The Dastavka moves towards the small island and dispatches the ships boat. Aside from the five security personnel, Assistant Medic Armstrong, Tanya, Lewis, Marcus, Duke and Illium, there are the thirty Labrysian rebels.

It does not take them long to reach the island.

Note, map for group 2 is the island. Landing locations/instructions?

In reply to Lewis Eugene Grey (msg # 15):

The Colonists tell you they will be at the top of the hill around the colony, and ask you to keep them informed of how things progress. They allow Natalie to go with them to talk about things with the colonists.

You have
1 APC (With a HMG and a sickbay)
2 Labrysians with 100 mm TML, Heavy Plasma Flamers, Hand Flamers
10 Labrysians with 15mm AM Rifles, Hand Flamers, Picks
5 Labrysians with 15mm AM Rifles, Hand Flamers, Picks
10 Labrysians with Heavy Plasma Guns, Gyrocs, Hand Flamers
3 Labrysians with Heavy Plasma Flamers, Hand Flamers, Picks

They will be commanded by Ronovan who takes orders from Lewis. He may pick any one of these configurations for himself, with the addition of a Hand Flamer if the configuration chosen does not have one already.

Presumably, the others will have
Duke, with Gauss Rifle, 2 x Gyrocs, Monowire sword, Powered Combat Armour (His own prototype)
Tanya with Laser Rifle with U/S 25mm GL, 64mm Mortar on her Grav bike, Space Biosuit
Marcus and Illiam will stay with the ships boat, flying it and manning the Turret as Illiam sees fit.
Listing Armstrong (Medical Assistant) will stay in the APC's sickbay. He is only armed with a Hand flamer and wears a space biosuit.

You will need to equip the security detail from the Armoury (including Ronovan, who may make requests)

-Security ('Joan' Hirikuri)-
-Security (Richard Thornhammer) - Skilled in LAW, GL, Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Beam Rifle and sword. May use the HMG in the APC's turret.
-Security (Private Tonkin) - Skilled with conventional Pistols, Rifles, Shotgun and Beam rifles, and Sword. May drive APC.
-Security (Ronny Redcoat)- Slightly Skilled in GL, LAW, LMG, Pistols, Rifles, Shotgun, Beam Rifles and Hand Flamers

You have left in the armoury

10 Heavy Laser Pistol
4 Laser Rifle
6 Laser Rifles with under-slung 25 mm PC Grenade Launcher
4 Storm Rifle, 10mm CLR
15 Hand Flamer

1 Limpit Mine Dispenser
15 x Shaped Charge Limpit mines
1 LAW 84mm

There are also a number of grenades available.

Hand Grenades, (use Throwing skill) 1 lb each

ex damage decreases by /3x range from blast, apply full DR
3 x Plasma, 6dx4 burn ex sur, 1 lb, fuse 2
10 x HE (frag), 8d+8 x2 cr ex [3d, 15 yard frag], 1 lb, fuse 2
10 x HEC (Concussion), 8d+8 x2 cr ex, 1 lb, fuse 2
10 x EMP, HT-8(2), 8 yard + 2d cr ex

25mm Grenades 0.22 lb each for launchers.
10 x Plasma, 6d burn ex sur
20 x HE (frag), 4d+4 cr ex [1d+1, 5 yard frag]
20 x HEC (Concussion), 4d+4 cr ex
10 x EMP, HT-8(2), 2 yard + 1d-2 cr ex
5 x Flare radius 250 yards
10 x Shaped Charges, (5d+5)x3(10) cr inc + 2d cr ex [1d+1]

Please give me a brief of your preparations. A successful Tactics roll will only come into play if I think you are doing something your character would know is a bad idea.

The following security take the following items:

-Security ('Joan' Hirikuri)- Laser Rifle with Underslung GL, Hand Flamer, Limpit Mine dispenser
-Security (Richard Thornhammer) - Laser Rifle with Underslung GL, Hand Flamer, Sword (His own). Mans the HMG in the APC's turret.
-Security (Private Tonkin) - Laser Rifle, Hand Flamer, Sword (His own). Drives the APC.
-Security (Ronny Redcoat)- Laser Rifle with Underslung GL, Hand Flamer, LAW

Joan Informs you that Limpit mines are not land mines...they have a much smaller explosive force as they are designed to be attached to the target. You did not provide any land mines.

Richard and Tonkin manage to find a good spot surrounded by rocks for the APC. They move some rocks onto the vehicle for better coverage, and add some branches and foliage to hide it quite well.

Ronny hides nearby with the LAW.

About 2 miles either side of them along the North East coast are a group of 10 Labrysians. Each group has the following:

1 Labrysians with 100 mm TML, Heavy Plasma Flamers, Hand Flamers
3 Labrysians with 15mm AM Rifles, Hand Flamers, Picks
2 Labrysians with 15mm AM Rifles, Hand Flamers, Picks
3 Labrysians with Heavy Plasma Guns, Gyrocs, Hand Flamers
1 Labrysians with Heavy Plasma Flamers, Hand Flamers, Picks

The third group, with
4 Labrysians with 15mm AM Rifles, Hand Flamers, Picks
1 Labrysians with 15mm AM Rifles, Hand Flamers, Picks
4 Labrysians with Heavy Plasma Guns, Gyrocs, Hand Flamers
1 Labrysians with Heavy Plasma Flamers, Hand Flamers, Picks

will follow Ronovans directions, wherever he is situating himself.

The ground is rough gravel, easy for vehicles and troops alike to transverse. There are plenty of loose rocks and shrubs for hiding, and you have some time to get there.

Illiam keeps the shuttle near the colony until ordered otherwise.

Tanya/Duke, please let me know where you are.

By the way, the Labrysians point out that in air, the APCs can travel at 740 mph. They are grav vehicles...

It is 4 hours before hostile are sighted. The Dastavka has a round trip of about 18,000 miles to the sight of the Destroyer, in addition to combat there and the combat here against the tank, so they can be expected back any time now. If all is well...

Those on the beach first sight a single APC coming out of the waves, about 100 yards offshore, about 1 mile northeast of Ronovans position.

See updated map for details. I don's have positions for Duke and Tanya, so unless I hear otherwise, I will assume they are hidden at the treeline with the APC.

You are getting the Westernmost Squad of Labrysians moving up, right, to near Ronovans position? Whilst you and the humans and APC with you move East then North to flank Fireteam 4, which are currently engulfed in a growing bushfire. Go that right?

As shown on updated map, right?

Ronovan are about 500 yards from their positions now...quite close enough to engage them, though with the standard -15 range penalty. This will drop to -11 at less than 500 yards, but if you plan to creep up on them, remember they are creeping away from you, probably at the same pace, so you may have to forgo stealth in order to get closer to them by moving faster than they are.

Of course, heavy plasma gun has 11 Acc, while Anti-Material Rifle has 9 Acc. They probably have DR50 armour on the torso, and DR30 armour elsewhere, so laser rifles would not be so impressive...

My Bad, Ronovan is already 500 yards away from Fireteam 3. He will have about ten minutes of combat before the Ships Boat can have you on the scene.

But you are right about the effect of the laser rifles...you would need to to aimed shots at the skull (-7 to hit)...6d does an average of 21 damage per shot, and with an armour divisor of 2 that would reduce the total DR to 19 (Labrysians have natural DR of 5 and the head has 7), meaning on average 2 points of tight burning damage would penetrate to the head per shot, but this would be 8 points of injury because it is the skull. Easy to see how a good roll here could kill...but you would know this already.

As Fireteam 3 moves north to engage Rebel Squad 1, Ronovans squad moves up behind them, catching them when they stop to engage. As they do, a fifth fireteam approaches their left flank.

Squad 2 moves north to assist Ronovans squad, while Squad one exchanges fire with at least one survivor of Fireteam 4 and Fireteam 3. They report another casualty.

The fire around Fireteam 4 begins to take hold, and is spreading slowly down the hill as the wind pushes it. The ships boat is by this time has arrived to pick up the APC and whoever is wanting a ride.

There are no reports of sightings from colonists looking over the crash sites of the other two APCs.

As Ronovans team engages Fireteam 5, Squad 1 engages Fireteam 3. Both rebel squads take one casualty, but dispatch with the enemy fireteam. However, one survivor from Fireteam 3, and Fireteam 6 also attack squad 1, bringing their total casualties to five, or half the squad. From the radio, not all are dead yet. With the fire growing around what is left of fireteam 3, it is getting hard to see what is happening there, or see fireteam 6 for that matter.

A seventh fireteam attempts to assist fireteam 5, but only reveals their position in firing on Ronovands team from 600 yards away.

The APC and whoever else was coming with it have been able to board the ships boat by now.

The Colonist are reporting that some figures seem to be exiting the water near where the South-western APC went down. At least 2 have been spotted running up the beach for cover, but there are possibly more.

Squad 2 does not have any ammunition for the chain guns, but they do have five of the 15mm Anti-Material Rifles and three plasma rifles. Closing to just under a mile as the APC sprays the signatures behind the rocks, the Labrysians exchange fire. Unfortunately, the long range rifles seem to be anticipated, and do not seem to hit, but the plasma manage to connect to two on each side, with one on each side taking more serious damage.

The Heavy Gauss Machine Gun on the APC seems to be effectively keeping them pinned though, and there are a few radio transmissions now they have clearly been detected.

As the Labrysians agents pressed the attack on the hostile troops, taking another hit as they did so, Illiam moved the ships boat directly to Lewis' last known position, based on sensor reading Gun sent to him, arriving as a single Labrysian stood over a bloody corpse, briefly, until the ships weapon blasted most of his body into atoms at almost point blank range.

Marcus at this range was able to use the beam weapon in the turret to terrifying effect against the remaining troops, scoring direct hits with minimal collateral damage to the foilage, whilst the armour of the ships boat proved well able to stand against the plasma weapons they held, turning the remainder of this fight into a cleaning up operation.

Unfortunately, on recovery of Lewis, Armstrong pronounced him dead. His left arm is badly burnt, and his left leg burnt clean off. To add to that, the last Labrysian there had performed a coup-de-gras with a 25 mm shaped charge grenade to the head moments before Marcus dealt with him.

The Labrysians located and engaged, the APC and the rest of the Labrysians make short work of those who are left. They gather their weapons and return to the Colony. The third APC seems quiet. Perhaps too quiet. No missiles were sent there, and no survivors have come from that crash site.

So far there have been a total of 5 deaths, 4 Labrysians and Lewis, and 7 injuries, all Labrysians. The colony seems to be stunned in silence as they watch you unload the dead Labrysians and try to treat those injured. Some of the children try to come out and look, but are pushed back by their parents into the bunkers they are hiding in.

"Thank you for your help. Our condolences for your losses.

Whilst we are sure there are some more of them about from one of the flying saucers, with some assistance and some of the weaponry we can deal with them. To this end, we would ask that many of the captured weapons be left with us, so we can learn how to use them and make use of them. This is a fishing base, but the main manufacturing base, with most of our production, was lost in an attack before you arrived. We will need to replace our manufacturing capacity as soon as possible, and re-establish ties with Earth and particularly, Israel.

We also ask that you leave some of the aliens with us once we have dealt with the rest of the hostile aliens, so that we can know who will die for us and who will try to kill us.

Meir gritted his teeth at the sight of the destruction. He'd personally dug scores of those graves and to see them further desecrated by the wildlife, well, it was nearly more than he could bear.
"Unless they look familiar to us colonists, I'd avoid using those speeders. They're hiding from anything and anyone alien and should be moving only at night."
"I'll show you the exact route we worked out for them on my laptop. They weren't going to divert from that unless they absolutely had to."

With a few keystrokes he zoomed in on an area a few dozen miles across.
"With the prevailing winds and currents, and if they hadn't run into anything to delay them, they should be somewhere along this stretch...here."
"They don't have a working radio so the only way to communicate is face to face. It would be best to locate them, land some distance away and approach on the surface. I'd suggest getting in front of them if possible and letting them come to us."

"That fruit is a trap, well, not the fruit itself, that's just the bait they use."
"There's a sort of flying ant about an inch long. They conceal themselves in the bushes around that particular fruit and if anything comes along and disturbs them, they swarm over their prey, inject some type of paralytic, then strip the flesh off like those terran piranhas."
"And before you ask, no, armour, not even full environmental or space suit provide protection. It only slows them down a little."

The close call had shaken him more than a little.

Regrettably I don't have plenty of ammunition foryou to practice with... although I am sure Kalishnakov could provide all you'd ever need in time. The laser rifles are not that complex, but require a slightly different mindset... There is no ballistic drop... you bore-sight it and that is where it shoots, regardless of range. But penetration and damage fall off some with range... sometimes a lot in fog, although since you can't see far anyway, it's not a major drawback there. They need fairly powerful batteries and spares instead of bullets. Damage is slightly less than with a high powered rifle and penetration is about the same.  I expect we could teach the basics in a few hours and given a bit of practice, have two or three of you reasonably adept in a day. I'll have to see how many batteries we have... you get about 80 shots per battery.

Yes, recharging them shouldn't be a big issue.
Dry firing the grenades won't teach you a lot... it's learning the ballistics and how to aim them that is the trick. let me see what the main ship has... might be some help there.

I wonder if we could snag the fusion drive out of one of those APCs and make you an useful engine ...  sure would last longer and give you extra power.

The APCs have small fission reactors weighing nearly 5t. The one that is beached is still functional, though it will need a new coolant pump, most likely available on one of the other wrecks. Duke is probably the most skilled person to remove it, but most of the colonists are familiar, in theory at least, with the technology. Familiarity can be gained with a little time.

Ronovan, you have access to all the weapons in the CURRENT LABRYSIAN CONTINGENT ARMOURY in the Dastavka's post in the Gear thread. Please select what you with to have modified for humans. Remember, you still have about 24 Labrysians under you to equip from this list as well, including yourself.

"Nobody in the crew has much experience with weapons beyond the basics I showed them a few days ago. If they're attacked they're not going to be able to put up much of a fight, even with advanced weapons. I know there's not supposed to be any more hostile aliens out there, but can you really be sure of that? Perhaps a few of us should go with them?"
It would be a good chance to train the colonists, and it'd give the Dastavka crew members some time breathing fresh sea air instead of everyone else's recycled body odour.

Technology and the focus on rebuilding had almost eliminated his usefulness to the colony for the foreseeable future - he was an explorer, not a farmer, builder or process worker. He needed to be out in the wilderness somewhere, taking risks others baulked at and expanding the collective knowledge.

"So where's my bunk then, and what duties do you need me to carry out?"
"I'm rated as expert in camouflage, cartography, planetary navigation, surveying, earthlike geography, tracking, and rifles. Can also handle myself with basic biology, mainly specimen collection and preliminary processing."
"While on the New Tel-Aviv, my duties revolved mainly around the operation and maintenance of the communications array and computers, including external repairs, and as the medic for my damage control team. Those technical skills are probably a little rusty at the moment, especially since I'm used to equipment from about a hundred years in your past."

Well Tanya can introduce you to our ways of planetary and interstellar navigation... then we'll work on learning the other skills you could use.

OOC-GM hasn't really decided as to whether we have a single berth stateroom or one not being used.

OOC: With Pilot and Captain sharing a room, there does seem to be a single stateroom available...

The room offered to Meir is one of the nicest on the vessel, suited to a captain.

Once Kat has finished her gin, both heran Cyril return to the bridge, where the rest of the crew are waiting. The Dastavka lifts off effortlessly into orbit and leaves the planet.

"Back to Aegir, then?"

The navigtion is fairly simple. Dastavka easily moves to a jump point Tanya designates, and Duke activates the jump drive to enter hyperspace. The stars seem to streak from view as he does so.

The vessels time in hyperspace seems a long time for Meir, as he spends a lot of time reading about new technology, and talking with Duke about how it works. The hyperspace bubble seems particularly weird to him.
