Valmora studies the large kobold a short distance away.  She takes a few steps towards him and stares at him.  She readies her ogre club knowing he's coming at them.

Not sure how he will attack, Valmora is ready for any of his attacks.

Aris'ta takes aim at the larger of the kobolds to the outside and lets an arrow fly. Her fingers feel the sting as she lets the bow go.

Chapter XI (Part I) - Combat Round 0935.2
Lann lashes out at the kobold in front of him, but the bugger is agile and easily dodges the blade. It feints inward, drawing Lann to the side and the tip of the spear pierces the elf's armor and flesh (-2).

The kobold that had fallen is now prone on the floor and instead of spending the precious moments to get ut, it rolls and attacks Jhaelin as he passes.  The blade hits, but does not pierce the cleric's boot.  Jhaelin attempts a return stroke on the prone kobold with his hammer, but the vermin scoots out of the way and Jhaelin must dodge an incoming attack from the larger kobold. Unable to dodge the blade, it cuts across his shield arm (-2).  It could have been a lot worse if it weren't for the kobold having to dodge the woodsman's spear attack. The cut in Cord's leg feels warm and he suddenly feels weaker (onset, -1 Dex). The attack on Cord leaves the kobold open and Karok takes the opportunity given to him and cleaves his blade through kobold hide and bone.  Now one leg less, the large kobold topples to the floor in a dying fit.  Blood spurts from arteries severed.

Meanwhile... outside the hole in the wall.

Roxie levels her crossbow at the kobold inside the hole in the wall, at the one fighting Lann (K3).  The bolt flies wide, striking the wall behind Cord.

Illiana casts magic missile and they streak unerringly to their target that has no cover.  The two missiles impact of force rip across leather and flesh, but the real damage is inside.  The kobold drops where it stands, unable to get off his throw of a second javelin. With the larger kobold dropping dead, Val has no target and is left standing in place.  Aris' arrow finds nothing but air as the large kobold drops to the ground.

EDIT - to show Karok's actions this round and Cord's onset of poison.

Figuring the kobolds inside were taken care of, Illiana takes her vengeance out on the remaining kobolds that are still held to the right of their position.  She turns to the side, stretches forth her arm and twists her wrist while making signs with her fingers.

"Sanguma nilong" the mage utters, this time, a little harsher.

Suddenly two small points of... distortion... arcane projectiles of arcane energy appear near to her.  With a flick of her wrist the magical missiles streak toward two separate targets.

The larger kobold down, Cord turned to help Lann with a spear thrust at the kobold facing the elf.  His foot slipped in his own blood but he kept from falling by leaning into the thrust.  It was an all or nothing maneuver.  If he missed, he'd fall.

Chapter XI (Part I) - Combat Round 0935.2
Wednesdaeg 0940 hrs (New Sun)

The remaining kobolds are easily overwhelmed by the companions.  Illiana kills the remaining three that are entangled without mercy or restraint.  She seems to enjoy the act.  And the other two inside the ruin are overwhelmed by the fighters in there.

A search of all corpses is done.  Seven short swords are found, four steel in poor shape and three dwarven style in poor shape, along with six rusty dwarven styled daggers, six javelins, ten spears and three of the "flying talons" as described earlier are gathered.  All leather pouches are grouped with three containing the sticky, gooey poison, and one containing a group of centipedes with a small wooden mortar and pestle. 12 bladders of water is among the dead.  All valuables and coins are grouped into one pouch totaling 2gp, 56sp, 18cp and three small ruby gemstones (5gp ea). There are three sets of studded leather armor in relatively fair shape and nine weathered and worn leather armor breastplates.

The remaining of the ruins is empty with exception to the door to the shrine area.  It is blocked with large stone blocks and wooden beams.  Red kobold words are scribbled onto the wood. [Language unknown:  "ARTNA EIWALE INLL FO! TA ONS!"] A scratching noise can be heard from behind the doors every now and then, if one stays long enough to listen.

No children, or signs of children are found.

The first thing Jhaelin does is heal.  There were three injured, Cord being the worst for it.  Jhaelin moves from companion to companion, laying on hands and healing what he can and then finally himself if there is any energy left in him.

After an extensive search, Jhaelin slumps down against the wall in the room with the desk and rubs his stubbly head with one hand.

"The children are not here." he says, frustration is evident in his voice.  He casts a glance into the other room at the stairs that lead down into the cellar.  "We will have to go below.  But before we can do that, we will have to recover our energy.  I expect we will run into some kobolds down there somewhere."

"What do you think is behind the shrine doors?" he asks of no one in particular. Jhaelin counts out the coins, giving each of his companions a single gold coin, nine silver, and 2 coppers.  The rest, including the gemstones, he places in the kitty, a pouch for party use, such as meals, lodging, etc...

Aris'ta makes some form of curse in her foreign tongue, unsurprised by the findings. Somehow, in the back of her mind, she had feared this very finding. This-- nothing. Still, as she shoulders her bow and looks around, she is at least content that some of the danger of these lands has been removed.

"What now?" she asks, giving a long look towards Lann.

"I don't think it's the kids behind those doors," Cord said, poking at the slice in his breeches.  The gash in his leg was no more than an angry welt.  As he'd done before, Jhaelin's god had sealed the wound and hopefully any poisons that may have been on that creature's tainted blade.

"We go below as Jaehlin said, when we're ready," he replied to Aris.  He wasn't sure if she hadn't heard Jhaelin or just wanted a second opinion but he agreed with the plan.  They needed to see what was underneath the monastery.

He pulled a torch from his pack and made it ready to light once Jhaelin had recovered his strength.  In the meantime, he posted himself at the top of the stairs to listen for sign of any movement below.

Jhaelin wonders at the long look Aris gives the elf lad, but he would not voice any concern.  He stands again, shifting his gear and weight.

"I'll begin my meditation and prayers. I'm sure Illiana will be doing the same, if not already." he says looking around for the mage.  He shrugs, not seeing her present and moves off to the room with the fallen statue and stairs that lead down to the cellar for his quiet meditation.

Chapter XI (Part I) - Droskar's Crucible
Wednesdaeg 1020 hrs (High Sun)

The minutes pass slowly for those who are waiting and impatient.  Of course, maybe no one is impatient to go below into the depths of the ruin. As the waiting continues, Karok reads some notes from a dwarven text found weeks earlier in the library just off of the shrine area.
Old Dwarven Text:
Darkmoon Vale was not always the savage frontier it is today. More than a millennium ago, a vast dwarven kingdom sprawled across the landscape and pervaded deep into the stubborn rock below. Their civilization was unrivaled in its time, but as most grand kingdoms do, the dwarves conquered themselves from within. As their glories became innumerable, the dwarvesí decadence knew no bounds and their society began to collapse. Rampant indulgence fueled corruption, and soon the honor, discipline, and benevolence upon which the kingdom was built gave way to petty infighting over status, wealth, and power. The tattered kingdom sputtered and wheezed, but its death was delayed by the rise of a new cult devoted to a mirthless god of woe named Droskar. Droskarís followers reacted against the trends that staggered the kingdom, instating a dreadful dogma of salvation through endless toil and brutal subservience to the Dark Smith, as Droskar was often called. The dwarves became slaves to their own industry, producing heaps of weapons, armor, and gear to appease their dark god of the anvil and hammer. The wilderness around them was fed to Droskarís fires of industry until the dwarves choked on their own black fumes and starved in the dust. It took centuries for the land to recover and become the beautiful and savage countryside that now surrounds Falconís Hollow. Droskarís Crucible was a monastery devoted to worshiping the Dark Smith.

No other kobold patrols from the crags, or the fringe, or whatever the kobolds call it, show up while the cleric and mage meditate. Severe scratching noises comes from the barricaded shrine doors. It seems apparent that whatever lies within, wants out badly.

With meditation over, the companions gather at the stairs that lead down into darkness.

I need a marching order and a source of light. The effects of the poison on Cord has worn away.  Appartently, the goo leaves the victim with eventual severe sluggishness(-DEX) if used correctly.

Cord lit the torch and held it aloft.  "I have five more of these," he said, setting on the stone while he stowed his tinder box and shouldered his pack.

"We can see if we'll need more than one at a time but we need to get back up here before they run out."  He retrieved the torch in his left hand and spear in his right.  "We have that much time to find the kids."

"Karok," he asked the dwarf.  "Could you lead us down?  I'll be right behind you."

"I have a knife if the spear breaks," Cord said, touching the pommel of the dagger stuck through his belt.  The obsidian dagger filled the scabbard on the other side of his belt, replacing the one he'd thrown into the night after Jeva.  He'd looked the next morning but it was a lost cause.  Throwing things at night in the woods meant losing things in the woods.  It was a nice knife, too.
