Greer is quiet for a moment. "Maybe I'm not...reflective enough, or something, but I guess, when it showed up, adrenaline took over. I started working on the problem. Wanting to make sure all of us survived somehow. Even as I stood there with Davin's carbine, I was wrestling with the idea of whether gunfire would hurt something made out of...liquid. And if it didn't, what did?"

He shrugs. "Maybe I didn't give myself time to think about the monster too closely. Or it could be that I've just resigned myself to coming across things that don't make any sense in seeing this mess through."

He looks over at her as he pulls onto Central, heading south. "Enough about me. Are you doing okay?"

"Yea, fine.  I can't lie -- some of this shit freaks me out.  That bat creature thing, for one, but some of this stuff is just so outlandish that it doesn't translate as real.  Maybe my brain just can't process it or something.  I'm the same as you, though.  I've pretty much resigned myself to seeing stuff that no one should ever see."  She shrugged.  "It is what it is, I guess.  We just gotta push through it."

"I don't guess there's any way to forget what we've seen, much as I'd wish otherwise," Greer says, "but maybe knowing that we've banished it here, prevented any more vulnerable people on these streets from falling prey to such things, will help put the worst of it behind us. Let us get back to some sense of normalcy. I really hope so."

Greer makes a right, the familiar sight of Lynch's old perch coming into view in the distance. "What MacGregor gave you. It's what we need to end this. To shut...Glaaki out of the city. To end its power here. Right?"

"I don't know.  He said as much, but I'm not sure."  She pulled the envelope out of her jacket and opened it, pulling out the contents for inspection.  "I was really hoping he was going to give us a book of magical spells that we could use to summon fireballs at our enemies.  Even levitation would be helpful, at this point.  LeviOsa."

Adler's comment draws a genuine smile from Greer, who remains silent as she examines what MacGregor provided.

The first sheet of paper is a letter, written in MacGregor's tight handwriting.

Miss Adler:

Within, you will find high resolution scans of the pages from The Revelations of Glaaki which give the incantation required to close the gate and bar Glaaki's presence from the city. I have also provided a guide on the correct pronunciation of the words of the working. Be assured that once this is accomplished, Abbott's powers will quickly wane and the artificial life that sustains his followers will end, returning them to the grave where they belong.

The spell must be cast on the shore of the underground reservoir, where Glaaki meets with its followers here. To give you some understanding: Glaaki descended to this world from the stars. When it fell to Earth, it landed within a large, isolated lake in the Severn Valley in England. That place is both its home and its prison. The only way that its influence can reach beyond the valley is if one of its followers builds a gate to another body of water which enables it to travel between the two. Without this gate, Glaaki will be forced to remain in its home across the Atlantic.

Be aware that the reservoir may only be accessed on the new moon, which should occur two days after your receipt of this letter. It is the only time that the door within the subway will appear. I have included the words that must be spoken to open the entrance to it with the pronunciation guide. It probably goes without saying, but you and your associates should come prepared to face significant opposition when you travel into the underground. Abbott will likely marshal whatever forces he can find to guard this last stronghold.

The best of luck to you. I sincerely hope you are successful.

Broden MacGregor

The scans of the pages and the pronunciation guide make up the remainder of the envelope's contents.

"Well, it isn't levitation, but it is a spell to help us shut down the gate."  She read the letter aloud for Colton and then scanned the other documents.  "He really hooked us up.  Too bad that he didn't give us a sleep spell.  We're going to have to fight our way in, naturally.  We've got two days.  We're going to have to figure out what to do during that time, how to stay safe and all.  Their new Severin is going to be looking for us, I'm sure."

"I've got a couple of ideas regarding a safe place to stay," Greer says, "Once we get up to Davin's old office, I'll make a couple of calls."

He glances over at her and grins. "It is too bad about the levitation thing. I could think of a couple of interesting uses for a spell like that."

Tripp greets Adler and Greer at the top of the stairs of the abandoned office building. As on previous visits, the structure is uniformly quiet.

"Everyone's in one piece, more or less," she reports. "Davin had a spare bedroll in his jeep. Laid it out for Harper. She's asleep now. That thing that came out of the waterfall really shook her up. Kindel's had a couple of hits of vodka, courtesy of Autumn. It's settled him. But he's spent the last half hour staring out the window."

"How did your errand go? Did you get what you needed? Any ideas about next moves?"

Jane was grinning when she topped the stairs.  "Yea, MacGregor gave us what we needed to close the gate in the subway.  It's a spell that I think we all should learn.  The new moon is the day after tomorrow.  That's when we have to go down there.  So we've basically got two days to get ready for an all-out war.  In the meantime, Colton thinks we have a place to go where we can stay safe.  We're going to be camping out for the next couple of days together -- all of us -- for safety.  Severin is out there looking for us, so we have to play this smart."

"Any booze left?  I could use a shot, myself."  She fell into step with Laura, moving to find the others.  "You okay?"

Greer takes a few steps away from the staircase, pulling his phone from his jacket pocket. He dials a number, pacing as he waits for an answer.

Tripp nods in the direction of the open office door. "There's plenty. No surprise, Autumn knows a wholesaler."

The two women step inside. Kindel Bey is looking out of the same window that Lynch once used to keep watch on The Cellar. He glances over his shoulder, giving a brief nod before returning to his vigil. Lynch, Wells, and Zoe Fisher are seated together in the left hand corner of the room, talking quietly. Wells waves at Adler as she enters. Against the left hand wall, Merricks is stretched out on a bedroll, apparently fast asleep.

Tripp steps over to an open cardboard box. She reaches down, then hands Adler an unopened bottle of Bushmills. "I'm okay. Really. I mean, there's probably a few nightmares in my immediate future, but I'll deal. I think my survival instinct kicked in. Shelved the rest of what I was experiencing for later reference."

She shrugs. "Terrifying or not, the fact is we blew the damn thing up."

"Hell yeah, we did." She unscrewed the bottle of whiskey and took a swig.  She lifted the bottle in salute.  "Nice job, guys.  Good work with the explosives, Davin.  I know it was chintzy there for a minute, but we got it done.  Unfortunately, that wasn't the difficult part."

She threw a glance around.  "Where's Scott?"

Wells holds up a bottle in salute. Lynch smiles and nods. "I'm just glad everyone made it out in one piece," he replies. He glances over at Merricks' prone form. "More or less."

Tripp points to the doorway. "He's in one of the other offices a couple of doors down," she says, in response to Adler's question about Curran, "He wanted some space. Said he needed a little time with his thoughts. You can look in on him. He won't mind. Me, Autumn, and Davin already have. He's been patient with all of us. Knows we're just concerned."

"Yea, I think I will.  I need to talk to him about a few things."  She took another swig and recapped the bottle.  Giving Laura a friendly smack on the arm, she went off to find Scott.  Finding him in a couple of rooms over, she knocked softly on the door frame. "Hey, you doing okay?"

Curran is standing at the window, gazing out at Downtown, his hands in the pockets of his jeans. He glances back at the sound of Adler's knocking. He regards her for a moment before speaking. "Jane...Adler, right? I've suddenly got a lot of names to keep up with. I'm sorry if it takes me a while to get everyone's down. I'll get there. Promise."

"I owe you a lot. I'm guessing that many people in your profession, they would have tried a few leads and called it finished. Told my sister I was just another casualty of the streets. But you didn't give up. I...saying I'm grateful...it doesn't really do my feelings justice. But...thank you."

"Well, I was getting paid to find you, but yea... I can't just let things go.  And don't think that I'm not going to be charging your sister an arm and and a leg for this case."  She smiled as she joined him at the window.  "Emily sister is really concerned about you.  Whenever you want to talk to her, let me know.  MacGregor told me that the more time you spend with the people from your past, the more you'll remember."

"We go into the subway day after tomorrow.  That's when the new moon will be and the doorway will be visible.  That's our only window to go in.  They're going to be throwing everything at us, of course, so some of us might not make it.  I hope not, but odds aren't good.  If you want to talk to your sister again, or Kylie, or see your friends, now is the time to do it."

Curran nods, his expression thoughtful. "I'll call Emily in the morning. Spend some time with her on the phone. Do my best to help her understand everything that's happened. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll go by Reliable. See Manny and D. I've really missed hanging out with them."

He is quiet for a moment, then shakes his head. "I'm not trying to sound like a coward, but I don't think I could handle talking to Kylie. I mean...my feelings are just the same as they were two years ago. I'd bought her a ring. I was trying to find the right time to ask the question. Having to come face to face with her having moved on with her life...I can't carry that down into the subway with me. I know some of what's down there. I can't face it grieving."

"Yea, I get it.  It's hard enough knowing what we're up against.  Our focus needs to be on finishing this so we can get on with our lives."  She glanced out to the street.  "If you go out there tomorrow, be careful.  They're still looking for us.  Breaker's was being watched.  They have a new Severin, and he's a homicidal maniac, so there's no predicting what he's going to do.  Colton is going to find us a safehouse, a place to crash where we can all stay safe and all stay together."

"It might be best if I just called Manny," Curran says. He grins. "I actually remember his number."

He refocuses on Adler. "When it's time, we need to talk about the subway. I remember...a lot of it. And I need to make sure you're all prepared when we go. The only ones that live down there...well, they can't ever leave the dark."

A deep frown crosses his face. "Wait. Did you say they made another guardian like Severin? They...they can't. I remember reading about it when I broke into the Foundation. The venom that Glaaki uses to make one...it takes almost five hundred years to gestate. The guardian that's been keeping watch in Brichester, in England, was made in something like the twelfth century."

Her eyebrows lifted.  "Really?  Because they stole the body of a murderer that died and Colton thinks he saw him the next day with a group of hoods looking for us at Breaker's.  So if they didn't make him the next Severin, then they definitely did something to him to raise him back from the dead."

Curran sighs. "No, I don't doubt what happened. Or what Colton saw. I guess...I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't know what this new guardian is. What he's capable of. But he has to be different than Severin."

She gave Colton a wave.  "Hey, thanks for the heads up.  We shouldn't hang around here too long, that's for sure."  She looked back to Scott.  "Let's go.  We can worry about this new guy when we get down there.  Unless we break into the library again, we won't know anything about him, and that's too risky now."

He follows her back to Lynch's former camping spot, where the others have already begun conversing.

Even having spent years at Summit, Mets still couldn't sleep at night. Too many years on the street, when the deep of night was when you had to be most wary. There were worse things, he supposed. Old men were supposed to take naps anyway, so being wide awake at one in the morning just ensured he played to type during the day. Clicking on his light, he shuffled the small stack of paperbacks on his nightstand, finally settling on Lisa Gardner. He poured himself a glass of water and opened the book, reading out of a need for distraction rather than genuine interest.

Someone cleared their throat.

He started, looking about, and finding a figure leaning against the wall just alongside the lone window. He blinked. Was he seeing things? His door was locked, the window secured. He could see that neither had been disturbed.

"I'm really here, old timer," a deep voice said, as though he could read his confusion. Stepping into the light, Mets could see that his visitor wore a canvas coat of the sort dock workers favored, along with gloves and a wool cap. The blue eyes seemed empty, devoid of any sort of emotion, studying him as though he were an insect, or an inanimate object of some kind. A chill ran through Mets' shoulders.

"You work for them, don't you?" Mets asked, setting the book down, acutely aware of the finality in his own words.

"Yeah, fraid so. If it's any consolation, they were really fine with leaving you alone until...well some things went south. When the situation goes down the drain, you have to start looking at all the options. Figure out your best play."

"You're here to hurt me."

"I sure am. But how much hinges a lot on you. See, you've got to have talked to someone out there. Told 'em what's what. And whoever you blabbed to is raising a fuss. We've gotta put a stop to it. It's getting annoying, if you get my drift. So, you give me a name, you have my solemn word, it'll all be over real quick. You don't...well then we're both in for a long night. Doesn't make me an ounce of difference either way."

"You know I'm not going to tell you what you want to know. Besides, there's security here. They'll hear you if you..."

In what seemed a blink of an eye, the space between inhaling and exhaling, Mets had a knife at his throat. It was long and clip pointed, the handle stained dark. "Now don't you worry about that, old timer. I got it covered. We're gonna conduct this little interview in my office."

Mets felt the intruder clasp his shoulder. And in the next instant, they were both gone, leaving only a burning lamp and silence in their wake.
