M4 WG: The Tree

The elevator finally reaches its destination with a jolting thud. Your host pulls the lever and begins working the crank again. The door opens.

You enter a short hallway with another metal door. Your host leads you to the door, double-checking that you are wearing your blindfolds and reminding you to put them in place with gestures. When you put it on, you can still mostly see through it, but your vision is muted by the cloth.

Your host opens the door using a lever. It slides open, and your vision is assaulted by a bright gleaming light. You involuntarily shield your eyes, and suddenly the blindfold doesn't seem good enough. Even your host, expecting this, is shielding his face.

Eventually, your eyes adjust enough to get a good look inside. The ceiling, high up above, is what is so bright. It gleams white, so brightly that for a moment you think you have come outside again. There are four sloping walls, as though you are inside a tremendous pyramid.

Some way in, you see a darker area. Your eyes are grateful to have something other than brilliant white to look at. It's hard to make out due to the brightness, but you think you can make out the dimensions. It's at least twenty meters tall, and is broad enough that it shades a twenty- or thirty-meter radius beneath it.

Your host gently takes Forim's arm and begins to lead you towards it.

Anders was sure the spots before his eyes were going to be permanent and the headache would be a long one. Either way it looked as if they had made it to the right place and he was relatively in one piece so win win.

When the time came he follows their host when he begins to move.

M4 WG: The Tree

Your host leads you towards the shady area and you see that it is, indeed, a tremendous tree. Not nearly as tall as the mighty bastions of Kashyyyk, but still impressive in that a tree of this size is growing, apparently, inside a mountain. The tree's leaves are vibrant green. The tree's trunk and boughs are a dark, healthy brown.

The ground is a soft, loamy earth that is neither wet nor dry. This makes a pleasant change from the wetlands and badlands you have been walking through for days.

You pass under the boughs and the leafy canopy provides shade. Your eyes ease a bit from the bright light they have been straining under. Once they have adjusted, you see another person. It is an older man of the same species as the Aki-Varshi. He slowly stands up from his seat by the mighty trunk. He walks towards you, his robes swishing as he moves. He is wearing a bandage around his eyes too, but it appears to be holding in place a much thicker cloth over his eyes. You are fairly sure that you wouldn't be able to see through the blindfold he is wearing. Nevertheless, he approaches you steadily.

The man reaches Forim and stops. He reaches up with his right hand and gently places it on the side of Forim's head. For a few moments, Forim's large eyes seem to dilate.

Suddenly you are far away, in a place you can barely remember. Your hands and feet move randomly, without your guidance, as an enormous Duro leans down towards you. She babbles some strange noises that you are unable to parse. She smiles and touches you kindly, and keeps babbling. You try to imitate the babble, and she coos in delight.

The scene changes, and you find yourself in a much more familiar place. It is the creche of a starship, where you played and learned with other children. You all sing songs together, ancient nursery rhymes of your people.

You are seated in a classroom. On your desk are books, paper, and a stylus. All around you, youths carefully scratch their letters. They copy out words they do not know from their reading, then look the words up to increase their vocabulary.

You are seated at the dinner table on your first starship. Your crewmates laugh and talk, telling stories and jokes. They switch between Durese and Basic freely as they casually chat.

The man withdraws his hand. "Thank you for sharing your memories with me," he says in Basic.

"You must have many questions," says Jevery as he folds his hands into his sleeves.

Jevery, his eyes still concealed by his thick eye-bandage, smiles. He points up at one of the tree's many, many branches. "Look among the branches. You see leaves, yes? Do you also see the fruits?"

As it happens, you do. Nestled in the crook of a branch, you see a brown, fist-sized fruit. Now that you know what you are looking for, you can see several more growing.

"This tree is a special tree. It does not lightly drop its fruit. Throughout its life, it provides them only to..." he pauses.

A fruit drops down out of the tree and lands in front of Anders with a quiet thud.

Jevery bends down, picks up the fruit, and hands it to Anders. "It seems you have been selected for a great honour."

Now that you get a closer look at the fruit, you can see a few more details. It is hard, and has a sort of seam down the middle.

Jevery reaches out with his own hands. He takes Anders' hands in his own and wraps them around the fruit's hard skin. They pull together, and the fruit comes open with a snap.

Inside is a glittering crystal.

"This is your blessing. The Tree has seen your heart, and has read your destiny. With this fruit..." he pauses at another soft 'thud.'

Forim looks down. Another fruit has landed on the ground in front of him.

"My goodness," says Jevery. Vies also makes a sound of soft surprise.

"Ahem. As I was saying, the fruits are the means to the blessings of the Tree. Once in a great while, the Tree chooses to bestow one on a worthy individual. When you met Master Warden Lum, did he show you his crystal? He chose to fashion his blessing into a device. Now he uses it to keep our lands safe."

Jevery coughs. "When I received mine, I brewed it in a pot of tea. After I drank, I received a powerful awakening. Now I have a second sight. It renders my living eyes unnecessary for most things." He gently tugs on his blindfold.

Xyklo stares around in surprise and bewilderment. He notes the emotions on Forims face. This was clearly a power beyond that which he understood, something far greater than he, or Forim, or any of them.

"We can't let the Empire get to this...   tree." the word tree didn't do it justice, but he didn't have a better word.
He knew for certain that the woman out there somewhere must be stopped from finding it.
His tired legs finally gave out, Xyklo sat down with a bump.

"The Force, yes, we have heard this term before. Many years ago, scholars from a group called 'The Republic' came to study the Tree. They passed the tests and asked many questions. They said that the 'Jedi Knights' would be very interested in their findings. The Custodian of the time had a blessing and let them inspect it. They claimed it was something called a 'catalyst,' and would be very powerful in a machine."

"They have been present on our world for some years. The Aki-Varshi observed them as they set up their camp. At first we were concerned that they meant to attack the mountain and seek the Tree, but they had their own designs. They created a kind of prison here, bringing others from off-world to keep them incarcerated in buildings in the great marshlands to the south. Why they would do any of this is beyond me. In any case, they kept to themselves for most of the time, unaware of our tribes."

"Now, it seems that they have come in pursuit of you. You came for the Tree, yes? Tell me, do they know of your quest?" He asks this last question in a tone of casual curiosity.

"I'm afraid I cannot tell you much. The Master Warden will know more than I. When you see the Aki-Varshi again on your way out, ask him to tell you about the prison. I think he may be more helpful to you if you tell him you are trying to get off-world."

Zeic takes the crystal-fruit into his mouth. It is much too hard to chew, but just as he is about to take it out again, he feels strange.

You are surrounded by countless millions of bright lights. They glow, and move, and pulse, and some are slowly splitting into two. It's dizzying.

Then you realize that the lights you saw are combined into larger forms, themselves the sources of more light. These towering, mighty glow-forms fill your vision as you look at them.

You look around and see more lights. Lights so large, so immense, that they contain entire ecosystems of lights within them. They move of their own accord, like titans among insects.

Then, at last, you see a light so great that it fills the entire world. It towers above you, covering the sky with bright, brilliant light.

The rest of the team watches Zeic taking an eye-watering interest in the soil, insects, tiny plants, themselves, and finally the tree. The Custodian smiles indulgently.

Zeic feels the 'fruit' in his hands. It seems to have lost a lot of its energy. Now it seems to be a simple crystal, of little significance except as a memento.

Jevery does not seem to be satisfied. "From what I understand, both you and these others seem to consider yourselves heirs to the Republic. We knew the Republic as scholarly and peaceful when last they visited. They were not prone to destroying forests or capturing villages. However, if you are the true heirs, why did you not know of the Tree? Was the knowledge the scholars discovered lost?"

After a moment more thought, distress creases his face.
”We need to stop that woman, the Imperial one. She might be able to find the tree,” he was buzzing with life. It was almost as if he could reach the collective hive mind of all life. It gave him energy, fluid and electric. Not the adrenal panic he was used to but a more relaxed vibrancy.

Even if they cannot, they will never find the entry point without the Master Warden's help. If they were to enter, I doubt they could pass the challenges that you did. They surely lack compassion, faith, and wisdom."

When Forim asks for information, he frowns. "We do have a record of information, but it is not the sort of thing you can take back with you. Attend me." He begins to walk, blindfolded or not, across the room. Reluctantly, you follow across the bright landscape.

Jevery leads you to the edge of the pyramid. He indicates a short vertical wall that seems to run around the interior of the structure. Through your blindfolds, you can make out that it is decorated. Carvings are etched into the wall, like hieroglyphics.

"I am sure you do not understand our written language, but I will translate. See here," he points at an arcane collection of glyphs. "This is where the visit of the Republic scholars is codified. They were peaceful but wise, and earned their own entry. They took many notes on the Tree, which our Custodian at the time chose to share. Much was made of giving this information to their 'Jedi,' and we were assured that they would return. Alas, they did not."

He points to another bit. "Perhaps you are wondering about a more direct assault on the Tree. Do not be concerned. The mountain is capable of protecting itself. See here? At our invitation, the Republic vessel fired its sky-weapons at the crystal peak. No harm was done!" He concludes triumphantly.

M4 WG: The Tree

The food turns out to be a nourishing nut paste and fresh fruit, with a meat & vegetable stew. You are served fruit juice, cold water, and a hot drink not unlike caf.

A pleasant night passes, warm and dry and on soft earth. While you are settling down, you review your datapads with the mission objectives.

Primary Objective:
 - Tech-Procurement: Locate the 'Tree of Knowledge' or any information related to it.

You feel you can tick this item off.

Secondary Objectives:
 - Combat Victory: Capture at least one high-ranking Imperial officer.
 - Counter-Intelligence: Sequester knowledge of a Rebel team on Karhexadine 1.
 - Intelligence: Obtain intelligence on any Imperial strongholds on the planet.
 - Personnel: Prevent casualties among Rebel agents.
 - Political Support: Obtain resources relevant to the mission from local support.
 - Sabotage: Prevent Imperial broadcasts for support.
 - Space Superiority: Destroy one squadron of Imperial fighters.
 - Support: Fulfill as many objectives as possible.

Of these objectives, you feel that the Space Superiority and Political Support objectives may have been accomplished already. You destroyed several of the TIE fighters assigned to defend the system. The Aki-Varshi seem to have provided you with intelligence and led you to the Tree, where you acquired the 'blessings.' Perhaps the groups you have encountered so far, the Geik and the Aki-Varshi, could be prevailed upon for additional assistance.

You wake up refreshed as the dawn breaks, flooding the Tree's habitat room with bright refracted sunlight.

Fruits and nuts are simply a fine finish to one of the most dramatic days in the Verpines life. He sleeps deeply within dreams of mighty forests, and aquamarine rivers.
On waking there is part of him that believes that dream planet exists somewhere in the galaxy. Maybe one day he will get to be there in person?..
Sitting at the breakfast table, breathing softly Xyklo slips the headphones over his antenna and listens to the soft chords of a Geonosian string band. He did this for ten minutes, until others awoke. When Forim appears he smiles and removes his music.
”Captain. I was thinking, I’m not sure it’s good enough to completely assume the tree is safe. If they find out about it they can blockade the system, or possibly destroy the planet from beneath its roots.
We shouldn’t allow this to happen sir...   sorry sir, I meant that I don’t think we should allow it to happen.”
he briefly looks down, embarrassed.
”If we need a vehicle, could we not capture an Imperial one, possibly even an officer, or some way of learning how much they know? Then we could leave a false trail, make them think we came for some other reasons, or just found the tree dead?”

He looked hopefully at Forim. Xyklo hadn’t stated which officer he wanted to capture, but Forim could probably guess by now. That woman’s face, and the ship she rode in, were almost imprinted on the back of his faceted eyes.

Forim sits down with a thud and starts having some breakfast.  His skin normally a vibrant blue now more of a dull sky blue.  His movements are slower than usual and his reactions seem to be normal, which is to say WAY slower than his pilots reflexes.

Then looking to Zeic he says "I agree.  We might even want to consider a contingency plan to prevent the possibility of capture.

But we should better prepare an ambush point.  And if something doesn't go to plan, we retreat instead of pushing through with the plan instead.
"

Forim says in a much different rehearsed tone "He who learns to run away, lives to fight another day" as if he had said it many times before.

The Verpine nods his understanding, it certainly wasn't for him to question Forims orders. The Ca-Flight Officer was far smarter than he, and Zeic looked like a veteran too.
"Sir, I might suggest we need to scout south and identify any Imperial bases here. Then you could better make a decision on how best to do this, right? Like we can see if any vessels are more easily exposed to a raid, or if they conduct any kind of routine on transport?
Have to say sir, I'd prefer jumping a well armed base than setting a bait for an Imp response,"

Xyklo sees his plate empty bar a few juices. He slurps them with his snout, then looks down, ashamed.

After getting themselves sorted out with rest, breakfast, and questions, the Rebels of Alpha Team set out. The mission's primary objective has been accomplished, and now all that remains is to get off-planet and out of the system.

With the assistance of Vies, the Guardian, you make your way out. He cannot speak your language so it's a long walk with little conversation. The path he leads you on involves an elevator and a conveyor belt, and then a long tunnel that eventually leads you out of the mountain.

It is just before noon. The sun is shining, and bright white puffy clouds are in evidence. There is a column of smoke rising from a forest, near the one you used for cover during your escape.

Vies mimes some instructions to you. He points down to a nearby flat area. He says, "Lum, Aki-Varshi," and some other things you don't understand, but points back at the flat area of rocks.

You reach the flattened area and wait. You are there for awhile, starting to feel a little exposed and impatient. You scan the horizon, looking for Imperial troops.

After an hour, you hear a strange chirping that turns into a whistle. One of the aki-varshi pokes their head up over a ridge. He glances around and then waves. Moments later a group of them come over the rise, and approach. Lum, the Master Warden, is with them.

"Greetings again," he says in the Geik language. "I see that you should be congratulated." He twiddles his own crystal and points to yours, each in turn.

Lum gathers some sand on the flat rocks. He carefully flattens it, so as to create a smooth surface. Then he uses his knife's point to begin drawing sketches. He draws a series of maps for you to examine.

"We have scouted the prison and its buildings, to be prepared if the Empire's soldiers begin to cause trouble. I believe this knowledge will be of use to you."

He sketches a map of the southern territory. "There is a ridge, and then the land becomes wet and swampy in most places. They chose a foolish place to build their buildings; over time, the land has reclaimed much of it, and still they live there.

"There are three structures. This one, the most southern, is where most of the prisoners are kept. There are about a hundred now. It is also where the ship lands. You can see that most of the flattened rock-surface has been reclaimed by the swamp."

Lum draws another map. "This is where the prison guards live. It is much better kept, but as you can see there is a forest nearby. They keep vehicles there, including large walking beast-vehicles, that go about on two legs."

https://postimg.cc/image/p68uan4ol/

"It is this island here that I believe concerns you most." Lum draws a final map. "This is where the weapon that is supposed to attack enemy star-ships is. They test it from time to time; the light reaches the stars."

Prisoners -- 50
 Guards & Soldiers -- 40
 Technical Staff -- 20

Lum borrows your own map of the southern territory. "You see the south-most facility, where the prisoners are housed? The swamp has taken it in half. Now the guards make the prisoners work all day to try and drive out the water and raise the ground. They also take prisoners out of their facility to other facilities, to do work there. I believe they give them extra food or other rewards to make them work harder."

Our secrecy from them on this world has been our protection. If they learn of us, they may choose to attack. I would prefer to aid from the shadows, rather than drawing attention."

"The base has these towers," Lum says as he points. "They have bright lights that they point around to search for trouble. They can only be aimed outside. Each of these buildings also has electric lights on them. The compound is fairly well lit where it is bright, but there are large portions of darkness. M4 WG: The Tree

“But...  of course we should try sir!

We have to, don’t we?”

Forim shakes his head and says "we don't have to, no.  It's not our mission.  And it could jeapordize our primary mission...

It's a choice I have to make, if those prisoners are freed and brought off planet, freed from prison but not rescued and then probably killed by Imperials as a distraction, or we get them off plant.

All of their lives, and yours, are on my shoulders."

Lum the Master Warden coughs politely. "Would you like us to guide you south, to one of the bases? It should be easy enough to get to the base with the star-weapon, or the machine-beasts."

Using the simple language of the Geik is placing a real cramp on his vocabulary.

In reply to The Force (msg # 97):

"Yes, I think we need to have a look for ourselves." Anders got ready to move out and follow the locals.

Xyklo grabs his assorted kit, but when it comes to the selection of guns he pauses. The Barons rifle he takes a long look at, before removing its clip and throwing the weapon back down. Taking up his old ACP he rejoins the others.

The Verpine bounces gently on his feet, very eager to get to grips with the target.

With that, Lum nods and barks out orders. Within moments, the Aki-Varshi are ready to go. They head down the mountain into the marsh. They loosely surround you, much further out than when they were treating you as prisoners. Now it feels more like an honour-guard. A few are out on the periphery, keeping an eye out for dangers in all directions.

Lum stays close to you. He leads you by a path of thick-grown vegetation that serves as a sort of path through the marsh. This prevents you from having to get too wet above your feet.

You near the mouth of the marsh, an area of fens fed by a river. At this point it is impossible to continue on foot. The Aki-Varshi have foreseen this. Some of them, who must have run ahead earlier without your notice, have cut loose hummocks of vegetation that float on the water. They serve as rafts for you and your escorts.

Hours of poling and paddling lead you across the river at its slowest, widest point. You are once again in the foothills of the mountain. The Aki-Varshi lead you on a fairly flat, winding route. It is dark by now, and the less nocturnal of you have a hard time avoiding stumbling on rocks. You try to avoid complaining, which gets easier when you hear the artillery.

Off to the south-west, you hear powerful laser fire and explosions. Distantly, you can see a fire gradually growing. It would seem that the Imperials pursuing you have not given up. They have picked another forest to destroy in an effort to pick up your trail or kill you.

Finally, in the wee hours of the morning, you cross a short distance over a plain and end up in a forest. It is a forest of high, tall trees and little ground vegetation. Lum declares that this is your resting spot for the night. You gratefully lie down on a bed of fallen leaves and needles, soft and aromatic. The Aki-Varshi form a circle around you to take their own repose.

You are drifting off to sleep as you see Lum taking one final look around with his life-form-detecting lens.

Forim nods when the camp site is picked.  He looks like he is about to give orders as he slumps to the ground, but it only comes out as a mumble as he passes out slowly sliding down the tree to lie next to it on the ground, fast asleep.

He does not wake until morning, not even for food.

ooc: unless someone makes a concerted effort to wake him.  I.E. shaking him or something.  just gently moving him or calling out his name wont wake him up.

M4 WG: The Tree

It could just be the return to sleeping wild in the undergrowth, with imperial forces nearby, but Xyklo’s dreams entered the dark nightmares of the year before he joined the rebellion.
Sleeping during the dawn hours and sliding through swamp strewn jungles at dusk. Murder and sabotage yielding temporary relief from the hatred and frustration that fuelled him. To survive. To fight back.

Only this time it was different. As he crawled over a thick tree root and slid into the thick green mulch on the other side he was aware. Of the tree, patient, passive, tolerant, peaceful. Of the three large grubs in a chunk of rotten wood floating next to him, industrious, vibrant and hopeful.
A bird sung overhead. Had he never before been sensitive to the raw lust held in that song?

Two white figures in the distance.

Guns at their hips.

A shudder of primordial rage shook him, his mind spun, fingers digging deep into the soft earth.
His antenna dropped flat against his skull.

No!
This was not the way, at least...   it wasn’t his way.
