Mission 1: Red Jester

After training is complete, the Boss gathers them around a ship that arrived the previous night.

"This is the... wait, what does that say. Okay, it's the Sunset Shimmer. Like it? Too bad, it's yours now. I don't know anything else about your mission. Hopefully I'll see you again, but it's a big galaxy. Good luck on all your future endeavours. Little present I left you in the mess hall."

With that, he strolls away as you get on the ship.

Some minutes later while devouring the home-made Corellian Chili, you are seated on board the beat-up old freighter and watching a holovideo. A human woman with short blonde hair is speaking to you.

"For your first mission you'll be headed to Tattoine. We've received intelligence that the crime lord Jabba the Hutt is handling a shipment of cargo. Your mission objectives are as follows.

"Discover which ship arriving at Mos Espa is carrying the cargo, or where it will be stored once it has arrived. Once you know the location of the cargo, seize it and prepare to transport it.

"You have two options for this. First, if you can get it off-planet yourselves, fine. The other option is to take advantage of a small group of sympathetic moisture farmers. They will find a safehouse for you if there isn't too much heat on it.

"Secondary objectives of this mission are as follows.
Ideally Jabba never gets wind of this operation before it has been completed. Prevent any alarming reports from being sent.
Find out what the cargo is before you attempt to seize it, and inform us. If you can comm your local contact before you begin, they'll send us a prelim report.
Locate and seize any additional resources you can. Jabba's a gangster, just as much of an enemy as the Empire is. If you hurt him, don't feel guilty.

"Your local contact is a moisture farmer named Cole Urvel. He's either at his farm outside the city or at a canteen called Bkessh."

Included are maps of Mos Espa and the surrounding area.

You take off, and set a course for Tatooine.

Sawalim sits in the ship mess, enjoying a respite after the intense activity of training. She is a bit stunned that they have so quickly been sent, unsupervised, on a mission that could prove catastrophic if it were to be botched.

She says aloud, "I'm no fan of Hutts, but stealing anything from one of the premier Hutt clans seems overly aggressive for a fledgling Rebellion. If the Desiljics find out the Rebellion was behind it, they might be spurred to aiding the Empire against us." She shrugs helplessly. "The Hutts are no friends to the Empire, so why piss off a potential ally? Or is there something about Jabba that I don't know?"

Forim cannot help but sigh in relief at the recycled air of the ship, sublight engines humming soothingly... well mostly soothingly.  Forim will have to take a look at them before the Jawa goes and jury rigs the life support to the main engines or something silly like that.

Forim shrugs at Sawalim and says "As for the motivations of the mission, they are Need to Know.  And I am sure we don't need to know.  In my mind, the Gangsters, Slavers and Thieves will never be allies to the Rebellion.  We might hate the Empire, but if we are going to be honest with ourselves, they will hate us just as much when we win.  No skin of my nose crossing the Hutts."

He ponders it for a moment and says "I would like to try to get the supplies off planet ourselves.  If we can't fit it all on our ship, we can leave some behind and pull the attention away from our contact by taking the bulk of it ourselves.  Once we change the transponder there won't be too much the Hutts will be able to do."

Maybe he was over-confident, but it seemed like an easy enough mission.

The ship arrives in the Arkanis system. As you come out of the lightspeed, your ship automatically reports sensor contacts.

There are a few smaller ships in-system. They look like private shipping; nothing over a hundred tons. This system is well-known as a sleepy backwater, off the major transport routes.

Then the sensors beep a warning. On the outskirts of the system, near deep space, was a capital ship. More information will require a detailed scan by a skilled operator.

You register your arrival with a decidedly disinterested planetside traffic controller. She only wants to know if you're headed to Mos Eisley. When you say 'no,' she curtly grants you permission to land and signs off.

On their way to the mission Forim puts the ship through its paces at the various jump points.  High-stress manoeuvres and quick jinks and jukes.  He also spends some time in the engineering department getting familiar with all the things that are most likely to explode.  He isint happy, but it'll probably hold together.

He brings the ship down with practiced ease.  He says "Thank you for flying Air Luk.  Please be careful when fetching your gear from the overhead compartments as items may have shifted during flight.  Temperature is a cool 40 degrees Celcius."

Mos Espa doesn't have a dedicated landing field for spaceships. There is a cleared area that visiting ships can share with speeders. It is surrounded by a thirty-foot wall designed to block the worst of a sandstorm. Alternately, you can land on the outskirts of town.

Ikki was mopey through the whole trip to Tatooine, having just been on a Ship for so long. He had hoped to stay planetside for a little longer. Alas he was once again place on a ship and kicked through the vacuum of space. Spending the majority of the trip looking over his equipment, checking his rifle or ropes and sat in the cockpit staring out of the viewing window or at the map to see if he could somehow speed it up through willpower.

Ikki's opinion wasn't high of thugs, a few had tried to shake him down. Not many had walked away without an injury or two. Those who had gave him a run for his money were often left in the dust. If he managed to get some Imperial evidence perhaps they could blame the whole thing on the Empire but Counter-Intel was his job. He could get done easily.

As they came into view of Mos Espa, he hung back in the cockpit watching the arid planet go by. Better than space but not by much. "Where are we gonna land? Inside or Out?" He asked the team on their opinion.

Sawalim attempt to scan the vessel in orbit with the sensor array, and she attempts to do it surreptitiously. After a few exploratory attempts, it becomes clear that there's no way to mask the attempt; she doesn't get any useful readouts of the ship, and gets a bit stressed out doing it. However, some other useful bit of information streams in...

In regards to landing, Sawalim ponders for a moment. "I think, if we land outside, we can't have the doors shut on us if the theft is noticed. We'll probably be first on any list of suspects, sure, but they won't have any hard stop to an escape. I doubt anybody will pay much attention to us either way."

For the Computers scan, got 1 failure, 1 threat (strain), and 1 triumph, which I'm throwing into your court. I obviously didn't succeed in scanning the ship, but maybe I picked up something else?

Sawalim detects a counter-scan triggered by her sensor sweep. She manages to shut down her own scan before it is detected. Probably the Imp capital ship didn't detect her.

Reviewing the sensor logs on the way down to the planet, she can see at least some starfighter activity around the ship. This rules out certain classes of vessel, such as the Carrack-class cruiser.

The landing field is privately owned by a rodian named Etsnu. He arrives at your ship as you open the landing ramp.

, he recites in his buzzing voice.

The landing field is not exclusive to starships. You can see two Skyhoppers and an airspeeder on the field, as well as an old G9 Rigger that looks as though it's been there for months. A tall wind-wall surrounds the field, protecting it from most of the desert winds.

The rodian buzzes, clicks, hums, and then nods. He accepts the proferred credits, makes a note on a pad, and walks away.

You enter the sleepy town of Mos Espa. A wide variety of different people are here. Were you less diverse yourselves you might stand out. Scrounge finds the desert air agreeably familiar, while Sawalim finds her large eyes being stung by blowing sand.

Some might assume ithorians would find a desert stressful, lacking as they do in substantial plant life. However Sawalim knows that a desert can be a healthy ecosystem as well. The plants that do live here are small but hardy. A polluted landscape is far more noxious to her than a naturally-formed desert.

Nevertheless, it is awfully hot.

Most of the buildings are squat, square things with windows covered by cloth or coloured glass. One building, a general store, is made mostly from plasteel. Down the street you can see the cantina, situated conveniently to the landing area.

Over the roofs of the small buildings, several blocks away, you can see a compound. A wall surrounds a large structure. It must be your target.

Ikki shields his eyes from the dual suns with his hands, giving very little in terms off protection but after being on the ship for so long. It was blinding. Looking around there wasn't much to look at but at least he had his feet on the ground and sun on his face. Actually he could do with a little less sun now.

Even swapping out his heavy jacket for a more heavy duster did very little to prevent him from feeling like he was cooking. Looking at his teammates he asked the first question "Where do you wanna start?"

Pointing at the Compound, he speaks up "I'll scout out that area, I won't do anything risky, just using my eyes." He tells them, unless you wanted him to lie or some rough types needing approached. He was more suited to being outside.

Ikki makes his way through the narrow streets, passing through narrow alleys and under canvas awnings. The brief areas of shade make the sun a bit more bearable.

A few blocks over, Ikki finds his destination. The building is the size of a town block. It is surrounded by a thick stone wall about four meters high.

After a quick circuit, Ikki concludes there are two gates in the wall. The one on the East side is wide enough for a groundtruck. Through the metal bars of the gate he can see that the building has a loading bay door on that side of the building. There's a personnel door next to it, as well. One tired-looking Weequay leans against the wall, fanning himself.

The North gate is a bit more ornate. It leads to a set of stairs and a double-door. A Gamorrean and a Gran flank the door, leaning against the wall and sweltering.

Meanwhile, Onyx finds his way to the Cantina. It is recessed into the ground to reduce the temperature of the building. Stepping down the stairs, Onyx enters the dark room.

About a dozen different sentients are present in the room. Most have some sort of drink, and many are eating as well. They sit in ones and twos around the room, their attention on their meals and private conversations.

Mission 1: Red Jester

Ikki chewed his lip as he looked over the compound one more time for a better place to break in from, if they had to. However with both his haste not to catch a eye and the blistering sun he failed to catch any clue where to sneak in from.

Clicking his tongue, he decided to come back another time. He had a basic scout of the area and he didn't want to be a remembered face in the area. Prehaps they could get a truck in there. In fact he didn't even know what they were trying to steal in the first place.

If they were going to steal it, Ikki wanted to secure some evidence of Imperial involvement. The enemy of my enemy wasn't always a friend, but they did make a good scapegoat. With that in mind, he headed off to the Cantina to rejoin the others.

14:21, Today: Ikki Sorlock rolled no successes, 2 advantages using the Star Wars Edge of the Empire with a dice pool of 1P 2A 2D with rolls of 2(P), 7(A), 5(A), 3(D), 1(D).  Skulduggery.

Ikki doesn't immediately spot any weaknesses in the physical layout of the building. It looks quite resilient to direct assault.

He does note that the guards outside don't seem to be wearing any sort of uniform. How do they know who is authorized to enter? Perhaps they simply know one another by sight. Perhaps there is something about Hutt gangsters that might be useful to know.

In the Cantina, Onyx offers a tip to the bartender for a little info. The big Klatoonian pours him a mug of sour, watery ale. He palms the decacred coin and shakes his head despondently.

"Not enough to go around. The moisture farmers can't get enough people, but they don't have any money. Tusken Raiders are attacking farms as close as Goldfield." He jerks his thumb backwards, presumably in the direction of Goldfield.

"Urvel is one of the lucky ones," the bartender reports. He points at a human in a brown robe, seated by himself at a table. "When the attacks got too bad, he sold his farm to Jabba. Even at a tenth of the price, it's worth more than your life is out there."

The bartender goes back to polishing mugs, an endless and thankless task. Onyx suspects that the man has more to offer, but isn't volunteering it. Perhaps a little persuasion would help.

Tokens? A certain type of fist bump?

When the Trandoshan spoke to him, Ikki's face was blank as the language went in one ear and out the other. Clearing his parched throat he politely spoke "Sorry, I can only really speak Basic." Holding up one hand in a gesture of apologizing to help his point across.

"One more thing. I've build a..." with this he leans in and speaks in a hush, "bomb. I packed a bunch of bantha dung around a core of chepatite. One blaster shot should set it off. I don't know what to use it for, but it's ready if you need it."

He sits up. "Anything else you need, I'm happy to help with. I know the local jawa clans pretty well. They'll do anything for credits or junk, except fight."

Ikki rubbed his chin in thought, Sawalim made a good point. However what if they just let them load it on? Hijacking would end up with both a ship and cargo. But ideas would have to come later. Taking all the information, hopefully they could get a bit more. The area was too much of a blind spot.

Sorlock nodded as Sawalim asked to move to a quieter place to talk. "If you could give any jobs in town to me. It gives me an excuse to scout around and it helps you out for helping us." He keeps his voice down still.

The customers of the Cantina are eyeing Sawalim curiously. Cole feels moved to explain.

"There's only one of your people on the whole of Tatooine so far. Most call him Hammerhead. He lives in Mos Eisley, but I met him once. He was scouting for sites to grow his plants, and was trying to secure a water supply."

As Ikki asks about jobs, Cole shakes his head. "There's no work in town. Jabba is buying out all the moisture farms. What he's doing with them I couldn't say, but there's no-one working them anymore. Without any water the town is... uh, drying up." He sips his drink, and speaks low again. "Raiders attacked my farm, just like the others. The authorities blamed Sand People, but I know the difference between a Tuskan and a Rodian in robes."

When asked about a safe place to plan, Cole ponders for a moment. "I split the rent on a storage shed here in town with a friend of mine. If you promise not to steal any of his stuff, I'll loan you the key." He gives you a metal key and draws you a little map of the streets. The storage yard is two streets to the south of Jabba's warehouse.

Sorlock nodded at the agreement "We won't touch anything." when Cole handed the key, Ikki took it and slid it into his Duster's pocket. Since he already scouted the area, he already had a vauge idea where it was.

Ikki nodded the Cole "Thanks. We'll be in touch if we need anything. Probably tomorrow at the latest." The spy already had an idea of what he wanted but he wanted to talk it over with the rest of the team. Ikki made eye contact with Sawalim "Shall we go?" Pretty soon, part of the team has assembled at the storage area. Several rows of sheds stand in a field, surrounded by a fence. You are able to use your key to convince the sleepy security guard that you belong here, and soon you find your way to the shed in question.

It's crowded in here, mostly with parts and tools. Everything here is either broken or partly assembled. You imagine that a skilled mechanic could use these parts to assemble a simple but rugged vaporator, or some other device. On one wall is a collection of plasteel crates.

Pausing at the door, she peering into the half-light, "Hello?"  Relief as she saw a second 'match' which almost certainly confirmed that these were indeed the people she was looking for - though she did wonder what game they were playing together.

Sawalim sweeps a pile away, and offers up a mighty "Hurrah!" She pulls out a blocky silver caselet until its buried cord catches on something deeper in the pile, and a tug frees both the device and the entire front facade of scanners, spanners and miscellany to come crashing as a wave over Sawalim's ankles. She overcompensates on balancing against it, and falls hands-first into trash.

After a groan and several moments, she pushes herself up. "Tatooine is exhausting."

She brings the thing (with stubborn cord trailing behind) back to the others. "This may surprise you, but I have experience with environmental technologies. Vaporators are pretty simple machines, with a single exception introduced after about twenty years of production. See, vaporators have trouble operating in extreme heat - in scorchers here on Tatooine, the chemical process of turning the moisture in the air to liquid can sometimes fail, and that can start to gum up and clog the vaporators, even cause it to start releasing chemical-laced water back into the air as a gas. Farmers used to just rush out and turn them off when it got to hot, but finally a major producer installed these." She holds up the box.

"This thing has heat sensors built into it, and if it gets too hot, well, it's wired between the power core and the chemical release chambers. It just alternates the current; switches it off, basically. Then when it cools, it allows the current back through."

Sawalim bobs her head excitedly. "But, you see, it doesn't care what's on the other side at all. It'll just cut the current and interrupt power cycles. So if we splice it in some place that will heat up when the ship begins to cycle on... Boom. It'll suddenly cut. And there will be no indication why."

That's one success and three threats. I figured I'd take one to strain, then two on requiring some wired installation on site to work, probably five to ten minutes minimum? Sawalim is crap at stealth, so it could make it interesting.

Ikki raised his eyebrow at the smart guy comment, unable to tell if it was a friendly term or snarky comment but soon let it go. Listening to Sawalim's idea on sabotaging the transport ship he nodded along blankly not really understanding any of the real technical side of things. At least he understood the point of it; Attach thing, ship doesn't fly.

Placing a few bits of junk on the crate next to him, making a vague image of the compound, some sort of groundtruck and a ship which kept falling apart much to his annoyance. After the 5th time it fell over, he simply left it. "The Compound is pretty durable against an assault, there are two gates in the wall. The North gate has stairs, double doors and is just generally older. The one on the East side can fit a groundtruck through it and has a loading bay. Jabba's men seem to have a way of know who is who without uniform." Ikki announces his observations to the team, pointing at each point as he talks about it.

"First plan, we infiltrate the compound, open the gates and get out of there. Second plan, steal it during transit between the ship and the compound. My last idea is probably the most gain and the most risk. We let them load it onto the ship.....then we steal the ship." Ikki finished, looking at the others in the room for their 2 credits "But we still don't know alot so I'm open to ideas." Sorlock leaned back against the crate as he waited for the others to speak. That was most he had spoken in the entire time he joined the team.

His natural exuberance resurfaces and he cheerfully watched and listened as the other talked, waiting for an opening.  Chiming in he says to the group, “I agree with Sawalim, stealing the ship is a big risk.  I don’t know about you Ikki, but I’m not looking for credits out of this, just a completed mission.  I don’t think it is worth the risk.  Stealing the crate on the ground seems the best option and the least likely to leave an easy trail for the Hutts enforcers to follow.  I can help with the installation on the ship if you’d like and for someone my size, sneaking aboard should be doable, if we can get into the compound.  We should look at a stealth approach with some distraction at the gate rather than an assault.  We want to leave with as few traces as possible.  Maybe we should look at planting some evidence that a rival Hutt was responsible?  Throw Jabba of the trail?”.  Having said his piece, he leaned back against the wall and fidgeted with a stray bit of wire as the conversation continued.

He shook his head. "Agreed. Stealing a ship is a bad idea. Frontal assault won't work. Stealth and diversionary tactics are better suited, or a hijacking on the way to the transport. Honestly if we knew exactly how what we were grabbing was being housed, we could try and get facsimiles to swap out so they wouldn't know the difference until they opened them later."

He scratched his chin. "I think we need to do more surveillance and scouting to see what else we can dig up on approaches and exits."

The Force says "You are near the forward section of the ship, where most of the ship's operations are conducted. The forward 'saucer' section is where the ship's cockpit, crew quarters, rec area, and passenger space. This area contains the ship's secondary shields, backup hyperdrive, and secondary life support systems. It also contains a set of dorsal & ventral turrets.

You are currently in the much larger back area of the ship. The rear area is connected by a long, spine-like hallway that connects all the areas. It is quite a wide hallway, almost five meters across. The creases in the metal suggest that vehicles bring heavy comestables up along here a lot.
"
