Once she is ready to depart, Greer walks with Adler to his truck, remaining quiet as they leave the yard. When they reach the parked vehicle, he gently tugs Adler to him and embraces her tightly, holding her close for several silent minutes.

True to her word, Wells closes Breaker's. Once she and Zoe have Curran settled on a fold out cot in the office, they set to work, giving each attendee what they want to drink, then setting out two platters of nachos before grilling burgers and chicken.

Drinks refreshed and food served, the group settles at the largest table near the center of the room. Zoe remains behind the bar, cleaning, restocking, and occasionally looking in on Curran.

Wells takes a chair beside Lynch. The former soldier takes a sip of beer and frowns. "I don't want to push too hard, not after what we faced this morning, but I think we need to keep the momentum up. Take action while these people are still off balance, trying to recover from the loss of their chief enforcer."

He glances at Tripp, Bey, and Wells. "We had talked about hitting Angel House next. The shelter serves as one of the Rain group's primary headquarters in the city."

Jane felt famished, but she figured it had a lot to do with the lack of adrenaline pumping through her.  They'd had a morning of nervousness, so she'd not eaten since the day before.  Plowing through her nachos without trying to seem like a pig, she kept thinking about Colton's hug and how comforting it had been.

Drifting back to the conversation, she chimed in after Davin.  "Scott told us that because Angel House is an important gathering place for them, that they would be thrown off and disoriented if we destroyed it.  I've got a couple of things that might help with that.  First, Scott has these fits where he goes into something of a seizure, but he's still writing and talking.  I think he's connected to them somehow.  They have these weird portal things.  It sounds like magic, but we've seen them work for ourselves.  They're like teleporters.  They take a few weird words to make work and you have to know the name of where you're transporting.  Scott gave us the key to those places, so we could, in theory, use them to get in or get out."

"Or, we could even attempt something riskier, and teleport in something that would do that for us -- like explosives."  She gave Davin a brief glance.  "We'd have to clear the building first, of course.  There are innocent people in there, clueless staff and the homeless.  We're trying to destroy the building, not blow up people."

"Scott also said something else in one of his bouts -- Cameras only in the daytime.  I don't know if that means Angel House, or not, but it's a good guess that it might.  They have security there, cameras and all.  We have a layout of their plans, but we'd still have to deal with the cameras.  If they don't record during the evening, then that'd give us a way in without being seen.  Assuming that's what Scott meant, anyway."
  She shrugged.

Greer takes a sip of his Jack and Coke and picks up a chip, making no move to eat it. "Given what we know about some of these things' vulnerability to sunlight, the cameras only being active during the day makes sense. That's the only time the hoods have to be on guard. At night, I'm guessing that many of them are absent. They're probably out patrolling the streets and the other shelters. Maybe distributing Rain."

Wells cracks open a bottle of Samuel Adams. "So, these circles link together. You step in one, speak the words, and you're at another location. I'm no tactical expert, but if we can get in using one of those, it seems like the best way to achieve surprise. Even with Severin dropped, I doubt these guys would anticipate us knowing how to use them."

She takes a sip of her beer. "But, is there a safe circle that we can use to get in?"

"Safe?  Probably not.  It's a tossup as to who is using them and when.  At night, they'll be less likely to because they can move around freely.  I think they mainly use them for daytime transport to stay out of the sun.  Colton and I found one inside an old house that once belonged to Broden MacGregor.  His foundation still owns it, of course, but it was relatively empty when we were there."

"There's probably one in the Foundation building.  I think Severin used it when we were there.  We also saw the one inside the Flagstone that's across the street.  Someone was there patrolling, but who knows how many hoods might be bedding down there.  With the list that Scott gave us, we could probably figure out where the others are and see if any might be less likely used than any others, but it'll be more of a guess than anything."

Tripp clears her throat. "Several people at this table know that I make it a regular part of my job to play devil's advocate. But seriously, beyond the assertion that this location at Angel House is a hub of activity for these...people and that one of the circles is present, do we actually know what else is there? What exactly we're looking to destroy?"

Lynch shakes his head. "I've watched the place from the outside. Learned its entrances, got a sense of some of the activity on the grounds. But I haven't set foot in the interior."

"Jane had some pretty good ideas about getting us close enough to get a look around. She's a wizard with clothing and make up," Greer says. He looks at Adler, "Maybe that's the plan we need to go with."

She nodded.  "Yes, that was the plan before we decided to focus on Severin.  I lived on the streets for a couple of years, so I know the life.  These places were my life.  I think I can blend us in reasonably well."  She caught Tripp's gaze for a moment before looking to the others.  "We could get a bit of rest, then go in tonight with Davin out there for backup.  Those places fill up and get crowded in the evening when everyone's looking for a bed, so we'll be just another couple of faces in the crowd.  How's that sound to everyone?"

"How about we meet up here in the morning, say around nine? Early enough so you night owls can crash after you share whatever you've learned."

Wells nods in agreement with the idea.

After finishing their meals and drinks, the group goes their separate ways. Lynch speaks to Adler and Greer before they depart, suggesting that they meet a few blocks from the shelter before the pair enter it, so the ex-soldier will know what they look like, in case his intervention is needed. After agreeing to a rendezvous point, Adler and Greer step out of Breaker's into a light, late afternoon rain.

Jane spoke little as Greer drove them back to her apartment, but kept in contact with him, resting her hand on his hand or his leg.  She kept a lookout while he navigated the city streets through the rain, searching for any indication that they were being followed.  Once he'd parked and they were safely inside, she allowed herself to relax, touching the symbol that she'd carved into the door frame as if taking strength from it.

Her apartment was as they left it: Chinese takeout boxes piled in the trash, empty beer and soda cans on the counter, case files scattered on the table in her office, the sheets on her bed rumpled and twisted.  Though it had only been half a day since they'd left, the place felt far emptier to her.  Perhaps it was because of what they'd done and what she'd seen.

After a brief glance around, she grabbed her makeup kit from the closet and hauled it into the living room.  Sitting down on the couch, she put her arms on her knees and sighed.  "Rest first, hmm?  Then we can get to this?  It's going to take quite a bit and you aren't going to like it.  We're going to have to smell bad."

Greer sits down beside Adler. Grinning, he says, "Dirty I can handle. When I first graded into narcotics, I had to do a few undercover stings at crack houses in English Woods. To be convincing, you have to look, and smell, the part."

He puts his arm around her shoulders. "Rest first, definitely. If we didn't have a genuine need to press the attack, I would have insisted that we take the rest of the day to recuperate. What we...especially you and Scott, faced this morning was...terrifying. Even with all we'd learned, there was still part of me that wasn't certain it would work, or that we could pull it off."

He rubbed her shoulder affectionately, his eyes going to the floor. "You handled that whole thing perfectly, going out there to meet him. But it still scared the living hell out of me."

"I think we just need to take a break, while the opportunity presents itself."
He glances at her. "Anything you need? Tylenol? Another stiff drink? I don't mind making a run to get whatever you want."

"No, no I'm fine.  A couple of beers isn't going to kill me -- just enough to take the edge off.  I'll be ready to go after a nap." She leaned against him, looking down.  "I was scared as hell, myself.  I felt naked out there.  Even though I knew that you guys were backing me up, it was still unnerving to face down a cowboy that lived in a time when survival was by the gun.  Still, he knew my voice and I'd already captured his interest once.  I figured I could do it again."

"Kylie, though, that was a new snag.  It makes me fear for all of the others that are tied into this and don't know it.  What about Scott's other friends and family?  What about the rest?  I think our anonymity is the only thing sparing us from having to make that choice, or watching our friends die."  Her hand rested lightly on his leg.  "I'm glad he's dead.  Severin was their Ace, their enforcer, and we don't have to worry about him any longer.  He's killed so many people.  He deserved to die."  She didn't mention his brother, but then she knew she didn't have to.  It'd already be on his mind.

"You know... back there... when I was walking out to meet him, I half expected you to protest and try to take my place.  Thank you for not doing that.  Thank you for trusting my instincts and my plan." Finally glancing up, she sought his gaze.  "I respect you for that.  I don't need chivalry or anyone patronizing me.  I need a partner that treats me as an equal, and you do."

Greer took Adler's hand in his own, a thoughtful smile on his face. "Here's the truth. You were the right person to handle it. I'm not too proud to admit my limitations. I couldn't have engaged him the way you did. Even knowing about his...abilities, I'm not sure I would have stayed patient enough to make him come to me the way you did. You want me to get a dealer talking business? Build a working relationship with people on the street? I can do that. But I can't do what you did back there. I'd jump the gun."

He meets her gaze. "You are my equal. In some ways, like that situation today, you're my better. I trust your insights, your skills, your intelligence. I trust you." He grins. "You know one of the times where I knew I was falling for you? When you punched the hell out of my arm in front of Haldeman's. You don't hesitate to tell me when I'm wrong. When my thinking's off. When my temper's eclipsed everything else. I need that, Jane."

"I want someone who walks shoulder to shoulder with me. Someone who's strong. You are."
He glances down at their clasped hands. "And you're a lot of other things besides. Amazing things. I've never met anyone like you, Jane. I'm really glad I did."

She returned his grin, though found herself blushing.  "Okay, okay.  Don't go getting sappy on me.  You gave me a gun today, so that's more than enough to get into my pants.  Save the romance for our first date.  You know, when all of this shit is done and we actually get a first date."  If we get a first date.  Jane wasn't going to get her hopes up.  It was better to keep her expectations low and hope that they both survived taking down Black Rain.

"And just for the record, anytime you need me to punch the hell out of you, I'll be glad to."
She chuckled and snuggled in close to give him a kiss on the jaw.  "I hope every time that bruise pains you, you'll think of me."

A yawn interrupted whatever she was going to say next.  "Man, I'm wiped.  Seems like a long time ago we had that fluffy hotel mattress and room service.  Let's get a quick nap in.  Extra curricular activities come later."

Greer kisses her cheek. "No argument. I feel like I could sleep for days, not hours."

He draws her close and within a matter of minutes, both of them are deeply asleep.
