Luthraeg

Luthraeg Levorsenheld can only be seen by appointment of course, in his luxury penthouse suite a the Ansonia, a very classy, elegant but long past its prime Victorian building that has just the right feel for a centuries old Unseelie with expensive tastes.

Being a centuries old Fey he is also paranoid, and wary, and has made sure that the apartment is secure against "unconventional" visitors.  The windows are all shut with iron latches.  No one gets in to see him but those the doorman admits.

Edna worked on it, but finally an appointment appealing to his ego, suggesting that the library might have something he would be interested in but staying vague on the details.

Grabble emerges from the 72nd Street subway stop and looks north up Broadway to where the Ansonia is visible a couple of blocks away. The goblin still wears his overly large trench coat and as soon as he emerges from the subway he pulls a badly chewed cigar from his pocket and lights it while he waits for the others to join him. He has made no effort to appear more presentable than normal and seems almost eager at the prospect of meeting with Luthraeg.

OOC  Well, I've waited for other PC's but it looks like you will at least be starting up here on your own!

Unless you'd rather reunite with the others, all things considered.

Which do you prefer?

I'd prefer to reunite with other characters. You can hold onto this scene until there are more people ready to be in it.

Can I just pop over to A Night on the Town?

Virana finally found her way to the location she was asked to go to after meeting Flea at the library and after a bit of trouble finding a proper parking spot nearby she left her truck locking it and headed for the building to meet the individual that was already waiting.

Looking distinctly grungy and still smoking his cigar, Grabble walks towards the Ansonia. As he approaches he spots a girl parking a truck and looks more closely at her. It only takes a moment before the thought clicks in his mind. She's the one who's supposed to meet me here. He sticks his hands deeper into his pockets and quickly crosses the street to intercept the girl before she reaches the doorway to the building.

Reaching a hand up to pull the cigar from his mouth, Grabble makes a gesture that might on occasion be confused for a greeting to grab the girl's attention. "Hey! Are you the girl I'm supposed to go talk to Luthraeg with? They told me someone looking like you would show up." He sizes her up and then adds another question. "Did they explain what we're doin' here?"

Grabble sticks his cigar back in his mouth and puts his hands back in his pockets. He makes a noise that might be a grunt of acknowledgement. "I'm Grabble. Thought Flea seemed pretty flighty, guess we will do this without her." He eyes the truck in its parking space. "I'm amazed you managed to find somewhere to park."

Turning to face the Ansonia, Grabble makes a face as he examines the building. "So, I haven't heard good things about this guy. This should be fun." He grins maliciously.

"Sometimes you just get lucky. Though to be honest I am not from this area at all, I'm from out by Green Bay Wisconsin. Though both my parents are from this area so who knows maybe this person knows them, or one of my older siblings, so that could be a help."

Grabble starts to walk towards the door of the Ansonia. "If there's an off chance that he might knows your folks, I say you can go ahead and take point. Warning from the folks in charge is to make sure he doesn't get his claws in you though. Apparently he likes to sleep with anything that has two legs."

Luthraeg

In the elegant lobby of the Ansonia, the Doorman calls Luthraeg's apartment to clear two visitors, and then sends the two up to suite at the southeast corner of the 9th floor.  The Ansonia has one of New York's grand historical staircases, but the elevator is faster.

Luthraeg's door swings open by itself.  It's the sort of thing that Fey would conclude is magic, but Humans are so much more sensible and logical about these things, and it must certainly be a hidden motor, either remote controlled or connected to a sensor of some kind.  The apartment inside is lavishly decorated, but seems to switch styles every wall.

"Come in, come in, if it's my lunch leave it on the kitchen counter, if you are here to see me, room on the right, please."

His voice has a richness and strength to it that could land him a career on Broadway in theater, or at least, broadcast.

The Unseelie, all Fey know, have an obsession with perfection and beauty- including in themselves.  Like their Faerie counterparts, they have natural good looks and charm, but they will use every bit of magic and fashion they can acquire to push it further.  Luthraeg is tall and slim, with long blond hair and a hand stitched Italian suit of the kind that if you ask how much it costs, you obviously can't afford it.

And of course, Fey can see through the Veil.  That is his natural form.  Well, that plus pointed ears, of course.

That works two ways, though.  Certainly, Luthraeg recognizes a Goblin when he sees one, but he gives Virana a curious - but very appreciative- look.

Grabble, as a rule, doesn't trust anyone who wears a suit; much less a suit that costs more than a reasonable person would pay for a car. He gives the Unseelie his squinty eyed appraisal and take a full second to decide how he wants to approach broaching the subject of the invitation. Finally deciding that he'll start with introductions, Grabble grins obnoxiously. "Good afternoon Mr. Luthraeg. My name is Grabble and this is Virana. We're from the library." He removes his hat and places it over his heart.

In the most innocent tone he can manage, Grabble explains what brings the two of them there. "For a reason that I can't imagine, they wanted to extend an invitation for you to join them for Thanksgiving dinner." Grabble's face is bright with false sincerity.

He gestures for them to makes themselves at home in his living room.  The furniture looks like its upholstered in some kind of faux fur.

"Let us talk about this, because I am most interested.  What indeed are they thinking?  Heaven knows some there are not fond of me.  Would you like something?  Vodka martini?  Humans have made an art form of alcohol, truly, if there is a magic they have mastered but we have not, this is it.  I have only the best, here.  I have always thought, why waste one's time with anything but the best.  Do you agree?"

Grabble doesn't hesitate to take advantage of Luthraeg's hospitality. He throws himself down on a couch and lounges in a way the oozes impropriety. The goblin may not be outwardly as dirty as some of his kin, but he is still a Goblin and has a aura of uncleanliness despite his appearance. It takes only a moment for Grabble to think of what drink to ask for. "In that case, I'm guessing you don't have Bud Light. I never drink cocktails and, personally, I've never been partial to those foofy craft beers." A broad grin stretches across Grabble's face.

He twirls one hand in the air idly as he answers the questions. "Honestly, I don't think they wanted to send me. I volunteered." He adopts a tone of faux, exaggerated politeness. "However, they wanted to ensure that someone of your prominence in our community received a personal invitation. You would be most welcome and the library would be honored to have you attend."

"Just because something is expensive does not mean it is the best, my old sixty thousand dollar truck has blown the doors off of new two hundred thousand dollars cars that the owners have had performance tuning done on. But I was asked to come by the other person who was supposed, to but an emergency came up and she had to take care of it so asked me to come. As my father knows and trusts her I decided to do her a favor by coming here. Though I do not think the library would ask you to come if they where not serious about the request, as even from the little tiem I was there I could see that they where busy with other things aswell, so it could simply be that a goblin was the only other individual at the library that wasn't busy with other important work."

"You have a truck?" he asks Virana in a voice that sounds surprised, shocked, and slightly disgusted at the same time.  "Surely you jest!  A truck! Mud flaps!  I see you in a classic sports car, a thing of beauty and power.  Perhaps a Lotus Evora.  If you do not have one, we can see how you do in mine, yes?"

The Unseelie's golden eyes scan his bar. Yes, he knows, there is no "Bud Light".  Nothing like that.

"No cocktails... but you look like someone who would appreciate a straight shot of vodka, then.  Let me get that for you.  Now, this Thanksgiving, I assume a very exclusive guest list, yes?"

The goblin makes a mocking face behind the Unseelie's back when he turns to go to the bar and grins at Virana. "The guest list is exclusive enough that they didn't invite me, though I guess that's not saying much. I understand it will be THE event of the year though." Grabble pauses and scrunches up his face as though he is trying to look like he is thinking hard. "Honestly though, this is the library we're talking about. But back home I do have three other vehicles, a 1966 Olds Toronado, a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, and a 1983 DMC Delorean. My truck is a 1986 GMC one ton crew cab dually 4x4 with a modified engine. I like it because it's a tricky monster, most see it and think its slow just because of it's size, but I love seeing their jaws drop when the monster takes off leaving them in the dust.  As to the party I think my father might have mentioned some of them, though that was a while back he did say that they where usually fairly high class events especially for the fey community, though he did also say that sometimes things could get a bit out of control at the later times of the party."

"I prefer instrumental music mostly and usually from two bands, Mannheim Steamroller, and Trans Siberian Orchestra. As for dignity, I think a vehicle built for work has more dignity then one built solely for looks which is what most high end exotics are. My dually, was built for work and where would the world be without those that work, where would you be without those others that are willing to do the hard work. the Delorean, was one of the few cars I like that was partially intended for show more then go, but it is actually fairly popular for a vehicle that was only built for two years, though most of that is because of the movie trilogy, Back to the future, that and it's stainless steel body. The Olds Toronado, was the first front wheel drive luxury car GM produced, yet it was also at the same time categorized as a muscle car, the Daytona was a street car built specifically for racing on two mile oval tracks, all of my vehicles are rare and hard to find Mr. Luthraeg. Also Kitsune are usually mischievous by nature, so why should we not like other things that can be aswell? My truck, most people see that monster and think it's a slow plodding piece of junk, just by looking at it, but when challenged that truck has never lost in a drag race against any other. The Daytona was the reason NASCAR banned the big block v8 engines for the 1970 season and held a top speed record for 15 years. those vehicles have dignity of their own Mr. Luthraeg. Plus in my own experience those older vehicles are alot more reliable then modern vehicles are. But perhaps it would be best if both of us stop talking about vehicles for now.."

Grabble is half way through figuring out the most insulting way to explain the difference between the Seelie and Unseelie courts when Virana launches into her lecture on classic automobiles. He goblin feels his eyes begin to grow heavy as she talks about Deloreans, but he snaps back to wakefulness as she finishes. "Darn right I'm not going to make any excuses. What were we talking about? Oh right, you were saying something about people being put off by you and I was about to sarcastically reply that I couldn't possibly imagine people not enjoying being in your company. I'm a goblin, people never want me around and I couldn't care less." Grabble rolls his heads to crack his neck which creates a very disturbing noise.

The goblin snaps his fingers as he remembers the question Luthraeg asked. "Look Luthy, I know all I really care to know about the Seelie and the Unseelie courts. They're both a bunch of crusty old Fey who are very powerful and very full of themselves. There's a lot of complicated politics that I keep my nose out of, but sometimes someone pays me enough to get involved. Until there's money on the table though, I really don't care." He gives the Fey a sort of apologetic shrug.

He turns back to Virana.  "Though you are not without graces... of a most unusual nature.  Still, some sparks of culture gleam.  Mannheim… good music came from Mannheim.  Mozart studied there… I knew him once.  Not exactly what most Humans think him to be, of course.  But that is water long under the bridge.  I am glad you have a calling, though it is the last thing I would expect of one living here.  You are a fish out of water, that much is clear."

"Now the two of you may not want to learn more about the Seelie, but there will come a time when you wish you had.  There are many unsettled issues, regarding us, and them. The Unseelie faerie ponders his two visitors for another moment, and as his kind are wont to do, instinctively calculates the values exchanged.  And he frowns, for he is the loser.  All he has done is given away the gift of his presence, and what has he gained in return?

Not a single hopeful glance from the automotively oriented Kitsune.  Luthraeg has already dismissed her as a possibility.  Faeries are supposed to enjoy music and art and beauty, not... machines.

And he will have to suffer through the company of all those other...  It has always been the view of the Unseelie Courts that most other Fey should participate primarily as servants, or perhaps entertainment.  A few of the finer ones could be guests, but certainly this dinner at the library would include so many of those Brownies and other wretched wee folk.

"I will make a deal with you," he says as they are preparing to leave.  "There are still some who are deserving of my presence... and I do not speak of the Seelie.  There is a Sylph, Breeze, who has taken up so many Human ways that some say she forgets who she is.  If she is at this gathering I shall be most grateful.  I would even bestow upon you a gift, if you were to see to this."

That will most easily be accomplished by an offer with specifics." He opens one eye and grins to Virana. "Appearances aside, I can be very charming if I put my mind to it. Normally, tracking down a Sylph is next to impossible, given that they fly over enormous distances, and being Fey creatures of Elemental Air, can blend into the sky flawlessly.

Fortunately, there is some Human designed magic that makes things much easier.  Cell Phone Technology, they called it.  Yes, there were a lot of problems, and Gremlins caused interference, but the Humans have gotten better and better at it.  It's become much harder for the Gremlins to cause any long lasting problems, though they claim responsibility for the Great Blackberry Outage of 2011.

Breeze is well known to the library, and considered one of the "friendlier" Fey out there but too busy to be a regular aid to the Library.  She has managed to integrate herself more into the mainstream Human world than most Fey ever can... or want to.  And of course, the characters have her number.

The Sylph is currently in a Pilates class.

"But," she says, "come by and we'll talk afterwards, it doesn't go long.  We can get Frozen Yogurt or something like that!"

It is downtown, on the west side, not too inconvenient.

He starts heading back towards the entrance to the subway before he catches himself and turns back. "I suppose you'll want to move you car, but we'll never find a place to park it downtown." He looks up at her a raises an eyebrow.

Virana followed Grabble down and smirked at his complaints.

"He did seem like someone who has always gotten what he wants, and feels that everyone should feel privileged to even know him let alone be in his presence."

As they got outside and she listened to Grabble talk to Breeze and she smirked at his comment about not finding a spot for her truck in the part of town they where going and smiled as she headed towards her truck.

"Don't forget what Kitsune are known for."

she stopped next to her truck and smiled as it shimmered before in it's place was a black 1966 Olds Toranado.

"I do make use of illusion now and then, and don't always tell all the truth unless asked directly. Also people tend to look out for my truck more then the cars so I tend to use the illusion that its my truck when it's one of my cars. And I loved the look on his face when I told him I was driving an old truck."

Grabble lets out a low whistle and walks around the car once. "Now that's a stylish ride." The goblin's grin is somewhat unsettling, but almost certainly sincere. "I got a big kick out of his reaction to that too." He walks up to the passenger side of the car and brushes off his trench coat a little before looking back to Virana. "Can I get a lift? I assumed you'd want to come along for the rest of these invitations. Hopefully the rest will be more pleasant."

"If I had intended to leave you behind and to do the rest of the invites on your own I wouldn't have lifted the illusion, but get in. Though I would preffer no smoking in the car."

After saying this Virana quickly unlocks the doors and gets into the drivers seat and smiles as she starts the car up and it does almost immediately and settles to a low rumble that to car enthusiasts would speak of good tuning and horsepower.

Realizing that he has been gesturing with the still smoldering stump of his cigar, Grabble tosses what remains behind him onto the sidewalk without so much as bothering to put it out. He brushes his hands on his trench coat and get's in the car. "Ahem, yeah of course. That's perfectly reasonable. Darn things smell like garbage and I hope Luthy can never get the smell out." The goblin's grin is an impressive blend of malevolence and glee.

Though he notes the sound of the engine, Grabble isn't enough of a car enthusiast to do more than note that it sounds impressive. "Alright, let's head downtown and see what Breeze thinks of old Luthy coming to the party." He appears to be physically restraining himself from putting his booted feet on the dash, which appears to be quite difficult.

Virana smirks as she pulls out into traffic and heads downtown, the car responding nice and smooth with very little outside noise or even noise from the engine being able to be easily heard, and even the bumps seemed almost nonexistent, truly marking the car as a luxury vehicle. She goes for a couple miles before she speaks up.

"If you feel under your seat there should be a thick cloth that you can put over the dash to protect it if you have to put your feet up"

Grabble grumbles something incoherent and shakes his head. "That would be even worse. I'd be putting even more effort into being considerate." Scratching under his chin, he reaches into his coat pocket, thinks better of it, and drums on his thigh as though trying to avoid touching anything. "Let's just focus on making good time. Maybe give a few pedestrians a scare if we get a chance. I don't ride in cars very often. New York cabs make goblins look cleanly." A fidgety goblin is probably an intensely amusing sight.

Battery Park City

Virana finds that this new vehicle look blends better than the big truck, which might as well have "I'm not from around here" bumper stickers.  This one, to the locals, says "I'm from Howard Beach".

They take the West Side Highway, driving past the row of gleaming Trump apartment towers, the cruise ship terminal and the USS Intrepid as they go downtown to Battery Park City.

Battery Park City is not one of the neighborhoods the Fey folk prefer.  A relatively recent (1980's) neighborhood, it was built on landfill, extending Manhattan Island and pushing back the shallow water of the Hudson River.  It is an entirely planned development, owing nothing to time and nature.

Whether they realize or not, that is part of why the Fey generally don't like it.  They are more connected to the Earth than Humans generally are, and such a break from "natural reality" makes many of them uncomfortable.  It is also a neighborhood entirely brought about by plans on paper.  No funky dive bars, quirky little shops, or anachronistic historical leftovers here. Just clean lines and chain stores.  This, too, is not something the Fey find appealing.  And the people here all wear suits and work in offices.

Breeze seems not to notice these things, and apparently revels in living a "serious" normal Human life, blending in with all the other normal Humans around her.

Like most of Manhattan, available on-street parking is more rare than True Faeries, and they are forced to park in an over priced garage.  Breeze doesn't think about these things- she doesn't own a car, and when she absolutely must be somewhere quickly, she can fly.  But park they do, and they find the "pilates studio" Breeze directed them to.  There is indeed a frozen yogurt store nearby.

A heavy, mature woman with a Bichon Frise passes them, and the Bichon Frise barks frantically.  Some dogs seem very aware of the Fey (all cats are) but with a dog like this it is hard to tell.  Some of them go berserk over anything everything.

Grabble isn't particularly familiar with the history of the Battery Park area or he might shake his head at the idea of turning a perfectly good landfill into such a clean and organized neighborhood. Once they've parked and found the yoga studio, Grabble bares his teeth at the Bichon Frise which really only serves to set the animal off more and earn a satisfying look of terror from its owner. The goblin looks as out of place in this area as he did inside Luthraeg's apartment building, but it gives him special pleasure to pull a fresh cigar out of his dirty trenchcoat and light it outside the yoga studio. If nothing else, he looks distinctive enough that he hopes Breeze will recognize him for what he is and approach them.

Virana muttered to herself about the cost of parking though a couple words could be heard such as illusion, fake, piece of junk. But she stopped muttering as the dog came by with it's owner barking at them, though she had to smirk at Grabbles reaction to the dog, before they get to the studio and she stand slightly apart from him as they wait for Breeze to notice them.

Battery Park City

Breeze makes her appearance when she is done with her session.  The Veil does not have to work too hard to disguise a Sylph, and most of what the characters can see is what any mortal sees: a pretty woman with a very slim build.  In her real form, she has delicate wings, and her slim build is actually a little too slim to be real, and of course she has that Sylph's way of having a gentle breeze blow her hair regardless of the actual weather.  But the overall look, the pale skin and platinum hair, is the same.

She has never met the characters, but she knows they are involved with the Library.

"Hi!" she says happily.  "Did you have any trouble getting here?  I'm Breeze.  Is this about those odd little Christmas creatures?"

Grabble clears his throat and does his best to put on a winning smile, which does not work in the slightest. "Christmas creatures? Oh, you mean those gnomey fellows: the Nisse. No, this isn't about them. Or not exactly. We are from the library though." He clears his throat again and leans against the window of the yoga studio. He's clearly in no rush to head to the frozen yogurt place. "We're here to extend you an invitation from the Library to come to a Thanksgiving dinner."

Grabble clears his throat for a third time, but this time, when he resumes speaking he has apparently exhausted the extent of whatever politeness he seemed to have managed for the first part of the message. He immediately sets about making up for it. "I'm personally here to tell you that a snooty, full of himself Unseelie slimeball by the name of Luthraeg has also been invited. He told me that he'd take it as a personal favor if I saw to it that you attended. Unfortunately, I don't care to do favors for skeezes like him." Grabble looks like he's tempted to spit on the ground, but manages to restrain himself.

"I wouldn't necessarily call him a slime ball but he does seem full of himself, the thing I didn't care for was him trying to tell me what I should and shouldn't like. Just because we're all fey doesn't mean we all have to be cookie cutter versions of each other. But I suppose Miss. Breeze that comments like that aren't necessarily going to encourage you to come to the party. Or am I mistaken."

"All Unseelie are snooty and full of themselves," Breeze says.  "It is their way of being.  They are immortal, or nearly so.  They have powers, more so than most of us, and they have their good looks, and they think the whole package makes them better than everyone else.  If they didn't think that, they wouldn't be Unseelie, they would be Seelie.  I think the entire war between them is more or less an attitude problem."

"But, he wants me personally? I don't know whether I should be afraid or flattered or both.  Oh, but they say its not good to needlessly anger them.  Maybe I should..."

Grabble looks like he's in full agreement with Breeze about the nature of the Unseelie until she says that the Seelie are the opposite. At that point he looks like he wants to disagree somewhat strongly, but manages to contain the response to a scowl. When she says she's unsure how to feel about Luthraeg asking after her specifically, he does chime in. "Personally, I'd be grossed out."

In a tone of someone half talking to himself, Grabble continues. "As far as being safe, the normal circumstances will apply at the Library during the party, but a slimy guy like him only cares about propriety when it suits him. I find needlessly angering them to be something of a treat myself, but they tend to overlook Fae like me regardless." He shrugs and looks back at Breeze. "In the end, it's your choice. I just wanted to make sure you had the full story."

Grabble appears to struggle with something for a moment, looks up at Virana, back at Breeze, sighs, and continues in a disconsolate, grumbling tone. "Of course, I'd be happy to keep an eye out myself." He clears his throat again before adding hastily. "Only because I'm not a fan of snooty Fae like him though and because I get kicks out of tripping Fae like him up." Grabble inspects his nails intently after his statement.

"Oh it's at the Library!" Breeze said, sounding relieved.  "It's... well its safer, there.  No matter how much they might bluster, the Unseelie would never break decorum there.  Not there.  Have you worked for them long?  They are a strange... I mean, they seem so simple and sincere, but for Humans, they know a lot.  And they have a lot of power.  There's magic neither Seelie nor Unseelie really understand, and they are the ones among us who know magic the best."

She thought about it briefly, and added, "I think.. I don't associate with... with our kind as often I as I used to.  It's... hmmm..."

The frozen yogurt shop was empty.  This was not unusual, it was evening, and it was mid November, and with the recent cold weather few people had any desire for frozen dairy treats.  But Sylphs, used to soaring through the clouds, never felt cold.

"I can keep an eye out aswell, though I know few would trust any Kitsune, we can be trusted, and who knows I might even see about getting invites for some of my older siblings that are of a similar personality to me, together we'd make sure anyone causing trouble get horribly humiliated, and all without showing our hand in anything that happened."

Grabble nods gravely at the 'we can be trusted' comment. "For my part, I can't say I'd be subtle about interfering in any trouble, but that's for me to worry about." His mischievous grin returns. The goblin is perfectly warm in his oversized trenchcoat, but shifts uncomfortably in his surroundings anyway. Mostly, its the appalling cleanliness of the shop that disturbs him.

Puffing up a bit when Breeze starts to talk about the library, Grabble elaborates a little on his own story. "Oh yeah, it's at the library. Great establishment. It's a little too goody goody for me, but now that they've got me I can take care of the nasty stuff for them. I haven't worked for them long, no. I'm not from here originally, I'm from Chicago. Big cities tend to be pretty similar though and my people are adaptable." The frozen yogurt shop if so oppressive to his natural sensibilities, that he can't even bring himself to pull out a cigar to chew on.

As the Sylph deliberates, Grabble reaches into his coat for a cigar, gives up, and leans forward intently instead. "Look, from what I can hear, it's gonna be a real good time. The sorta thing you don't wanna miss. If the only thing holding you back is that skeeze, don't worry about it."

The Sylph's eyebrows go up at mention of "Kitsune".

"Oh, so that's... you're a Kitsune.  I've heard of them... I've even been to the Far East*, but I never saw one.  I've heard people talk about them a few times.  Umm... those are very pretty tails.  Is it hard to organize them all?"

Breeze stops.

"I am going off tangentally, aren't I?  But I still want to hear about Kitsune.. yes, yes, I will go the dinner.  I also want to see what the Unseelie are up to.  If Luthraeg isn't up to something now, he will be by then.  It's the way they are."

*Sylphs are known for long distance travel, which they accomplish entirely without the use of aircraft other than themselves.  They are also known to use somewhat dated terms like "Far East" because they have long lifespans.
