The Amazing Avengers #3: "...What So Proudly Hated"

What were once the windows in the front of the mansion have been gone, crushed under the wreckage that has become that side of the building, leaving little light coming into the room, providing more shadows and pools of darkness than illumination. From one of those pool comes a dark figure, folding into the space from the murk. It seems humanoid, but is surrounded by swirling clouds, as if pulling any light in the room into itself to leave its immediate surroundings a color black as pitch. Its slender body shifts and slides as it moves, as if it were a wiry sinister funambulist. Its eyes glow purple as it looks over the assembled group in the room. At the same time, the space is suddenly overwhelmed with the scent of peppermint.

Spend d10 from Doom Pool to add Shadowy Demon

Then light floods the room when the wreckage of what was once the entrance to the mansion begins to open, the debris lifting from the bottom up, and Justice and She-Hulk are revealed to enter from the outside. They enter near the limp body of the Black Widow, laying prone on the floor among the rubble.

Mystique gives d10 to the Doom Pool

The Amazing Avengers #3: "...What So Proudly Hated"

As Justice and She-Hulk enter the foyer, so too does another combatant: a figure looking much like the demon that appeared in the center of the rough circle made by Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, the two from outside, and, squatting on the floor, Toad, with the swirling darkness wrapped around it and with sinister eyes glowing green, coming from the far hallway, hovering a foot above the floor. This violent wraith quickly takes in the scene then fully enters the room, leading with its fist.

Spend d8 from Doom Pool to add Violent Wraith

As Pyro gurgles with laughter under Captain Marvel’s fists and the space around them simmers with fires waiting to either die or catch for additional damage, a figure appears across the room, from the far hallway. It is another mysterious figure, the others of which being unknown to the captain but now facing one of them in all its dark glory. As the darkness moves around it in a compressed cloud, the figure holds out its hands, which crackle with electricity. Its eyes glow intense and white. A noise comes from its head, a sound like a wet scraping, but words are alien and indiscernible. It leans forward, focused more on the combatants in the room rather than a concern for the fire around them.

Spend d8 from Doom Pool to add Electrified Specter

Doom Pool: d6, 4d8, 3d10, d12 -d8 -d8 = d6, 2d8, 3d10, d12

With Pyro prone, Carol can concentrate on damage control. There's no reason to let the mansion burn, this Avengers team needs to stop letting everything get destroyed. Not this time.

And as Carol concentrates and takes the energy from the extant flames into her body, she feels other energies around her and she knows things are going to get worse.

Carol is going to put out the flames completely.

The Amazing Avengers #3: "...What So Proudly Hated"

Just as She-Hulk enters the foyer fully from the hole in the mansion's wreckage that Justice has created, the jade giantess stumbles, hesitates, looks around with her face drawn in confusion as if she had never seen the interior of a building or the combatants that she could call her a teammate, and her body shakes. She towers over the Black Widow's prone body, close enough to crush it should the mighty She-Hulk fall.

At the same moment, Iron Man careens and nearly drops to the floor on top of Toad but catches himself, clutching his head when he comes back up, making no sound but the clacking of his armored limbs against his body.

With the presence of the infernal creatures in the room, the interior grows darker, even with part of the area opened to let in sunlight and the rest of the team. The wraith that just entered the foyer may have paused when it was in the hallway but now charges in, flying at full-force and leading with its fist. With Iron Man hunched over, the most immediate active target is Ms. Marvel, who now has the figure, trailing wisps of dark ether behind it as it flies at full velocity toward the female Thunderbolt, intending to plant a fist in her face, immaterial or otherwise. It makes a sound like a shriek and attacks!

Toad, crouching on the floor, seems oblivious of the happenings in the room, only looking around frantically after casting his goggles aside, and striking randomly with his grotesque but dangerous tongue. The body part used as a weapon whips around the room, either trying to sense what is going on around him or to keep any opponents away, not hitting anyone yet, but also destroying more of the mansion's property, what little is left undamaged. One strike whips around, blasting a support behind him, then the wall creaks, showing that there might be more damage to the building than could have been inferred before, and perhaps teetering precariously before it all comes crashing down.

The shadowy demon surveys the inhabitants of the room, then a growl to upset the hardest stomach emanates from it before it turns to the Toad and pounces. The villain on the floor, still shaking his head and looking around, does not witness the demon until the figure is on top of him, with the dark smoke around the demon encircling both of them in short order. Toad has only time to yelp -- "Ulp!" -- before the demon pushes them both into the darkest corner of the room, and in a cloud of smoke that dissipates as quickly as it appears, they are both gone.

Justice eyes grew wide as the shadowy demon took toad. This was turning to be a very surreal scene with demons and hell sipping into earth.

He just wanted to bolt and run away from this place of evil but how could he do that, not when She-Hulk and Ironman, his two icons, were watching him.

Instead he marshaled his shaken nerves and closed his eyes as he motion forward with his hands. Purple glow surrounded Black Widow body as Justice covered her with a sparkling force field before he gently took her body and tried to sneak it away from the foyer toward his position.

Justice uses his considerably telekinetic abilities to lift the Black Widow, as gently as possible, a distance off the ground to transport her to a safer place but is suddenly faced with the dilemma of where that could be, in a room that is becoming a maelstrom of chaos in all corners. As he pauses, the ghastly tongue of the suspended Toad whips around, hitting a lighting fixture, sending it crashing to the floor, pulling with it other debris from the ceiling. The destruction is enough to disrupt Justice' concentration, obscure his line of sight, and add to the wreckage in the room. The body of the Black Widow falls back to the floor, hitting with a noticeable thud. The fact that she could be harmed further is only one more threat among many in this environment of discord.

Ms. Marvel narrowed her gaze as the shadowy creature erupted towards her. While the monster might not affect her out-of-phase form, Karla selected not to chance it. Her body was infused with powerful photonic energy--pure light--and she did not want to find out that this shadow demon's darkness somehow cancelled that out. Sofen shuddered to think what fresh hell happened if that were to happen.

Instead, the new Ms. Marvel slipped effortlessly into the floor, intangibly drifting downwards just as the shadowy creature reached her. Karla thanked her quick thinking, then moved quickly towards the general direction of where the demon first manifested. She rose up into the room once again, light dancing across her exposed skin.

"Stark, what's the plan?" demanded Sofen, as she fired a scattered, careless blast towards the shadow demon!

Carol suddenly notices the Electrified Specter across the room. Things that aren't making sense are suddenly making as much sense as it can. This whole battle, possibly this entire situation has been something less than and more than it seems.

The creature sends an arc of electricity shaped power straight at Carol. Carol lets the blast hit her. "Let's see what this energy really is." She thinks.

Purple aura surrounded Toad, what was his role here? it did not matter he was not one of the team hence the enemy. The nearly blinded Toad flew into the air, purple tendril pulling his elastic tongue and making it like a snare to slither around the rest of the demonic beings and trap them.

Meanwhile Justice lifted his hands summoning more purple tendrils that encased the demons in a cage made of fleshy tongue and telekinetic force.

_______________________________
Ms. Marvel saw the shadow's attack coming from a mile away. Karla slipped further out of sync with the local timespace, shimmering with golden light as she slipped well past the shadow demon's grasp.

Karla Sofen was not a kind woman. When hard times came calling, Karla was a survivor--but she had no sympathy for the weak or naive. The world was a tough, unforgiving place, and it had forged Sofen into an ever-composed, self-serving hardcase.

The Moonstone had been a game-changer. Ever since she coaxed it from Lloyd Blochs, the intoxicating power the coursed through her body became an important constant. Never again would she be vulnerable or dependent on others.

To some degree, Barton changed everything. The Thunderbolts had been a scam at first. Even when Melissa and Eric and Abe all decided to give heroics an honest go, Karla had hung on in the hopes of steering the Thunderbolts towards some eventual score. When Hawkeye took the others under his wing, though, her subtle command of the others slipped from her grasp.

She couldn't lie to herself: Clint's passion for fighting the good fight affected her, too. Even now, she was straddled between lives. Karla had been a high-end operator in the supervillain set. She had earned some serious clout as a Thunderbolt, too. And once again, Clint vouched for her to join the Avengers.

One of her biggest detractors was now bleeding out on the floor. Ms. Marvel certainly had no love lost for Natasha, but dying this way was beneath the Russian superspy. The Moonstone thrummed in her chest, vibrating at a powerful frequency as it guided her.

"Don't be an idiot, Marvel Boy" teased Karla. Ms. Marvel swept up the Black Widow in her arms. "We fall back. We don't know the territory--" she silently cursed herself for reciting a Barton quote, "--which means we can't win against people who do. Cover our escape, kid, but this is not the time to be a hero. We pull back, regroup, figure out a different play."

Karla did not wait for a response, instead turning to get the Widow out of danger. Ms. Marvel decided the running in an evasive pattern was better than the possibility of further harming the Avenger in her arms in high-speed flight.

The Toad twists and wriggles in the air as he is tossed about by Justice's telekinesis, then the dark creature's tendrils wrap tight around him. The mutant struggles for air as he is ensnared, his engorged tongue, used as an offensive tool by Justice to aid in entangled the creatures in the room, blocking his mouth. As the coils snake around him, Toad is just barely able to gasp: "You foolth! Don't you thee who ith -- " before his body and face and mouth are engulfed by the dark tendrils and mist.
