XIV - Wardance
Davin Lynch departs before dawn. He sends a text message to Adler assuring her that he will touch base with her and Greer before noon, after he's had sufficient opportunity to scout the East End thoroughly and locate a spot that will best serve their purposes.

Autumn Wells picks up on the second ring when Adler calls. She confirms that Scott Curran is at the apartment on the Lock and Key Self Storage site and agrees to meet Adler and Greer there in an hour. She tells Adler that Curran hasn't offered any new information recently, but has made a couple of statements that haven't made since to her or Zoe. For the most part, he has wanted to be alone.

The morning sky is blue, the air cool, as Greer drives north of downtown. Adler catches the narcotics detective frequently checking his rear view mirror, but by the time they reach their destination, it is clear that they aren't being followed.

Lock and Key Self Storage sits on Estelle Street, half a block west of Auburn. The facility is relatively nondescript, made up of rows of cinderblock buildings that house storage units of varying sizes, each secured by a garage style door, all of which are painted bright blue. In the back, a row of tall covered parking units offer space for recreational vehicles. Wells is leaning against a silver Toyota RAV 4 when Adler and Greer arrive. She leads them to a spiral staircase external to the office building which leads to the apartment upstairs.

Scott Curran's quarters are neat, but sparsely furnished. A double bed occupies one corner of the room and a steel desk and chair are just right of the doorway. A small kitchen holds a refrigerator and microwave and a television, the screen gray with dust, sits to the right of the bed. Above the desk are tacked numerous sketches. Some are of people, primarily faces, and Adler quickly recognizes approximations of Kylie Rowe, Emily Curran, Aiden Lynch, and Manny Velasquez among them. Others are of specific places, including Reliable Undercar Care, Manny's Shop, and Curran's old apartment building. Some of the other depicted locations are more disturbing: dark stretches of tunnels, one of the cult gathering areas with its circular gate, and an underground lake swallowed in darkness.

Curran is seated on the bed, dressed in a black t-shirt and jeans when the three visitors arrive. Something in his expression suggests to Adler that he anticipated their arrival. He nods in greeting, looking at her expectantly.

"Hi, Scott.  Good to see you again."  She dropped her satchel onto the desk and hopped up to perch on the edge, leaving the chair for Greer.  "We've got a lot to share.  First, we found the Foundation's library and learned how to unmake Severin.  We actually met him last night and got away without dying or being dragged into their cult.  It was close, but we made it.  Anyway, we need your help for the next part."

She launched into the details they'd uncovered in Revelations, including how the spell worked and what they were going to need for it.  She also explained his part in the endeavor, summoning Severin when the time was right.  "Davin is scouting us an area right now where we might draw him into a trap.  You think you can help us?  We can have something in place for you to escape right away after the summoning, if you want.  You're an important part of this plan, and we want to keep you safe.  We aren't going to be able to destroy their temple without you."

Curran listens quietly as Adler speaks, nodding as she asks her question. "They're afraid. They know that someone has uncovered their secrets. Their greatest protection is the shadows. Being unknown. They know that's in danger now."

"If Severin knows I'm there, he'll come. He's desperate to find me. I'm the only one who's ever escaped him. I've seen...I've seen everything. But, I don't want to run when he arrives. He's the reason I'm like this. The reason I lost...everyone. I want to be there when he's stopped. I want to help."

"I don't know if you'd consider it, but I'd like to be a player in this too," Wells says, "These monsters almost took Zoe. And they've kept us under siege, in one way or another, for almost a year now. I took down bail jumpers of all shapes and sizes for ten years. I'm a good shot. I can handle myself in a fight."

"I'm sure you can," she said to Autumn, "but you have to understand that this isn't just a fight.  It's a fight for survival.  None of us knows if we're going to make it out alive.  If you can come to terms with that, then you're welcome to join us.  We could use all the people we can get.  We have no idea if Severin will come alone, or if he'll have more people with him.  If the ritual works, we can unmake him, make him mortal, and put a bullet through his brain.  Anyone else that comes with him isn't going to go down easy."

She looked back to Scott.  "We know that the older ones can be hurt by sunlight and even UV light.  We used that to our advantage last night.  However, we didn't get a chance to try it on Severin.  Do you know if he's vulnerable to sunlight?  If we find the right location, we can set something up during the day to draw them out, which would give us the advantage."

Wells nods. "I don't have a problem with the risk. I've had a couple of close brushes with death already, thanks to these monsters. I've gotten a good idea of how ruthless they are, from Scott and some of the homeless people I've met. But if we don't take a stand, sooner or later they'll find him, and me and Zoe as well. I'd rather take the fight to them, not keep trying to hide."

Curran shakes his head. "Severin can walk in daylight without being hurt. He's different from the others. Daylight won't kill him, but it will take some of his strength. He isn't as powerful during the day."

He meets Adler's gaze, his expression serious. "If he thought he had found me, he would come, no matter what time it was."

She nodded to Autumn.  "Alright.  If you have any weapons, guns, ammo, body armor, bring it all.  We may just need it."

Leaning forward on her knees, she regarded Scott for a moment.  "So I'm curious to know how he'd know it was you.  Can they tell who is summoning them?  If not, you could just show yourself.  I'd also like to know about those necklaces that they give out to their prospective members -- if they know or can tell who it is that's wearing it.  If not, we could use the one that we got from the Minister and that might draw him in, as well."

Curran frowns. "I don't know if Severin can sense who's called him, but he can sense me somehow. It's why I try not to stay outside of a place that's warded with Elder Signs for very long. There have been a couple of times he's come close to finding me. I think he's always looking...somehow."

He shakes his head. "I'm not sure they can tell who is wearing the necklaces. But there aren't many of them made. There are only a few people that serve them that aren't...changed."

Curran nods slowly. "I saw the Minister do it once. I just...I don't remember when. He traced the symbol on the amulet twice with his finger. Flickers of light came from the necklace right after."

"Alright, we'll text you and let you know when this is going down.  We have to find a good location, first.  Davin is out scouting right now.  He's grabbing the dirt for us for the ritual and we're supposed to meet him later.  If he finds a spot and we get everything in order, we could be doing this as early as tomorrow.  We need to do it as soon as possible.  Severin is going to be looking for us, too, and we can't risk getting into another gunfight with him while he's impervious to bullets.  Plus, if we take him out, then you'll have a lot less to worry about.  He's their protector, and their main hunter.  They'll be crippled without him until they can make another.  We're going to take them out before that happens."

"The basic idea is to get Severin to walk across the ritualized earth to make him mortal.  If he gets too close, we can throw it at him directly, but we really don't want to let it get that close.  Then, when he's mortal, Davin can put a bullet in his head, or we can fill him with lead, whichever comes first."

Glancing at the wall, her attention shifted briefly to the sketches that Scott had drawn.  She frowned and dug through her bag to find her pen.  Sliding off the desk, she went from one sketch to the other, writing something below each portrait.  When she was done, they were clearly labeled, with each likeness sporting their first name:  Kylie, Emily, Aiden, Manny.  Satisfied at her work, she looked back to Scott and Autumn.

"You two have any issues that need to be raised before we go through with this?  Questions?  Concerns?  Ideas?"

Curran stands, moving to the drawings that Adler has labeled. He studies them for a long moment. "Severin. He'll want me alive. He'll want to take me to the Speaker. To finish what I escaped."

He gazes at the pictures a moment longer. "You should let him come to me. Even if something happens. It...it will be okay."

Wells frowns. "Scott, we're all here to fight. If we can, we're going to make sure no one's lost. We want to put a stop this shit for everyone."

Curran nods. "I know. But, the things in my mind. I'm just...I'm just really tired."

He looks at Adler. "I'll do whatever you need to do to draw him out."

She clicked her pen and pointed it at Scott.  "Okay, but there's one thing that you're going to need to do for me -- not give up.  I'm serious.  You see these people up here."  She waved to his drawings.  "You remember them and they remember you.  This is your finish line.  You're going to be taking a risk, but not at the expense of your life.  I came looking for you, and now that I've found you, I can't have you just giving up.  You're tired of fighting, but I need you to keep fighting until this thing is over.  Just a little longer, Scott.  So don't go taking unnecessary risks thinking that you have nothing to lose.  We need you in this until the end, okay?"

Curran's hand goes to Rowe's sketch. "I won't take any unneeded risks," he assures Adler, "I promise not to disappoint you. I'll do whatever I can to make them stop. I just...I don't want to be a monster anymore."

"Good, that's everyone's goal."  She checked her phone and looked up to Colton.  "We might have a place.  Lynch wants to meet."

She texted Davin.  "Yep, see you there."

"We gotta go.  We'll text you and let you know what's going on as soon as we have the place and know when this is going down."  She looked to Greer.  "Ready?"
