Question 1:  a player asked if they could find out their item before the game start.  The answer is no, go ahead and build your non-epic character as if you don't have the item.  The item will be added when we start things off.

Question 2: a player asked if the characters will start off knowing each other. Yes I think it is best to get things going with at least knowledge of each other. So don't feel you have to hide your description or what you are playing in OOC.  However, you will not have actually adventures with each other as a group.  The group will form as part of the start.

All sheets should be active. I'll post a template sheet in there if you don't already have the normal 3.5 one.

Welcome folks.  Please confirm for me here which role you are filling: Skill, Strong Caster, Weak Caster, Melee, or Ranged.  I want to make sure your choice is clear and known to the other players.

My preferred role is melee/skills: the traditional rogue one.

We're level 2 so I'm exclusively Melee. There will be some minor divine magic involved later on, probably.

Well as the other rogue I'm clearly skills, though I'm making sure that I've got a mix of ranged and melee capability.

My skills are far more 'taking to people' than 'locks / traps & searching' I rolled poorly for stats so am not exactly awesome at stuff. Still we are second level... and I'm a decent diplomancer

Amara is a Caster though I'm not sure if you would say Strong or Weak.  She is a Healer from the Miniatures Handbook, one that is not aggressive but can and will defend herself and those she is trying to treat.

That works cause I'm more the searching/spotting/hiding with some skill in the locks and traps.  Far less capable in the chatting with people.

Weak caster (for now); maybe ranged.

I think "weak" casters are the classes with partial spell progression such as Bard, Ranger, Duskblade etc., while "strong" casters are full caster classes like Wizard, Cleric, Druid... Healers can cast 9th grade spells, so in my opinion that makes them strong casters.

I'm pretty sure you are correct.  He's going more from that concept than reflecting on the fact that we're low level and thus weak everything in or specific area.

Correct .. Healer is a Strong Caster.
