyond the admiral's field of vision, a familiar angelic figure formed out of thin air, spreading his wings and looking at his charge expectantly. With a single mental command, Valorum falls backwards and dives headlong into the water as Brianna turned to look at the Admiral:

"I want to help. It was my mission to psychoanalyze and rehabilitate Kane Isaiah Armani, but now I don't know where he is. I need to find out if he's even down there, because if he is, this entire fleet and all its personnel are in mortal danger. And if he isn't..."

Brianna doesn't finish the thought, falling into a worrying silence before turning to the Admiral in full and asking:

" Finding and recapturing Kane takes priority over my previous assignment until further notice. Do I have your permission to assist with the salvage operation, Admiral Costello?"

In reply to Admiral Maria Costello (msg # 58):

"Thank you, ma'am."

With that, Brianna salutes as well as she can and leaves the room. Williams sees this, downs her whiskey and puts her glass down, muttering:

"Back on the clock, I guess. Nice talking to you, Admiral."

And with a half-decent salute of her own, Williams rushes out after Brianna.

----------

"...what the hell..?"

Having finally caught up to Brianna, Williams finds her kneeling near the edge of the flight deck with her other two guards flanking her. In the setting sun, it's impossible to tell if her powers were active or not, but she seemed to be staring intently at the salvage operations on the rolling waves below.

"...this ship is rocking top-range military hardware, missy. Looking at the water isn't going to do-"

As if on cue, an arch of flame-orange light broke the surface of the water below and landed on the deck. Valorum, his armoured body's dim glow suddenly brightening with his proximity to Brianna, spoke aloud even as steam wafted off his newly energized skin and Brianna's escorts stepped back, surprised and wary.

"You did not give me much energy to work with, but I have searched the area beneath this ship and...there are bodies everywhere, but no sign of life."

Brianna grimaced, looking up at her guardian and saying:

"This whole place reeks of Kane. Only he could have done something this atrocious...but we still have a lot of wreckage to search. Here."

And after a few moments of what looks like prayer, judging by her bowed head, clasped hands, and the halo that forms over her head, Brianna produces a basketball-sized sphere of pure, golden light. Handing it off to Valorum, Brianna orders him:

"If you find anybody even remotely alive, use that to sustain them and get them to the surface immediately. We might be too late to save everyone, but I'm not letting anyone else die if we I can help it."

Valorum shapes the light he was given into a caduceus as tall as himself, examining his work as he asks:

"'We' have a lot of wreckage to search?"

Brianna looks out at the salvage operations, swallowing hard and replying:

"There's something I want to try. Just focus on the lives down there. I'll be fine. "

Valorum glances up at the two soldiers and the agent behind his charge, shooting them a dangerous look before nodding at Brianna, spreading his wings, and diving into the sea again. Williams and the guards, as well as some of the nearby deckhands and other personnel on the ship, continue to stare, utterly flabbergasted as Brianna mentally shifts gears. She had always defined herself based on her healing and light-manipulation abilities, but she did have a third power nobody really picked up on; empathy. Even now, she could feel the confusion and fear in her escorts, the grim determination that hung over the whole ship like a miasma, and just on the edge of her vision, in the sea below, she could smell the residue of terror, horror, and...she didn't even know what else. Her empathy seemed to be constantly running in the back of her head, so she never really focused on it, but maybe if she did...

Nothing else to do except try it, I guess.

And so Brianna pushed all of her focus into her third power. Slowly, she felt more an more hearts and minds open to her sixth sense as an invisible bubble expanded around her, slowly encapsulating most of the ship as it began to dip into the watery depths below.

Brianna's focus on her empathic ability poured energy into it, opening it up to a level not until this day achieves.

Suddenly, panic gripped her; she was freezing cold, with salt water trying to slip pass her lips and fill her lungs that burned from air poisoned from carbon dioxide. There was no light, only complete darkness that at any second might turn everlasting.

A second later she was herself once more, kneeling on the deck. However, she had her answer; someone was still alive down there, yet not for much longer it seemed...

ITSDA Prison  - Remote, Impregnable Fortress (Location 9)

Brianna draws in a shuddering gasp of air as the shock of cold water flooded her senses. The apprehension of her guards was suddenly forgotten as her senses plunged into the depths, into the eyes of somebody who had long since died and...wait...what was that light? She could see a warm, orange light piercing through the cold, wet blackness that surrounded her...why did it look so familiar too?

Brianna tensed as she realized what she was seeing, and sent Valorum an urgent message:

Valorum; there's someone near you and they're barely alive. Hurry!

-----

Valorum, meanwhile, was plunging through the depths with ease, the sharp edges of his hard-light form slicing through the water. He passed other divers who had seen him on his first run through the murky depths, and fortunately, they spared him from the gawking that happened the first time around. It wasn't long past them that the light from the setting sun began to fade and only the angel's own glow illuminated the depths. Slabs of metal, floating debris, and of course, corpses, were tinged orange all around him, but beyond about 15 feet, it was nothing but void.

So Valorum ceased maintaining his cohesive form; his features became fluid and spectral, and he formed multiple motes of light from his spare essence, which he sent out in many directions to illuminate the area around him. What he saw was just surreal; spheres of light drifting the weightless graveyard around him, filled with random objects and materials eerily creaking and clinking as they collided with each-other in the soundless space around him. It was beyond hellish. Hell was suffering and pain for eternity, but it was something; this was worse. It was just...nothing.

~~~Γίνε~ήρωας~βοηθήστε~τον~άνθρωπο~~~
Brianna's voice suddenly spoke in Valorum's mind, and what she said put him on high alert. Somebody could see him, someone on the verge of death, and he had to save them. Inspired, Valorum peered through the water, trying to spot any sign of life. Everything was slowly moving about this barely lit void, so spotting something distinct was a bust, and all he could hear was creaking metal echoing through water and...something else...
Valorum suddenly noticed one mainly intact block of metal; a mostly deconstructed block of the prison that still had some structure to it. Just as he saw this, one of his lights illuminated an anomaly; a column of bubbles rising from the cluster of drifting metal
Hope surged in the angel's heart as he rushed towards this promising sight. He had to maneuver through a flooded hallway and around some loose panels and corpses, but he eventually found the source; near the top, the water broke into a shifting, iridescent mass; trapped air. What's more, he could see a person barely floating in this pocket of air; they were still mostly clothed, but he Valorum had no time to worry about details. Whoever this was, they were likely to be only barely lucid, but that didn't stop Valorum.
The angel rushed towards the survivor, gathing all of his split fragments into his form and commanding every strand of healing light Brianna had gifted him to surround his target. Light flowed from many parts of the drifting graveyard, into this structure, and up to the pocket to surround the survivor like a halo. Startled, this nondescript person thrashed weakly, no doubt afraid of this sudden bright light, but Valorum did not care. He gathered his essence back into his form and enveloped the survivor in a cocoon of holy power. With no regard to what his cargo felt, Valorum dove back into the water, swam out of the structure, and began to rocket towards the surface.
----------
Despair, confusion, hope, fear, and hope again all swirled in Brianna's mind. She had lost the visual connection, but she could still feel the cold, unfeeling harshness of the deep, dark waters, as well as the feelings flowing through this barely lucid mind she had found. Now Brianna felt a rush, like something was holding her. Pain eased as the water's grip loosened and warmth and light carried her higher and higher...and suddenly, a spire of water and light exploded from the sea below, and Brianna snapped out of her trance to look up. She saw a bullet of fiery light rise from the water and spread a pair of glorious fiery wings, while carrying a wet mass of something in its arms.
"Holy shit!"
...suffice it to say that Williams still had to get used to Valorum's shenanigans. But now wasn't the time. Valorum, his body now reformed, glided down from the sky and landed on the deck of the carrier, where his cargo collapsed from his grasp, heaving for breath and retching. Brianna's instincts fired up in a second, and she orders Williams;
"Get some paramedics here NOW! HURRY!"
Williams, stunned, numbly followed orders despite the obvious irony. Brianna placed herself alongside the wet, retching mess of a person Valorum had dragged up. Putting a hand on their back, her light began to spread across their shivering body to ease their pain and warm them.
"Easy now, you're safe. You're among friends."
Brianna could tell as her healing light flooded into the woman's body that they were in bad shape, shock and emotional trauma coupled with dehydration thanks to a lengthy exposure of salt water. The African American seemed unaware of the people now around her, however as she shivered and vomited onto the deck of the ship Teresa's phone chimed to let her know she had received a text. The sender was marked as UNKNOWN and the message consisted of three words;
Brianna is a little too busy to check her phone, glancing across the deck of the ship and seeing Williams returning with some paramedics and a stretcher.
"We need a drip and a blanket here. NOW!"
Valorum, meanwhile, notices Brianna's phone chime and fixes it with a look of confusion. She usually kept it on vibrate, so that it made noise at all was an anomaly. The angel waves a hand, causing the device lift out of Brianna's shirt pocket with an orange glow about it so he could read the message. Valorum crooks his eyebrow at the implications, but otherwise stays silent as the paramedics set up and Brianna checks her new patient's vitals and put a thermal blanket over her shoulders:
"Just breathe and try to relax. We have a lot of questions, but we're going to make sure you're alright before you need to worry about them, okay?"
Brianna appears gradually more worried when she doesn't see or hear any response directly from this girl. Before she can embarrass herself, however, Valorum speaks up:
"She's responsive, don't worry. I believe she's communicating through this."
Brianna looks back at the angel and sees him holding out her phone. Taking a moment to look at the one-sided conversation displayed on the screen, a look of relief settles on her face. She looks back at 'Techno' as the stretcher starts getting carted away, so Brianna has to jog up to it and alongside the paramedics in order to report:
"My gift is helping her, but she's still suffering from shock, hypothermia, and dehydration. Keep the drip running and keep her under that blanket."
The lead paramedic listened and nodded at Brianna, replying:
"Don't you worry, ma'am. We'll take it from here."
Brianna winds down her jog and stops to watch as Techno is taken away to be tended to. Valorum, Williams, and Brianna's two escorts all catch up just in time to see Brianna leaning on the railing at the edge of the deck, watching the retreating figures. Williams is the first to speak up:
"...so...wanna explain what-?"
With no warning, Brianna grunts and slumps onto the railing, clasping her free hand over her mouth with a suddenly pale, sick expression on her face. As she leans over the railing, Valorum holds up a hand to Williams and the guards, saying placidly:
"Just give us a second."
Though apprehensive, Williams waves down the guards, and the three of them keep their distance so Valorum can approach Brianna while she retches over the side of the ship.
Maria prided herself on knowing everything that occurred on her ship, and when she didn't she sought to make it right with a determination akin to steel. However when the being motioned everyone back from Teresa even Costello complied, unsure of how to deal with such a creature.
Valorum turned back to Brianna, who now was taking deep breaths for a few moments before hacking and spitting overboard and wiping her mouth with a hankerchief. After a few more long moments of recomposing herself, gently muttering "you're fine, you're fine", Brianna turned to her escort and the admiral.
In the minutes since she opened her senses to the depths, Brianna's features have become ghostly; her alabaster skin had lost its colour, becoming clammy and semi-transparent, and in the setting sun, not only were the bags under her eyes suddenly visible, but her hair shifted from platinum blonde to silvery white. She had lost sleep since Gaultown and only barely started to recover, but now it looked like she was relapsing. What she had seen in those depths, what she was continuously aware of now, was worse than Gaultown had ever been.
Valorum saw this and was wary, but he heard his charge's thoughts, and didn't stop her approach. And so Brianna reported everything to Admiral Costello, from Valorum's dive and her divination to the recovery of the girl, possibly a DA agent, named Techno. All while leaning on the deck's railing for balance.
"...that's about everything. She's in the infirmary now. My gift has cut most of her symptoms down, so she isn't going to die, but she needs to rest and rehydrate before we can question her."
Reaching that deep into the water with a hitherto unknown power took a lot out of her, and she ended up nearly passing out just trying to walk around. Valorum ended up half-carrying her to an available hammock, setting her down and making himself discreet, becoming little more than a dim ball of light on the wall and watching as she rested.
--------
Several hours later, with Techno in stable condition, Brianna enters the medical bay. She doesn't look like someone who's slept for six hours, but she walks through the chaos to Techno nonetheless, checking the clipboard at the base of her bed and remarking:
"Good. Your vitals are much closer to healthy ranges now."
Then she pulls a nearby chair to her patient's bedside, adding whimsically:
Finally to see my daughter again, to walk in the sun, eat a hamburger; all the things people take for granted, until they no longer have them. The woman placed the tips of her index fingers to her temples, massaging the skin slowly as though the action helped her recall events more clearly.
"There was a breech, and a bunch of people clad in body armor totting nasty looking weapons boarded the prison. The way they were dressed and acted I would have thought they were soldiers, but they didn't wear any markings or insignias. They were decked out like they could invade a small country, the guards stood little chance against them.
"From what I could see on the monitors, they had come for one inmate; along the way though they freed other prisoners, and shut down the Gift-suppressing technology that helped keep things calm and orderly. A roit broke out quickly, I don't know if it was meant just to be a distraction to cover the escape of the man they'd come for, or if the troops really wanted the prison damaged.
"After they got their man, the soldiers left. They'd blown a hole in one of the rooms, had a small sub waiting there. Likely they thought they'd cut the camera feeds, but I can make tech do what I what and they couldn't hide from me.
"That would have probably been the end of it, just get the Gift suppressors back online and quell the riot. But the soldiers shut down containment in the isolation wing, where only the blackest of souls ever go. That's when the Devil himself appeared, white hair instead of horns but it was him all the same. He did...things to guards and inmates alike that even after seeing it I just can't believe. He wasn't angry, he didn''t care who his targets were, he just had this huge grin on his face like killing and torture gave him unbridled joy.
"He didn't hide the fact he was coming for the central command area, we activated all of the countermeasures that still survuved but he blew through them like they never even existed. The Warden started evacuations starting with the least important, then cutting more the closer he got and proved our best not good enough. I was one of the last ordered to leave, when it was down to just essencal personal. Even then, they were dumping files and erasing servers instead of trying to pointless stop the guy from coming.
"I was running for the escape pods, but I wasn't even a thrid of the way there when I heard a gut-wrenching sound, as if the entire prison were trying to twist itself in half. The noise was everywhere, shreiking and screaming metal made to withstand crushing depths crumpling like paper.
"There was only one thing I could thing to do, so I commanded the blast door around my section of hallway to close. There was some kind of massive explosion, like someone had set off a a high yeild explosive, and I was tumbling end over end in my make shift escape pod. Not the best, a water was leaking in; I'd hoped an SOS had been sent and I could last long enough to be rescued. Then as time passed and the freezing water took up more and more room I thought all I'd done was save myself enough time to envision what my death would be like."<purple>
Throughout Techno's whole testimony, Brianna had been silent and stone-faced. Halfway through, she fixed her gaze on her own hands to mask the distant look she knew was crossing her face. She didn't have to say his name. Now that she had tapped into her higher senses, Brianna could feel his presence below and almost around her now that she was deeper in the ship. For a long moment, she didn't even want to breathe for fear that she might choke in the aura.
