BB's B and B

Carved above the door is the Symbol of the Pathfinder Society

Before you even enter the large Plaster and Stone building, you can plainly smell the delicious foods that Bon-Bon's is known for, and upon entering the heady smells dominate the senses. The large main room has a long bar at one end that functions as both a bar counter at one end and the front for the general store at the other. Prices for the food and drink being served are posted on a large chalkboard behind the counter, while dry goods and a few short rows of shelves loaded with sundries huddle near the far corner.

The main room is filled with tables in the center and booths at the edges, each of the booths has a thick silk curtain that can be drawn to block out sound and light either from entering or leaving. Images of plants and dancing foxes adorn the walls and an ornate mountain scene acts as the background for the stage. The common room is almost never empty and Bon-Bon herself can usually be found either here or in the reading room.

Just to the right of the entrance is the reading room, which has plush chairs, several low tables, and walls lined with built-in bookshelves. Many different types of books are available here, all for free, but the Maps, folios, and journals collected from the months that the expedition has been going make this a popular first stop for anyone willing to venture into the fog.
Study in the reading room for one hour provides a +3 bonus on a Knowledge (Geography, Local, and Nature) regarding Nowhere and it's peculiarities.
Study in the reading room also allows re-rolling of any failed knowledge check once per day after an hour of study.

At the far end of the main room is a well-maintained stage. When the mood strikes, anyone is free to climb up and attempt to entertain, but the evenings tend to be reserved for those with actual talents. The town doesn't yet have a star entertainer, but that hasn't stopped anyone with an instrument or a skill from trying to take that spot.

To the right of the stage is the entrance to the common rooms, a series of bunks separated by wooden dividers for those not willing or able to pay the price for a private room. To the left of the stage are the stairs up to the more expensive rooms and Bon-Bon's room in the penthouse.

BB's B and B, Day 186, The Party Arrives
Almost every chair in the main room is filled, and the air is thick with the sounds of celebration and music, and the smell of food and alcohol. It appears that the party has moved from the main street to here, as townsfolk both seasoned and new share stories and laughter. Oddly enough, there is no bartender behind the bar directing this chaos, instead it seems that food and drink are levitating themselves from the bar over to be consumed at the crowded tables and booths. On stage is a three-man band that appears to be well-lubricated by the state of their playing and the number of bottles and cups by their feet. Those who seek a quiet haven from the noise and confusion of the welcome party seem to have retreated either to the booths at the edges of the room, or the peace of the Reading Room.

A small fog of sweet-smelling smoke issues from the reading room, giving some clue to at least one of the occupant's activities. A low conversation can barely be overheard if one were to stand at the door and eavesdrop.

Difficult to miss under any circumstance is a woman who can only be the proprietor, her White hair, yellow eyes and red silk robes make her stand out among the crowd as she moves from table-to-table introducing herself to the newcomers and making sure that everyone in her establishment is satisfied.

Sitting at the corner of the bar closest to the edge of the general store is an athletically-built blue-haired woman not so much bobbing her head to the music, but flailing it, sending her ponytail to whip about dangerously.

Cyrus wasted no time, pushing aside anyone who wandered into his path. He was headed to the white haired woman with a stern look on his face. If this was the guild leader for the Pathfinders, they were a lot far more worse off than he had ever thought. The stories he had heard of them all painted the same picture. They stuck their noses in where they were not welcome and, more often than not, they came back one nose less. Treasure hunters, grave robbers and tomb raiders. He had considered not even bothering and leaving those missing to their own fates but, in that moment, a familiar face floated up from his memories and Cyrus focused himself on the task at hand. "Woman," he shouted over the raucous noise of the hall, "I seek a Pathfinder venture-captain."

After tying Brutus outside the building Hecate followed Cyrus in. She arrived just in time to hear his shout. The noise and smoke were a little jarring after the relative quiet and clean air of the outdoors. Hecate was no stranger to taverns and quickly gathered her senses and made her way through the crowd.

The white-haired woman broke off her conversation with a pat on the shoulder to the seated patron and turned to yell back to Cyrus, humour in her lyrical voice, "Man! You have found a Pathfinder Venture-Captain!"

She then began sashaying her way around tables and closer to her addressor, not wanting to have to have this conversation shouting. She took in Cyrus and the approaching Hecate, and understood the situation, shouting just a little less over the din, "You seem dressed for business, newcomers. I take it you're after my lost flock? I'd been hoping that someone would heed that call. Would you join me at a booth?"

Seated alone at one of the larger booths, S'finx raised his eyes from his task to this particular yelling. In front of him were three glasses and as many forks balanced on each other in a delicate gravity puzzle. His short blonde hair stood as high and pointed as his ears, ever changing direction as he ran his fingers through it. It stood even higher as he did so now. Were these the adventurers that King Howard had promised? Was it time to meet them and get something done? Even if not, new people were always a good puzzle to be unraveled.

S'finx lifted his head to catch Bon-Bon's eye and motion that there was indeed room in his booth for the group to sit.

The white-haired woman saw the beckon and pointed the booth out before leading the others to it. She walked briskly and with purpose now that there was business to attend to. Real business.

Once everyone was seated, she pulled the curtain on the booth closed and began introductions now that there was no need to shout. She was deadly serious, now. The veneer of casual happiness affected by the gracious hostess was gone, in its place was genuine concern and a keen eye and ear.  "I am the Venture-Captain you seek,  my name is Bonnibell, but that is most often shortened,  please call me whatever you are comfortable, and I will return the courtesy. Next to me is S'finx, one of the last wave of troubleshooters, and one of the best problem-solvers we have. He knows Nowhere and the surrounding area well enough that you shouldn't become too turned around out there. Now, what are your names and what do you need? "

"Hecate Delgado, Heck for short. A direction would be a good start and any other relevant information you might like to offer, sir." Hecate introduced herself yet again. Her eyes passed between Bonnibell and S'finx as he was introduced but she did not look either of them over. Her attention stayed mostly on Bonnibell out of respect and years of training enforced habit.

Urukabar and his horse approached the B&B, leaving Orreid to sift through Gumpert's tales for anything useful.  The music and laughter and the smells of food that hit him as he approached was enticing, but also somewhat intimidating.  Between King Howard's introduction and the halfling's semi-friendly welcome, the orcish outcast had started to loosen up, socially.  But as the conversation with Gumpert turned sour, so had Urukabar's mood.  Now, approaching one of the most lively buildings he had been to in a while, Uru couldn't help but feel out of place.

He motioned to the nearby hitching post as he approached, and his stallion casually moved to stand beside Hecate's mount.  Uru's horse gave a smug snort at the way the other horse had been tied up, then settled in to wait until it's master was done with his business.

Inside, Uru entered just in time to see his new teammates disappear behind a curtain.  He walked made his way across the bar to the secluded booth, skirting the edge of the building and feeling the eyes of the entire tavern burning into his gaudy orcish armor and rough features (regardless of whether anyone was actually paying attention to him.)

He slid aside the curtain awkwardly as the humans made their introductions.  "Excuse me.  Uh, can I sit down?  My name is Urukabar, son of...well, just call me Urukabar."

Bon-Bon looked up and smiled at the arrival of the half-orc, "oh, you are just in time,  please sit down. Since you missed it, I'm Bonnibell, and this is S'finx. I was the Venture-Captain overseeing the lost team of Pathfinders, what that means is that every report and journal they filed went through me. So I do have a good idea of where they've been I only have a rough idea of where they are. So far the exploration pattern they have been using was to go straight away from town a set distance, and take a counter-clockwise turn and spiral back. ThIs expedition was to be the first in the next series of steps increasing the distance the went from town.  Twenty miles north and then a left turn, taking them roughly two days out and three days back, longer if they found something significant, but they were to report back in two weeks at most. But the problem with plans and search patterns is that by nature, that sort of thinking doesn't appeal to every Pathfinder."

She sighed, feeling like she was speaking ill of the dead, but had to remind herself that her team wasn't dead. That wasn't the way to think of them.  "S'phinx says he found out from Harmony that the crew stopped at her shop and bought supplies before setting off,  including a folding boat and dry-load alchemical cartridges.  So, if my team did go off the plan, they went somewhere expecting water, and dangerous water at that. His theory is that they were headed to the lost river, by way of the Damnable Swamp, but we'll see where the trail markers lead."

She took a deep breath, if she wanted her team back, it might mean sacrificing a Pathfinder Secret, "I think the leader, an elf named Volo might have been following his Wayfinder." She said it as if it were a terrible family secret, and as if it explained everything. When she got only blank looks in response, she explained a little further, "The Society, we have these ancient tools that get passed down, old, old magic. They look like compasses,  but they don't always point north. Sometimes they point to... other things, lost things.  Since there is no north in here, his pointed to something else since the day he arrived.  I think curiosity got the better of he and his team. "

Urukabar moved to let the brusque humans out of the booth.  Cyrus' dedication to rushing forwards with only the barest sense of what was going on was a sign of either supreme confidence, or deep, deep insecurity.  Only time would tell which.  Hecate following him was a surprise, however.  She had seemed more level-headed.

Uru, on the other hand, would prefer some idea of what he was running into.  He rubbed his temples, thinking of the best way to ask what was on his mind.  "Okay.  We've only been here a few minutes, and from everything I'd heard before stepping through the gate, this place was supposed to be safe.  So...how bad was I lied to?  What's so bad about the river and the swamp, and what's out there in the fog that might have killed your men?"

"What does it matter?" Cyrus turned a half step to glower at the orc, "Lives may hang on our next few moments and you wish to spend them with prattle of ifs and maybes? What lies beyond the edge of town is a simple answer. Danger. If that is something that frightens you, orc, then do not follow us there. This is not Cheliax. No one has a leash around your neck to keep you at heel. There is no shame in accepting your limitations."

He spread his arms and glanced around the room, "But these are the people I have been asked to look after and, with or without any of you, I intend do just that. Now, an unknown fate has befallen some of these very people and, as you can see, all are happy to accept it and forget them. So I will leave through that door, journey out into the wilderness and rescue those who can be. What stands between here and my goal is meaningless. To assume what lies ahead is to guess at things no one here truly knows. Does that satisfy your endless questions?"

S'finx raised an eyebrow at Bon-Bon. Was this ragtag group really the best that King Howard could do? What did that say about the King's idea of him??

Shaking his head, he cleared his throat. "I'm glad to see this group is well-balanced. We may survive to bring home the armor of the missing Pathfinders. I do not think they are alive."

Urukabar waited for the human to finish his rant, the same bitter amusement returning to his face as before.  "Lives hang in the next few moments?"  He replied, voice dripping with scorn.  "They've been missing for weeks.  It will likely take days to reach them, especially with only two horses between us.  Longer still if we rush out into unknown wilds without a clue how to traverse it."

"If you cared at all about finding those pathfinders, rather than satisfying your simple pride, you'd wait around while wiser heads prepared for the dangers ahead.  But as you say, this isn't Cheliax.  So feel free to run off into the wilds, clueless and useless.  I'll catch up when I'm done.  I brought a horse."

The half orc turned back to Bonnibel and S'finx, ignoring Cyrus for now.  S'finx was probably right.  The King seemed to think that the resurrection spells failing meant they were alive, but Uru was much less optimistic.  He took a second to calm himself, then continued. "Another question.  I don't mean to bombard you with them, but it just came to mind: How does one find one's bearings here?  I know compasses don't work, and that's, well..."  He made a dismissive motion with a withered hand.  Among his tribe, such things were seen as a crutch for those without actual woodsmanship.  "But what about the real signs of direction?  Is there a north star?  Does moss grow more on one side of trees?  Or are we doomed to rely solely on sun and shadows?"

Their hostess watched Cyrus and, surprisingly, Hecate leave silently, her demeanor still a little startled from S'finx's appraisal of her team's situation. Thankfully Uru asked her a question she could focus on answering instead of fretting.

"The sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Almost exactly, actually, travelling to directly above and then directly west like clockwork, no variation in the six months we've been here. Since there's no solar traverse, some of us believe that there are no seasons in Nowhere. The weather hasn't changed appreciably since we got here, either."

"Moss tends to grow more on the north and south sides of the trees than the east or west, but the stars? On nights when you can see them, they are off, not the stars we're used to, but they are constant. The moon on the other hand, is stuck in the middle of the night sky and always full, like a midnight sun. It irked me, but I eventually accepted that I could no more change the heavens here than I could on Golarion."

She thought about the other things they might need for their journey, speaking more to S'finx this time, "If you or the others need riding animals, I think Gumpert might have a few Hoorses to spare, if you can stomach dealing with him. If not there's always one of William's... herd."

"And if any of you realize that you need equipment before you leave, I'm sure Harmony at the bar there could be convinced to open her shop back up, and likely at a discount if you say you're doing a favor for me."

"Interesting."  Uru took a second to absorb what he was being told.  No seasons, no weather, no change in the stars.  Nowhere was seeming less and less like a world and more like a...mock-up.  Like some sort of stage for rituals and storytelling.  Or the sheltered garden where Uru's old master grew his poisons and herbs, with it's magical light to grow such things indoors.  Which raised the question: were the people of this expedition actors, or simply invading vermin?

But none of this was immediately important, save for it's use in navigation.  He returned to his earlier question, seemingly lost in Cyrus' outburst.  "Interesting.  And the path you think they took, through the Damnable Swamp to the Lost River.  The names are, uh...They don't sound welcoming."

Bon-Bon waved a hand in the air to dismiss the half-orc's fears, "Oh, we have a tradition in Nowhere. The person who touches something first gets to name it. The Lost river was named for the Shoe that Borg, one of my Pathfinders, Lost in it. The Damnable swamp was named when everyone decided to forcefully give Volo naming rights ... by throwing him in. So far we've yet to actually find anything out there that would attack unprovoked. Even the Walves avoid humanoids and would rather hunt Alk or Raybbits. Greenbough, another of my Pathfinders, even managed to convince a Walf to become his travelling companion."

S'phinx picked the top glass off of this careful stack and swirled its amber contents. "That is not to say that all is safe here. This place is not unlike the world on the other side of the door. We cannot assume that everything is out to kill us, or that everything is out to help us. We are still finding the balance here." He looked up to Urukabar with a wide grin. "And, hey, those names make for the starts of good stories. And that's why we're all here- to solve the puzzles, to make the stories that will be told forever. Right Bon?"

Uru couldn't help but share S'finx's grin.  Urukabar didn't really see things in terms of riddles and stories, but the half-elf's thirst for adventure was palpable and infectious.  It reminded him of why he'd fled his home and journeyed into human lands.  After all, this strange and unnatural place held more interesting people than Urukabar had ever met in his homeland.

"Speaking of which, we should start our search before Cyrus wanders off and we have to find him as well." The Shaman stood up, edging out of the booth.  "S'finx.  From the sounds of it, you're coming too?  Do you have a mount of your own, or do we need to find one?
