The Amazing Avengers #3: "...What So Proudly Hated"

The creature that knocked She-Hulk back with its energy barrage lets forth a second volley, with blasts exploding around the dazed Avenger and the stairs. A number of the shots go wide, laying waste to the upper staircase and the balcony overlooking the foyer, and as the energy starts to dissipate and pieces from the explosions of ravaged home furnishings begin to settle, from a cloud of dark-creature energy in the unlit darkness, a form unfurls, growing as it rises from the dark mist, until its body overtakes the landing at the top of the stairs then the entire balcony, then overcoming the area to reach beyond it and into the room where the heroes and creatures have assembled. Free of the dark mist, a massive, unearthly dragon reveals itself atop the stairs.

It has a muscular body with a short, wide tail and neck. Its scales are umber, getting much thicker on its tail. It has long, thick limbs with six splayed digits on each foot that end in blunt claws, and fanlike wings that stretch between its forelimbs and the end of its tail. Its head is narrow and it has a tiny mouth. It has hooded eyes that are the color of varnished wood. This dragon has huge holes for ears. Bladelike bony plates sprout from its chin. Bony knobs surround its nostrils.

As it unfurls, flanked by quickly-spreading fires on both sides, it lets out a body-shaking roar -- "RRRRRRRRRAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!" -- then spreads its wings, extends its tail, and opens its jaws wide, displaying a hungry mouth full of the sharpest teeth, and its clawed hands reach out to rend all those before it.

The brief quiet gave Carol a moment to collect herself after punching Iron Man's missles. Now Jen's compromised, and the one responsible is now showing itself, and probably not in its natural form.

Carol hates these kind of fights since she's better at punching than telepathic crap. But, whatever it is, is making a big show of things...

Carol will attempt to stand her ground.

Carol stands her ground, curious as to what this thing is trying to accomplish. However, she sees Sofen head for the ceiling and through, might mean one of two things: either there's something involved with the fight up there to deal with, or she's making a break for it. Carol mentally sighs, having to give Sofen the benefit of the doubt. So, she needs to make sure the "dragon" occupied.

Carol is going to blast the stairs the dragon is "atop" to create the asset "unsure footing"

3 Opportunities (available first to Captain Marvel; not to be used with current reaction rolls)

Captain Marvel takes the other side of the room from where the creature is blasting away at (or toward) She-Hulk and unleashes her own barrage in the same direction. Her energy blasts collide not with the roaring dragon on the balcony but the stairs below it, obliterating much of the steps in short order. She-Hulk falls through the resulting explosion, rising at ground level once the blasts clear, then stands atop a fresh pile of debris, though stacked enough that she is halfway near the balcony anyway, with the raging fire, now fully entering the foyer, behind her. She takes the same stance as on the stairs, standing fully but not in a battle-ready stance, and looking into whatever distance there is.

And yet, the dragon is not misplaced, standing its ground with its roaring, yawning maw and yearning claws, stretching out to easily access any point in the room, but keeping its place, as it sits on the balcony on the second level more than the stairs that now lie in wreckage and splinters.

The Amazing Avengers #3: "...What So Proudly Hated"

As the dragon roared and made its crashing landing Justice felt a pang of fear in his hear. This was a real live dragon... a creature of myth in their midst.

He could feel the pressure on his mind growing stronger and stronger, someone or something was trying to creep into his mind turn him into a puppet like it did his friends he wanted this whole infernal place to burn... no he wanted to get away.

Than he remembered he was an Avenger, he was not a weakling, his force field flared up in bright purple taking the vague shape of an armor around the young hero. He will not break nor will he flee, he was Avenger and while he may not be able to stop those monsters he would sure as hell make sure they would pay a bloody price for their victory.

Strong with resolve he did not feel any fear only determination. He had to try to break this cursed illusion, using his Telekinesis he reached out but this time he did not tried to touch a thing but a concept, he tried to reach with his mental power and shake the illusions that surrounded the dragon and the demons forcing more and more powers into the constructs of the illusions even without seeing what he was doing, it was a tricky ordeal he had never performed before and with luck never again.

Though his insides feel like they are crushed inside his body, Justice steps up against the monstrous dragon, using his mental powers to pull apart the horrible creature. His aim is vague, not focused on a particular task in relation to the dragon, and so it makes no physical effect against the opponent. The dragon is again unmoved, unaffected by the tiny morsels in front of it, and it waves its head to and fro in search of a victim to tear apart. "RRRRRRRRRAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!"

"This -- this has to end," comes a metallic voice too weak to rise above the din. "And it's going to end now!" Iron Man rockets from the back of the room, straight toward the head of the dragon. The repulsors blasting from the bottom of his boots light up the area as he shuttles up toward the monstrosity dominating the space, but unfortunately, his most immediate trajectory and trust in a teammate comes within She-Hulk's mighty reach. "Jen!" his tinny voice cries. "Out of the wa -- !" But is cut off by a wallop from the jade giantess -- krACCCKKK! -- that breaks the straight line of the armored Avenger's flight from right into She-Hulk's range and away, into the dark mist surrounding the immense monster and disappears directly into the thing's huge, deadly mouth!

Fierce Brute adds d6 to Doom Pool
Dark Basilisk adds d6 to Doom Pool
Dark figure/dragon spends 2d8 and 2d6 from Doom Pool

The dragon roars around the room, throwing its head back and forth, snapping its massive jaws as it decides upon its prey. For each hero, its massive, toothed mouth comes within inches of closing over their heads, then pulls back at the last instant to find another. The creature that attacked Iron Man creates a ball of dark energy that appears on the face of the dragon then falls to the floor and shatters.

A burst of light flashes within the body of the dragon. Then the dragon disappears in the same dark mist from which it appeared. The monster's image and sounds are instantly gone.

"Ah," a voice comes from the landing, in the center of what would have been the dragon's body. "You finally decided to figure it out."

The dark mists around the room dissipate, so completely that even lingering clouds are gone as quickly. In place of the dark creatures on the landing above the destroyed stairs, Bishop and Nightcrawler appear on one side, with Ms. Marvel (in her original costume) on the other. Iron Man lies slumped against the back wall of the landing, a massive dent in the side of his helmet. On the pile of debris that was once the mansion's stairs is She-Hulk, once the green-eyed creature, staring blankly over the foyer. A young man in a very tech-inferring costume, revealed as the purple-eyed creature, and Captain Marvel, revealed as the blue-eyed creature, stand at the ready. Black Widow lies prone on one side of the room while Rogue lies still on the other, with an unconscious Toad somewhere between them, all amidst the wreckage of the front of the mansion. The mansion is still in shambles but the illusions are gone and everything appears clear once more. In the back of the place, fires still rage, coming closer.

The last mists to part are those around the figure on the landing, between those members of the X-Men and Ms. Marvel. It is revealed to be a man, old enough to have to hunch forward as he stands, wearing a long, brown jacket over a brown suit, and a natty inverness cape around his shoulders. His black & gray hair is greasy and matted against his head, a line of facial hair traces from the sides of his head to over his upper lip, and the features of his face seem ancient enough to sag off to the floor. "At last you have discovered me, heroes," he drawls. His sleepy eyes betray no emotion. "And I surrender." He holds out his wrists.

"No"

The mansion was on fire.  Many of his team mates were seriously injured, and he didn't know yet if they were going to pull through or not.  And the man who was responsible for all the mayhem offered them his hands in a pitiful attempt to convince them to spare him his life.

"No"
Reaching down, he pulled the edged combat knife from a sheath wrapped around his shin. It was time to end this threat - for good.

Justice was panting, he was aching all over and he had a headache so severe he was sure his head would split in two if he shook it too vigorously.

The demons and fiends turned to be X-men, he felt relief there were no more demons but possible allies.

The man? thing whatever it was that played them so well against each other, he was surrendering... it felt wrong to accept his surrender, part of a larger play but until proven otherwise accepting it was the right thing to do.

When one of the X-men pulled a knife and was about to deal with a surrendering prisoner, Justice action seemed painfully clear.

His body was engulf with purple force as he moved between Bishop and the prisoner "This man, no matter how vile had surrendered. We do not harm prisoners." he said in a strong voice, to back it up dozens of shards started to glow purple and lifted in the air. If Bishop had a knife, Justice had two scores of knives ready.

There was a glint of excitement in Bishop's eyes when the stranger threatened him with violence.  He had no intention of backing down; the so called 'prisoner' was malevolent.  A swift death was too good for him.   He already made up his mind about meeting the challenger head on, and his own body started to crackle with energy in readiness for an impending assault.

He couldn't get on with it.

Not out of fear of the hero, or clemency toward the villain.  He needed the x-men, and judging from the reaction of both the ice-man and the night-crawler, starting a fight now might endanger his real mission. And that he could not allow.

Grunting as he accepted he won't be getting his way this time, he returned his knife back to its sheath, then turned his back and proceeded to leap from the landing back down to the foyer.  Like the x-man said; there were people wounded, and getting them out to safety was a higher priority.

With a wave of his hands he dismissed the force field and allowed the flock of knifes to clattered to the ground.

Cords of purple power slithered toward the "prisoner" binding him tightly "Now, who the hell are you and what is the reason behind this deadly charade?"

As Nightcrawler teleports away in a cloud of brimstone, with a stench that was once peppermint but now nauseating sulfur, Iron Man, slumped against the wall, begins to stir. The ice that had penetrated his defenses has already melted, leaving a puddle in his lap.

The fire from the back of the room has now fully entered the foyer. Half of the room has, from within and without, collapsed, leaving the front section of the space filled with debris and whatever crashed down from above in the wave -- or waves -- of destruction. On the rear side of the room, the fire rages, now fully in the area, and cutting off entry into the hallways from which the once-creatures/now-X-Men came. Neither way offers a form of escape.

Spend d8 from Doom Pool to step up Indoor Fire Scene Complication to d10

The man, calm despite the fire reaching the landing on which they stand, looks at Justice. "Apparently my reputation does not precede me. I am the Mastermind, the most powerful mutant manipulator of illusions." He smirks and puts a hand on his hip. "As for what I'm doing, isn't it obvious?"

Mastermind steps up die from Doom Pool

She-Hulk, previously looking blankly over the scene when she wasn’t pounding those who tried to pass by her, looks up at the landing from her place on top of the pile of wrecked stairs. Her brow furrows just slightly, but her eyes remain unfocused. It is a distance between where she is and the landing but nothing her mighty muscles could not handle with minimal effort. Slowly, she puts her hands behind her and leans forward in a squat.

Mastermind was smart and cunning and with great mental powers but he underestimate young Justice.

Justice believed that once the man surrendered he should be treated humanly but that did not meant he had turned a blind eye to the man abilities.

The moment he felt the slimy mental finger trying to crawl into his mind Justice acted. He already held Mastermind in his telekinetic grasp so it was easy levitating the villain. Once airborne it was just the mater of lamming him repeatedly into the wall until Justice felt the mental pressure ease.

That didn't mean, however, that he would actively try to SAVE their lives.  If the mansion comes burning down on top of them; well - that's just karma.

Bishop makes his way searching through the wreckage of the foyer for any survivors, stepping over the bodies of those he knew to be evil. The mutant steps around the debris, with his back to the landing above and, below it, the demolished stairs. On those stairs stood She-Hulk, a giantess whose physical strength could not be matched even remotely by anyone present, and who the mutant had attacked numerous times only moments ago. She may not have made the leap she had seemed to intend, and her silence may have removed her from the notice of the others, but she kept her place in the room.

Now, She-Hulk has stepped away from those stairs. Bishop feels a creeping shadow come over him fully, and when he turns around, he faces the full height of the powerful, emerald Avenger looming over him, saying nothing, staring down at him.
