Mapping the unknown

First we’ll go there, then we’ll go here, then maybe over there and play around a while..... oh, Numbers?  Um 1337, 1437, 1538, 1537 .... then perhaps return for re-supply.

Mapping the unknown

In reply to Cyril Zotmund (msg # 2):

The jump to 1337 goes uneventfully. This system has a single star and just two Gas giants, though one of them have a very interesting moon. Even a precursory glance shows that the moon is tropical and lush, though the atmosphere is dense despite the lower gravity, with a large section of the planet under sea. It will about 12 weeks to map this system properly, including the planet using the ships boat.

No hostile craft are detected, as this system is well patrolled.

If well patrolled, someone hasn't already mapped it? We will anyways ... and explore the moon a little to...

Mapping the unknown

In reply to Cyril Zotmund (msg # 4):

Just basic navigation mapping had been done. No moons mapped, except by you previously. But some mapping if the next system will be needed before jumping.

The moon clearly supports life, being tropical in nature. About 2 weeks would be needed to map the planet. Perhaps that is why no merchant has done it yet...

Mapping the unknown

In reply to Fate (msg # 5):

In the two weeks that pass while you are mapping the moon, a small merchant fleet jumps into the system, refuels, and departs. The Miratova is escorting a number of smaller merchant ships bound for Aegis from Chrysolite.

Despite the dense atmosphere, the warm tropical climate is a welcome change after the cold Talz world, and you find the crew making up some of the weirdest of excuses to 'examine the effects of warming the fuel cells' on the vast beaches after preliminary scans showed no large predators in the water, and no dangerous bacterii. Oddly, the mapping process seems to be taking longer than expected despite half the crew being planet-side for much of the second, and then third week.

PO Kyamoto, is there some sort of enervating gas or organism they all caught, or just the nice warm relaxing beaches and tropics?

"Say what you want about long strolls on the beach, Katty, enjoying the sun and all the relaxing weather but nothing will quite compare to the soft humming of an engine. Space is good, keeping it going is good too he said as he cocked the hat on his head.

Duke had not even attempted to pretend, he had visited the planet and sported only some light sandals, shorts and a hat. Taking his time to enjoy the planet, and recuperate after the months of hard work he'd just finished. It was a great change of pace.

"Though we should probably offer to map more of these planets, for a while."

It didn't take long though before he was back to work, on the probes.

Mapping the unknown

In reply to Katherine 'Kat' Steele (msg # 17):

Duke spends the week in hyperspace continuing to develop the raw materials for computers in order to make computerized targeting systems for all guns. Using fine sand gathered from the last planet, he succeeds in refining it sufficiently to develop 20 silicon wafers for microchip production. Further, raw materials for the rest of the computers are developed. By the time the ship leaves hyperspace, he has a number of raw materials.

Various other members of the crew practice at various things, while Cyril and Kat are having fun testing the new bed and Kats new Gin concoctions.

The signal indicating the exit from hyperspace goes off at 2100 on February 12th, 2172. Cyril as usual gets everyone ready, but this time there is nothing immediately awaiting them.

System 1437 is unremarkable, with 2 planets in orbit and a single gas giant. No alarms go off to indicate any proximity, though long range scans indicated that at least one of these planets would be habitable. Not having access to any scans from within this sector, it will take about 3 weeks, everything going well, to properly map the system and all planets within, as well as conduct long range scans of the next system.

Assuming nothing happens to interfere with those plans.

We use one of the remote scouting Missiles to precede us as we start the mapping and checks for life. We recover and refuel the missile, downloading all it's information to our computers for further analysis and storage.

Should we start a private thread "The love affair between a Captain and his hot pilot"?

As mentioned, one planet is found lifeless and without atmosphere, but the second supports life. The preliminary details gathered by the probe are as follows" Diameter: 7300 miles. Standard Nitorgen-Oxygen atmosphere without taint, of normal pressure and similar average temperature to earth, but there seems to be less water, with only about 1/3 of the surface being water. 0.85 G gravity, and strong winds were detected in several locations. Large desert expanses with few mountains ranges. Photos show plant life similar to cacti and some small trees spread fairly sparsely.
