Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

Our brave adventurers were born and raised in Greenest where they learned all they could and excelled far beyond any others.  With such great promise the four friends took for a life of adventuring.  They start off in the town of Neverwinter where they received their first real shot at adventuring...

The brave adventurers from Greenest are:

Ela'al Half-Orc Druid Sailor

Galyil Lightfoot Halfling Bard Urchin

Og Rock Gnome Paladin Folk Hero

Taten Half-Orc Fighter Entertainer

While within the city of Neverwinter the companions are approached by their dwarf patron and friend Gundren Rockseeker. Gundren hires the party to escort a wagon from Neverwinter to Phandalin. While the party prepared Gundren went on ahead with a warrior, Sildar Haliwinter, to attend to business in the town while the characters follow with the supplies. Gundren informs them they are to be rewarded 10 GP a piece by the owner of Barthen's Provisions in Phandelvin when they deliver the wagon safely to the trading post.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

In the city of Neverwinter, a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to bring a wagonload of provisions to the rough-and-tumble settlement of Phandalin, a couple of days' travel southeast of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found "something big," and that he'd pay you ten gold pieces each for escorting his supplies safely to Barthen's Provisions, a trading post in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horse, along with a warrior escort named Sildar Hallwinter, claiming he needed to arrive early to "take care of business."

Og & Taten take the reins of the oxen while Ela'al and Galyil sit riding on the wagon.

You've encountered no trouble so far, but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

You've been on the Triboar Trail for about half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

Og and Taten stop the wagon and are the first to investigate as Galyil and Ela'al make their way off the wagon.  When Og and Taten have a moment to investigate the dead horses they immediately recognize these horses as belonging to Gundren Rockseeker and Sildar Hallwinter.  The horses have been dead for about a day, and it's clear the arrows killed the horses.

The saddlebags have been looted. Nearby lies an empty leather map case.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

The party is ambushed by a group of 4 goblins but though the battle was hard fought and some resources were expended the party won out.

The final goblin they chose to incapacitate instead of kill so that they could grill the creatures for information about where it came from and why it attacked them.

After the goblin awakens the party manages to gather a few pieces of information:

-They learn of a lair but are unable to convince the goblin to lead them to it though it does show the party where its at.

- They learn about 15 goblins dwell in the lair

- They learn their leader is a bugbear named Klarg. He answers to King Grol, chief of the Cragmaw Tribe, who dwells in Cragmaw Castle. The goblin provides directions to reach the castle which is about 20 miles north east of the lair indicated by the goblin in Neverwinter Wood.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

The party puts the goblin out of its misery after their interrogation and they investigate the path leading to the lair they learned about.  It is very apparent from a quick investigation that the Goblin have been using this place to stage ambushes for some time now.

The party finds a trail hidden behind thickets on the north side of the road that leads northwest. Og notices that about a dozen goblins have come and gone along this trail along with what appears to be two human sized bodies being drug in two. Surely this must be Gundren and Sildar!

The party decides to steer the wagon off the road and tie off the oxen while they pursue this lead further.

Og leads the way followed by Taten, Ela'al and finally Galyil.  The Gnome Paladin carefully looks around for anything suspicious as they move forward and he's thankful he did as he barely notices a snare hidden among debris on the trail.  He easily leads the others around it as they continue to move forward.  Og continues to keep a keen eye out and finds yet another trap as the Goblins hid a pit under a large amount of natural debris making it near impossible to notice with the naked eye.  Once he finds it he again leads the party around the trap avoiding disturbing it and possibly drawing unwanted attention.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

Following the goblins' trail, the party comes across a large cave in a hillside five miles from the scene of the ambush. A shallow stream flows out of the cave mouth, which is screened by dense briar thickets. A narrow dry path leads into the cave on the right-hand side of the stream.

The party though trying to be quiet cant avoid the loud clang of Og's armor and Taten becomes the one to pay the price.  Through thickets to their east that from their view appear impenetrable come two arrows, the first deflects off Taten's Leather armor but leaves a clear divot.  The second flies just past Tatens neck but cuts a thin line along his flesh leaving a trickle of blood to pour down his neck onto his chest.

The party fights back and forth and manage to quickly put the two goblins down after they survived the initial ambush.

On the east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, a small area in the briar thickets has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area as the goblins they just fought were doing.

The party uses this secluded place to take a short rest and then after their brief respite they enter the cavern.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

Just inside the cave mouth, a few uneven stone steps lead up to a small, dank chamber on the east side of the passage. The cave narrows to a steep fissure at the far end, and is filled with the stench of animals. Savage snarls and the sounds of rattling chains greet your ears where two wolves are chained up just inside the opening. Each wolf's chain leads to an iron rod driven into the base of a stalagmite.

The wolves fought, snarled, and pulled with all of their might to free themselves from their chains and go after the party but they proved too swift removing their threat without taking a scratch.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

The party decides to avoid the fissure and instead to follow further along the river.  Galyill lights a lamp as they get further in as the cavern is completely dark.  The others are able to get by with their darkvision.

The main passage from the cave mouth climbs steeply upward, the stream plunging and splashing down its west side. In the shadows, a side passage leads west across the other side of the stream.

In the shadows of the ceiling to the north, you can just make out the dim shape of a rickety bridge of wood and rope crossing over the passage ahead of you. Another passage intersects this one, twenty feet above the floor.

Og immediately recognizes the Goblin and points him out to the others.  They seem to notice each other simultaneously ... before the goblin has a chance to utter a sound the party burns the filthy creature down, finishing it off with a longbow shot from Taten.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

The party ignores the steep passage and continues to follow the river around.  Eventually they come to a set of stairs that leads up to a cavern half filled with two large pools of water. A narrow waterfall high in the eastern wall feeds the pool, which drains out the western end of the chamber to form the stream that flows out of the cave mouth below. Low fieldstone walls server as dams holding the water in. A wide exit stands to the south, while two smaller passage leads west.  The party is walking up one of the western passages when they come face to face with 3 goblins guarding this area.

The goblins ready themselves and combat ensues...The party easily deals with two of the goblins but the last one ran off up the southern exit.  The party heads to the south prepared for a likely ambush.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

Sacks and crates of looted provisions are piled up in the south end of this large cave. To the west, the floor slopes toward a narrow opening that descends into darkness.  In the middle of the cavern, the coals of a large fire smolder.

A huge Bugbear comes roaring out from behind a stalagmite shouting "Who Dares Defy Klarg!?"  The party instantly recognizes his name as the leader the goblin they interrogated told them about.

Combat ensues and proves to be a deadly battle without a true winner.  Galyil and Ela'al are killed Ela'al was overwhelmed and rushed and Galyil was killed while escaping.  Og and Taten were knocked unconscious but not before killing several goblins, nearly killing Klarg and slaughtering his dog.  Klarg was so distraught over the death of his dog and fearful Yemeek would attack while he had the upper hand that he left with the few goblins he had left under his command.

Klarg took the wagon full of supplies and made his way to Cragmaw Castle where he now resides.

Og and Taten were found and brought up to the section of the cave belonging to Yemeek.  When finally awoken they find themselves up on a rise surrounded by other goblins and sitting across from Sildar Hallwinter the Human warrior who was traveling with Gundren. Yemeek and the other goblins regularly tortures Sildar but they have helped Og and Taten to recover.  "You drove off Klarg now we sell you both."

Og and Taten have seen their belongings on the lower rise in the corner but have never been left alone long enough to try and mount an uprising.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

Gundren was smart and foresaw that there may be issues with the initial mission so he made sure to have a few small parties prepared to follow the same path he did to verify nothing went wrong and if it did to clean up the mess.

The first contingent was a small party of two.  The first an urchin from Neverwinter, a woman of the woods who couldn't pass up the opportunity to add a few coppers to her name.  The second was a human man bound in the jails of Neverwinter.  Sealamin Pegason a sorcerer who fell in with the wrong group as he feels everyone has a good side.  Sometimes that viewpoint helps him but in this case he became the scapegoat for another of his previous crews petty crimes.  Being a sorcerer never helped his case, but luckily for him Gundren new of his magical skill and his coin was enough to free the man as long as he was doing a duty and Gundren would take on the risk if he reoffended.

Xelael Half Elf Druid Urchin

&

Sealamin Pegason Human Sorcerer Criminal.

Both of them arrive and find the corpses of horses and goblins which leads them into the Goblin Caves.  After a small bit of exploration they hear the sound of something speaking which draws them into Yeemiks cave.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

When Sealamin and Xelael turn around the bend and find the group of goblins and are greeted by whooping and hollering as the various goblins in the room slobber and make a ruckess while occasionally lunging towards the intruders with all of their scimitars to bare.

Yemeek shouts above the others and quiets them down as the goblin puts his hand on Sildars battered and bruised shoulder at the top of the small ridge.

"More Intrudersss, ye seek to buy my slaves or are you going to be the newest addition?

Xelael immediately grabs for his staff and in his mind begins to try and align himself with the earth so that he may call upon the spells of the natural order. What he didn't anticipate was Sealamin stepping up, a suave and clever look in the man's face.

"You stand there and hold captive a man from the Coin Spinners and now you choose to threaten a man in good stead with the Arcane Brotherhood!?  Do you know what kind of deep shit your in Goblin?" Sealamin spouts his words with incredible clarity and fluidity and he finishes them off by flashing a symbol from under his robes of a boat on the water with a crown upon its sails. To any with the proper knowledge as Yemeek had would know that symbol represents the Arcane Brotherhood. The whole situation left Yemeek speechless.

Yemeek stares at Sealamin a torn and frustrated look on his face.  The goblin was part of a military force but many within that force were a part of or connected to various criminal elements.  He may have wanted to be out on his own but if Sealamin was correct and that symbol seemed to indicate he was he couldn't have a gang after his head.

Sealamin smiles ear to ear seeing how torn Yemeek truly was. "I could let you off but you will obey MY terms.  Release your prisoners into my stead along with any of their gear you have stolen. Let us leave untouched and I may be able to have this little incident forgiven."

Now what Yemeek didn't realize is that while Sealamin was a member of the Arcane Brotherhood it was not something the man was proud of nor was he in a position where he could wield any form of power among the group.  That and no others that were captured had any connection to the Coin Spinners.  For Yemeek he believed Sealamin whole heartedly and agreed to the deal, anything to keep his own neck connected to his shoulders.  At least he still had the cave not that Klarg was gone.

Sealamin smiled and helped the enslaved to recover their gear and return to the outside.  Outside they all setup camp and rest.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

Over the night of rest the party all get acquainted.  Sildar Hallwinter introduces himself, the human is around 50 years in age and proudly tells them all that he held a place of honor in the famous Griffon Cavalry of Waterdeep. He also passes along that he is an agent of the Lords Alliance.

He also shares a few other key pieces of information.

- The three Rockseeker Brothers(Gundren, Tharden, and Nundro) recently located an entrance to the long-lost Wave Echo Cave, site of the mines of the Phandelver's Pact.
        - 'More than 500 years ago, clans of dwarves and gnomes made an agreement known as the Phandelver's Pact, by which they would share a rich mine in a wondrous cavern known as Wave Echo Cave. In addition to it's mineral wealth, the mine contained great magical power.  Human Spellcasters allied themselves with the dwarves and gnomes to channel and bind that energy into a great forge (called the Forge of Spells), where magic items could be crafted. Times were good, and the nearby human town of Phandalin prospered as well. But then disaster struck when orcs swept through the North and laid waste to all in their path.'

        - 'A powerful force of orcs reinforced by evil mercenary wizards attacked Wave Echo Cave to seize its riches and magic treasures. Human wizards fought alongside their dwarf and gnome allies to defend the Forge of Spells, and the ensuing spell battled destroyed much of the cavern. Few survived the cave-ins and tremors, and the location of Wave Echo Cave was lost.'

- 'Klarg, the bugbear who leads this goblin band, had orders to waylay Gundren. I heard from the goblins that the 'Black Spider' sent word that the dwarf was to be brought to him. I don't know who or what the 'Black Spider is'

- 'Gundren had a map showing the secret location of Wave Echo Cave, but the goblins took it when they captured him. I believe that Klarg sent the map and the dwarf to the chief of the Cragmaws at a place called Cragmaw Castle. I don't know where that might be, but someone in Phandalin might know.'

- 'My contact in Phandalin is a human wizard named Iarno Albrek. The wizard traveled to the town two months ago to establish order there. After the Lords' Alliance received no word from Iarno, I decided to investigate.'

"Thank you all for your aid in saving my life.  My plan is still to travel to Phandalin since its the nearest settlement.  I can pay you a total of 50 gold once we arrive in Phandalin and I have an opportunity to get a loan of gold.  After this rest let us hurry to town I don't wish to be out here long unarmed as I am now.

Re: Episode 1: Goblin Arrows

As the party arrives at Phandalin...

The rutted track emerges from a wooded hillside, and you catch your first glimpse of Phandalin. The town consists of forty or fifty simple log buildings, some built on old fieldstone foundations. More old ruins-crumbling stone walls covered in ivy and briars-surround the newer houses and shops, showing how this must have been a much larger town in centuries past. Most of the newer buildings are set on the sides of the cart track, which widens into a muddy main street of sorts as it climbs toward a ruined manor house on a hillside at the east side of town.

As you approach, you see children playing on the town green and townsfolk tending to chores or running errands at shops. Many people look up as you approach, but all return to their business as you go by.
