Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

Quick Note, Shira's Trooper is now incapacitated and out of this combat.

Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Shiras Trooper, rolled 13 using 3 dice with the WEG Classic system ((3,6,{Wild}4)).

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

As the old doctor watched the battle, he wracked his logic circuits for some way to be useful to his companions.   It simply wasn't in his programming to not render any assistance of which he was capable.  He attempted to calculate the distance between the Stormtroopers and himself.  Perhaps, if they were within the limits of his bio scanners, he might be able to help refine their targeting vectors.  He could give them verbal instructions IF he could manage a lock on their opponents.  He decided it was worth a try.  TwoOneBee transmitted a binary message  to DeeJay, then peeked out from his hiding place to try and acquire a line of sight to aim his sensors.

Great Maker I hope this works, he thought.

OOC:  TwoOneBee will attempt to use his sensors to help his friends aim.  He is making himself vulnerable to do so.  I'm not sure my sensors have that sort of range. If I need to make a sensor roll let me know :-)

Post Scriptum:  After rereading the TwoOneBee units standard equipment, it appears he is limited to his photoreceptors and audio receptors, unless more a sophisticated sensor suite comes with his analytical computer.  He may still be able to call adjustments for any trooper he can visually see and will do so if it is at all beneficial.

While Shira benefited from 'Bee's direction, but her blaster shots became less effective as she shied away from incoming fire.

00:24, Today: Shira rolled 8 using 4 dice with the WEG Classic system.  Blaster shot.

00:24, Today: Shira rolled 27 using 5 dice with the WEG Classic system.  Damage.

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

It took time and effort but eventually the stormtroopers were dispatched with no further damage to the heroes.   A few made delicious Y-Wing fodder.

"Well done." T-3PO said to TwoOneBee.  The newcomer had recognized the medical droid's capacity to help win this fight.  Even indirectly and by proxy, it was something for a medical droid to actually fight.  Via a quick binary burst, DeeJay admitted that T-3PO's tone contained some actual amid the sarcasm.  She would have known, recognizing nuance was one of her fundamental programs.

As they left, Ali saluted the dead Y-Wing pilot.  He had still done some good after death, even if just by blind luck.

Blissex began to pick up his pace as they left.  He had a schoolboy's enthusiasm and soon that was rewarded as the crew entered a large hangar bay.  "This is our way out.  The AT-STs are one this level but the shuttles will be on the level below.  The vehicle elevator would be the best way down."

The bare stars could be seen through the hangar force-fields.  It was a tonic to see something besides the choking confinement of Starfall.  In a few moments, they might be off of this bomb in denial.

But years of hard luck was the Rebel lot and Ali was a little suspicious.  She tried to open one of the closed blast doors just behind them in the corridor they had just escaped from.  It didn't open, neither did another.   By the odds, one should have.

"I think we have been guided here even though it was where we wanted to be..." She said hesitantly.

OOC:  I've made a GM decision and just plain pushed past the current encounter.  If this was a mistake, I apologize.  But IMO the encounter was dragging even at its best.

We are now effectively in the last part of this adventure.  You are almost home free.  But it can't be that easy, can it?

Shira was excited after the fight, but she sniffled as Ali saluted the fallen Y-wing pilot. "He must have been a brave man."

She gasped at seeing the starfield. "Oh! We're almost out and safe!"

She hoped from foot to foot nervously at Ali's words. "You think it's a trap, Ali?"

Before getting out of the Y-Wing, Celes patted the deceased pilot on the shoulder (and his co-pilot, if he had one).

"Everything's a trap until it isn't." Celes scanned her eyes across the hangar, looking for active threats, security cameras, and the hangar bay controls.

"Doctor Blissex, how many entrances are there to this place?"

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

In answer to Celes' question, Blissex said that there was the vehicle lift (now an open shaft), various corridors and the sheer black emptiness of Space itself as exits to the hanger.   The corridors that could be seen were closed with blast doors, quite atypical for these circumstances.  The hangar forcefield held the void back or, more accurately, the air in.

Hard-bitten Rebels that they were, the veterans used to joke that they wore two chronometers.  They could never trust just one first impression.

"I've got a bad feeling about--" Ali said to Celes and Shira.

A series of blaster bolts impacted the deck plates around the party.  The white domes of troopers helmets could now be seen peeping up from the cover of containers and other equipment.  It was a warning.  No one would miss that many times, not even stormtroopers.

"--this." Ali said, not at all pleased to be right.

Wisps of tactical smoke, the kind that worked on organic eyes but not trooper helmets, began to waft into the hanger.

"Why aren't they just massacring us?"  Thuraya asked.

The answer rose up like a closing jaw.  The head of an AT-ST rose up out of the vehicle bay, powered by the lift below.

"Hello, my stubborn Rebel Scum.  Time for your final lesson."  Captain Kolaff's now-familiar boomed from the scout walker's loudspeakers...

OOC:  The map I have for this encounter is not the best and rather unclear so I am dealing with the number of exits in an abstract manner.  So assume that Celes has a superb tactical awareness of the situation and will use that to advantage.   I won't let her make a mistake for my lack of information.

I finally got to say the line! :-)

Kolaff has you dead to rights.   That he hasn't had you all killed speaks to a very well-groomed ego...

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

The doctor was a practical droid.  They'd walked straight into a very neatly laid trap and were quite effectively surrounded.  TwoOneBee dealt in facts, statistics and data were at the core of his programming.  Calculating risk and deducing the most logical course of action were second nature to him.  His hopes swiftly dwindled, however, with each storm trooper he counted aiming a blaster in their direction.

Odds of 50 to 1: Perhaps we can appear to surrender and then attempt an escape utilizing a suitable distraction, he reasoned.

Then the smoke began to billow through the hanger, making it nearly impossible for his organic companions to see, and very difficult for droids who were not designed to navigate in such conditions.

Odds of 500 to 1: Well...if we can elude our pursuers and we droids can scan for the source of the smoke we maybe be able to...

Then the At-ST rose up, like some indomitable Goliath before them, and the Imperial captain gloated from his high seat above them.  TwoOneBee gazed around at his friends, his family, and realized the odds were so astronomically opposed to their success as to be almost incalculable.

"It has been an honour to know, and to serve you all,"
he said as he raised his durasteel arms in the universal gesture of submission.

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

Those who breathed swallowed grimly. They also nodded in spare salute to TwoOneBee. This just might be it, the final moment before becoming one with the Force.  A desirable goal but sentients still tried to hold it off a long as possible.  DeeJay audibly 'swallowed' in sympathy.

"I admit having my troopers turn you into literal Rebel scum does appeal to me.  But I want to prove Imperial superiority even on a equal footing.  I believe that all of you could get into another AT-ST quickly enough if you wanted to.  My men will encourage with ever-increasing speed and accuracy..." Kolaff was almost cackling enough to make his Emperor jealous.

OOC:  The adventure has another tedious stormtroopers-and-smoke battle until you are 'encouraged' to join Kolaff in his pre-ordained arrogant and forced duel anyway.  I figure we have 'been there and done that' regarding troopers in the dark.  Essentially, Kolaff is getting his jollies forcing you to fight him in an AT-ST.

If your characters decide to do so, they can make it into the AT-ST with no damage.  The troopers have been told to 'bantherd' them to the walker scout.  I believe everyone can fit inside.  It will be cramped but not beyond Star Wars' PG rating. ;-)   If the characters want to take any other kind of action besides scrambling to the AT-ST, the troopers will attempt to 'wing' you as a form of motivation.

If the characters don't go for the AT-ST, the troopers will start to harry their estimate of the non-combatants (the droids for one, and Lira Blissex has added a bounty for anyone who can hit her father.  I think someone didn't get enough hugs as a child).

Questions, just ask...

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

Celes, hands up and blaster in one her off-hand (what with the arm injury), turned her head to one side and whispered a quick plan to her team.

"Girls, lightsaber his left leg, then get to the hangar below. Everyone else, into the AT-ST. Go." And with that, Celes started to dash for Kolaff's walker in hopes of providing cover (with her body, as she had nothing else left) from the troopers' fire to the girls. At the same time, she pulled down her goggles and started firing on the troopers. Her "cover fire" was intended to kill.

[Spending whatever Force Point I may have left, I think I've got one remaining if I didn't get one back from last time, and we're gonna shoot the crap out of so many troopers.

That's Blaster 5D doubled to Blaster 10D, with five multiactions, -1D for each, giving me five shots of Blaster 5D on five of the troopers. I have no idea how many there are, but there's about to be fewer of them.

Hoo boy. Who'd I get? Also, bear in mind that I'm not dodging, as I'd have had to reduce them all to 4D and I forgot to do that and am not about to reroll all that. Besides, I'm literally planning to take shots for Shira and Thuraya here to get them where they need to go.]

"Yes ma'am. We'll get through this" Shira said quietly. In this situation, her usual adventurousness had drained out of her and she was aware they were facing their own mortality. With the lightsaber in her hand, but deactivated (it wasn't as if she could block bolts with it, so she'd activated it only when ready to use it), she tried to run towards the walker as fast as she could, with a boost from her boots if possible. She also tried to not draw attention, not easy when you have silver hair.

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

The doctor was concerned, as always, when the blaster fire started.  Stormtroopers firing in his direction motivated him to action.  His servo actuators whirring frantically, TwoOneBee ambled as quickly as his droid anatomy would allow towards the only safe place he could see.  Another AT-ST!  Of all the possible places listed in his data banks as possible Rebel sanctuaries an Imperial walker was nowhere to be found.

"I know I am going to regret this..," he said mostly to himself as he made his way to the waiting mechanical behemoth.  He was truly astonished to have gotten this far without so much as a single blaster bolt impact.  The odds of that many shots missing was a mathematical nightmare to compute!  Still, if the Maker chose to be generous, at least this once, who was he to argue?

Having reached the transport at least, he turned to encourage the rest.

"Keep going, DeeJay, EmesseeOne, T3P0, and you as well Mr Blissex.  You can make it, just a few more meters.  The entry hatch is right up there.  Hurray now, those blaster bolts are getting dangerously close!"

Once he was sure everyone else was on board, the old surgeon clambered up and entered the hatch himself with a last reluctant look around.

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

With Celes offering a barrage of blaster fire, Shira, Thuraya and Ali ran towards Kolaff's  AT-ST, lightsabers now ablaze.

Speed being of the essence, Shira activated those strange boots from Bespin.  She flew towards the bipedal metal monstrosity.  Her saber expertly bit into the leg of the walker.

The others moved toward the other AT-ST so generously provided by Kolaff.  Soon enough the cockpit of the machine was accessible and the fight outside visible throughout the viewports.

"What?!"
Kolaff's voice boomed over the speakers.  Apparently, lightsabers weren't taught in Imperial Walker Academy...

OOC:

I realize now I had a very bad grasp of the tactical situation.  I hope my post now works towards repairing that.

Shira can try and cut the leg with her lightsaber.  The difficulty to hit is a mere 5 (it would be hard to miss that giant leg) and then she can apply the damage to the walker.  The scales favor the walker but the lightsaber can do awesome damage (especially with Force powers behind them). Go ahead and roll to hit and then very likely roll damage.

Thuraya is there as a backup (and Ali is a duffer padwan at best but is a backup to Thuraya's backup) but this should be Shira's moment which is one reason why she got there first.   Celes gets her Character and Force Points back.

TwoOneBee is with all of the others in the other AT-ST.  The game is coming back onto the rails.

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

The tiny starfighter moved through space, the darkness within it greater than the cold and blackness of space.  It was a TIE fighter but of a rare variety, almost unique.   It was capable of hyperspace travel and its greater size held compact and efficient hyperdrives.

Lord Vader was meditating, the rasp of his mechanical breathing was almost as waves slowly crashing on some tranquil beach.  Imperial Intelligence had received the notice of Blissex and his party boarding Starfall.  Vader would later 'discuss' with the younger Blissex and Kolaff later why the intelligence had reached him before their own communications.

It was frustrating to have depend on such mundane forms of gathering information but the distances across the Galaxy were more powerful than the Force could convey.  At least it was for him, possibly even for his Master.  It was rare for the Dark Lord of the Sith to feel limitation and he abhorred the sensation.

Instinctively knowing the coordinates needed, Vader bypassed the TIE's computer and sent the command for the small vessel to enter hyperspace.

Soon...

OOC:  Here is a cutaway for a possible subplot I am happy to share between main posts.  Let me know whether you like the idea of not...

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

The old droid watched through the main viewport, astonished at how fiercely and precisely his companions managed to strike the Commander's Walker.  From the Kolaff's outburst, it was clear he hadn't anticipated them to take such a direct approach.  The despair that had flooded his circuits earlier was quickly dissipating, replaced by unaccustomed hope!  Perhaps they had a chance after all!  As he observed the now disorganized swarm of Storm troopers, he had an unexpected revelation.  Quickly he turned to his companions.

"DeeJay are you at all familiar with the controls for this mode of transport?  Mr Blissex, sir? T3P0? Yes Emessee One I'm asking you too!  Is there any way we could use the weapons, or other functions of this A.T-S.T, to keep the Troopers away from our friends?  I don't want to hurt the troopers of course, if it isn't absolutely necessary, but perhaps we could disorient them a bit further?  If we carefully calculate a trajectory for the weapons fire we might be able to startle them, and keep them away from our companions.  It could help mitigate the possibility of them being harmed."

Shira activated her lightsaber and sliced at the walker's leg like a Jedi hero! "For the Alliance!" she cried out. Her heroic moment lasted until she realized she was exposed and defenseless and turned to flee back to the safety of her team's AT-ST. Hopefully, the damage would be enough.

01:33, Today: Shira rolled 25 using 7 dice and +1 pips with the WEG Classic system.  Dexterity +force point.

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

All of her companions had risked themselves into one goal, to get Shira into position.  And she flew and danced on the leg of the giant walker like some agile insect.  Whether that was from the Force or from those strange boots would be up for Shira to tell at cantinas later should they survive this.

She hit home, the saber blade biting into the leg of the oversized combat vehicle...

OOC:  OK, having brushed up on rules I have long forgotten, here is what is going on.  It is only a five to hit the mighty scout walker.  And on top of that, due to the scaling rules of Star Wars (when there is a great mismatch of sizes between combatants), Shira gets a free +4D to her lightsaber attacks.  She almost cannot fail to hit this giant metal behemoth.  That is the good news.

The bad news is that the walker has 7D Strength (3D innate + 4D for scaling) to resist Shira's 5D of Lightsaber Skill.  Not having the Lightsaber Combat skill, she cannot improve the lightsaber's damage.

But, needing only to make a five to hit (with a free +4D scaling bonus), Shira can seperate her dice to make several lightsaber attacks.  If she was to make seven seperate attacks (splitting her 7D into 1D attacks), she would get seven attacks at 5D (1D Shira's Force-boosted skill + 4D scaling) to make a mere 5 to hit.  Playing the odds, she will hit all seven times.

This gives her seven chances to beat 7D with 5D.  At least one of them should do some damage.  And Ali and Thuraya will use their duffer skills as well.

Check my rules knowledge and let me know what you think.  Shira can redeclare and reroll her dice if she wishes.  She shouldn't be penalized by my murky memory of the rules.  My apologies for being so rusty.

OOC:  The good news Shira hit all seven times.  That is seven 5D damage rolls!

But I am not sure if I understand the damage text you have posted.  I see what seems impossible amounts of damage with the wrong number of dice.  All players, let me know if I am misunderstanding things.

In the meantime, let me roll the AT-ST's Strength to resist damage.

20:44, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC AT-ST Scout, rolled 25 using 7 dice with the WEG Classic system ((6,2,6,5,{Wild}2,2,2)).

20:48, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC AT-ST Scout, rolled 22 using 7 dice with the WEG Classic system ((2,{Wild}3,6,1,2,5,3)).
20:50, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC AT-ST Scout, rolled 17 using 7 dice with the WEG Classic system (({Wild}2,1,6,2,1,4,1)).
20:50, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC AT-ST Scout, rolled 13 using 7 dice with the WEG Classic system ((1,1,3,2,{Wild}2,1,3)).

I rolled pretty well the first resistance rolls but the last two are below the average of 5D.

I'm using the WEG Classic System for rolls which allows for better damage.  Shira can roll again using that if she didn't before.  I think she will have better luck.  If Shira wishes, I can roll those dice for her and save some work (it is all the same code to the dice server).

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

Shira struck with her lightsaber, slashing at the metal beast like a cornered womp rat.  Her blade hit home, sinking deep into the machine.

21:40, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Scout Walker, rolled 4 using 1 dice with the WEG Classic system (({Wild}4)).  A weapons system is damaged.

Her shoes flew her towards the scout's main lasers.  A quick stroke of her saber, a close shave as it were, and the primary weapon of the machine was destroyed.  Crackling blue feedback flew back into the high-ranking officer Shira could see in the cockpit windows.

21:49, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Kolaff, rolled 0 (1 excluding the wild die) using 1 dice with the WEG Classic system (({Wild}1)).
21:50, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Kolaff, rolled 8 using 3 dice and 1 pips with the WEG Classic system ((3,{Wild}2,2)).

Still, it was not enough to do any more than annoy the Imperial who cursed in futility as his main guns were destroyed.

Thuraya followed with her saber.  She chose a single stroke, guiding it with the Force and thus taking the majority of her concentration.

21:58, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Thuraya, rolled 19 using 3 dice with the WEG Classic system (({Wild}6(+5),5,3)).
22:00, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Thuraya, rolled 11 (17 excluding the wild die) using 5 dice with the WEG Classic system ((4,3,4,5,{Wild}1)).
22:04, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC AT-ST Scout, rolled 18 using 6 dice with the WEG Classic system ((1,6,1,{Wild}3,4,3)).

But she still did no damage to the behemoth.

Cursing, Ali struck with her nascent skill and unfamiliar saber.

Ali spends her Force point
22:07, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Ali, rolled 4 using 1 dice and 2 pips with the WEG Classic system (({Wild}2)).

Blue lightning played over the scout but there was no further effect.

Darn it, the dice have betrayed y'all.  Thuraya will spend her Force Point next round.  I was just trying to avoid the 'Thuraya saves the group' trope again.  Kolaff and his machine are too stunned to react this round.  The troopers are too afraid to shoot at you.  Kolaff wants to do you himself and they might hit him.

Y'all have one more round to act against this stubborn thing. Questions, just ask...

"Oh wow!" Shira says, slightly surprised that her attack actually worked. She scurries back towards their own AT-ST and safety. "Celes! Fire that thing!"

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

Inspired by the other's example, Thuraya called upon the Force and struck just once with her lightsaber.

22:49, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Thuraya, rolled 26 using 8 dice with the WEG Classic system ((2,4,3,6,2,3,{Wild}3,3)).
22:49, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Thuraya, rolled 39 using 9 dice with the WEG Classic system ((6,{Wild}5,3,2,6,4,5,6,2)).
22:50, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC AT-ST Scout, rolled 11 (18 excluding the wild die) using 7 dice with the WEG Classic system (({Wild}1,4,1,6,4,1,1)).

Attacking the other, undamaged leg of the scout walker did the trick as Shira had already weakened the colossus.  The top of the walker fell off of the bottom and onto the deck.

"Noooo!" cried Kolaff over the last of the loudspeaker with the Imperial knack for verbal improvisation.

22:54, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Scout, rolled 52 using 12 dice with the WEG Classic system ((6,3,4,{Wild}5,4,5,6,3,5,5,4,2)).
22:56, Today: That Old Fossil, for the NPC Kolaff, rolled 12 using 3 dice and 1 pips with the WEG Classic system ((6,{Wild}4,1)).

The Scout's cockpit literally hit the deck and exploded, silencing the arrogant Imperial Captain forever.  The rebels had enough foresight to dodge and were able to witness their victory without harm.

OOC:  I'm sorry for yet another 'Thuraya saves the day' trope usage but Shira did 'tenderize' the behemoth with her own saber, with a little help from her friends.  Kolaff is dead and the troopers are momentarily confused by the explosion, smoke and fire.  They are also psychologically not very well prepared to be suddenly without leadership.

If your characters wish, they can quickly get into another AT-ST Scout and descend by vehicle lift to the next level which the characters can see holds a ready and waiting shuttle (thank goodness for the large openings in the Star Wars Universe).  It seems like you are almost out of here.

With Kolaff's scout walker thoroughly sliced by the girls' lightsabers, Celes fired another few rounds toward the stormtroopers to serve as cover for the remaining group to get aboard the available AT-ST.

"Go!" For her part, Celes made her way toward the vehicle lift controls, fully intending to get back to the walker as intact as she could get after getting them moving.

"Captain, use the cannon to give me some covering fire!"

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

Shira scrambles in to the walker, partially exultant and partially terrified. "He's been persistent, but a falling walker plus and explosion really ought to take care of him. Let's run for it!" Shira says. Realizing they are in a walker, she adds "Literally." Although quite excited, working in full gravity is beginning to tire her. "Are we all holding up well?"

Re: Starfall - Episode One:  Blind Man's Bluff

In the chaos, there seemed to be nothing more to do but get into the AT-ST scout.  The confusion in running figures and smoke clouds was apparently reflected in the crackling static of comm queries and random shouting.

It was perhaps an opportunity.  Powering up the metal beast, the heroes were able to have it lumber to the vehicle lift and descend into the shuttle bay below.  The shuttle bay was aptly named, the stars beckoned beyond the shielded entrance.  DeeJay's 'breath' audibly caught in her throat, a bit of programming meant to reassure organics, now just as much second 'nature' to herself.  They were almost free!

Six stormtroopers stood in a standard formation outside of a shuttle that had its ramp down.  This was a standard honor guard and not necessarily a sign of wariness on troopers' part.  At the other end of the shuttle bay was a control tower.  In its large viewport, a slender elegantly-dressed figure watched the descending scout with both suspicion and hope.

"Lira." Blissex said softly, recognizing his estranged daughter..

OOC:  It would seem that one AT-ST scout might look like another and that Lira Wessex believes her husband, Captain Kolaff, is the victor in this situation.  However, you cannot board the shuttle in an AT-ST...
