Diesel? ... that's really old tech... not sure we have anything that would substitute for it.  As for another power source... hmmmmm... let me think.

I wonder if we could snag the fusion drive out of one of those APCs and make you an useful engine ...  sure would last longer and give you extra power.

Duke goes back aboard the Shuttle ... Grabbing the radio he contacts Ronovan.
" Ronovan, Can You spare some weapons for these folks...a Crew served and some hand weapons?  Also can we pull the power plants out of the two APCs that attacked us and make a working engine for these folks?"

"Alien technology we don't understand," he said wryly.
"What could possibly go wrong with that?"

"Rather have human tech, or whatever he is," he nodded at Armstrong, "Than be constantly reminded of what those filthy Labs did to us!"

"Suerrat, to be sure. They are not the worst Aliens, by a long shot. Just some of them in the grip of some horrid religion. Hate the religion, but you will find some of the Labrysians are good folk. If it is any comfort, this same religion has done the same thing to countless of their own kind as well."

And if you take their tech and update it for Human use, it becomes your tech ... trying to teach you all that has happened since you lost contact with Earth is going to take a while. Adapting what you have to your needs is one of the strengths of the Human race.

If Ronovan hadn't been talking over the radio and instead been there in person, Meir probably would had reacted somewhat differently. Instead, not recognising that the disembodied voice belonged to the same alien race that killed almost everyone he knew and cared for, he simply nodded his acknowledgement and continued with the final work before the small ship could depart.

The APCs have small fission reactors weighing nearly 5t. The one that is beached is still functional, though it will need a new coolant pump, most likely available on one of the other wrecks. Duke is probably the most skilled person to remove it, but most of the colonists are familiar, in theory at least, with the technology. Familiarity can be gained with a little time.

Ronovan, you have access to all the weapons in the CURRENT LABRYSIAN CONTINGENT ARMOURY in the Dastavka's post in the Gear thread. Please select what you with to have modified for humans. Remember, you still have about 24 Labrysians under you to equip from this list as well, including yourself.

OK Meir, I can do more good back at the main camp... are these folks safe to travel there by sea? I'd like to take the ship back there  and get some stuff fixed up to improve things... not sure how we can fix up power for that boat... a 5 ton fission system might be too heavy.

"We can be back to the fishing village within a week, if you are sure it is safe. This vessel can carry over 250 t, so a 5 t nuclear plant should not be a problem. Of course, an electric motor will help, as well as some serious firepower if there is any."

"It's their ship," he shrugged before leading Duke a little distance away for a quite chat.
"Nobody in the crew has much experience with weapons beyond the basics I showed them a few days ago. If they're attacked they're not going to be able to put up much of a fight, even with advanced weapons. I know there's not supposed to be any more hostile aliens out there, but can you really be sure of that? Perhaps a few of us should go with them?"
It would be a good chance to train the colonists, and it'd give the Dastavka crew members some time breathing fresh sea air instead of everyone else's recycled body odour.

"I'll stay, along with any other volunteers. The ship's already short on crew, even with all the automated systems built into it, and I probably know these waters better than anyone still alive."
The ship had accommodations for 15 people, most of which were required to help sail the vessel. More could be carried in the cargo hold or on deck in less than optimal comfort.
"Before you go, do you have anything to use to fix the radio antenna. It's currently only able to broadcast short range because of damage sustained previously."

"Yes, the antenna went overboard with a piece of the mizzen mast in a storm three weeks ago that also claimed two young men. We fixed the mast, but were returning to the main base with lumber when they were attacked. Most of the sails have automatic winches now, so we can get by with 6 crew most of the time, but a few extra would help."

Duke is able to masterfully fix the antenna with duct tape and wire found in the ships boat. Reception is very good, perhaps a little better than before, but after three weeks, anything sounds wonderful!

It'll work OK from most any direction, but will do best if the boat is aimed toward or directly away from the signal being received. You'll need a compass as well to know the direction.

"Better drop the sails," Meir suggested to the ships master when the shuttle came back into view.
"Easier for them to come aboard if we're not under way I think."
Whether or not they dropped anchor too was up to the master.

"Just keep the jib up. That should be enough to maintain control I think."
"But it's your ship, I'm just making a suggestion based on my own pilot and sailing knowledge."
