Chapter X - (Sideline) Cord gathers firewood
Cord steps from the cottage into the dimly lit glade.  The rain continues to come down, though not quite as intense as when it first started some ten or fifteen minutes ago.  The woodsman sloshes through the grass to the tree line and circles around looking for firewood.  Unfortunately, it appears the kobolds have already stripped the immediate area of fallen wood.  Perhaps he will step deeper into the wooded vale and search, but first he gathers up eight of the kobold spears and piles them in the doorway, just inside.

Does Cord go back to the wood line?  Does he enter the wood?

Chapter X - (Sideline) Cord gathers firewood
Cord headed back out to see what else he could find.  He deliberately chose the direction they had come from, assuming that if there were any threat still lurking, it would be more likely in the wood they had not yet traversed.

Nevertheless, he didn't delve any deeper than a few dozen feet into the wood and kept the beacon of their fire in sight as the darkness grew heavy.  Lost in the woods at night on this side of the river was not something he was eager to experience.

Chapter X - (Sideline) Cord gathers firewood
The air is thick with humidity and the overhead clouds darken the under brush flooring of the forest.  The hairs on the back of the woodsman's arms and neck rise suddenly.  Something is amiss.  Something foul smelling is near. A smell like wet fur.. or a wet dog lingers. What had he been thinking?  Coming out here unprotected and without a weapon? Well, he had a chunk of a limb he can use as a club if need be. Cautious and wary now, he moves slower and picks up a couple of more pieces of limb, then he smells it.  Bile rises unbidden from his gut as he gets a familiar nauseating whiff of defecation mixed with blood.  Gore.  He pushes through a stand of saw leaf and there, on the ground is a very dead kobold.  One arm has been torn off, and the midsection has been opened and emptied.  The  kobold's head is nearly torn away from the neck.

The way he died... so .... familiar....

Chapter X - (Sideline) Cord gathers firewood
Cord slowly backed away from the macabre scene with the bundele he had.  He'd decide whether this kobald had been coming or going once he'd made it back to the hut.  Right now, he attempted to devote the entirety of his concentration to eyes and ears.  Whatever did this was not something he wanted to engage in the dark, or the light for that matter.

He still had a pair of daggers in his belt, but hoped not to need them.

Chapter X - (Sideline) Cord gathers firewood
From the direction in which Cord had come, and seemingly from the cottage itself, comes the most shrill feminine scream.... the type that Cord can remember all too vividly from his nightmares.  The firelight can still be seen from inside the cottage. It sounds like a warning... danger approaches! Is someone warning him?  Is someone there in trouble?  Were they all in trouble?

Cord turns, being drawn to the noise coming from the cottage, his senses already on edge. He has barely moved and it attacks as if springing from shadow itself. So quick and quiet... even that close, the thing surprises Cord! A scrawny wolf like humanoid... a WEREWOLF in familiar tattered girl's clothing leaps from the brush! It swipes long claws at Cord and bites at his neck. Fortunately, Cord's senses alerted him in time to turn and twist out of the path of the lunging beast.

Werewolf has surprise!  Hence, this pre-round attack.

"Jeva don't do this!" Cord shouted, hoping to deter the girl and alert the others.  "We can help you!"

He tried to sidle back toward the hut without turning his back on the weregirl.  If she lunged again, he'd try to throw the firewood in her face as a shield against her attack.  He didn't want to hurt her.

Cord Gorstag rolled 7 using 1d10.  Jeva round 1 Initiative.
Cord Gorstag rolled 2 using 1d20+1.  Firewood Face throw Round 1.
And... that went poorly.
Now let's see if he can prevent her from attacking him in the first place this round with a Charisma check on his deterrence attempt to change her attitude from hostile.
Cord Gorstag rolled 15 using 1d20.  Charisma check Jeva round 1.
Really needed to reverse those two rolls but 15 does succeed against a raw charisma check.

Chapter X - (Sideline) Combat Round 1635.1
Missing Cord, the were-beast, or Jeva, crashes through the saw leaf, then bounds back into view.  Beady yellow eyes glare at Cord malevolently and he can see there is intelligence behind them.  Teeth are bared and the beast growls low, the sound sending shivers through the woodsman.

Cord's words seem to have some sort of effect, for the creature does not attack immediately, but glares at the man for a second while growling.  Its chest rises and falls with each breath.  It stands taller than Cord with a feminine look to its visage.

Jeva sniffs the air suddenly.

"You smell of her." the creature growls.  The words are barely discernible from its maw of teeth.  "My last meal."

Suddenly, it throws back its head and howls!

Only a moment passes before a distant howl is heard in reply.

Chapter X - (Sideline) Combat Round 1635.1
Cord thought that maybe this wasn't Jeva.  It had said he smelled like her last meal and those he knew were accounted for except for her.  He'd thought it was Jeva from the clothing but he could be wrong.  this creature seemed taller, much taller, but had seemed to respond to her name.  As if this was Jeva but not Jeva at the same time.

"It's going to be all right Jeva," he said. continuing to back toward the hut.  "Just like before, we're here to help.  Remember near the river where I carried you up the stairs?  We don't want to hurt you."

Cord Gorstag rolled 2 using 1d10.  Jeva round 2 Initiative.
Cord Gorstag rolled 20 using 1d20.  Charisma check Jeva round 2.
Blah. Hopefully the charisma check wasn't necessary and she's still nice.
Cord Gorstag rolled 21 using 1d20+1.  Firewood Face throw Round 2.
In any other game, 2 in a row would be great.

Chapter X - (Sideline) Combat Round 1635.2
Jeva sniffs the air again and a long tongue licks its teeth,  "Yeessssss... same blood as she."

Suddenly, the werewolf tenses with a snarling growl and Cord sees it coming before it happens.  He throws the pile of limbs and dry wood at the beast as it lunges forward.  The dry wood does minor damage, and the werewolf swipes away most of it.  Cord is too slow this time. He throws his arms up defensively and Jeva manages to snap her jaws on one arm(-5). Canine teeth rip a nasty gash along its length and Cord can feel a scraping of the bone.
