One item I forgot to cover is what Robert and Louis are doing for a living.

After three months as a housewife, Louis' desire for adventure drove her to take a position as an assistant at a private investigation firm called Zane and Elder.

No, not yet. Louis has mentioned that her mother and grandmother didn't have children until they were nearly thirty. Louis is 28 now.

I'd say he would be able to find employment within Her Majesty's government, probably dealing with their naval forces in some way. He's important enough to rate the telephone, so he's probably an assistant to one of the local Admiralty officials, most likely a captain or a commodore.

Well if Robert needs to labor diligently for a few years until Louis hits 30 then that is a burden he will willingly bear :)

If you take the idea that he would be technically on half pay and still holding a commission, then an assistant to one of the naval attaches would make sense.  If you figure we survived the crash and worked our way across a good deal of Mars, our experience would make both of us valuable to the authorities or semi-authorities.  I like that he'd be involved in the government.  It would give him access to information as well that might be of use to us down the road.

The Club

I'm thinking something along those lines - a place where some real movers and shakers meet. Given the diversity of the Martian political landscape, I will rule that the Club isn't exclusive to British subjects, albeit on a *very* selective basis. There are other nations, and even a couple of Martian groups represented among the Club's members.

The Club's watchword is discretion. They don't condone illegal activity, but their definition of illegal may differ from the Governor's upon occasion. Her Majesty's Government views the Explorer's Club as something to be tolerated at most times, and highly useful at other times. The Club is loyal to the respective governments, so spies are turned out whenever they are discovered within the ranks.

The floor is sheet steel, with narrow drain holes pressed though it. The Webley's heavy ball could make it through, but shotgun pellets won't penetrate.

Oh, I mistook your meaning. Claude is a source of information, and someone involved in the plot. Beyond Robert's duty as an officer, and Louis' investigation, I wasn't planning much else with her.

Robert undoubtedly knows many of the officers and NCOs at the base, so there is certainly someone he can trust to keep Ms. Remington secure until the authorities can be notified without getting Robert and Louis arrested.

I was thinking more along the lines of using physical force to torture information out of Claude.  Robert would never do that.

I was thinking along the same lines to hold Claude.  A fellow officer or even a member of the club, a friend would do to keep her on ice.

Check out the new pic for Megilar :-)

Joxe is in exquisite physical condition, so she has plenty of energy. While not clinging to Brent, she loves his touch and closeness as they go about their day.

Megilar likes to be aggressive, but also a little vulnerable, if that makes sense.

Re: Other game stuff

Yes, I enjoyed the pic of Megilar in her new armor quite a bit!!!

I can see both Joxe and Megilar as you describe them.  Neither would be clinging but Joxe does strike me as the more quietly affectionate in public.

Brent certainly wouldn't put on a show but he'd certainly make it clear from subtle touch, looks and tone of voice that he's very attracted to Joxe.  I think as well he would thrive on both her physical closeness and the warmth of her response.  Both of them strike me as somewhat private individuals yet also deeply affectionate.

Megilar's attitude does make sense.  I think she wants to be cherished even as she makes her own way in the world.

Game Background Synopsis

What should they do, based on Bessie's experience?  I would think that the best way would be to make their smuggling operation unprofitable somehow, either by damaging what they're trying to ship or by publicly exposing what they're trying to do.

You know who is behind it, but Gelber has brought diplomatic pressure to bear, somewhat tying the government's hands. You know what port they are using for the smuggling operation, but there is a lot of material moving through it. If the cadre of inspectors can't find the weapons, then the four of you won't add much to that effort.

Robert has access to naval resources, but those are severely strained now that war is all but inevitable. Maude O'Rourke (Em) has little in the way of resources beyond access to personal weapons and the like. The Americans don't have a strong presence on Mars, beyond a small diplomatic mission. Where she could help is to stop the flow of arms at the source (since they are American-made) - but she'd have to know who Gelber's supplier is to accomplish that.

What they do have is investigative experience, and tacit approval to operate outside normal channels. Robert has been given command of your group, and he carries the needed authority to take actions (like executing the kidnappers). Em has some authority, and diplomatic immunity, as an American Secret Service agent. So, you can get fairly aggressive without worrying overmuch about being charged with a crime.

You also have an excellent contact in the Martian canal boat community at Syrtis Major in the Verinus family. Unless the smugglers intend to move the guns over land, they will have to use the canal boats. The Royal Navy's blockade eliminates the option to carry the weapons by air into rebel territory.

Some suggestions:

1. Coordinate with the local navy commander for airship support, transportation or tactical, or both.
2. Prepare your equipment and weapons.
3. Obtain transportation - there are even a few steam-powered canal boats that are much faster than the hand powered versions. They have a rather limited range, though.

Smuggling Operations

Raiding the warehouse first carries the risk of finding few weapons, and alerting the smugglers to the interdict operation.

Waiting until the boats are out on the canals carries the risk of not finding them all. Although, the launch will greatly facilitate the search effort, especially since the family-owned canal boats have distinctive markings.

Of the four canals leading roughly southward, the Oenotria canal (south-southwest) is most heavily patrolled by British forces. The canals leading to Avenel (southwest) and Crocea (southeast) have fewer patrols given the manpower limitations of the Navy and Army. The fourth canal leads to Moeris Lagus (east-southeast), away from Oenotrian territory. so it is only lightly patrolled.

Avenel is the rumored destination for the smugglers, since that city is on the border with Oenotria, and the trip is about half as long as the journey to Crocea.

For one, the canal boats have to follow the canals - which are easily patrolled and blockaded. Also, the local Martian topography is similar to the high plains of Wyoming. There are vast stretches of open land studded with scrub greenery and small copses of trees, but with ancient washes and canyons interspersed among ridges and low hills. Further to the west, there are actual mountains.

They both have sturdy clothing, including boots, a belt, a knife each, hats, scarves, and coats appropriate for the Martian weather.

They have combat rations for seven days (dried meat, dried fruit, tea, hard candy, cheese, crackers), plus another seven days' dry and tinned rations used aboard ship. These rations are heavy, but tastier than the combat rations. A cooking kit, a large two-gallon canteen, two one-quart canteens, two bedrolls, and two army rucksacks round out their equipment.

Robert would need a good compass, a good watch, a chart and a set of tables with star positions and some calculations.  It should work just as well on Mars as on Earth as it is all about the apparent position of the star on the planet and the angle to that star.

We can also do noon sightings and probably some pretty trick sightings of the Martian moons to help find our location.  That said if we have landmarks and a map it's way, way easier...

The gunfire will draw attention so we need to get the heck out of Dodge ASAP.  Not sure if Louis and Robert have provisions to shadow the caravan.  Ideally we might go back, get the airship and follow them from a distance.

Do we have another game here on this site beyond this one, the dead western and Terrible Deaths?  Do you want to do anything with our characters in the western?

Let's say that you have provisions for at least three days travel, and the navy ship will come within signaling distance in two days' time.

There is also the New Eggs Traveller game that I'm running here, with a version of Brent and Joxe.

As for the NM game, the GM has disappeared, so I'm willing to let it drop.

http://www.unseenservant.us/forum/viewforum.php?f=849 - District 268 by Tiglath. This one is very active. My character is Prerna Nayar, a scout/sniper for the newly formed "Slightly Unethical Mercenary Company".

Seriously, I think he would take another player - this is a mercenary company, so you'd probably want to play a combat type. Other than my character's scout/sniper, we don't have any real specialists beyond infantry leaders. Maybe you could consider something like a combat pilot, heavy weapons specialist, or a C3I specialist.

Re: Sniper!

One man's smuggling is another man's legitimate commerce. The act of the Martians in purchasing, possessing, and transporting the rifles isn't illegal under the colonial laws. They are simply delivering them to rebels, which Robert can't really prove, except to say that the Martian leader is a warlord, and lives in an area that's - almost - in open rebellion.

On the other hand, the Martians can't do much if the weapons are confiscated, since the British don't want them to have them, and they are in British territory at the moment. Also, if they allow the humanitarian supplies to go through, then the rebels can't say that the British are cutting their supply lines entirely.

Of course, none of this stops Robert from hauling them in and turning them over to his commander for that worthy soul to worry over. :-) In Robert's experience, field commanders in Her Majesty's Armed Forces have a good deal of latitude, proportionate to the communications distance from their commanding officers. I suppose that's a backwards way of saying he won't catch too many javelins, whatever he decides.

Re: A little downtime

I might have said this before, but I named Louis after a real-life man from the Ohio Valley in what is now West Virginia. His name was Lewis Wetzel, and the natives of the area called him "Deathwind". If you remember the author Zane Grey, his ancestor was a contemporary, and Grey wrote several books recounting their lives back in the early 1800s.

Wetzel's biggest claim to fame was his incredible marksmanship and overall ability as a woodsman and a hunter of men. And, all of this is absolutely true.

Here's the Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spirit_of_the_Border

This says it was a novel, but, if it was, it was based largely on historical events, and on real people. Lew Wetzel's family was murdered by one of the tribes in the area, so that's why he hunted them with such ferocity. It was a tough time, with enough tragedy to go around.

Re: A little downtime

For every five minutes the three of you spend canvassing the area, make a 2d6 roll to find useful information. You have about an hour of daylight remaining, so you can choose how long you wish to search. As with GURPS, lower rolls are better.

Wow, it has been a while since I disappeared.  We never had to face a hurricane while we lived in Pensacola.  One came through a few years after we moved out though.

I did ride out a typhoon in the South China Sea while in the navy.  We weren't in the dangerous semicircle or anything but it was still scary.
