Lessons from the Past lead to Hidden Depths

Hidden Depths

Aided by your old friend Ashur Sungazer, at Phelar University, you traveled to Koler in the Deep Core and found the ancient wreck of the Sanctuary.  The creaking shattered vessel still held a few dangerous surprises and the dark side of the force lay in the shadows.  A lumbering war droid challenged your growing power but was no match.  Among the remnants of Jedi master Val Isa's defiant stand against the Mandalorians you found a rare holocron.

Excited by the potential locked inside the holocron your smuggler friend returns you to Phelar, on her way to another job, so you may study its secrets.

The holocron is a wealth of information but is not unlimited and the knowledge is several thousand years old.  However it contains a great deal of basic Jedi instruction - including basic lightsaber technique.

You may count Discipline and Medicine as career skills as long as you possess the holocron.

When making a Knowledge (Lore) check to learn about the Jedi, you may use the holocron to make an assisted check.  The holocron counts as having 3 ranks in Knowledge (Lore)

Lessons from the Past lead to Hidden Depths

Weeks quickly pass as you intensely study the holocron and practice its lessons.  You have all the information you need to craft a lightsaber of your own.  The necessary parts for a basic hilt can be found relatively easily.  But a crystal is an entirely different story.  For centuries Ilum was the sole source of crystals for the Jedi order.  Now that planet is fiercely guarded by the Empire and attempts at landing on its surface would be suicide.

One evening you receive a call on your comlink from your scholar friend.  He loathes the Empire for hindering his quest for knowledge but keeps his opinions a secret to everyone but you.

Ashur quickly launches forth without saying hello.

"My friend.  I have some information that may excite you.  A colleague of mine in the Geology department mentioned a planet Phemis in the Corellian sector recently underwent some significant tectonic movement.  He dismissed it as purely academic as Phemis is a backwater planet of little interest except for a number of small mining operations on its surface.  So imagine my surprise when a... well... associate that procures things for me, mentioned a sharp increase in Imperial patrols in that sector."

He speeds from thought to thought never pausing for a moment

"I did a little research and found a law dating back to the Old Republic that forbids the mining of a particular, shall we say special, crystal.  Kyber crystals!" He shouts.

"The properties of these Kyber crystals are very very close to the Ilum crystals you were inquiring about.  Close enough to make mere possession of one a severely punishable offense."

Now you are free to pursue any strategy for obtaining information, transportation, etc.
Describe your characters actions as a narrative and put any other text in red.
Lets see how it works.
Good luck.

The glee is evident in Ahur's voice

"I will set up a call for you with my geology colleague."

Make a Knowledge (Core) check with normal difficulty (2 difficulty die) plus 1 bonus for help from Ashur's colleague.
So the dice pool will be 2 green + 2 purple + 1 blue.

Lessons from the Past lead to Hidden Depths

In reply to Revan Kun (msg # 5):

Ashurs colleague meets you at a tapcaf not far from campus.  He is under the belief that geology is a hobby for you and launches directly into talking about Phemis with little small talk.

Corellian explorers discovered Phemis early in the history of the Old Republic. The records of the planet date back several thousand years and the planet would have likely avoided even the meager attention it received if not for a strange curiosity noticed by the initial surveyors - signs of repeated visitation by unknown offworlders.  This oddity piqued further interest in the planet by commercial and scientific interests hoping to find something of value.  These investigations laid the groundwork for the mines that operate on Phemis to this day.

Phemis is firmly within the habitable zone of its star, and its climate is generally mild.  It has little to offer in the way of flat surfaces for construction, with jutting rocks, deep canyons, and towering mountains covering most of its surface.  Because of these obstacles, the corporations with mining claims to Phemis typically establish their operations inside known cave networks and expand from there, rather than attempting to create new sites.

The only above ground constructions on Phemis are the various loading ports and docks for cargo shuttles used to carry away the ore mined deep beneath them.

Phemis is currently interdicted by Imperial order due to a few small deposits of Kyber crystals.  We can't even get samples of them here at the university.  But if somebody was very... determined to study these crystals then an opportunity has arisen.  The groundquakes on this planet are quite extreme.  A huge fissure has recently opened in the crust and due to increased Imperial presence it is a good bet that Kyber crystals have been exposed.

In reply to Revan Kun (msg # 7):

The geologist pauses and seems to be pondering your question.

I do know where the fissure is located on the planet.  There are only a handful of operations on the planet.  I am not aware of their exact locations but it shouldn't be very hard for you to find out.  I do now that the miners are all well trained in evacuation procedures and would have a fled the planet for a quake of this magnitude.  They probably won't stay away long and may even be returning to normal operations now.

He measures you briefly, seeming to consider if he wants to continue.

Since you are a friend of Ashur I'm sure  you don't bind skirting regulations to get to what you need.  Imperial activity noticeably increased since the quake.  A skilled pilot that knows how to evade Imperial detection could probably get you on planet.  Just make sure they can get you back off.

Feel free to decide on a course of action and roll what you think would be an appropriate skill check in future posts.  You don't have to wait for me to always tell you what to roll. Although I still will at times of course

Also you can add to the story as you see fit.  This sort of play style lends itself to cooperative storytelling.  I will adapt anything you add to my story.

Taking a moment to calm yourself you put one hand on your amulet and reach out to the Force to guide you.  Winding through the crowded city streets you travel farther and farther away from the university.  The people of the city blur around you as you walk.  Soon you are standing in front of a cantina on the outskirts of the city spaceport.  Sublight engines criss cross the sky as ships takeoff and land.

Your eyes adjust to the dim lighting as you enter the cantina.  Loud music fills every corner, perfectly drowning out conversations that don't want to be heard.  Scanning the area you take a deep breath and again tap into the Force.  You move to the back corner of the room and an empty booth.  Just as you wonder if your recent training has failed you a voice right behind you jars your nerves.

We both want to get to Phemis, although I'm guessing for different reasons.  The Empire has given ore rights to a new corp that was just getting operations set up when the quake hit.  This corp will be using slave labor and I'm going to shut it down before it starts.  Help me terminate that corp and I'll get you to the caves you seek.

Have a drink.  I'll be right back

Rolling Streetwise to find a pilot

Dice Roll:

3 successes, 1 triumph, 2 threats on a roll of 1 Ability, 2 Proficiency, 2 Difficulty, 1 Boost

Returning to the table with a grin Mata Hari leans slightly over the table

We are in luck.  A top notch pilot (Due to the Triumph) is heading to that system and has agreed to take us on as passengers.  This guy is no normal freighter jockey and will be good to have on our side if blaster bolts start flying.  The only problem is he's leaving now. No time to scrounge supplies. (Due to the 2 Threats rolled)

In reply to Revan Kun (msg # 12):

A Duros in a blue flight suit is finishing business with a group of Chadra-Fan mechanics as you walk into the hanger.  They squeak noisily counting their credits as they leave.

A ZH-25 Questor light freighter sits in the middle of the hanger.

Greetings new travel companions.  I'm Captain Stazi and departure is imminent.  Please board and prepare yourselves.

The freighter merges smoothly with the rest of the traffic bound for orbit.  It only takes Stazi a few minutes to set the coordinates for the jump to Phemis.

The ship returns to sublight travel and the red rocky planet springs to view.

I have the appropriate mining clearance to enter the atmosphere  Stazi assures you as he busily flicks switches around the cockpit.

The canyon Ashur promised is visible without the aid of sensors, a narrow scar snaking across the planets surface.  However, before you can begin planning your approach, the sensors chime a warning -- several probe droids seem to be hovering along the canyon's length.  You can detect them because they are running constant, active sensor sweeps.  Trying to get past the droids may take some fancy flying, or you can settle for a landing spot away from the canyon and hike in.

In reply to Mata Hari (msg # 15):

Leigh -  suffer 1 strain from the Threat rolled - mental strain I suppose

The southern end of the canyon opens up into a vast, jumbled valley of jagged rock spires that would provide possible cover from the probe droids for long enough to touch down.

Yes, I agree Stazi says
Strap in.

You are pushed back into your seat as the throttles are opened to max and the nose dives towards the ground.  The engines roar as the red surface streaks past - the freighter rolls through giant rock columns.

Do not worry.  The stock Questor is not nimble.  My Questor is not stock.

  • Traveling at max speed of 3 = 3 difficulty dice
  • Ship silhouette of 4 = 2 upgraded difficulty dice
  • Rough terrain = 1 setback die
  • Skilled Jockey talent = -2 setback dice
  • Pilot skill and agility = 3 proficiency and 1 Ability

Dice Roll:

1 success on a roll of 1 Ability, 3 Proficiency, 1 Difficulty, 2 Challenge

Stazi proves his worth and lands his ship among the rock formations without a scratch.

I must insist on comm silence due to the Imp probe droids.  Return here when you are finished with the caves.

You must now climb up the jagged rock spills that issue out of the canyons mouth to make it into the canyon proper.  Make an Average(2) Athletics check with 1(black) setback.  Athletics is a Brawn skill.  So you take the higher of the two values to determine how many Ability dice are added to the skill check dice pool.  Then you upgrade (turn green to yellow) a number of those Ability dice equal to the lower of the two values.

Leigh has an Athletics of 0 and Brawn of 2  -  2 Ability(green) with 0 upgrades
Shaun has an Athletics of 2 and Brawn of 3 - 3 Ability(green) with 2 of them upgraded to Yellow.

Shaun should roll first as he has the greatest chance for success and 3 Advantage can be used to help leigh with her dice roll.

Shauns dice pool is:
  • 2 purple
  • 1 black
  • 2 yellow
  • 1 green

Don't forget that you still have 1 light side Destiny point you can flip.
Flipping a destiny point allows you to upgrade 1 die in the pool or it can be used for "luck" which would allow you to introduce something in your favor to the narrative.

Revan and Mata cautiously walk towards the entrance to the caves.  The canyon is quiet but the walls amplify and echo the sounds of pebbles ticking down from above.  Mata's eyes dart to every sound.

Almost as soon as you cross past the first smashed boulder you hear a low growl from above.  Cresting the canyon ridge is a huge four legged creature nearly 4 meters tall.  Its blocky legs stamp the ground as it looks down at you. A thick ridge of bone curves forward past the flattened face of the beast and horns curl around the sides of its head.  With a great howl it charges down at you both.

You are currently at medium range which is a few dozen meters and towards the edge of the reliable range of a pistol

Revan is the only on that rolled a success.

Order will be Revan - Canyon Charger - Mata

Revan is at medium range which is 2 purple difficulty.
Subtract 1 purple difficulty for the giant size of the Canyon Charger.
Your Ranged Light Skill is 0 and your agility is 3 so 3 green.
Using your maneuver to aim provides 1 blue Boost but you are aiming at a specific part (eye) so that would be 2 black Setback.  I leave that up to you to decide.

1 difficulty
3 ability

The Charger is barreling down on Revan only meters away now.  But the force is a strong ally and Revan cooly aims another shot.  The bolt slams into the center of the chargers head and its front legs fail.  The great beast slides forward into Revan but without thinking he deftly jumps and backflips off the chargers head and lands beside Mata behind the boulder.

The Charge is wounded but you can tell from the scars on its broad head that it is used to conflict.  It stands up and surveys the two intruders.  Looking back and forth between you and the scarred boulder it huffs clouds of dust.  Seemingly satisfied that you are no longer encroaching on his territory he ignores your presence and heads back up the side of the canyon from where it came.

Revan and Mata sneak through the boulder field evading the Canyon Chargers notice.

Due to all the advantages rolled you get extra info:

As you approach the entrance you notice a comm relay  and an imperial probe droid motionless in a heap.  By the battered marks all over it you can tell it had a run in with a canyon charger and didn't survive.

The Imps have gotten here already.  Your crystals are some of the most illegal objects in the galaxy and they don't want them to leave these caves.  If a probe droid spots us it won't take long for the stormtroopers to show up.  I would guess it will take them about an hour at this distance away from the garrison and mining complex.

This droid is too damaged for me to repair it without some spare parts but I can try and access its memory and comm systems

Mata pulls out her datapad and pulls off one of the battered probe droids panels.  After a brief survey of the internals she plugs in a gets to work.

Its a Hard task so 3 purple difficulty.  Her Computer skill gives her 2 yellow proficiency and 1 green ability

Dice Roll:

1 failure, 1 threat on a roll of 1 Ability, 2 Proficiency, 3 Difficulty

After about 15 minutes Mata stands up quickly and yanks the datapad to disconnect it from the droid.

RUN!

She sprints for the cave entrance

I accidently triggered the self destruct! She yells back.

The droid detonates in a bright flash sending rocks high into the air.  The explosion reverberates through the canyon.

You fire up your glow rods and head into the nearest of the three cave openings.  You spend a fair amount of time working through various tunnels, some of which lead to other cave openings.  As you head deeper along a passageway you hear an ominous crack in the cave's ceiling.  Without warning, part of the cavern's roof collapses downwards, throwing jagged rock shards and choking clouds of dust.

Roll an average vigilance check

Falling shards pepper you both as you dive out of the way of the collapse.  Luckily it wasn't a complete cave in and the passageway isn't blocked.

Revan suffers 1 strain and Mata suffers 2 wounds.  The advantages rolled allow you to inspect the collapse and see clues going forward that would show a potential cave in

You feel the force drawing you deeper into the tunnels.  You let it guide your way through the darkness until your path is blocked by layers of shimmering crystalline web from floor to ceiling.

Peering through the mass of strands you see the tunnel turn and a glow coming from around the corner.

I think its safe to say she's assumed you are one of the hidden force sensitives in the galaxy, especially since you are trying to get your hands on a rubat crystal.  Shes a rebel sympathizer so its not a problem.

The bend in the tunnel is only 15 or 20 meters from the webbing.

The force flows through Revan as he reaches out towards the web but instead of bending the strands start to vibrate.  They are not flexible as expected but almost glass like.

If you want to use the force to try and move the webbing or use it to toss rocks at it you will need to roll.  You have a Force Rating of 1 so you can roll one white Force die.

Revan feels the force flowing through the rock and sends it rocketing towards the crystal web.  Shards of glitter rain down and a loud chime echoes down the tunnel.

As the web slowly breaks apart and falls to the passageway floor a blast of dread hits you. Your glowlight fades and darkness surrounds you.  You feel the force vibrating, swirling, around you.

You hear the faint sound of glass cracking behind you.  As you turn around you see your passageway blocked by a web growing into a crystal wall.

From around the corner, you hear a sinister voice.  "Strong in the force but blind to its true power"

Red light spills into the tunnel as you hear a lightsaber rush to life.

A slim, pale, humanoid step out to face you.  Its bald white face is illuminated by his red blade.  Black armor plates on his arms and shoulders are emblazoned with the Imperial insignia.

The force flows through you extinguishing your anger.  The flame turns to a bright wellspring of power and as the pebbles raise to your command the Inquisitor fades before you.  Light returns to the tunnel and a ghostly figure in robes appears.

"These caves are strong with the force and it will test those that are also strong."  The hooded figure looks up at you.

"There is a balance to the force just as there is a balance in you.  Your bravery is balanced by your anger.  The force has tested your desire for the dark side and you have proven true to the light."

Lights of blue, green, and other colors start to sparkle behind the ancient Jedi.  Suddenly the walls of the tunnel fade away and you are standing in the middle of a great cavern.  Crystal formations of all sizes and colors jut from all angles.

"The Inquisitor you were tested against may not have been real but he exists, and more like him.  They will hunt you relentlessly - mad with the power of the dark side and supplied by the Emporer himself."

Mata examines the nearest crystal formation, clearly confused as to why she was walking down a dark tunnel one second and in the middle of a crystal cavern the next.

"The force calls to you and others like you.  Like these crystals, you are all different.  Your bravery and strength will be a constant star that others can follow."

The Jedi motions to the formations around you.

"Meditate and your crystal will be revealed.  Create your lightsaber and leave these caves the warrior the force has called you to be."

Well done passing your test.  You may now choose the color of your crystal and I will flip one of the Destiny points from light to dark to have all the necessary components with you needed to construct your lightsaber.  Pick your color and then we will roll for the construction

Seated on the cavern floor you empty your mind and focus on your breath.  Time passes freely until you open your eyes and find yourself standing before a large cluster of purple rubat crystals that seems to fill your vision.  And yet, despite the size and grandeur of the deposit before you, you realize only a slight ship of crystal is needed.  The inner glow of the rubat deposit seems focused at one point, which seems to sing out to you.  With care and patience, you are able to extract what you need without disturbing the growth of the other crystals.

With shard in hand you arrange the components of the lightsaber out before you.  Then holding the holocron you retrieved from the wreck of the Sanctuary you again fall into meditation.  As you focus on the task, one by one, the pieces rise into the air and find their alignment.

Constructing a lightsaber is either an average mechanic or knowledge(lore) check.  The holocron grants you level 3 Lore so your roll will be 2 purple, 2 yellow, 1 green, and 1 blue boost (since you have the Move force power)

All hilts have 5 hard points.
Choose what type of hilt you want:
Regular
Shoto (Short) like yodas  - gains Accurate 1
Double Bladed - gains Linked 1 and Unwieldy 3
Pike - kind of like the magnagaurds staffs - Cumbersome 3 and Defensive 1

The Rubat Crystal is similar in most respects to the Ilum Crystal.

Base Modifiers:
Installing this crystal changes a lightsabers base damage to 6 and critical rating to 2, and the lightsaber gains Breach 1 and Sunder weapon qualities.
Breach - ignore 1 point of armor for every breach rating
Sunder - target an opponents item to damage - requires 1 advantage to activate

Modification Options:
2 Item Quality (Vicious +1 per) Mods
4 Damage +1 Mods
1 Decrease the weapons crit rating by 1 to a min of 1

Hard Points Required: 2

Other Lightsaber Modifications:

Curved Hilt: Like Dookus - Adds automatic 1 advantage to successful hit when engaged with a single opponent - hard points required 1

Superior Hilt Personalization - Your own customizations to grip etc - Grants Superior Quality - Generates automatic 1 advantage on all checks related to its use and base damage is increased by 1.  hard points required 1

Extended Hilt - Increase damage by 1 - hard points required 1

You get to choose 2 modifications.  1 because you are building it and 1 due to your advantages rolled.

The force leads you quickly out of the cave system.  You feel a renewed sense of strength as you leave this area that is strong in the Light side.

You easily traverse the Canyon chargers territory following paths marked by the scarred boulders.  A few of the great beasts keep a wary eye on you but that is all.

As you approach the ship from around the jutting rock formation that hides if from view, you find an unpleasant surprise waiting for you: Imperial troops, led by a stormtrooper commander.  As the stormtrooper turns towards the sound of your approach, you see the armor on the right side of his arm has been removed to expose a heavily plated cybernetic arm.

The stormtrooper commander turns to face you.

"You pathetic lot are all this ship dropped off?  I thought it was an actual Rebel strike team.  Too bad, I'd hoped to fight some real Jedi.  Don't worry, though.  You'll join their ranks soon enough."  His cybernetic arm twists suddenly, and he draws an oversized vibrosword with a speed you can scarcely follow.  You can feel his bloodlust and hate resonate through the force - negotiation is not an option.

This is a relatively open area near your ship.  Rock formations and treacherous scree covered slopes are scattered through the area.  There is a ledge overlooking a steep drop about 50 meters to your left.

A squad of three cavetroopers is positioned behind the commander about 50 meters to your front.

A second squad of three cavetroopers is guarding the ship about 50 meters to your right.

Cavetroopers are similar to scout troopers - specially trained and outfitted for underground deployment.

As the troopers fall to Revan's blade the Commander attacks with a vicious overhead swing.

Dice Roll:

4 advantages, 3 failures on a roll of 3 Proficiency, 2 Difficulty

Revan barely manages to evade the Commanders attack as the force moves him to defend against the remaining trooper facing him.

The trooper swings with his vibrosword.

Dice Roll:

3 successes on a roll of 3 Ability, 2 Difficulty

Damage 5 + 2 - soak 4 = 3 damage.  You can Parry the attack to reduce the damage to 0 but suffer 3 strain instead if you want.

The squad engaging Mata fires as they advance.

Dice Roll:

1 success, 3 advantages on a roll of 1 Ability, 2 Proficiency, 2 Difficulty, 1 Setback

The assault overwhelms Mata and a carbine bolt knocks her unconscious.

Yes, thats how I have it marked

Revan blocks the troopers attack and then with a quick reversal removes his head.

The Commander tries to catch you off guard with an attack low to your legs.

Dice Roll:

5 advantages, 2 failures on a roll of 3 Proficiency, 2 Difficulty

Revan jumps out of the way but lands awkwardly  The  Commander will gain 1 defense on your next attack.

The second squad of troopers sees Mata go down and turns their attention to Revan.  They pour carbine fire without caution.

Dice Roll:

4 successes, 3 threats on a roll of 1 Ability, 2 Proficiency, 4 Difficulty

Blaster fire rains down on Revan.  The force guides his blade and reflects most of the shots back at the troopers striking two of them.  They crumple to the ground with smoking holes in their armor as the lone trooper presses on.

9 + 3  would be 12 damage to you before soak drops it to 8.  But you can use your Reflect skill to suffer 3 strain to reduce it by 4 and then use the 3 threats rolled to trigger your Improved Reflect skill which sends back the original damage.

You redirected the second squads blaster fire back at them for the original 12 damage.  Each squad had 3 troopers at 5 health each so the 12 damage killed 2 of them.

There is 1 trooper and the Commander left.
Rolling against the trooper would be 2 purple and 3 green.
Rolling against the Commander would be 1 purple 1 red 3 green and a black for the advantages the commander rolled last time.

Revan dodges the last troopers fire and with a sweeping blow he cuts the troopers legs out and lands a final strike across his chest before he hits the ground.

"The last time I faced a Jedi I got a new arm.  You will pay for that now." The Commander growls through his helmet mic.

He slashes with his sword.

Dice Roll:

1 success, 1 advantage on a roll of 3 Proficiency, 2 Difficulty

Commander hits for 6 damage.  You have a soak of 4 so that would end up being 2 damage.  You could reduce that to 0 with a parry but that would bring you to your strain threshold.

Revan rolls off the Commanders strike and brings his forward blade in an upward arc gouging a deep wound across his chest.  The force of the blow opens the Commanders defenses.  Revan takes advantage of this opening to twist and land a second strike.

8 base damage + 1 for the second success.  Your lightsabers breach quality ignores the Commanders armor.

You rolled two advantages so you can trigger you Linked ability to land a second strike for another 9 damage.

18 total kills the Commander

Revan plunges the lightsaber straight through the Commanders chest.  He slumps lifeless with his armor still smoldering.

Revan carries Mata onto the ship.  The captain is restrained in the common area and seems shocked to see you.

I was not expected you to prevail against those numbers.  Hurry, reinforcements will be on the way already.  Free me and I will find a new place to hide the ship.  We can't leave the system until we are certain they haven't deployed Star Destroyer screens.  You tend to her wounds.

The engines quickly climb to power as Revan works with the medkit and stimpacks at the small med station which is little more than a recessed seat in the wall.

Mata recovers 2 strain from you medpack check.  I'll also let you use a stimpack which is an auto 5 health recovery.  That will bring her back to consciousness.

Mata grimaces as she tries to sit up, still clearly in pain.

This changes the plan a bit.  I'm used to sneaking through back doors not being gunned down by squads of storm troopers.
I'm not going to be able to place the charges as I had intended.  Instead, you will need to get inside the mining facility.  I can upload a virus to a datapad that you can use to overload the facilities power core.  Or, you did just wipe out 2 squads with barely a scratch, so I'm open to an ideas you have.

The mining facility is still evacuated.  There will be a small garrison of troops guarding it.  The Imperial garrison isn't far away and has additional troops, transports, and tie fighters.

We aren't using maps obviously so we don't need to be very specific about the base and layout.  We can keep it narrative like we have been.

Agreed.  Even with that lightsaber I would avoid a frontal assault.  I'm not healthy enough to keep up with you, I would just be a liability.  But I can still be of help.  If we can get access to a dataport I can hack the computer system and help you gain entry without being seen.  If I'm lucky I may be even able to trigger a false alarm and divert troops to a different area.

Mata limps to a sensor panel and pulls up numerous maps.  She scrolls through a few of them and then finds what she's looking for.

Here.  This should do it.  Mata points to a high peak close to the mining facility.

There is a large comm relay tower at this high point.  I can access the system from there and keep an eye on the activity at the garrison as well.  All you need to do is make it into the power core and upload this virus.  When it overloads it will vaporize everything for a mile.

Captain Stazi starts flicking switches on a console and you can hear systems around the ship powering up.

With the surrounding terrain and mining equipment I will be able to land at the base of the peak avoiding attention.  All Imperial patrols are focused on the cave systems at this time.  I will return to this spot and await your signal for extraction.  I suggest you don't waste time.  If Star Destroyers show up in system before we leave it will be very difficult to escape.  And the Imperial Navy has been known to employ orbital bombardments as a recon tactic.

Take the remaining stimpacks.  But the fee for the next job will cost the Rebellion extra.
Captain motions to the med bay as he leaves for the cockpit.

Soon you are airborne - although barely off the ground.  The ship rattles fiercely as it rockets down another canyon.

Dice Roll:

1 success on a roll of 3 Proficiency, 3 Difficulty, 1 Boost

We are approaching the target.  Get ready for immediate departure.  Scanners are clear.

The landing ramp drops before the ship touches down.   You exit in a cloud of dust as the engines roar sending the ship back down the canyon.  Silence quickly returns.  Scanning the horizon you see no activity.

Awesome.  Another climb.  Mata grumbles and heads up the scree covered slope.

Once at the top you have a commanding view of the valley below.  On one side is the mining facility.  A few maintenance droids are all you see except for some white clad storm troopers on the landing pad.

On the other side of the valley is the Imperial garrison.  You can see a large amount of activity there.  Probe droids and troop transports are heading out into the expanse flanked by tie fighters to patrol the area around the crystal caves.

Mata opens an access panel and sits down to get to work.

Dice Roll:

2 successes on a roll of 1 Ability, 2 Proficiency, 2 Difficulty

Alright I'm in.  I'll be able to access all the nonsecure areas of the facility.  Security doors and sensors I will have to take down as you encounter them.

She hands Revan a datapad.

Get to the power core and upload this file.  I would set it to trigger when the systems power up to work mode but I can't risk having any innocents around - so it has a 24 hour timer.

Good Luck.

You have 2 stimpacks.  The first one will heal 5 damage and the second will heal 4.

You cautiously make your way down to the facility taking note of the Stormtroopers patrol pattern.  You decide on a path that follows a small depression but the sharp obsidian makes it rough going. Suffer 1 strain from the threat rolled.

Pausing at the edge of the landing pad you wait for the Stormtroopers to shift their watch.

Right on schedule.  We can always depend on them to follow orders.  I've unlocked the access door next to the landing pad blast door.  Once inside work your way to the east side of the building.  The west is the shaft that leads down to the mine.

Mice droids scurry underfoot as you work your way towards the mine shaft.  The operation was hastily evacuated and all signs of retreat lead towards the landing pad.  Lighting systems power up as you enter vacant hallways.  Random Gonk droids lumber along their paths of service.

You make your way through the overseer quarters, a barracks unit that looks to support around 50 men.  Lockers are open and you can tell the people here were in a big hurry to leave.  A few datapads are strewn about.

I'm tracking your progress through the lighting system.  If you keep going you will enter the slave quarters.  It's a divided ring around the central mining shaft.  Past that is the shaft itself.  I see some activity in there but I can't make out what it is.

The crystal clad spiders reflect a brilliant purple light as your lightsaber ignites.

A hit with +1 and 2 advantages due to superior.  9 damage and  you can trigger linked with the 2 advantages to land a second strike.  It has to be the same target but because this is a minion group their hp and attack are pooled and I consider it one target.

Revan plunges downward into the belly up spider sinking the blade to the hilt.  With a sweeping motion he kills the spider and severs the 4 front legs of the other.  A simple slash decapitates the second legged beast.

Too easy.  Going to have to give you more of a challenge.

Lessons from the Past lead to Hidden Depths

After about 15 minutes you head the winning sublight engines of the freighter.

Dice Roll:

1 advantage, 1 failure on a roll of 3 Proficiency, 3 Difficulty

You see the ramp drop as the ship banks hard to break.  The repulsors fire sending debris flying and the ship sinks down onto its landing gear a few meters from you.

You help Mata aboard and sit her down in the med bay.  Suddenly the ship climbs hard and you have to grab compartment doors to remain on your feet.

Making your way to the cockpit you take a seat behind the captain.

Our time here has run out.  A squadron of Star Destroyers has jumped into the system on the far side of the planet.  We only have a few minutes before they breach the horizon and enact their blockade.  This changes our trajectory and I have to calculate a new jump.

The blue sky in front of you is quickly fading to black as you near orbit.  Captain Stazi is quickly flipping switches when a red signal starts flashing on the conrtol panel.

Tie Fighters have scrambled from the planet garrison.  You will have to man the defensive cannons and hold them off until we can jump to lightspeed.

Captains Initiative roll:

Dice Roll:

4 successes, 1 triumph on a roll of 1 Ability, 3 Proficiency

Tie Fighters roll:

Dice Roll:

2 successes, 1 advantage on a roll of 2 Ability

You have initiative and may strike first.

Revan races back to the ventral turret and powers up the cannons.  The system lights up quickly and the sensor display shows 2 small ships closing fast.  You swing the turret to face the direction of attack and see 2 Tie Fighters swooping down to start their attack run.

Your Attack skill will be Gunnery.  3 green vs 3 purple due to their higher speed

The targeting system rings out a solid tone as you aim in front of the lead Tie.  You press the trigger and red cannon bolts fill the space in front of you.

The second Tie barrel rolls out of the path of your attack but the first is caught dead center and explodes into sparks of white and orange.

The remaining Tie finishes its roll and swings in for an attack.

The Tie Fighters green bolts light up the inside of your turret but the shots just barely miss.  The fighter screams out of view as you try to track it but it is difficult due to its raw speed.

The navcomputer is calculating the jump now.  We need more time.  Captain Stazi states over the comms.

Mata's urgent voice jumps in immediately after the Captain.

We've got a problem.  Those star destroyers are faster than they should be.  They will be breaking the planet horizon any second. Scanning the lead Destroyer now.

Those aren't  standard issue.  They are ships from Death Squadron - Vader's personal fleet. The lead destroyer is the Chimera and its launching Interceptors now!

The targeting system starts chirping as you swing the cannons to face the last Tie blocking your escape.

3 green 3 difficulty

The Tie Fighter pulls hard into a loop to put your ship back in its sights.  You track its trajectory with the cannons and pull the trigger when it levels out.  The fighters wings separate as the bolts breach its hull.  The ship splits in half in a shower of sparks.

Mata shouts over the comms
Interceptors closing!

You turn the turret to face the incoming swarm and see a trio of Star Destroyers in a spear formation.  An icy chill falls over you and the lead Star Destroyer grows until it consumes your vision.  You feel the power of the dark side gripping your chest.

Coordinates locked.  Jumping to lightspeed.

The pinpoint stars stretch into a column of light and you are released from the cold grip.

Back on Phelam you depart the starport with Mata.

That was supposed to be a routine sabotage mission on a backwater planet but your crystals drew some serious Imperial attention. Thanks for holding up your end of the bargain but it looks like we didn't even need to go through the trouble.  The Death Squadron vaporized that whole side of the planet from orbit.  Mining operation, caves, everything.  It's dangerous times for your kind now.  The Rebellion is always looking for a good fighter.  Find me if you need our help.

A swoop bike pulls in front of you as you approach the traffic.  Mata hops on the back and it speeds off into the city.

20xp for obtaining a crystal.
5xp for passing the force test.
10 xp for sabotaging the power core and escaping.
