The accursed armour that had thwarted Grund'lak struck him again in the ribs. This time the bone gave, splintering into his lung.
The hulking suit to his left smashed him in the head and the world exploded.
Grund'lak, killer of a thousand men, descended into darkness as his body swayed, not yet aware that it should fall.

Then the red eye opened. It was looking at him. Mocking him. Gruumsh himself was laughing at the half-orc who had dared to think he could escape his nature.
The old fury pushed in through Grund's broken skull, and into his shattered chest. He did not have the will to fight it. His body surged with adrenaline, and crimson blanketed his vision.

Almost immediately, the burning yellow light of Tiwaz intervened. Grund had dedicated his soul to the ancient deity, and it had an equal claim as Gruumsh.

Blood red rage coated his hands, and cleansing gold seared his eyes.

Grund pressed his glowing left hand to the unscratched enemy beside him.
"Die."
Necrotic destruction flowed through his arm and rust flowed across the once-pristine plates of the enchanted machination. *1

*2

He then slipped his shield back on and struck the now-copper-coloured metal with his hammer. Despite its weakened state, Grund's blow was weaker still and the attack bounced off ineffectually. *3

"Ah feth."

He drew the last of Tiwaz's strength into himself. The speed of the nether-realm suffused his body, and his god's brute force bolstered his drained weapon arm.
With a wood-splitting bellow, he laid into the floundering armour beside the one he had just attacked. The hammer finally found it's mark, and the chest-piece burst like a ripe watermelon. Arcane energies fled into the night as the magic was undone. *4

Savtok wanted to question the Elves and the Orc, but there was no time. He lashed out at the armour.

17:01, Today: Savtok Thunderbrow rolled 10 using 1d20+5.  Attack vs Armour.

The mighty blow glanced off the steel, a blow that would have rung the ears of an occupant, had there been one. Savtok tried again on the rebound.

14:23, Today: Savtok Thunderbrow rolled 13 using 1d20+5.  Second attack vs Armour (advantage I never knew I had :P ).

It clanged harmlessly off the suit. Savtok addressed the Elf woman.

"Elf-bitch, either you tear this foul armour down right now, or you go and save your  friend from his fate."

If the madam stays near me (5ft), I'll use my reaction to protect her from any blows, giving her foe disadvantage. It seems focused on me, though, so it's up to Elf-bitch.

The Watcher winced as Lady Glariel became a puppet to the steel fists of the enchanted armor, bareky aware of anything else around him.
"My Lady!" He fumbled in a pouch on his side and removed two potions each holding a strange milky liquid.
"Here!" He rolled one to the Paladin. As it turned over and over across the deck, its contents began to glimmer red and violent. 1.
KRIT! The water from the last two suits of armor had collected where they had attacked Akylas's illusion. The potion came to a stop, at least 5 feet from Lady Glariel.

He took one gulp to down the other potion. 2.
He grimaced a moment and then felt his body restored, with strength regained, he took a moment to find his bearings.
The three companions had managed to tilt the scales. He was impressed and found resolve in their small triumph.

The axe beside him whirred with possessive magic.
Not forgetting its latest attack, he slashed at it with his longsword. 3.
The elven steel met the axe exactly in the middle of its staff. The swords edge took and it glided down the length of the axe, separating the it in two with the ease of a knife through well-cooked troll fat. 4.

He bolted for the remaining suit of armor. The armor was readying for its next attack, there was no time to pick up the potion, instead he decided to steal the attention of the armor. He let out a scream as he ran. 5.
It was useless; the armor kept its gaze fixed upon Glariel.

"Thank you," Glariel forced a bloody and painful half-smile, half-grimace at the ranger.

She closed her eyes and chanted an incantation as she held her bare fingertips to the back of neck.
"Heal this flesh with your flames, Urla'galduin." 1.

Divine flames engulfed her figure, but she seemed in no pain. As her wounds healed, the color in her eyes grew fainter.

She stepped into her swing as she attacked the armor. The armor countered the the paladin's attack with its vambrace, her mace simply sliding down the suit's forearm. 2.

Shouts and noises came from below deck. Captain Talljaw tried his best to put up a significant fight. He had to buy the others as much time as he could.
"I kani 'ol 'im much longer!"

The enemies above deck, oblivious to the swift defeat of their comrades, pressed the attack once more.

The flail delivered the first blow, flying itself through the air at the dwarf. 1.
Yet again, the dwarf's superior armor took the blow, suffering little more than a scratch.

The last remaining suit of possessed armor ignored the newly arrived ranger. It hooked with its left gauntlet at the she-elf. Savtok intervened and pushed his shield in the way deflecting the blow. 2.

Then came the right, a straight jab. 3.
The dwarf shoved his shield in the way, but the armor brought its left arm down and pushed it clear. The punch flew between the elf's weapon and shield and hit her square in the chest. 4.
The elf weezed, then coughed. A clot of blood burst from her mouth. She steadied herself, not willing to give up.

A thud came from beyond the stairs and was followed by the kind of shriek which accompanied shattering pain.

"Good hammer this, eh Captain?" Another thud, then another scream reverberated from below. "There you are. Now you don't have to worry about even healing that hand."

That elf-woman. She mentioned Urla'galduin. So these two were Protectors then, of the Order of the Silver Shield. It would seem the god of the Burning Tree had designs for Grund and his companions. He didn't have the energy to consider the ramifications, but he filed it away for later; there was more work to be done till he had time to meditate.

The sounds of battle reaching its conclusion drifted up from below deck. The captain was one of the good ones, and didn't deserve this mess he'd landed in. Grund would have gone down to lend assistance, but he was in no position to fight. The orc captain would be better off if the group finished off the enchantments on deck and joined their strength against the presence below.

With his mind made up, Grund'lak shuffled toward the last remaining suit of armour. *1 He reached toward the nether realm again. It was agony - his mind felt ready to explode with the effort - but he managed to locate the well of cleansing in Tiwaz's land, and he drank of it's power. This well was the first thing he discovered there, and it was the reason he had survived that initial blood-bath that introduced him to Tiwaz. He had need of it again today.

The pain in Grund's head and chest lessened as the the energies of the well coursed through him, *2 hot and heady like Orcish moonshine. His shield felt light once more, and his stride lengthened. Now to take care of that armour...

1. Grund uses his move action.

"My Lady Glariel, you hit it first!" The Watcher's words were more of a plea than an order.

Glariel got her weapon ready. She swung the mace upward at the armor. 1.
The mace caught the armor under the chin as it forced the suits helmet upwards, the paladin's sacred power flowed throw her weapon, igniting in the same light as before. 2. 3.

The armor seemed frozen before it stumbled back, and then forward. Its magic sinews grew weak and its arms slunk to its sides as it shivered.

"Take it down!" This was an order.

Again, Savtok intervened and caused the armor to fail its attack.

The paladin turned as soon as The Watcher's hit landed. She moved swiftly towards the potion he had tried to roll to her earlier. She gulped it down with impressive speed. She sighed and closed her eyes as she felt the magic of the potion course through her body, mending her wounds.

After it had done its work, she threw the flask down and shifted her feet and shield into a defensive stance.

The others hadn't moved.

She twisted her head slightly to her left, looking at them over her pauldron. Her words boomed urgency, fear flared in her eyes.

The stairs creaked as Gura'shul ascended.

"My, my..." he stepped over the heap of armor at the entrance to the stair, "you certainly put up a fight."

Gura'shul was uncharacteristically muscular for a dark elf. His white flowed wildly past his shoulders. His sky-blue eyes seemed to lack both pupil and iris. He wore a set of black leather armor, studded with ebony bits along most of the seams over his pale purple skin.

In his right hand, he held a warhammer that displayed the same pattern of runes and intricacies as Glariel's shield and armor. The blunt end was covered in blood.

"I'm sorry about the mess too, dear," he nodded towards the hammer. "But I need to force your hand." He smirked as he said the final word.

He showed no signs of being intimidated even when so obviously outnumbered.

He drew a long dagger from his belt. Its silver finish shone and the runes which followed beneath the entire edge of the blade were neither elven, dwarvish or anything the three companions had seen before. The symbols glistered in midnight blue against the daylight.

He hunched forward and then rushed at the paladin. He swung with the hammer. The paladin parried with her shield. He swung it again. This time she met his blow with her mace.

Then, with his left arm, he lashed at the paladin's mace wielding arm. It found a gap in her armor and as he withdrew it, her blood covered the blade. The paladin grimaced but let out no sound.

In reply to Gura'shul (msg # 76):

Savtok, now too annoyed to even hint at the pretense of protecting his ad-hoc compatriots, dispensed with the pleasantries.

"You fucking elves, talking in riddles, traipsing in the shadows, and using magic to get good steel to fight in your feeble stead."

Savtok strode towards the dark elf with annoyed purpose, his weapons at his sides, as though he were going to put the elf over his knee rather than narrow his skull.

"If you'd spend less time combing your hair, maybe you'd be able to face us when we're fresh and ready, rather than skulking about below deck, looking for your precious herbs, hoping that they will finally get you hard so you can have children before you're 300 fucking years old."

He grew close to the focus of his annoyance. For but a moment, he glanced at the old man and the orc, hoping they knew that they must make this quick- even now, his ribs throbbed. Before the enemy could notice, however, he resumed his hissing bellows, speaking as though he were trying to get the dark elf out of his mouth.

"I'm old, embattled, and drunk, and I will still flatten you with my bare fists and choke you with my beard..."

Savtok spat sharply at Gura'shul.

"...elf."

The phlegm, viscous from exertion, burst free from Savtok's mouth, but his exaggerated movements allowed his beard to gain purchase on the edge of the projectile. It snapped back, finding root in the thick beard of the incensed Savtok, far enough from the mouth for him to not notice, but not close enough to the edge for it to be lost in the outline. The dwarf had clearly stopped caring about the projectile the second it left him, and it didn't even occur to him to question where it had actually gone- he thundered, glistening in the moonlight, towards his quarry.

13:13, Today: Savtok Thunderbrow rolled 6 using 1d20+5 with rolls of 1.  Attack vs Gura'shul.

"Now you call dwarves to your aid, Glariel? A half breed ranger was not enough? But now, a dwarf? How low of you." Gurashul grimaced with fury at Savtok. He breathed audibly from his nose in disgust.

"Graceless treasure hoarders, the only good dwarf is a dead one, and even then... he's second rate. A dead dwarf still reeks of dwarf greed and overindulgence for centuries." His nose wrinkled and his eyebrows squeezed down in anger.

"The best dwarf is already dead and well burnt so that nothing remains of his filth but ash. But you, Master dwarf, after that outburst, have convinced me. I will not wait until your death to allow my flames to consume you. I will burn you while you still breathe, your wails will punctuate the flames and your death throes encourage them."

The Antagonist Appears!
All of the combatants had paused, staring at each other for an uncomfortably long time. Savtok buried his hammer into the deck of the ship, and clapped his meaty palms together, as if trying to catch the attention of a daydreaming student.
