Bessie Womack:
Bessie gives her friend a nice smile. "Yes, of course..." Is it a trick of the lighting, or is there just a little bit of a blush on Bessie's pale cheeks?
Em smiles brightly as Bessie accepts her invitation. They walk to the door, and the rating at the door summons a hansom cab for the pair. The cab ride to the American mission serving Syrtis Major. The building is yet another of the ancient Martian structures, with the first three floors' windows glazed in.
A pair American Marine guard corporals stand at the door, resplendent in their dark blue undress blouse and medium blue pants, and armed with what Bessie recognizes as 1886 Winchester rifles. The guards brace to attention as the ladies approach, and one addresses Em. "Good afternoon, Special Agent O'Rourke."
Em shows her badge to the guard, who glances at it, and goes back to smiling at Em. "Good afternoon, Corporal Huntington. And how is your lovely wife today?"
His smile broadens into a small laugh. "Barbara is nearly ready to deliver, so I get to wait on her hand and foot."
"As a good husband should," Em rejoins as the other corporal opens the door for the ladies. The pair enter the main hallway, and take the stairs to the second floor. The Secret Service office is about halfway down the wide hallway on the right, while Bessie's former office is on the third floor.
Em leads the way into the office, where she is greeted by a dour-looking man seated at the secretary's desk. "Hello, Agent O'Rourke," he says in a gravelly voice.
"Hello, Thomas," Em replies. "Is Daniel available? It's important that I see him right away."
"Of course," Thomas replies as he rises. "I will check with him." He steps over to a door marked "Senior Agent", knocks twice, and then goes through the doorway.
