She smiled.  "I was right about you guys -- bartenders really do know everything about everyone.  Thanks for the info.  I gotta scoot.  See you around.  Have a good one."

Pushing off the bar, she gave the bald guy another look and a smile, and headed back down the hallway.  Moving through the main bar area, she gave the bartender there a little wave and exited the club.  Pausing near the doorman, she flashed her card at him.  "Got my credentials.  See you around, Marcus."

Exiting the building, she threw a quick glance around for Greer.

The familiar silhouette of Greer's Ford is nowhere to be seen. Greer himself, however, is a mere half block away, doing his best impression of a drunk seeking support from a nearby wall. The act drops the moment he sees Adler emerge and he meets her halfway, concern lining his face. "Are you all right? How'd it go up there?"

"Well, I'm going to have to start charging you for sex now, because you're dating an escort named Lexi Star."  She grinned.  "Yea, it went okay.  Picked up a few tidbits, made some insinuations, passed out a few BJs, and they let me right through.  What you want to do can't go down at the club, though.  They've got security at the door to pat the girls down.  I also think they have an off-duty cop camping at the bar for security.  Real classy place, though."

"We need to come up with a plan and decide what you really want to do to this guy.  They have a block of hotel rooms reserved for the girls at one of the hotels.  I thought I'd go check them out.  We might be able to set up a grab there, if you want to abduct him.  Or I could set up a camera, have sex with him, and we can use that for leverage."  Her tone implied she was clearly joking.  "He'll be at the club tomorrow night.  I've got a date with him, if I want it.  All I gotta do is show up a little early, and I'll have him to myself in a semi-private booth where I can ply him with booze, feed his ego, and convince him to make off-site party arrangements."

"I mean, I may have to give him a handjob or something, but it'd be worth it, right?" She batted her eyelashes.

Slowly, a gentle grin overtakes Greer's features. He chuckles softly and shakes his head. "I'm just amazed at your poise. The way you keep it together, dealing with a situation like that. Not letting your temper take hold. Using finesse to get the information you need. No way I could do it. No way at all."

Taking her hand, he leads her down the block and around the corner, where she can see his truck parked a short distance away, a few feet outside of a street light's circle of illumination. "I used my phone to do a little fact checking while you were up there. Tyler's been a candidate for retirement for about four years now. With his money, he's got no reason other than pride to stay on the bench."

"I'd originally thought about grabbing him like an old school felon. Wear a mask, hustle him into a car, tie him to a chair and do my level best to scare the shit out of him."

"But now...I'm not sure. Maybe he should know who's onto him. Be fully aware that if he doesn't take a graceful exit, there's someone who's ready to drop a bomb at the Department. Demolish his reputation and upend who knows how many of his decisions."

He sighs as they reach the vehicle. "I don't know what the best approach is. Either way, I want a third person involved in the shakedown. Not Davin. He might suddenly decide to blow Tyler's head off. Another cop. Kindel would do it but honestly, Laura's one of the coolest heads I know. She's who I'd choose."

"Did you want to take a look at the hotel?" he asks. As they climb into the truck, he looks over at her with a curious frown. "Lexi...Star?"

"I watch a lot of porn," she said, straight-faced.  Settling into her seat, she buckled in and finally cracked a smile.  "Oh, come on -- you never played the stripper name game?  First street you lived on the name of your first pet?  Mine was Lexington and Princess Starshine, my hamster.  Actually, that's a lie.  I grew up on Doc Reeves Road, but Doc Reeves Starshine is not a sexy stripper name; it's a Sci-Fi character. So I picked the first big city I ever visited -- Lexington."

"Let's go check out the hotel.  I want to see if I can get into the rooms and get some pictures of the layout, exits, that sort of thing.  Tripp is a good choice, by the way.  We should definitely bring her in on this and see what she thinks."

Greer starts the truck, steering out onto the rain soaked street. He frowns. "That means my stripper name would be Henshaw Duke."

The facade of the 21c Museum Hotel is somewhat deceptive. As a whole, the building has the appearance of a tall, forties style office building, constructed in red brick with nondescript, rectangular windows. Passing it by on the way to another destination, it would be easily lost in the haze of the myriad other structures that make up downtown. However, upon closer inspection, its identity becomes more obvious. The theater style overhang above the entrance, the minimalist sculptures in the lobby windows and, most distinctive of all, the chandelier hanging from a tall metal support on the sidewalk in front of the hotel, all give hints to the 21c's unique and elegant interior.

Greer pulls the Ford into an empty space less than a block away. Tapping on his phone, he shakes his head. "A five star hotel with a contemporary art museum inside." he says, gazing at the screen. "Well, this is one place I'll never set foot in unless a cartel member makes a reservation."

He looks to Adler. "Do you think mentioning the McCrea Club will get you access to the rooms that are on reserve?"

"Hmph.  I bet Henshaw Duke wears a leopard print banana hammock."

----

She leaned toward the window to have a look at the hotel / museum and smiled.  "This place has class.  You'd probably move too fast and knock over a vase or something."  Digging her McCrae credentials out of her pocket, she waved them at Colton. "I doubt I even have to mention them.  Just show this card and they'd give me a reserved room for club use.  The club pays for everything and takes the cost of the member dues, then divvies up the profit to the girls.  Very smooth operation."

"I'm going to just slip in, get some photos, and slip out on pretense of planning out my hot date with the judge.  Mmm, I bet I can get him to dress up in his robe and tell me how guilty I am before he dolls out the punishment."
She was having so much fun teasing Colton.

Leaving Greer blinking and struggling for words, Adler crosses the street in the steady rain. Entering the lobby, she finds herself in a sizeable room with  contemporary furnishings, painted in clean white, in the manner of an art museum. A handful of tasteful sculptures take up a portion of the floor space and abstract oil paintings are neatly arranged on the walls. To the right, Adler can see elevators, a broad staircase with ornate iron railings, and a hallway that leads to the hotel restaurant, bar, and gallery.

A young woman behind the reservations desk asks if she can help Adler. When the private detective presents her identification from the McCrea Club, the clerk excuses herself, returning a few moments later with a tall bearded man she identifies as one of the desk managers.

The manager takes Adler to one side. "Miss Star, do you and a guest require a room this evening, or are you setting up something for a later time?" he asks, "I do have one of the blocked rooms available for your use tonight, if needed."

Jane smiled at the man.  "I do not wish to reserve the room just yet.  This is my first visit to your fine establishment, and I wish to survey the room so that I can ensure my guest and I are comfortable.  I just need a brief look so that I'll know what to bring and have some idea of how I'd like to set up.  I would also like to see your room service menu, if it wouldn't be too much trouble?"

The manager withdraws a long leather wallet from the inner pocket of his jacket. Opening it, he removes a plastic card, a room key, which he hands to Adler. "It is Room 317. Feel free to look around as long as you like. A room service menu will be beside the telephone."

"If you have any questions, or need anything, please call my direct extension. It is 1105. My name is Michael."

Room 317 sits three doors down from the end of one of the third floor hallways and access to a stairwell that leads to an exit at the rear of the building, through which a courtyard and the alley can be reached. Like the museums it resembles so strongly, the hotel's corridors are hushed, almost silent. Adler only encounters a handful of people during her journey upstairs, the majority of them staff members.

The room is divided into two sections. The front portion consists of a sitting area with a small wet bar and refrigerator. The rear holds the bedroom, much of which is taken up by a queen sized bed and freestanding wardrobe. The bathroom is spacious, with a tub and plentiful counter space around the sink.

The carpet is a dark blue, a strong contrast to the white walls and the rich, chestnut color of the mission style furniture. The art in the room is tasteful, primarily cubist in style. Picking up the room service menu from the small writing desk that holds the phone, Adler can see that the fare ranges from simple to extravagant, offering American, Italian, and French dishes. Unsurprisingly, most selections from the bar can also be delivered to the room.

Once she was inside with the door closed behind her, Jane used her phone to take photos of the suite, trying to get all the angles.  She also took a picture of the menu and wine list.  Walking out into the hallway, she glanced up in search of surveillance on her way to the back stairs.  Outside, she surveyed the courtyard, mentally mapping the layout to the alley.

In only a few minutes, she'd returned to the front desk where she left the key.  "Thanks a bunch.  If I end up needing it, I'll try to call ahead."

Back outside, she pulled up her hood and trotted toward Greer's truck, climbing inside to get out of the rain.  Immediately digging into her satchel, she pulled out her notepad and pen and scribbled down a rough layout of the hotel, the room, and the other exits. "Okay, I think we're good.  Nice place, by the way.  Maybe I should bring you here as one of my clients."  She grinned.  "Did you text Laura, yet?"

At the bottom of the stairwell, Adler notes that the courtyard lies to the right of the door, while the exit to the alley is only ten feet away, straight ahead, a handful of steps beyond the stairs. She also sees that a room key is needed to unlock the hotel door, but the alley door opens with a push bar.

Moving to and from the third floor, Adler observes cameras in the lobby and on the third floor landing. She also notes cameras in all of the corridors containing guest rooms, with the exception of the hall where room 317 is located. Conspicuously, no camera is present there.

Still trying, with mixed success, to keep up with Adler's teasing, Greer pauses at Adler's comment about the hotel, then smiles and nods. "I called her. Told her I needed her help with a delicate matter. Something close to home," he answers, "No surprise, she volunteered to assist. Asked if we could meet up with her tomorrow around ten."

He starts the truck. "You know, the sad truth is, the last few minutes I was waiting, I was thinking about how I would beat the living hell out of Tyler if he laid a hand on you. But then, I realized how stupid that was. If he tries anything, you're the one who'll put his head through a wall."

His expression shows embarrassment. "I just, you know, was trying to be protective...and chivalrous...and all that..."

His voice trails off. He is silent for a moment, then adds, "Maybe more sophisticated, too. Just a little."

"Awww, you like me.  You really like me."  She leaned across the gap between them to plant a kiss on his cheek. "For the record, I like that about you.  It's nice to know that someone cares enough to have my back.  And you can bet your ass that I'd do the same for you.  If any of those club hoes tried grinding on you, I'd snatch the weave right out of their hair."

She smiled.  "So we need to come up with a plan that doesn't involve me getting groped by an ancient scumbag judge.  You want to go back to my place and brainstorm?  Both about this and Angel House?"

Adler's kiss prompts an unguarded smile from Greer. "Yeah, I do," he answers, "A lot."

He pulls out into the rain soaked street. Making good time through relatively thin evening traffic, he reaches the east side of downtown within ten minutes and, shortly afterward, is pulling into the parking lot adjacent to Adler's building.

As the pair enter the welcome warmth of the apartment, the staccato rhythm of the rain increases, the deluge gaining strength, the streaks of moisture on the windows reducing the view of the surrounding neighborhood to a watery blur.

Greer shoulders out of his jacket, placing it across the back of a nearby chair. "Where should we start? The guy that needs to be kicked off the bench, or the underground house of horrors?"

"Let's save the judge for when we have Laura around to use as a sounding board.  Let's talk about Angel House and the compound -- what we know and what we don't.  So, we know that the basement is a key area and houses MacGregor's own office.  But the boiler room was unseen, but presumably important.  I don't know about you, but it seems like the guy that came looking for MacGregor sounded tired of putting up with the old man's attitude.  He said the Orator wanted to talk to him, didn't he?  And that the Orator made him?  So safe to assume that MacGregor wasn't the first.  He was approached for a specific task, just like Horn."

"I don't have any ideas on how to take out Angel House.  I guess it depends on what is in the boiler room.  We might have to give it another shot.  Do you think it could be connected to the other building we explored?  That one has to get destroyed, down to the last brick.  No one in there to worry about unless we try to rescue their victims in hopes that they, and Scott, would be returned to normal once we end all of this.  Otherwise, it just needs to explode or something.  Too much death in there to do otherwise.  Too much opposition, too."

"I definitely got the sense that MacGregor's visitor was pretty unhappy. I'm guessing that his boss, the Orator, was too." He paces a few steps, his hands in his pockets. "Once we started to really understand the Black Rain organization, how old its roots were, I guess I just assumed that MacGregor was the driving force behind all of it."

He looks over at her. "But you're right. It honestly sounds like MacGregor's another lackey. Another...I don't know, construct. Someone shaped to do this organization's bidding."

"So, I guess that means the Orator is the one who's been in charge of it all from the beginning. But...who is he? Someone from England, where MacGregor came from?"

He shakes his head. "If it's the same one from the concert, the way he...stretched out when he stood. He's definitely one of the monstrous ones."

Halting his pacing, he takes a seat at Adler's table. "I thought about the boiler room. Where it might lead. It could connect to the other building or...even to the subway. If we really want to disrupt things at Angel House, we may need to figure out a way to block it off. Prevent access to at least part of it." He sighs."But it would probably be best to get a look at what's in there beforehand. So we know how to tackle it. But if we do another recon, I honestly think we need a couple of more people with us."

"And you're right. That other building was like a...roost or something. A hive. I think it needs to meet up with a little old fashioned arson."

She snapped her fingers.  "The subway is a good guess.  It would give them a way to get down there without having to travel to the old entrance.  The tunnels run right under Central, which is only a block away from the shelter.  If MacGregor built Angel House back in the day, he could have easily put in an underground structure, like the other building, that would allow them to travel without being out in the sun.  He doesn't have to worry about it, but the rest do."

"Scott said that the boiler room is the biggest gathering place, besides the subway.  We need to destroy it, too.  He said it would leave them reeling.  The Speaker, that's got to be the Orator.  So he made MacGregor and then he and MacGregor came over here and brought in Horn.  I don't know who the guy that came looking for MacGregor was unless he was one of the hoods.  Scott only mentioned the three that ran the organization.  The rest he said were turned by that poison and were slowly decaying."  She started drawing out a chart of their organization on a sheet of paper, shooting off lines to indicate the elements they knew about and adding question marks to those that still remained a mystery.

"It sounded like there was something of a separation in their organization.  It makes me want to find MacGregor and talk to him, even more.  Scott said that something else was keeping him alive -- tricks, spells, that sort of thing.  We saw they have some kind of magic, as ludicrous as it sounds.  That means we're going to have to be extra careful with MacGregor.  He could have some voodoo BS that we can't anticipate or guard against."

"So... let's bullet point this, in no particular order.  One, we need to destroy the boiler room.  Two, we need to torch the... I'll call it the incubation chamber.  Three, we need to take down the Judge and remove his influence, plus get info on how he contacts MacGregor.  Four, maybe optional, but is all about MacGregor, maybe getting him alone to get info on the Orator's weaknesses or even take him out.  Five, deal with the Orator.  Six, destroy the shrine in the subway."

"Anything else?"

Greer takes a long look at the list. Slowly, he shakes his head. "No, I think that's pretty complete. It looks pretty daunting. A real gauntlet. At least some of the goals overlap. The boiler room and the incubation area, for instance."

He pats his hand on the table. Looking up at Adler, he says, "I wonder. Do you think that some of MacGregor's defiance might come from some of the reversals they've had lately? The Minister, the band, Severin. I mean, I'm not saying that he's struggling with the organization solely because of those things. But maybe they've emboldened him a little. He's seen the group isn't invincible. Some of their cracks are starting to show."

"If there's any way Tyler can connect us to MacGregor somehow, I'd really like to try to talk to him prior to any raids. Even if he only gives a few slivers of information about the Orator, or the layout underground, or...well, anything, it could prove extremely valuable."
He shakes his head. "Of course, that's if he'll speak to us at all."

He glances back at the paper and frowns. "Actually, you did miss one. You need to add, 'Let Colton take me to O'Bryon's when this is all over and get me drunk on Guinness and Jameson, and...'" He looks up at her. "Aren't you going to write this down?"

Her lips twitched in amusement.  Silently, she wrote it down.  "There.  Happy?  Now it's in the plan and has to be accomplished.  I guess there's no backing out now."  She huffed in fake annoyance and threw her hands up in the air.  "I was just planning on using you for your contacts and sex, but I guess you caught me, so I can't just dump you the minute all this is over."

Still smirking, she looked at him thoughtfully.  "The Irish conundrum gives us a limited time to accomplish everything we need to accomplish.  Four or five days, you said.  I have a date with the Judge tomorrow at the club.  I don't know if I can get him to the hotel all in the same night.  He might not like me.  He might be wary of new girls.  Who knows?  But if I can, then we should have a plan on how we go about getting information out of him tomorrow night.  If he delays, we may have to keep going without worrying about him, or take more drastic measures."

"If we count today, that's two days already by the time we get info about MacGregor, provided we can get the judge talking tomorrow.  If we can find MacGregor the day after that?  If we can find him.  That's day three.  Day four?  Torch Angel House and the incubation chamber?"

"Actually, I did forget something."  She wrote down 'test out the gate'"That's something we should try tomorrow during the day.  Maybe take Davin along."

After a moment, she also wrote down 'What's in the boiler room?'.

A satisfied smile crosses Greer's face as Adler adds the goal to the list, an expression that persists as she teases him.

He nods as he listens to her thoughts on the schedule. "I agree. If we can't bag Tyler tomorrow, then we leave him and concentrate on Angel House and the subway. My only hope with the judge was that, if he is a significant part of the organization's bankroll, chasing him away from The Orator and company might prevent the Irish thugs from committing to the job by jeopardizing their paycheck. But that's only if Tyler is shouldering a lot of the cost."

He returns his attention to the list. "So we meet up with Laura in the morning, hammer out a strategy for the hotel. Then, we snag Davin and test drive one of the circles. After that, you're off to the McCrea Club."

"Busy day tomorrow."

"I'm sure a real escort would have an even busier day," she observed casually.  "Don't forget about the police file that Taggart mentioned.  Are you going to have time to do that tomorrow, or will you get Laura or Kindel to risk having a look?  We could always put off the gate testing until the day after, if we need to.  We aren't going to be hitting Angel House tomorrow, that's for certain, so don't have to do the test immediately."   She wrote down on the list 'the file' so that they could add it to their goals.

After making a few side notes, her list looked like this:

  • Destroy boiler room. - What's in there (besides Freddy Krueger)?
  • Torch incubation chamber. (Beware facehuggers.)
  • Give His Honor a BJ he'll never forget.
  • OG MacGregor - Is he happy with his long distance service?
  • Take out the Speaker of the House.
  • Shut down the thunder down under.
  • Let Colton get me drunk at O'Bryon's. (As if I'd protest free booze.)
  • Testing the Stargate.
  • Get a peek at the naughty file.

She tapped her pen on the table.  "I was also wondering if you had any contacts that might intercept the Irish before they get here?  Maybe tip someone off so that they're extremely vigilant and on the lookout for hired killers smuggling themselves into the country?"

Greer nods. "I'll head to Central first thing in the morning. In fact, I may make Laura meet me there. It would probably be good to have two sets of eyes looking at the material. She might catch something I don't. Afterward, we can all get together to plan out how to snag Tyler."

"While I'm pulling the file, I'll call a Supervising Agent with Homeland Security I've worked with before on some smuggling issues. She's also been helpful on a couple of human trafficking matters. Nicole Blair. I'll ask her to put some feelers out about the IRA guys. Alert some neighboring agencies."

He examines the list, grinning at Adler's descriptions. "We can play the Stargate test by ear. If we feel confident enough about what we and Laura come up with regarding Tyler, and we've got some spare hours, we can give it a shot tomorrow. Otherwise, like you said, it can wait a day."
