A night in the city
"Bosun! Have a boat prepared to take these two back to shore", he said not taking his eyes off of Waydin.

"Aye sir!" was the reply over his shoulder.

Captain Rhos stepped closer to Waydin. "I am aware who butters our bread in the City of Sails, Mage. I may not...Agree with the arrangement but Ship Renthor follows the will of the Brotherhood", he said in a low voice that only Waydin & Milos could hear.

Waydin could not help to notice by the captain's mannerisms and stance, his last unsaid words might be "for the moment", upon his mind.

Waydin made a curt nod, to the Captain. He turned upon his heel, and moved to the railing to await the boat, that would ferry back to the city docks. Waydin gave Milos a disapproving look.

"I know that look - the lieutenants on my ship give me that look all the time...Better for me to speak and give you the opening, Waydin. As I said, there is no love lost between Ship Suljack and Ship Renthor - by me speaking, it looks like you ordered me to get the boat and see if our fair captain challenged us or let us have our way...Now we know that one is no friend of the Brotherhood", Milos said as a boat was readied for their departure.

In reply to DM (msg # 78):

The young mage raised an eyebrow, in repose to what Milos said. "Perhaps." Was all that Milos received in way of a response. When the boat was made ready, Waydin climbed cown into the craft, and found a seat. He did not look happy at all, which Milos might find amusing. It was as he told Milos earlier.Waydin's idea of dealing with water, was in his bath.

The boat took them to the one of docks of the Hosttower. Upon disembarking, Milos spoke.

"Should I leave this with you? To be blunt, ill be killing dozens of men from here till my ship carrying this", as he holds up the small hand chest.

In reply to DM (msg # 80):

Milo's words caused Waydin to have a thoughtful expression. " One of the Masters or mid level Mages will take it from me. It seems we both have the same problem, Milos. Do you know of a safe place, we might go to examine what we found?"

Milos though for a moment.

"I do but we will need something to put this chest & coffer in - can you get us large sack, blanket or tarp to wrap them up in? It would be less conspicuous."

Waydin thought a moment, then with a sigh, removed his cloak and handed it to Mikos. " It is the only one I own, pray take care of it. Now lead on to this place of yours."

Taking the offered cloak, Milos wrapped the chest and coffer till they were concealed so that it looked like a bundle of clothes and not possible riches. Leading the way, Milos and Waydin left Cutlass isle.

Back into Luskan proper, they headed north toward the market and to a side street until they were in front of a small warehouse. Unlocking the door, both men went inside after Milos lit a small lamp nearby.

It was small as warehouses go but packed with storage crates and barrels. "We use this place to store ship provisions", Milos said, putting the concealed chest and coffer down. "We should be to ourselves here for awhile", he said as he unwrapped the cloak and offered it back to Waydin.

The mageling set the chest and coffer on a crate, and moved the lamp next to them to get a better look at each item. " The question that begs to be asked,Milos, are one or both trapped?" Said Waydin, as his eyes squinted in concentration at examining the chest.

Maydin took his dagger, and moved to the side of the chest. "Stand behind me." He said to Milos. He attempted to to open the latch, and then flip open the chest's lid using the dagger blade for both tasks.

"Hold Waydin", Milos said. "I have some...Expertise in opening containers."

He reached into his large belt pouch and pulled out a leather satchel and placed it before the chest & coffer. Rolling it out, Waydin saw a set of picks.

"My mother was one of Mask's favorites as you heard me say days ago...With your permission - or do you wish to continue poking with your dagger?"

Milo's words stayed Waydin's dagger. He withdrew both the blade and himself from the chest. "Never let it be said that I would stand in the way of one wishing to worship the god mask. Pray, proceed, Milos" Said the mageling, even as he said a silent prayer to Mystra to survive his companions actions.

Milos began work on the hand chest. He ran his hand along the seam of where the lid and container met & then on the sides. Satisfied, he pulled out two of his tools and began working on the lock.

After a few twists and turns, he heard a popping sound and grinned, satisfied that the lock was opened. He slighty opened the chest and felt the inside of it with two fingers. Keeping his hand on the left side for a few seconds, he then removed his hand opened the chest halfway, removing a needle from a section in the lid.

Fully opening the chest, they both saw its contents.

There were a few trade bars, some coin which was mainly gold and silver and some jewelry as well.

A slight smile came to the lips of Waydin, when the contents of the small chest where revealed. " It seems our efforts this night, are to be rewarded, Milos. I think an equal division of the contests is called for. " Waydin placed his dagger blade into the middle of the wealth and moved it around a bit.

The Mageling then regarded his companion." Do you think you can repeat your feats upon the coffer? " He asked in a most serious tone of voice/

"We shall see", Milos said as he grabbed the coffer and ran his hands over its top & sides. He studied the lock for a few seconds before finding the picks he needed for opening it.

The lock on the coffer proved more difficult to open than the chest and Milos was showing frustration as he traded one pick for another.

"Stubborn lock", he muttered as he continued his efforts of opening it.

Working & keeping his eyes on the lock, Milos said, "Id rather not risk it lest there might be something volatile in the coffer - the whole warehouse might be destroyed."

After a few moments a "Click" is heard from the coffer's lock.

"That was most difficult...And now to see what we have."

He opened the coffer to reveal a dagger, 4 potion bottles and a wand.

When the coffer's contents revealed themselves, Waydin felt himself holding his breath. His pulse quickened. and  his mouth was dry. To the young Mageling, the few items, where like a Dragon hoard to his way of thinking. The gold was all but forgotten, and even the potions for the moment. Waydin's entire attention was focused upon the splendor item of wood about the length of his forearm.

In a hoarse whisper" Mystra be praised." As his hand slowly started to stretch out toward the Wand's resting place.

Taking the wand, Waydin could se it was smooth, the wood polished and it was about a foot in length, give or take an inch - simple yet elegant.

"Can you identify its purpose or shall I use my usual contacts to ascertain its properties as well as the other items we have found?", Milos asks as he watches the mageling inspect the wand.

Waydin frowned at the questions his companion had asked. He in no way, wish to admit what he considered weakness, but he did not want the powers that be in the Brotherhood to learn of their new found treasures. " If you think your contacts are worthy of trust, by all means use them. But how do you know of someone that can determine the function of a wand, and the purpose of a potion,Milos?" Asked the Mageling of the Pirate.

Waydin raised an eyebrow, when Milos made mention of other mages in the city that where not of the Brotherhood. " In other words, none of my business. I can respect you wishing to guard your contacts, Milos. " Waydin held the wand for a few moments, studying it in the light of the Lantern. He looked for anything out of the ordinary, like perhaps the activation word or phrase. He doubted his would find such, it it was worthy of the effort to find such.

The young mage thought a few more moments, then slowly nodded. " Agreed. Have your contacts make out what these things might be. I have no interest in the gold, just the wand and what potions I can use." Said Waydin.

"Very well - I will make my inquiries...We should head back to the Cutlass where this night has started and you can report to whats left of your patrol."

They left the warehouse together and made their way back.

Indeed there were only a few of the watchmen left from Waydin's patrol and Milos vouched for Waydin's actions in the melee that ensued outside the establishment and subsequent action on board the ship. He was thanked for his duty and allowed to head back home.

It was early dawn when Waydin made his way back to the Sea Tower and his quarters. He was excused from his duties for the day since serving in the watch.
