A powerful wizard believed he had created a stable portal to a previously undiscovered plane. upon sending a small group of friends through the portal a few things were discovered.
the first being that the portal was not stable on the other end. the second was that there was something about the plane that drained energy from everything. the wizard in the group found that he lacked the energy to cast the spell. on the up side the group found that mundane verbal and visual communication was able to pass back and forth across the portal.

100 days after the portal was opened the portal vanished without a trace. but it reappeared 300 days after that.

shortly after the portal reappeared, a group of 100 explorers were hired to investigate the plane. Among these were 75 dwarves that headed to the new plane to set up new mines.

before the portal vanished again the explorers reported that the plane was abandoned by an ancient race. based upon the amount of vegetation that has overgrowth that somewhere between 50 thousand to 100 thousand years has passed. they found no information as to why they vanished.

by measuring the time that the portal blinks in and out; an exact 100 day open to 300 day closed cycle was observed.
