Rewards and character development.

I will post all rewards here. It will be the players responsibilities to keep character sheets up to date, though I will check in from time to time. Rewards are for each player named.

Question on Points-  You granted four CP, which I expended on things I have done in past game sessions, to improve those skills.. We just spent two weeks working with this APC and Gauss cannon ... I realize thath's no where near the 200 hours needed for a point in either, but would like some credit toward these skills.  My suggestion is opening the skill at 0 points and adjusting the default to skill-  one more than you'd have at 1 point.
Default is supposed to do that but doesn't alwys, in my experince.

In reply to Cyril Zotmund (msg # 10):

Older versions of GURPS had half a skill point, which from memory improved on the default by 2. So an easy skill with half a skill point was at att -2, average at att-3 and so on.

The problem with introducing such a change now is that there are many times it would have been very useful in the past, but they were not used because they were not options then. I could consider that as a house rule only if all the players want it, but I suspect it was dropped from GURPs for a reason.

Familiarity or lack thereof with items used with skills should cover that. So you are now familiar with Gunner(Machine Gun), negating the -2 penalty that would have applied on top of skill default, but the basic skill still needs to be learnt.

Yes, I remember the half point and have complained about losing it... but losing the -2 does much the same, just harder to track. Entering the skill at zero points 9if it will let us) will do that.

In reply to Cyril Zotmund (msg # 23):

Despite having duties, anyone who is willing to devote the time during the 75 days (maximum 600 hours) you are here can  improve one skill. Remember, it takes 200 hours of Learning to gain one point in a skill (I include languages in this).

Work normally counts as 1 hour of learning in 4, but in Dukes case, since you have easily worked 200 hours in the game so far on fusion reactors, you can add 1 point to Mechanic (Fusion Reactors). Most of your time here was working with fusion reactors.

Self teaching counts 1 hour every two. With the language of the Talz, I would consider this as self teaching, since none of them are professional teachers, and the benefit of amateur teachers is offset by the very unusual language they have. Any other teaching they offer is offset by language difficulties...

Note that if you spend all your time with the Talz, you can learn the language and Culture, gaining 1 point in each as per B294, as well as learning a skill from them. But that means spending ALL the 75 days with them, only sleeping on the ship!

OK, I have 3 points to spend, so lets go with Psychometry (18 points) and Telesend (27 points) (alternatively Mind Link w/ Kat for 5 Points)
I assume ESP level 1 and Telepathy Level 1? I don't think I have enough points to buy those too... the each cost 5 points per level.
I did buy Telekinesis at some point, so that could be converted to Telepathy... basically 8 points to work with and would need 33 minimum as I read GURPS, less any GM mandated waivers.  Not sure how the self taught weighs in ... as obviously I have spent quite a while (from before the games start) trying to learn/do these things, and there was only a cost in personal time.

Living with the Talz

In reply to Cyril Zotmund (msg # 29):

Neither Telepathy nor ESP exist as advantages in GURPs, hence I had to look deeper.

The critical success means you have worked out the basic principles of one ability. The ability does need to be developed though.

I am happy for you to use the Telekenesis advantage since I cannot find when you got it. So the three cp spare, =5 from Telekenesis and 2 from time training, to give you 10 points.

Psycometry and Telesend are worth quite a bit more...you should have at least one point tin each, but the advantages would not be usable until they are fully paid for. The do not have to be paid for evenly, though. The other option is to choose abilities less costly...

If we work of developing these in your personal time, then we should probably go with no more that 10 hours self-taught per week, on average. Some more (such as in warp), but some not at all, as building a relationship with Kat will take a LOT of time. So we are looking at 1 point every 40 weeks...since the game started in January 2170, and it is now November 2171, that would be about another 2 points...but you only got the critical success now! So we cant really backdate it to character creation or before, or points should have been spent on it then! Not to mention the attention that secret psi colleges should have paid you then!

Really, we have to keep this balanced with all the other folk who might be spending their time developing other skills or abilities.

Telepathy and ESP exist... look at pages 256-257 of CHARACTERS

The way it works in GURPS is you buy an area (TELEKINESES for instance) and then develop skills with in those areas. Clumsy and expensive, but it's their way.

Most of the cheaper skills are cheap for a reason, they are mostly of little value. Some have other side affects (Animal Friend wants you to be a Vegetarian)... so I'll work on my skills.  the 10 points will grant the areas of ability; then I'll work on the skills; although how you know you have achieved an area w/o being able to use any skill escapes me.

May I suggest that the 10 points grant the areas, and a crit allows you to use the skill. As you put points into it, your die roll for success increases. To start, my skill in Psychometry would be 13+1 (IQ + Level) - 18 [succeeds on a crit] after I put 2 points in it, I succeed on a 3,4,5 or 6 and each additional 2 points adds another +1 to my success roll. The difference between 5 and 14 is 9, so at 2 points per +1, I eventually work up to a normal skill level.

For telesend, it would be 3 points [because 9x3=27]; Mind Link with Kat would be MUCH cheaper, as we are close (married). Per the rules only 1 point if she is close.

In reply to Cyril Zotmund (msg # 31):

They exist as talents, not as advantages.

Reading through, you suggest that a psi buy at least one level as a talent, and is then free to work on the abilities associated with it? That makes sense, then. So 1 level of Psycokinesis and 1 level of ESP then, and you can now start working on an ability of your choice for each. That sounds reasonable.

The side effects are often associated with the advantages for other reason. I see no reason someone with the psi talent 'Animal Friend' was vegetarian...carnivores would not like them at all!

For Minklink, Kat must also develop the psi ability or it is limited to one way communication! Simply being married is not enough to allow her to send thoughts to you without a similar ability of her own. Telesend is worth 27 points, but is transmit only, and Kat does NOT require the ability for that. Sending to her receives a +3 to skill because of the relationship, but does not reduce the cost of the advantage.

Note that Mind Reading, part of Mindlink, requires you to be able to see the target. Mindlink also reduces the maximum range possible for Telesend, which is theoretically unlimited.Cost of Mindlink also does not depend on the value of the other person to you, but I would think it rather would increase the skill in a similar way to Telesend.

Incremental increases sound reasonable. I would go with 10% increases corresponding to the cost of the ability/10, rounding up. So for Telesend, worth 27 points, 10% rounded up is 3 points. Once you have 3 points, you have only a -9 to your ability, and for every 3 points thereafter, the penalty drops by one. This will mean that the jump is from -2 to zero for the last three points, from 24 to 27, but this can represent fully mastering the ability. This principle will then be easy to adapt for any ability.

OK Talents... I said Areas, not Advantages but your way will work... I used nine as it fit better and I like simple round numbers.
but ten is doable too...  We'll stick with telesend and Psychometry ... I understood the Mind Link was one way...  but for the difference, Telesend offers more flexibility.

In reply to Bonny Taching (msg # 58):

Piloting(Aerospace) would be used to land on a planet, while piloting (High Performance Spacecraft) would be used to fly a starship.

Guns(Rifle) would be the skill for a storm rifle.

The social stigma (minority group) can't be bought off; it is a function of Vilani Society, but you can buy Acting and Disguise skills to hide your heritage.

The rest are fine.

How does "Piloting -Contragrav" compare and contract with Piloting(Aerospace) &/or Piloting (High Performance Spacecraft) ?

Bonny want to claim the looted Stoemrifle. Is that ok? Is so, where do I find the stats for it, please?

Also, Bonny has had the Perk "Passing Appearance [1]" for a long while. Is that disallowed?

In reply to Luretha Setlock (msg # 61):

Passing appearance is fine; it does not change her ethnicity, but she looks like a Vilani. She still has a Geonee accent and habits though.

Interesting, it actually states that this allows buying off racial stigma? I will have to think that through.

Storm Rifle stats are in Ultra-tech,

Fine Storm Rifle with HUD sight, ST:10, Weight 10 lbs, LC3, $5,400, -$1800 trade in for carbine
10mm CLR Rifle rounds: Acc: 6+3 (With Helmet), Dam: 9d pi+, Range 1,300/5,800, RoF: 3, 12+1(3) shots, 1.2 lb mag

Piloting(Contragrav) is used for vehicles with contragrav drives, like many Vilani vehicles, typically air rafts and G-Carriers
Piloting (Aerospace) is used in atmospheres for starships and starship-drives, typically many AK small craft.
Piloting (HP Spacecraft) is used for starships > 1G speed in space.

Sdian, good to add yours, I have done the girls though. Suggestions will be noted.

"Passing Appearane (Passing Compelexion): Your ethnicity isn't readily apparent to onlookers".

Bonny character notes have said from very early on:
"2) Work on her mannersims to eliminate non-verbal clues to her Geonee origin.
(In mechanics terms, the Passing Appearance Perk would allow the Disadvantage Social Stigma -Minority Group to be bought off at usual cost).>
In narrative terms may inclune body-scupting.
Going to assume that this is progressive, so will buy it off in 5 stages: 1CP, +2CP, +3CP+, +4CP & +5CP; total 15.)

So I'm thinking like, IDK, Madonna, folks can change how they look.**
If you recall, this was step #2 of an 11 step programme and was devised very shortly after character introduction (as a PC).

======
**OK, so almost all of this is off stage but is captured in CP expenditure. I've phased it to be in 5 awards of CP before this comes home, i.e. reflects time invested, and it's fundamental to Bonny's pysche. If you disallow it, then it's fine. (Actually means the player gains 1CP to spend (from the perk) but this was all deep-background RP driving the mechanics. It's how I do this on characters I'm  really invested in. i.e. put the stats together and then use those to inform the motives and use that to drive the RP and that to tune the mechanics. I'm not imaginative enough to do it the other way round. It why I've come to love GURPS - you can do that level of ultrafine tuning. I've reached that level of investment (aka connection) with Hannatti and Roahfustion, getting there with Kenyan, but still quite a way off with Brutus.)

======
Sorry for the lengthiness; I hope I haven't been a bore

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone.

For presents, for each character you play (ie not Ally!) roll on a D6

1: +10 CP
2: +5 cp
3: An alien artifact will be found soon! You get to have some say in what it will do.
4: You get to choose a type of Ally to be added soon. No more than 8 cp worth, but you can choose the FOA and strength, as well as type. I will then mix them into the storyline! They don't have to be human, or even sentient, but must exist somewhere in this universe (ie no Robots, but pets are fine!)
5: Remove/reduce one disadvantage worth up to 5 cp. This may take a side quest...
6: News from Home! A Terra intelligence officer will give you a piece of information you would have no way of knowing. It can be about the war, family members, lost lovers, etc.

Ho, Ho, Ho!

Want to put this towards moving from Comfortable to Wealthy.
(Yes, I know this is probably sub-optimal but it's part of her deep background development plan.
Hoping for some scenes where Bonny can earn some CPs rather than 'merely' keep engines running smoothly, important though that is.)

Brutus: lose -5CP disadvantage

I'm going to have a bad head in the morning.

The reroll for Bonny (msg #89 above) is the same result. happy with that. Just need to find a way to gain another 5Cp to become wealthy.      Notes: Buying this off in stages (which is enabled by the Perk: Passing Appearance [1]).
  b) Independent Income [0] => Independent Income [1]; Delta +1
Notes: Might be income from investments.. Do we need to go down the rabbit hole for details or can this just be in the
background? The money actually is pretty irrelevant it's just RP towards demonstrable independence from her family.
  c) HP:  12   [2] => HP:  13   [4]; Delta +2

2 points towards reducing Social Stigma, no problem.
2 points to add to HP, no problem.

1 point towards interdependent income...this should be as a result of purchasing shares or something. It is not just paying for it with cp. There has to be something associated with it.

Base starting wealth for this tech level is $50,000, and this is 1% of that per point, so $500 per month, modified for wealth level as is the starting wealth. Given most investments are about 2% of the capital investment after tax (of course they vary widely, but this is probably a good base figure), you should spend about $25,000 on investments per point. The cp ensures it continues.

Buying a business with Allies does achieve this, but it also achieves a whole lot more (Providing a place to use as a base, allies and contacts, etc.) Hence buying a local business costs more as well...both in cash and cp. it is a bigger personal investment in all respects.

No problems with Sdians choices, but I have to question the value of his Allies. 100% of your value for Ally is 5 points, -1 point for a dependent. Frequency of appearance of 9 or less when you use them to control your starship all the time seems pretty minimal, no?

No doubt, since they are really all much more like family ... they aren't exactly dependant on me or me on them, but close. The loss of one of them would be heartbreaking as well as hard to replace. I am assuming the relationship is mutual as well. (I think we paidoff a good bit of it by balancing the cost of the ally off against them being dependant to some extent. I am not sure of why Leticia and Gulzina are any less valuable in points at this point either.  Who the unnamed Ally Dependants are, is the children i assume, so they should just be dependants right now.

Ah, loved ones, so value as dependants is doubled. That would explain that. Leticia and Gulzina are younger, hence their value is just 75%, but that could be increased any time.

They depend on you for income, so that is very regular. However, you also depend on them very frequently for day to day stuff, as we would any family member, so accurately representing their frequency of appearance as Allies I would think would be well over half the time...you use them pretty much every mission in crucial roles! Hence my thinking that FOA should involve a multiplier of 3x, meaning each should cost 12 cp. They represent a pretty big part of your life!

I concur... Nelaroi is our pilot, Kuretha is our Powerplants and drives technician, and Jurelda is our cargo & business expert.
Jureldais also our Master at Arms it would seem, and manages the gunnery teams and the anti-boarding efforts.
Gulzina seems to be on track to become our physician, although Nelaroi is also quite competent.
Leticia seems to be on track to cover Navigation and any outdoor skills.
Both Leticia and Gulzina are progressing well and get a raise to $8000 a month.

So now all I need is a large chunk of points to upgrade everyone.

Bonnie is a separate character and not a wife, so while she is extremely important as the Engineer aboard, I have limited say.

4- Write your own mini adventure, to be introduced in the next six months, that will be worth 5 cp!
5- Spend 5 cp on skills only, related to very effective learning for any skill you have a teaching program for.
