Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
OOC: Greater arcane sight shows that H'Rek wears magical armor and a magic ring, and her rope and ball are magical as well as a pair of daggers at her belt.

The weapons radiate adjuration, evocation, illusion and transmutation magic.  The ring and armor radiate all of the schools of magic.

Active spells listed in PM.

Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
H'Rek gives a slight bow to Gegorath, followed by a wave to the audience.  Just before the signal sounds, her smile disappears as she lifts the metal ball off the ground and begins to swing it through the air at the end of the rope, building up momentum.

As the ball spins faster, she begins looping it around herself, allowing for quick changes in the angle of the spin, and the potential angle of attack.  Smoke, and then flame, begins to issue from the ball.

As the signal sounds, she rushes forward, her wings propelling her across the arena.  The rope and ball are spinning at breakneck speed (literally, given a lucky blow) around her now, the flames trailing behind the ball seeming to create momentary shapes around her as she races toward her opponent.

Closing to within 15 feet, H'Rek sends the ball arcing toward her opponent three times in rapid succession, each attack coming from a different angle, but fails to connect each time.  After a second's pause she retreats backward, ending hovering in the air about two-thirds of the distance across the arena from Gegorath.

OOC: Boy, talk about some unlucky rolling.  I assumed that the Exalted Evasion ability from Epic VoP is not overcome by True Seeing, so she would still need to roll the 20% miss chance.  I didn't expect all three attacks to come up as misses due to it though.

H'Rek attacked from 15 feet away, but if you have sufficient reach you can go ahead and make Gegorath's AOOs.

Ok, so, it's Gegorath's turn.  H'Rek is at M-8.  She has a current AC 216, and is easily visible in her current location, thanks to the flaming ball which still spins around her on its rope.

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
i can not retaliate at that range

In an equally astonishing flurry of action solid bolts of energy materialize in Gegoraths hands only to fly at blinding speed to strike the ball and chain. the bolts seem to have a slight ability to seek their target and upon contact the energy discharges destructively doing very real damage.

That Is a beautiful dancing style, Do you do birthday parties? my adoptive uncle would just love you.

I need six more opposing attack rolls from H'Rek as I attempt to sunder her ball and chain weapon

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
OOC: Just to verify, you do have a reach/threaten an area of 15' or more?  Because normally people using ranged weapons don't threaten an area at all.  Likewise, normally when making an AOO you would be limited to attacking with a melee weapon or natural weapon.  It is not clear from your post exactly what weapon/power you are using.

quote:
http://www.d20srd.org/srd/comb...cksOfOpportunity.htm
You threaten all squares into which you can make a melee attack, even when it is not your action. Generally, that means everything in all squares adjacent to your space (including diagonally). An enemy that takes certain actions while in a threatened square provokes an attack of opportunity from you.

Edit: Removed opposed attack rolls.

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
OOC: Since H'Rek is an NPC, I had her character sheet saved as an Excel file (rather than on the site), and I accidentally deleted it last week.  I have rebuilt her, to basically the same, but some of her numbers have changed, including her current AC.  I don't mind either way, but her current AC is 169 based on the re-creation.

The section you quoted for psychic strike explains why it applies even to people immune to crits.  However, that doesn't mean that it would get doubled on a crit against someone otherwise immune to crits.  For someone immune to crits, they still take the psychic strike damage, but since you never score a crit on a person immune to such, the psychic strike damage (and all other damage) doesn't get multiplied when a crit would normally be scored.

We will have to address whether Soulcrusher's effect works on someone immune to crits in the Rules Discussion thread.  H'Rek is immune to negative energy, so it isn't an issue for this fight.

OOC: As noted in the Rules Discussion, the Soulbreaker effect would trigger, regardless of immunity to crits.  However, H'Rek has immunity to gaining negative levels, in addition to being immune to negative energy, so she would still manage to avoid the effect.

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
Moving forward slightly, closing the distance to only 70 feet, H'Rek plays out the rope, increasing the arc of her meteor hammer.  Visible waves of heat radiate from her, and small flames lick upward from her eyes, which appear to be a window not to her soul but to a raging fire (at least, hopefully that's not what her soul looks like).

With a grunt she releases the weapon at her opponent, which flies across the intervening space, leaving a contrail of fire behind it.  Rebounding from Gegorath, it flies back across the arena.  As the ball flies past her, H'Rek grabs onto the end of the rope, giving it a sharp tug which brings it around in an arc before she releases it again at Gegorath.

Five times the meteor hammer races across the space between the two combatants.  As H'Rek catches hold of the rope again, she once more puts the weapon into a series of arcs around her.

OOC: H'Rek got past the miss chance this time, on all five of her attacks.  Results of each attack are below.  Her weapon counts as epic, but is not evil, so I reduced the damage for each attack by 25, for the DR 25/epic and evil.  Each attack also dealt 1d6 fire damage, but I didn't bother rolling for it, since you are immune.

Attack 1: Hits AC 294, deals 255 damage
Attack 2: Hits AC 294, deals 254 damage
Attack 3: Hits AC 299, deals 255 damage
Attack 4: Hits AC 293, deals 254 damage
Attack 5: Hits AC 294, deals 256 damage

As her attacks are deflected and sent back at her twice in a row, H'Rek scowls.  "Well, that's no fun at all.  Fine then."

As she catches hold of the meteor hammer's trailing rope the weapon disappears, leaving her unarmed and unhappy.

OOC: That being the case, a bit of retcon is necessary.  H'Rek is willing to try a second throw after the first is reflected, in case you can only do one per round, but after that she would stop trying.  So, only the first two attacks will take place.

Also, did you mean Reflect Arrows, as opposed to Redirect Arrow?  If so, what is your base ranged attack bonus?  I need to know if the reflected attacks hit or not.

Ah, ok.  Well, it's Gegorath's turn then.  H'Rek's revised actions will stand.  The meteor hammer returns to her after each attack regardless of whether it is reflected or redirected (or whether it's a hit or a miss), so it doesn't make a difference in that regard.

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
it boils down to the following I can throw ANYthing back if it requires a roll to throw it at me, the only exception is anything that exceeds my heavy load.

FEATS
  1. lvl 2
    • deflect arrows
      PHB 93:
      DEFLECT ARROWS [GENERAL]
You can deflect incoming arrows, as well as crossbow bolts, spears,
and other projectile or thrown weapons.
Prerequisites: Dex 13, Improved Unarmed Strike.
Benefit: You must have at least one hand free (holding nothing)
to use this feat. Once per round when you would normally be hit
with a ranged weapon, you may deflect it so that you take no damage
from it. You must be aware of the attack and not flat-footed.
Attempting to deflect a ranged weapon doesn’t count as an action.
Unusually massive ranged weapons, such as boulders hurled by
giants, and ranged attacks generated by spell effects, such as Melf’s
      acid arrow, can’t be deflected.
Special: A monk may select Deflect Arrows as a bonus feat at 2nd
level, even if she does not meet the prerequisites.
A fighter may select Deflect Arrows as one of his fighter bonus
      feats (see page 38).

  2. lvl 3
    • snatch arrows
      PHB 100:
      SNATCH ARROWS [GENERAL]
You are adept at grabbing incoming arrows, as well as crossbow
bolts, spears, and other projectile or thrown weapons.
Prerequisites: Dex 15, Deflect Arrows, Improved Unarmed
      Strike.
Benefit: When using the Deflect Arrows feat (page 93), you may
catch the weapon instead of just deflecting it. Thrown weapons,
such as spears or axes, can immediately be thrown back at the
original attacker (even though it isn’t your turn) or kept for later use.
You must have at least one hand free (holding nothing) to use this
      feat.
Special: A fighter may select Snatch Arrows as one of his fighter
      bonus feats (see page 38).

  3. lvl 36
    • exceptional deflection
      epic players handbook:
      Exceptional Deflection [Epic]
You can deflect any type of ranged attack.
Prerequisites: Dex 21, Wis 19, Deflect Arrows, Improved
      Unarmed Strike.
Benefit: You can deflect any ranged attacks (including
spells that require ranged touch attacks) as if they were
arrows. If deflecting a spell, add the spell level to the DC
      to deflect the attack.
    • infinite deflection
      epic players handbook:
      Infinite Deflection [Epic]
You can deflect an infinite number of projectiles.
Prerequisites: Dex 25, Combat Reflexes, Deflect
      Arrows, Improved Unarmed Strike.
Benefit: You may perform any number of deflections
each round. See the Deflect Arrows feat in the Player's
      Handbook.

  4. lvl 37
    • reflect arrows
      epic players handbook:
      Reflect Arrows [Epic]
You reflect ranged attacks back upon the attacker.
Prerequisites: Dex 25, Deflect Arrows, Improved
      Unarmed Strike.
Benefit: When you deflect an arrow or other ranged
attack, the attack is reflected back upon the attacker at
      your base ranged attack bonus.

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
OOC: That is all fine.  The confusing part was that you listed Redirect Arrow, rather than Reflect Arrow, so I didn't know what ability you were talking about.  Assuming you had meant Reflect Arrow, I then assumed that meant you were Reflecting the missile, since otherwise there was no reason to include that feat in the list you posted.

It would be easier if you posted a description of what is happening, so it is clear what action you are taking.

Either way though, it's now Gegorath's turn.

Let me guess, you are going to attempt another ranged or area attack next.

I would not recomend it unless you like the same frustration as you have so far endured.

The other option is, You could some how GROW some courage and come within my arms reach, unless you are too busy shaking like a leaf; every pun intended.

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
Smiling, H'Rek says, "Funny, I thought I was doing you a favor.  But, if you want me close..."

The air shifts as H'Rek disappears from her current position and reappears just in front of Gegorath.  "Here I am."

H'Rek's hands are no longer empty.  She holds a kama in each hand, which indicates to those in the know that she stopped time again, as opposed to simply teleporting across the distance.  Of course, that bit of esoterica makes little difference in the moment, as H'Rek unleashes a series of attacks at her opponent.

OOC:
Swift action: Temporal acceleration (Actions in temporal acceleration include drawing kamas from wherever they were stored, and moving into position in front of Gegorath.  Other actions are unknown, but Greater Arcane Sight does reveal that Schism is now in effect on her as well).

Full-round action: Full attack action, 12 attacks.  Damage listed is pre-DR.
Attack 1: Hits AC 260, for 194 damage
Attack 2: Hits AC 260, for 195 damage
Attack 3: Hits AC 262, for 195 damage
Attack 4: Hits AC 256, for 193 damage
Attack 5: Hits AC 271, crit confirmation hits AC 270, for 196 damage (+194 on a crit)
Attack 6: Hits AC 268, for 196 damage
Attack 7: Auto miss, natural 1
Attack 8: Hits AC 253, for 194 damage
Attack 9: Auto miss, natural 1
Attack 10: Hits AC 270, for 196 damage
Attack 11: Hits AC 262, for 196 damage
Attack 12: Hits AC 269, for 196 damage

OOC: now that i have an answer that i can better understand

Gegorath defensively dismisses his blades his wounds many and are quite visible but he does not appear to be in any real danger of dying (at -145 auto stabilize)

I conceded a well fought and fairly earned victory to my challenger

Gegorath extends his hand to congratulate his opponent.

Re: Tourney: Rd 1: H'Rek v Gegorath
In a blink, H'Rek's weapons disappear to wherever she keeps them when not needed.  Smiling, she shakes hands with Gegorath.

"It was a pleasure.  I look forward to watching your future fights."
