RTJ and Character Creation

Send me a RTJ and your Character concept.

A Base trainer starts out at LV5 and has three LV10 starter Pokemon.
Pick the first stage of something reasonable as your starter.
By "something reasonable" we mean either something that remains a sad panda for many, many levels, a three step evolution Pokemon, or both.
Unlike the recommendations from the book, we DO allow Rock, Steel, or Ghost right out the gate.
It has one Egg Move or Move tutor move for free.
Personally, I recommend the Egg Move. Tutor slots are precious - an Egg Move has flexibility in what it counts as.

A Mon has a total of fourteen Moves over the course of its life.
Taught, Tutored, TMed, or HMed Moves are limited to a total of seven of these fourteen.
Naturally learned or Egg Moves have no such limitations - you could have all fourteen of your Mon's moves be these, if you wished.

Since I can't make the Pokedoller sign here we are just going to rename them the Demik, or "gold," such as it is.
6000 Demik to spend however you like on whatever you like. Remaining money goes in your pocket. Be advised, you may start in Medias Res, so you should buy something. If you don't, I'm going to assume you are a suicidal troll character, like Koffing. Don't be Koffing.
An additional 6000 Demik on permanent items. Once this is done, unspent money is lost.
Once purchasing is done, one of your permanent items is upgraded to an alchemical item. Cost is largely ignored here, although a substandard item being upgraded results in a substandard alchemical item, like Rex's damaged Brimstone Blade, an upgraded Simple Weapon, when the base of the weapon assumes the weapon is a Fine Small Melee Weapon.

RTJ and Character Creation

Oh, here is this legal jargon. Add it to your RTJ

I, (Your username), am (Your age) years old. It is for me legal to participate in adult games according to the RPoL's ToU and in my area of residence.
I also have read and understood the rules for adult games on RPoL and will abide by them.

The site, since this was written, has thankfully undergone a revision making this automatic. This is no longer needed. This will be updated if word drops from on-high contradicting this.

RTJ and Character Creation

So, playing as Pokemon. You actually want to do this?

Well, it does have its perks. I won't cover them, because you know why you are looking at this. Lets start with the bad news first, though.

First, you need to speak. The Approved Homebrew thread has a Poke Edge with your name on it, whether you know it or not. Yes, this is an Edge tax. I'm Giratina; if you want free things, go talk to other "gods."

Mortals like understanding their smart Pokemon friends, and while I can hear you just fine, I do not serve as a lowly translator for mortals. Speaking of other mortals, while the "PCs" might be okay with a wild superweapon in their ranks, often being such things themselves, most others get a little edgy around superweapons when they are not the same species.

And yes, most of you, along with the residents of the world you will be in, would just like to get these silly notions of implied slavery out of the way so that everyone can bond with their murder-friends and have fun together.

I won't stop that. I am simply informing you that making it clear a sentient superweapon has no checks on it save for its own conscious makes those in power nervous. They look at their own species with suspicion, never mind what you might bring if you happen to be something very terrifying, like a Bulbasaur, a Charmander, or a hard-working Magikarp.

The Pokemon Nobles are little better, but you will have an easier time talking to some of them. The rest might see you as competition, so be polite to reduce the chances of that. You are a noble among Pokemon, but don't let that go to your head. If you are too quirky, you will be alienated, such as a story I heard about a Meowth (of all things) that walked upright like a human to attract a mate and ended up outcast for his trouble. Hilarious!

However, comedy aside, in all seriousness, think carefully before you do this. The Meowth might have found a home among humans in the long run, but in the end, he comes before me due to the company that is okay with morally ambiguous, intelligent Pokemon with a larcenous streak. He is not welcome in society without a Capture Crystal, or the assumption of being attached to one. Most will assume this by default of any Pokemon, so try not to break the illusion. You need to accrue more...wealth...for yourself.

RTJ and Character Creation

It has crossed my mind that perhaps I should expand on character expectation beyond "make a character that is mechanically functional." As...simplified as it is, the 5th Edition of That Other Roleplaying Game had an interesting idea.

I'm going to ask everyone to take three things:

One Ideal: This is something your character believes in that motivates them to action. For example, Rex believes in being free from anything that wants to control him.

One Bond: This is something other than another PC or their Mons that ties them to the world, a noun of some kind that possesses the power to make them act in its advancement or preservation. For example, Rex desires to become the greatest thief that ever lived.

One Flaw: This is something that I can use to make your life more...interesting. Given that I can do this anyways, this is less "I will use this to make your character miserable" and more "you have some control in how I'm going to make your character miserable." For example, when Rex sees something valuable, he begins planning its heist reflexively.
