The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

The most horrible evil on the entire planet lies dormant, as always, but only just so.  Machinations hide just below the surface until the time when that vileness rises to grasp the victory to which it claims entitlement.  When is that time?  Far too soon.

Fortunately for the inhabitants of that planet, if not the universe, there are valiant and noble heroes that rise to resist those villains.  It will not be easy and this may be their most formidable challenge yet but they will never stop until that evil is vanquished.  But that evil, also, will not stop, until it meets a greater force.  This, now, is that story.

The Amazing Avengers #1: "...By the Dawn's Evil Glare"

So often the greatest epics begin from the humblest beginnings.

The near-legendary hero known as Hawkeye has often been known as the loosest cannon of the Avengers but he has also been one of the most loyal. His dedication is known far and wide to a team that has changed over a great many years. The current incarnation is not commonly known to the public, as the Avengers have not had need to handle many global emergencies of late. It's not that the Avengers are not present in some form, it's just that they are not so necessary. A strange sort of calm has settled over the world this summer, a status that would seem odd if anyone had been more aware of it. As it is, life has continued for everyone without a particular threat. But that does not mean that danger is not present, that perhaps it is just not above the surface, and it certainly does not promise that there is not a great threat just over a near horizon. But the grandest sagas must take one event at a time, and there must be an inciting incident, perhaps one that is plain to the eye, or perhaps one that has been buried in the past, forgotten or not realized in the first place, but not minimizing its great importance.

Hawkeye has called together a patchwork of heroes to investigate and urgently shut down a Hydra base at the docks on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. A number of champions have taken the call, whether they be Avengers or otherwise. This combination of heroes, numbering perhaps as many as dozen, have not had cause to come together in the past but their teamwork and dedication to each other, as well as to the mighty name of the Avengers, could now be the thing that will allow them to triumph, if not simply just to survive to see another adventure.

Hercules was first to arrive at the location, despite not knowing exactly where he was meant to go.  The god was nearby and the location that Hawkeye inferred was not the most difficult to find: It's not a run-down part of town but it's certainly empty, even in this early, late June evening. A lot of buildings are boarded-up and uninteresting to tourists, despite their proximity to the Brooklyn Bridge. There is no one else up and down the shadowy street, just the occasional car down FDR, but Hercules found the one building with a few fellows in leather jackets smoking outside. The building does not look occupied but it's the only activity in the area.
Hercules strode up to the building and bellowed, "Ho, fellows! Hercules is here! Now where is my compatriot?" then glanced around to see if Hawkeye was on the scene as well.
The three very average-looking men gazed at him in something like surprise and disbelief but said nothing. The one to the side reached into his leather jacket then halted. The one in the back, closest to the building, raised his arm and spoke into his cuff, too quietly to hear. The only movement from the one in front, the one closest to Hercules, was the plume of smoke coming from the cigarette in the side of his mouth.
Hercules's brows knitted together and a frown twisted his beard. "Mortals, the son of Zeus has addressed you! Be warned, I brook no disrespect. Find your tongues and answer!"
None of the three men moved a hair. Their faces were still pulled blank with no expression but maybe the faintest disbelief. The cigarette in the front guy's mouth wavered just a bit as he spoke. "Uh...," he mutters. "Hail Hydra?"
A ferocious grin split Hercules' face. "That, mortal, was a poor choice of words indeed!" Then he reached a beefy hand for the man's jacket front.
Little does Hercules know that there is another figure lurking in the shadows, ready to strike. Is it friend... or foe?

Starting Doom Pool: 2d6
Scene Distinctions: DOWNTOWN AT NIGHT, WAREHOUSE ENTRANCE UNDER FDR DRIVE, EMPTY STREETS.

Initiative:
Hercules
Iron Fist
Hydra Guard A (with the cigarette)
Hydra Guard B (with the hand in jacket)
Hydra Guard C (with the cuff)

First Action: Hercules.
Put together your dice pool. Let me see your dice pool before you roll it. Post it as you normally would and I'll approve it then you can roll. You won't have to do this every time -- you can post your dice pools and roll results together when you take your turn, but just as we're starting out and everyone is getting used to the format and we have some players who have never played the game before, I'd like to look over dice pool intentions before they become set in stone. I could also catch any dice you might have missed to include.

End the post with whose reaction will need to roll for your action then pick the next character to go. For the next player, you might want to wait until the first action is resolved, though I don't honestly know how best that would play out -- the next turn going regardless of the outcome of the action or waiting for it.

The rest of the heroes have not yet arrived to the scene. The Human Torch and Spider-Man are close. For others, please reply to private messages to resolve events to set up characters and get them to the location.

Hercules scoops the HYDRA agent before him, draws his arm back, and pitches the man into the other two. "I accept your surrender," he says magnanimously, "for even now my fair companions must be pining away to nothing in my absence."

I'm going with:

Solo d10
Party Animal d4 -- Hercules has had a few, and his head might not exactly be in the game
Area Attack (3 targets) 2d6
Godlike Strength d12
Combat Expert d8

... gaining +1 PP for using the d4 and keeping three effect dice for Area Attack.

Status: PS:00 ES:00 MS:00 PP: 1 XP:00

edited to add: This will require reactions from all three agents.

01:17, Today: Hercules rolled 2,8,2,8,2 using d12,d10,d8,2d6,d4 with rolls of 2,8,2,5,3,2.  HYDRA bowling.

Okay, I'm taking the d10 (8) and the d6 (5) for my total, 13.

I'll use the d12, the d8, and one of the d6 for my effect dice. The d12 goes to Guard A since he'll get the brunt of the impact, the d8 to Guard B, and the d6 to Guard C.

Guard B can go next.

The lead Hydra guard, still reeling from a real-life hero walking right up to him, is now reeling from being lifted from his feet and thrown into his compatriots. He considers that every bone in his body has been broken and his vision starts to tunnel.

Like a good soldier, the other Hydra guard would have drawn his weapon and viciously attacked the hero if he had only been given the order. Now he's trying to literally catch the fool that was chosen to head this squad and feels like his lungs are broken and he's on the ground. That moron is barely moving so maybe it's time to take the initiative and matters into his own hands and deal with this hero himself.

Since they already seem rattled, I'll spend the PP to  use Guard A's opportunity to create a d10 Stunt for my Menace Expert ability. Call it No One Said We Had to Fight a God!

I'll save my other PP, so I won't be activating any other opportunities just yet.

Reaction to Hercules's Area Attack, Total: 13; Effect: d6, happening simultaneously with attacks to Hydra Guards A & B:
Team    d8 +
Street-Level Flunkie (already called in an alert so hopefully help will be here soon)    d4 +
(+d6 to Doom Pool)
Hydra Armor    d6

Hydra Guard C rolled 3,2,4 using d8,d4,d6 ((3,2,4)). (They roll like Hydra goons) Total: 6, Effect: d6 + 1 Step, extraordinary success - 1 Step, higher Effect die

Hydra Guard A takes d6 physical stress

Doom Pool: 4d6 + d6

Status: PS:d6 ES:00 MS:00

Staying in the back has its advantages. The third guard almost dodged the next guard falling into him. He got hit pretty hard in his side but clearly not as bad as the other two. He followed his orders -- calling in anything out of the ordinary, and surely this counts -- so hopefully the others will show soon and this doesn't turn into more pain.

No One Said We Had to Fight a God! (Menace) d10 Stunt is approved.

The realization that they might be fighting not just a hero, not just an Avenger, but a god is dawning on the three Hydra guards. Too bad it's not dawning fast enough for them to flee.

Forget this, he thinks. Forget this completely. That order isn't coming fast enough. Von Strucker would approve of taking the initiative and eliminating an imminent threat. He takes his trusted sidearm from his jacket pocket and aims it at the hero, just as he intended when this medieval buffoon walked up, then pulls the trigger. And that can't possibly be the real Hercules, could it?

Attack on Hercules with Kirby-like pistol:
Team d8 +
Goon (making a name for himself by taking out a hero)    d8 +
Small Arms d6

Hydra Guard B rolled 8,2,3 using d8,d8,d6 ((8,2,3)).

Total: 11, Effect: d8.

Status: PS:d8 ES:00 MS:00

Reaction Needed: Hercules, to Hydra Guard B attack
Next: Hydra Guard C

Doom Pool: 5d6

A blast zips from the pistol -- betraying its modest size -- and pelts Hercules square in his chest.

Well, the blast certainly got Hercules's attention. Of course, the guard now has a very large and angry Olympian bearing down on him, seemingly unfazed by the blast...

Solo d10
Prince of Power d8
Superhuman Durability d10
Combat Expert d8

23:22, Today: Hercules rolled 10,3,2,7 using d10,d10,d8,d8.

Total 17, Effect d10.

Since I beat his roll by over 5, I'll spend my other PP to use my d10 as an effect to create d10 emotional stress on him.

Status: PS:00 ES:00 MS:00 PP: 0 XP:00

Seeing the blast zim off of the hero's chest would normally send an assailant cowering away but instead it's only strengthened the resolve of the third guard. Their wills and abilities have been honed steel-hard after their Hydra training, after all. Maybe if they all shoot at this guy, they can take him down.

Attack on Hercules with pistol:
Team d8 +
Follower (mimicking the other guard)    d8 +
Small Arms d6

Hydra Guard C rolled 3,3,1 using d8,d8,d6 ((3,3,1)).

Total: 6, Effect: d4

Status: PS:d6 ES:00 MS:00

Reaction Needed: Hercules, to Hydra Guard C attack
Next: Hydra Guard A

Doom Pool: 5d6
