Re: M4 WG: Harsh Climates

The climate takes all the fun out of a cross-country jog, but at least with the speeder bike you can take shifts resting and have it carry all your gear. Nevertheless, your spirits improve when, distantly, you can hear birdsong and insects begin buzzing around. Treacherously, the thought enters your head that this won't be so bad if it's over soon.

X Failure indicates X wounds. X Threats indicate X Strain.
X Success + Y Advantages = X+Y Boosts on Vigilance check

A hummock of dry earth that you had taken for only one of hundreds just like it shifts. Suddenly amid a cloud of dust there is a creature. It is large, fully the size of a bantha, though it stands on two legs. Its clawed forelegs hang in front of its muscular torso and its forward-thrust head bears a large, toothy mouth with a prominent overbite. Sand spills off its ridgelike back, revealing thick bones protruding through leatherlike skin. It blinks its beady eyes clear of dust, opens its mouth, and growls.

The creature's badlands camouflage was so excellent that you came within a dozen meters without noticing. Now it is Close to you, close enough that with a few bounds of its powerful back-bent legs it might be on top of you.

Vigilance and first action.

Anders steps back and draws both of his pistols, one in each hand. He watches the creature for any indication as to its motives as he aims for its head. If it looks to charge he will open fire on the beast and hope for the best.

The sniper is struggling with the heat, weight and fatigue. He is slow to shoot, his body recovering in a state of mild torpor, and the shot itself is poorly aimed, fizzling into the beasts flanks as it springs.

He sighed as the Pantoran blues in his music system took a melancholy riff. It was becoming one of those days.

Even in his weary form, the sign of movement out of the corner of his eye was enough to get Forim moving.  Diving to the side of the group he draws his pistol and snaps off a shot.

The shot strikes home, lancing into the creatures midsection right between a pair of scales.

Anders 3
Forim 3
Roger 2
Wissa 2
Xyklo 1
Zeic 0

Anders' blaster bolts strike the creature on its neck and shoulders, leaving bloody burns. Another bolt hits the creature in the face, between its small eyes. It stumbles and raises a hand defensively. Rogers' bolts strike its claws, disorienting it.

Enraged at its sudden pain and the flashing lights, the creature counterattacks. It charges towards Anders and swings its mighty claw. The claw crashes into him, jerking him to the side and leaving a brutal cut. His head whiplashes, leaving him dizzy. The sudden movement makes it harder for Xyklo to track the beast with his gun.

The Force rolled 1 success, 2 advantages, 1 triumph using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 2P 3A 1S 2D.  Brawl.
9 Damage pre-soak. Disoriented.

Harder, but not impossible. Xyklo's shot catches the creature under its ribs, causing the soft tissue to rupture. The beast stumbles in shock as its guts pour out. It collapses on the ground, moaning as it struggles to comprehend what has happened. Then Zeic blows a hole in its head and it is dead.

Fight over.

Anders lay on the ground in a crumpled heap for several seconds before pushing himself into a sitting position. He removes a stim pack from his belt and applies the contents to the wound in his side, staying sitting for a few minutes as it takes effect.
"I am not going to be able to take many more of those sorts of hits."

He looks at the dead beast now on it's side and still for a few moments. Then he keeps the others covered while they try to recover some of the meat.

”I think this bug take his chances waiting for more berries. Vegetarianism never smelt so good!”

Cleaning the grit and dust from all his firearms, Xyclo sets his datapad to those Pantoran winter blues while he works, allowing those who would want some fresh steak to rig an improvised grill.

Re: M4 WG: Harsh Climates

The meat looks gamey, like thick corded muscle. The creature must be recovering from a long hibernation.

Nevertheless, its size is enough to furnish you with a large quantity of bloody, fresh meat. You cannot see any parasites or signs of infection, so it should be good to eat. You wrap it in disposable waxy paper and attach it to the speeder bike.

An hour or so later, you reach the edge of a canyon. Long before you get there you can smell it: fresh water and vegetation. You can hear the sound of rushing water, and when you get close you can see it: a waterfall, gently cascading down the wall of the canyon into a lush, verdant forest. Mist fills the air along with birdsong and insects buzzing.

From here, you can see the far side of the canyon. It seems that water spills into the canyon from that side as well.

Forim continues looking and is about to say Mam, I suggest we climb down and replenish our resources. however just as he takes a breath and opens his mouth to speak he remembers that he is the one in charge.

Re-centered he says "Yes.  Lets climb down and find a spot to set up camp.  Refill our supplies and then make for that odd looking mountain to the south.  We follow the river south so we don't have to worry about water.  We go down in pairs.  I will go with Anders.  Zeik you are helping with Roger.  Xyklo, you are overwatch and then join us down there and we will cover you.  Once we are down there, lets find a spot to spend the night.  Maybe improvise a liter or something that can be pulled by the speeder.

Any other objections?
"

As Anders and Forim climb down the cliff, forim slips often.  Fortuatly they got most of the way down before Anders' grip failed and the fell the rest of the way to the ground.

Xyklo nods.
”Yes Captain,”

After filling his canteen and rinsing the grit and dust from his carahide he set up his gear as Forim and Anders were about to start their descent.
”Captain, do you mind if I try to ride down with the speeder? Only it’s carrying the spare kit, and should one of us get injured...   well, I’d not like to dump it till we have to.”
He lines the heavy blaster rifle up next to his old APC, at least if they ran into trouble and the shoddy batch of power cells knocked one weapon out, he’d have another to hand. Dropping down to one knee, he tracked the sights of the rifle along the far side of the canyon, then once along the valley floor.

As Forim thought about the request he said "Flight Officer" automatically without thinking.

Eventually he said "Well, We have to bring it up the other side, which would be quite the chore.  How long would it take you to ride it solo around the canyon and leave it on the other side?  Then you can climb down that side leaving a synth-rope for us to climb up as well.  We can meet you near the river with the camp fully setup.  We can pick the spot now so you know where we will be."

And he begins to gather his gear and stow it on the rear of the speeder once more.

Re: M4 WG: Harsh Climates

The flight ceiling of the speeder bike does not allow it to soar over canyons, nor is it designed for near-vertical climbing. The only way to hang on to it is to bring it around the canyon. So Xyklo races ahead, the speed of the bike making up for the vast extra distance to travel.

Meanwhile, the rest of the rebels head down. The rocks are slippery with dew and moss, and are often loose in the wall. A few falls are arrested only by the Rebels' use of rope, tying themselves to one another. The worst occurrence is when Forim lowers himself into a net of sticky strands set up by some tiny predator and gets covered in web.

Descending the last dozen feet is like sinking into a steaming cauldron. The damp heat and the misty air make it a minor act of courage to finish the climb. As you descend into the mist, Xyklo loses sight of you from the opposite side of the canyon. You hit the ground with a squelch. The vegetation here is thick and wet. Birdsong and insect chirping echoes weirdly in the canyon walls, mingling with the sound of burbling water and creaking of trees.
