Another Sacred Flame, 7 radiant damage if the elf fails a DC 13 DEX save.
20:18, Today: Esperon rolled 7 using 1d8 with rolls of 7.  Sacred Flame damage.

Re: The Ghostwood Treaty [Assassination]
In one quick, lithe move, Cear puts himself outside of Zog and Greyband's reach, though Groboden's crackling beam of energy stays locked on him.

"There is no place left in the world for the likes of you.  I have your measure now.  If I see you again, I will devour you."  It's difficult to say if he's addressing Zog personally, or including all four of you in that terrible statement.  "Spread this message:  There will be no peace."

After repeating his message again, he spins and dashes away.  As he disappears into the shadows, Groboden's bolt fizzles and dies.

Cear uses his Cunning Action to Disengage, then uses the Dash action to run toward the west wall of the keep.

That's the end of combat rounds.  Are you going to let him go so you can keep looking for Sir Erik, or are you going to follow him?  Or split up to do both?  Or something else?

Greyband could tell that his group was overmatched with the elf. "We'll see about next time, you bastard," he mutters under his breath before he shouts, "Let him go. Let's find Sir Erik," he says. The group heads off to find Sir Erik and see what damage this Cear has wrought...

Re: The Ghostwood Treaty [Assassination]
At the north end of the keep, stone rubble litters the ground.  Tendrils of smoke still linger in the air.  The explosion was powerful, but localized.  The keep wall and the two rear towers still stand, but the Hall of the Holy is gone.  The dust of the newly initiated paladins slowly drifts in the wind.

Sir Erik Kaisen and his men are searching the rubble.  He calls you over to join them, but you can find no survivors and no clues amid the destruction.  Sir Erik's shoulders are bowed down by the great loss suffered here.  Shaking his head, he asks "How are things faring inside the keep?  Better than out here, I hope.  Did you find anything in the elven quarters or the war room?"

(Groboden's passive investigation is high enough to conclusively say there's nothing more to be found in the rubble.  Esperon's passive perception is high enough to spot the action at the window.)

Is this the elf we just fought?

Where did we encounter the elf? I'm fuzzy on where we ran into him.

Re: The Ghostwood Treaty [Assassination]
Esperon can't say for sure, but it's not likely to be Cear, since he ran off toward the stables and the outer wall to the west after your fight, and this window is set in north-facing wall of the Central keep.

Sorry for the confusion.  You had left the keep through the southern door, then I assumed you'd head around the west side of the keep to avoid the elven encampment on the east side.  You encountered Cear outside, between the stables the Central Keep (locations 3 and 4 on game map for Group 0).  Your fight took place alongside the west-facing wall Central Keep as you were circling around the Central Keep to find Sir Erik at the Hall of the Holy.  The Hall of the Holy was location 7 on that map, but it's nothing but rubble now.

Greyband smirks and very quickly summarizes the turn of events, including the battle with the invisible assassins, the prisoners' revelations and the fight with Cear. "I would not have anyone chase the last fellow--we were fortunate that he fled. I am not sure we could have beaten him."

He then pointed out the shadowy figure in the nearby keep. "There is yet more to look into, it seems. Shadows abound tonight."

"Human assassins, but hired by an elf.  There will be no peace."  Sir Erik mutters to himself as he digests Greyband's report.  "We were so close."  He calls a stop to the search for survivors.

When Greyband points back to the keep, he says, "Go.  Whatever else is happening, we have to try and stop it."

Re: The Ghostwood Treaty [Assassination]
I'm assuming you go back into the keep, but if I'm wrong we can backtrack and edit a change.

The four of you head back into the keep.  No rest for the weary tonight.  As you reach the third floor, metal clangs on metal, immediately followed by a shout.  "Treachery!  Murder!  I have them!"  The voice is Edwin Moss'.

Outside his closed door, the two guards lay limp on the ground, blood flowing smoothly from the long slits across their throats, tracing the cracks and crevices in the floor.

On Game Map for Group 1, you find the dead guards in room 3.2, and you can hear Moss fighting beyond the closed door, in room 3.4.  Do you have any prep actions to make out here, or do you head straight into his office?

Re: The Ghostwood Treaty [Assassination]
Esperon, Groboden, and Greyband pull the door open. Immediately in front of you is man in a guard’s uniform.  His back is to you, but he quickly turns, surprise showing on the rough features of his face.  Beyond him, Moss is cornered behind his desk, defending himself from more men in the uniform of Ghostwood Keep, one on either side of him.  A gash from his shoulder bleeds down the arm of his shirt.  A fourth imposter in guard’s uniform waits for his opening to strike at the commander of Ghostwood.  The last assailant stands back from the fight to your left.

Initiative time for these three.  Anyone who beats a 19 will get to act before any of the NPCs take another action.  Depending on which of your guys attacks which of the enemies, you might get to advantage due to surprise this round.

Zog flits through the small adjacent room and finds himself in a larger room littered with the debris of soldiers (room 3.6 on the Game Map for Group 1).  A dozen cots line the walls, each with a small trunk.  The fighting men must have left in a rush, because some of the trunks have been left open and the blankets on the cots are in disarray.  Pieces or armor are scattered about the room.  In one corner, a game of dice has been left out on the floor, a few coins still lying around it on the floor.

There's only one other door in this room, and it's positioned to open up directly into the commander's office.

I have shamelessly copied a map I put up over a decade ago for another group that I ran this module for.  The men in Ghostwood uniform are marked with A1-A5.  Edwin Moss is marked with an M, behind the desk.  Zog will be able to join the combat on Round 2, after he opens the door at the bottom of the map, while your other three guys are starting Round 1 now by entering from the open door marked with a J.  The X's are the dead guards they've passed.  You can ignore everything else on the map, as it doesn't pertain to our game.

Re: The Ghostwood Treaty [Assassination]
The man on the far side of Moss (A2) swings his short sword at Moss.  The commander parries the first attack, but the man's second swing slashes across his arm.

The guard who had been waiting for an opening to attack Moss (A4) turns when Greyband opens the door.  He dashes across the room to block the way and keep you from interfering.  He stabs at Greyband  with two quick motions.

The second man who has Moss cornered behind his desk (A1) plunges his short sword into the commander's side twice in quick succession.  Moss falls against the wall, gasping for breath, but manages to keep his sword up.

At the top of the top of this round, Zog can open the door and see what all happens this round without being noticed by the enemies (his stealth is high enough, I'll just give that to you), then you can go straight to his actions after Esperon takes his turn.

I'm assuming Greyband's in place to enter first, but if I'm wrong, let me know and we can retcon Asn 4's atk.

Re: The Ghostwood Treaty [Assassination]
The man who was standing back from the fight turns toward Greyband.  He pulls a dagger from inside his sleeve and throws it, piercing through an exposed spot in Greyband's armor.  The surprised man finally gather his wits enough to see that there are more behind Greyband, and he calls out for his god to strike one of them down.

Across the room, Commander Moss continues to fight back against the assassins.  One falls under his blade, but the other remains.

Combat Round 1 (continued)
11 Groboden  (Your turn)
  2 Esperon
Combat Round 2
19 Zog
19 Asn 2:  DEAD.  (killed by Moss behind desk)
19 Asn 4:  AC 12.  HP 17/27.  (Attacking Greyband at door)

12 Asn 5:  AC 13.  HP 27.  (Attacking Esperon at door)

A3 makes a ranged atk on Greyband, hits for 5 damage.
A5 casts sacred flame at Esperon or Groboden (whichever is standing directly behind Greyband).  You decide which one it is and make a DC 13 DEX save.  If it fails, take 6 damage.
Moss kills A2, and wounds A1.

Greyband has to divide his attention between the two assassins attacking at the door.  The first assassin is able to take advantage of this.  His first slash narrowly misses, but his second one leaves a deep gash across Greyband's arm.

Behind the desk, Moss's opponent also scores two more hits on the commander.  Both of them are bleeding heavily.  The assassin calls out to the one standing in the middle of the room.  "Help me finish him first, then we can take care of those others."
