Introduction
The Harlow Cluster, 11 light years across isn't a important sector. Scattered around are colonies, settlements, industrial complexes, and research centers. The cluster is divided into four operational patrol zones, each watched over by a single Flare Team. Responding to calls within Patrol Zone Delta is your Flare Runner ship the Calor.

The other Flare Runner ships are:
Nevermore in the Alpha sector,
Longbow in the Beta sector,
Casino in the Gamma sector

Nine weeks have past since the team had recived a call for assistance. That had been a routine mission; a freighter had blown their FTF drive and needed help making repairs. It was a nice diversion, but hardly anything worthy of a journal entry. The Harlow cluster was mostly empty and generally boring. Suddenly that all changed when when the distress call was received. It was time to get to work.

Introduction
" Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is Blue Star Six, we are a mining station currently operating on the fifth planet in the Epsilon system, patrol zone Delta of the Harlow Cluster. We have experienced a catastrophic accident of unknown origin. There was an explosion in our extractor followed by an emergency shutdown of our processor. Main power is offline. I repeat we have lost main power. Emergency power seems stable but we've suffered extensive damage. We have people trapped throughout the station, many of whom need urgent medical attention. Blue Star Six request immediate assistance. Please, anyone out there, we need help."

Introduction
The distress call is from a system 5 light years away. So this means the transmission is currently 5hrs old.  Any reply to the station won't arrive until 5 hrs after its made.

The transmission shows 8 people in industrial white jumpsuits and helmets. 6 of them appear injured, 2 apparently seriously so. The air is hazy with smoke and sparks erupt periodically from the control panels. The man making the transmission speaks slowly with a voice struggling to remain calm and clear.

The screen goes dark before the message repeats, doing so every 10mins.

( The PCs may start posting at this point )

Turning to his team mates his says with purpose, "let's get moving.  We've injured people who are still alive."

( Once the FTL drive is engaged no transmissions or reception are possible.
Do the PCs want to do anything whilst in FTL transit? As it will take 40 hrs to get there.)

Julia looks at the distress transmission in detail. She assembles a large backpack of medical supplies and slips in a fully charged laser pistol. She goes to sleep for the duration of the FTL transit.

It's been a good while since the last serious mission, so Matt heads down to wherever gear is stored, and starts working up rescue gear and the like, trying to make sure that all their kit is good to go when they get on site in forty hours. If time allows, he'll also offer to help the medic prep any medical gear, since medic is more or less what he's cross-trained as.

Hearing the intercom buzz signals the need to wake. "Danggit, Just a nap, why can't it ever go off when you are not trying to get some shuteye." Muttering to himself Andrew slides his pants on and wanders over to the com. "Hows it look and where we going? Never mind, meet you in the danger room as we get things rolling."

Sliding on his boots and overshirt on, Andrew heads on down to take stock of the situation.

Julia wakes and gets her gear and herself ready, " Hey, guys does anyone know anymore about where we are going, and what those folks in trouble are doing there. Just in case we need special gear or something ?!"

Walking in as Julia curb stomps the computer Andrew halts midstep, just as she turns around. "Whoa, whoa, It's just a piece of metal, an expensive one at at." Continuing his stride he moves over to the console. "Computers are like anything else here, you can only get the right response if you hit the right buttons." Glancing over his shoulder as she leaves. "And it looks like this piece of metal knows how to push yours."

Sliding into a chair Andrew gets to work to see if he can retrieve any kind of information about the station and surrounding areas. Sadly, it seems that his sweet talking of the "hunk of soon to be space junk" did nothing to improve the computers mood.

Responding to Julia's question, Chad says conversationally, "it's a mining station and they've had an explosion of unknown origin.  Their main power went offline as a result.  Unfortunately, we don't know what type of explosion it was or what triggered it."

Introduction
Awakened by the noise from a final pre-mission nap, Matthew padded in wearing his complete uniform, aside from the pink bunny slippers that covered his feet.

Going over to the much maligned computer, he tapped in a few queries, then brought up the results for the station on the main screen.

With a yawn, he rubbed his eyes, and mumbled, "Is there coffee made?"

Introduction
The computer displays the following:

Blue Star Six is a floating mining station, one of 14 owned by New Priorities Corporation. It is designed to harvest elements and compounds from giant gas planets. It hovers in the upper atmosphere, dragging a harvesting tube below it which extends into the lower reaches of the planet. It processes and packages the products for transport. Such ships do not have FTL drives and must be towed between stars. Its engines can enter high planetary orbits and travel slowly between the planets of the same system. It has a crew of 72 and currently mining an organic compound called Galvia.

Epsilon Five is the 5th planet in orbiting the star Epsilon, has a modest ring system, and six small moons. Epsilon five itself is lifeless, but organic compounds do exist in the upper cloud level.

Galvia is a rare expensive organic compound.
