The Fiefdom of Southmoor

By the time your meeting had been done with Itaz it was a little past noon, some went about their individual errands, the majority had gone back to the Faded Flame and relaxed.  Dinner came and went, with lite conversation being exchanged after which everyone went and made their individual arrangements and preparations for the coming journey.

Arriving at Lake Hurst it seemed that one individual was not present but no one was really worried about it.  Mr. Harden was waiting at the gate, after letting you in, he welcomes you again and bids that you follow him.  Taking you thru the grounds again and to the same building, he leads the way through different door, hallways and stairs that lead down passing many doors.  It is quite obvious that the Mansion of Lake Hurst is a vast structure.  You arrive at a very heavy metal door that is flat and plain from all appearances, from his pockets Mr. Harden produces a flat disk, places it on the door and moves his hand in a set pattern.  The door swings silently in revealing a hexagon room, that is twenty feet across from wall to wall and ten feet tall.  On floor are many markings that even those not trained in the mystic arts know to be magical by nature and design.  Mr. Harden directs you to stand in the center loosely grouped, to Verna and Thracce he hands the magic medallions each time saying a brief incantation and then steps to the outside of the mystic markings.

"Itaz bids you safe travels and a safer return.  Should you find Teneck show him one of the medallions, they are keyed to an individual and cease to work for anyone other then who they are keyed to.  By this he will know that you are friend and ally and should gain his trust quickly."

With a quick motion of his hand a scroll appears in his hand that he unrolls and reads the incantation.  Barely visible mystic energy swirls around and without any real notion you are transported.
In the blink of an eye you were in the room at Lake Hurst the next you are in a square room made of well fit stones with many arrow loop openings positioned on each wall.  On the north side is a set of steps leading down and to the south a set leading up.  A guard is resting upon them when you a appear, he is slightly startled, standing he salutes and bids you to follow him to the captain of this outpost.  Leading you down three flights it is quite a tall tower, at the base he leads you out a door on the west side of the tower and straight to a wooden house made of rough cut logs that back onto a twenty foot tall wooden palisade with walkway.  To the left and right of the door a soldier stands guard in well used and well maintained armor, shield and short spear in hand, they are no doubt veterans.  Your escort salutes them and proceeds to open the door and shows you in, coming to attention before a very stern looking middle aged man who is brooding over some maps which can no doubt represent the surrounding area, to his right is an elf pointing to a location.  Your escort salutes.

"Captain, the guests have arrived"

Straightening from his position the Captain dismisses the man.

"Ah, excellent I was just about to send out my scout before you got here, as I have reports that she is needs to investigate.  As per request of the Order some extra rations and supplies have been secured for you as well if need be some weapons and armor but it seems you are well and ready.  Penelo here is your guide tomorrow morning and hour before dawn and she will bring you as close to the border as she feels is necessary to get you on your way.  I have strict orders from my King not to send men in until further intelligence is gained and I will not do so, but  I will should something cross the border bring the full might of the outpost against it.  One of the smaller barracks has been set aside for you tonight and you will not be disturbed.  With that is there anything that we can get for you, the cooks should have something left if you haven't eaten.  They are not bad but out post fare is not the best."

With that the Captain gives way to any questions or curiosity's and if none are to be had he shouts for the private that escorted you from the tower.

Thracce is quite excited to experience teleportation. He takes  in all the details of the room and medallion and instructions given.
He'll tuck away the medallion for safe keeping.

He expected the experience itself to feel more dramatic. "huh." is all he says when they arrive.

"If I may ask, what are the reports your scout is investigating?" he asks

"Are there healing potions in the supplies provided? When we find them, they may be injured and we will need them to be able to travel, carrying them out might slow us down.

It was faster then he thought the whole teleportation thing, but he was happy he didn't feel to disoriented.  Grudgebearer looked at the defensive structures to see how well they were built and to see if he could hear a smithy working.  When asked if they had any questions Grudgebearer could only really come up with a couple.

"What might your name be Sir Captain and do you have a smithy that I might work at."

Korin tried to yell to Itaz to go suck a lemon but the teleport just left it at "Go suck a..." oh well sometimes things are best left to the imagination. Unfamiliar with teleportation he expected to feel dizzy or something. It was exciting to think about being able to jump all around the world in such short time.

Korin introduces himself to the Captain amd thanks the man for the accommodations. He will retire to the barracks as soon as they are pointed out. Having no experience in military camps he figures it will be best to keep his head down.

Thilo comes out of the teleportation looking at Korin as he had heard just the first part of what he was saying to Harden.  Shaking his head slightly at Korin, Thilo follows along with the group and also thanks the Commander for his accommodations.  Thilo waits patiently for the others, leaning against the door jamb and meditating while the formalities are done.

The Captain holds up his hand slowing the questions coming in, although obviously not a lot.  He smiles, looks to the elf and then back at the group.

"I apologize, I had not thought to introduce myself, I am Captain Randall Nocus Knight of the Wolf.
The reports are no doubt connected to why you are here, at best it seems enemy forces are probing some of the out of the way homesteads.  By the gods no fatalities as of yet just very spooked people who are in my care.  Also none of the reports are in the area where you will be going, so it should not be a problem.

As for our smithy Master Dwarf, if you would like to use it I will have one of my men introduce you to the garrison smith.  I can't say you will be allowed to use it as it is his and he is a cantankerous person.  He may welcome the help though as I have had him and his lads working some extra time to make sure weapons and armor are in good shape should things come to pass.

In regards to the strength of the forces here, I cannot give that exact  information but you are free to walk around the garrison and ascertain for yourself.  My reason being should you be caught I cannot have specific information of that nature falling into their hands.  Suffice to say you will be safe if you can make it back to our border.  There will be scouts and scout riders every day patrolling, looking for you return.

Potions of healing I am not sure if any of the men might have those, but I can have word put out and pigeon sent to my Lord, they may have some there.  Is there any other questions if not I will get you situated for this evening and have you Master Dwarf brought to the smithy."

Captain Randall waits for anything else to be said if nothing he sends you on your way.

Thracce, Thilo, Verna and the others are shown to where their sleeping quarters will be and instructed that they may visit the mess and walk around the fort.  The soldier instructs that you are to stay off the ramparts simply for the fact that the distraction to the guards is a potential risk.

The soldier indicate to Grudgebearer that he should follow and doesn't really care that Thracce seems to be tagging along for the mini tour.  A short walk around the stone tower you arrived in, you come to the main gate and to the right of the gate you can see the smithy lit with torches as the sun has gone below the line of the palisade.  Heavy methodical hammer blows can be heard as you approach closer, the sight before you would cause most to pause for it is not a human or dwarf at the forge, rather three kobolds and a orc chained to a large stone with what looks like only enough length to reach the anvil and bellows.  As you enter the smithy the metal working stops, words are exchanged and one walks off in the direction of the captain.  The orc's eyes are down cast, his body is hideously scarred and it is difficult to look at him even for those who slavery is common.  The soldier that escorted you looks at the kobold that walked away and then at those who followed him.  He shrugs his shoulders and walks away leaving those standing there in silence.

(OCC in the words of another GM what do you do?)

Thracce walks along in silence taking in the details of the fort and soldiers. The tour of the smithy was for Grudgebears benefit. He is more interested in maps of the area and what the scouts will report when they return.

He owns several kobold blades and knows that they make quality weapons.
He is not surprised by the cruelty the orc has been subjected to but it is not his place to comment at least not right now.

He looks carefully from where he is standing at some of the weapons and armor being made and repaired, to see if the kobolds are doing "their best" work.

Grudgebearer stands stationary taking in the scene before him long enough that the annoying elf called Thracce just walks into the Kobolds smithy and start perusing items.  Grudgebearer just follows suit, not touching anything out of respect, once in a while he will look to the slave orc.  Grudgebearer did not really have a strong opinion on slavery of any kind, he had seen in Timiro and there were slaves of all races.  This creature had endured more then his fair share.

"The Captain mentioned that you may be in need of a hand as things around the area have heated up.  I am not here to cause no problem, just been awhile since I have worked at the forge.  If need be I can even run the bellows, stoke the coals what have you, give your orc there a break.
If yeah want I could even give you boys a break, just tell me what needs being done and I will get er done for yeah."

The two remaining Kolbolds do not respond to Grudgebearer's polite offer of help, either they don't understand or are just arrogant.  They notice Caspar perusing the items that have been fixed and the work is of fine quality.  There is a slight sour look on their faces as they stare at Caspar and Grudge.  A couple more minutes of awkwardness go on, when the one Kolbold who had left comes back.  Going into the smithy he speaks with the other two and finally comes and speak to both Caspar and Grudge.

"There was a misunderstanding on the Captains part, no help is required, as you can see we are doing quite fine.  As for the bellows, coal and such we have more then enough help in that area."

The Kolbold thumbs in the direction of the horribly beaten orc.

"Now if the two of you wouldn't mind leaving we have some more work to do, before this days end.  Also none of our current wares are for sale as these items are for the Fort Soldiers."

With out so much as a nod the Kolbold starts barking orders to the other two and the orc and the sound of the smithy back in work can be heard.

Jalahada little jaunt around the small fort proves somewhat fruitful in the mess hall as the cooks elder daughter is the one who serves the food to the men.  She is not to hard on the eyes a little cleaning and some fresh cloths she would no doubt make a fine house wife to someone someday.

Korin is able to find a couple places that seem viable to make a hasty retreat from the fort, that do not require the use of the rampart stairs or would draw much attention. The fort is definitely easier to get out of then in.

Thilo and Verna turned in and when others return to the barracks where they are staying will find Thilo resting in a cross legged position and Verna either asleep or maintaining her equipment.

Caspar and Grudgebearer share some moonshine into the evening and eventually doze off in a alcohol induced euphoria from his Uncle's special blend, after talking about whatever elves and dwarves talk about.

Jalahada is spit at a couple times, cursed at by most of the men, the rest give him a skewed look for his offering of whoring. The offer was not a complete waste though for his efforts as it turns of the cooks daughter had a devious side and she and a soldier smitten with her takes you up on the offer.  The evenings festivities are pleasant for all involved and it is around two in the morning when things come to a close.

The others continue in their slumber in the assigned quarters uninterrupted like the rest, the faint ringing of the smithy coming through the wooden walls.  Torches lit along the ramparts cast shadows on the inside but allow the men to see out and do not hamper their night vision.

It was something he had done before, on a number of occasion where women wanted their suitor satisfied but their maidenhood remaining intact. In the darkness of the girls bedchamber's he was instructed to carry out tasks and acts the smitten soldier wanted the cook's daughter to perform.

Jalahada carried out these tasks/acts quite well without the smitten soldier even knowing there was a third person in the room....or even that the smitten solider was satisfied by a male Elf.

Jalahada is walking back to the sleeping quarters provided.  His path taking him past where Caspar and Grudgebearer were enjoying their drink, past the main gate and the smithy.  The passed out forms of three Kolbold's around a table just inside the smithy, a large bottle of something clearly alcoholic in each of their hands with plenty of empty ones scattered on the table with partially finish plates of food, a set of dice and a small stack of coins.  By the dying embers of the forge, the large orc is curled up by the forge and had covered himself with a couple of holey burlap sacks.  A heavy fog has settled around the fort, so thick the fog that it is creeping inside wooden palisade walls, concealing a bottle that had been thrown in the earlier dice game among the Kolbold's.  Jalahada ends up kicking the bottle with his foot sending it skittering along the ground.  The guards on the walls turn to see what caused the commotion, Jalahada's Elvish grin is the last thing they both see as the wooden gate explodes in a shower of various sized splinters and chunks of wood of the once sturdy front gate.  A a twenty foot tall giant and his wooden tree club buried in the gate, he struggles to wrench it free.  The twang of short bows can be heard in the night as screams of some guards being hit.  All followed by the battle cry of what can only be the voices of goblins and orcs.  One of the Kolbold's is dead a chunk of wood sticking through his abdomen, his hands clasped around his face one of surprise.  The other two are walking around the smithy dazed from the sudden blows to the head from shrapnel.  The Orc is as far away from gate as his chain will allow him, desperately pulling on it to break free.  He appears to be rather uninjured as the stone base of forge had protected him from any debris.  It is only a matter of seconds before the giant retrieves his giant club from the wall and will completely clear the gate.  Heavy ladders can be heard being placed along the walls in the front and Orcs and Goblins climb to the top and jump down to the ramparts.

With the sound of the gate being smashed Caspar and Grudgebearer are close that they will be second on the scene with Jalahada.

At the sleeping quarters, you are all resting peacefully, when a loud cracking sound wakes you all, followed by the sound of the door to your resting quarters being kicked in.  In comes five orcs, weapons drawn and bloody, the head of the guard that had escorted you to Captain hanging from his belt.

What do you do?

Having no intention of getting raped by an Orc (rumor has it that Orcs had ugly barbed cocks) throws her ‘bed dagger’ at the head/face of the nearest Orc.

She then rolls out of bed, wearing nothing but a flimsy night gown that does nothing to hide her gender. Grabbing her nearby bow Verna let’s loose at the nearest three Orcs.

He  conjures Armor of Ithan and draws his swords. He glances to see if the dwarf is up to the challenge but does not linger. As he rushes to the shattered gate he conjures a magic net across it to block the giants progress, perhaps trap him and his club in it. He can cast it up to 100 ft away, covers a 10 x 10 area.

Jalahada, is showered by splinters and chunks of wood as the gate is shattered. The queer as a platinum coated piece of copper Elf then hides in some nearby shadows, and promptly disappears.

Rushing into a fight wasn't his thing. Waiting for some unsuspecting Orc to run by only to be pulled into the shadows by an effeminate male Elf and choked to death on the other hand was well within his ability.

When some unsuspecting Orc does run by (hopefully long before the battle ends), Jalahada quickly exits his shadowy hiding place, wraps his garrote wire around the Orc's neck and pulls him back into the shadows. The Elf then grapples with the Orc wrapping his legs around the sub-humans legs, tripping it up and dragging it to the ground.

Verna's dagger fly's with accuracy in the direction of the orcs, forcing them all to dodge, narrowly missing them all.  It is in that time as the Orcs evade the dagger that Thilo's and Korin's quick incantation's go off in succession.  The Orcs all seem to be in terror and unable to move from their location, completely incapacitated.

The foremost orc to the group of three, falls injured to the ground, three arrows protruding from his chest, blackish blood pooling from his lips as he gasps for oxygen from a punctured lung.  The other four intruders remain stuck, frozen in fear of some unseen force.  Thilo seems to have melted into the shadows and cannot be seen, Verna's wispy night attire hugs her feminine form her shape is non to hard on the eyes although the situation makes it resistible at the present time.  Korin is prepared to meet out vengeance for interrupting a fine night of sleeping.

(Next Melee sequence Verna, Thilo, Korin....what do you do?)

Grudgebearer stood there looking the fool at the front gate calling on Caspar to stop his pranks.  The giant spots Caspar casting his spell, with a massive heave the giant wrenches his club loose just mere seconds before Caspar's magic net falls where the club once was.  With another massive swing the giants club makes small work of the front gate but it is caught up in the magic net which fell on the gate.  A path is clear though beside the jumbled mess of gate pieces and the giants club, orcs and goblins come in past the giants legs.  From behind Caspar Grudge and Jalahada the Captain of the fort comes with soldiers and form a defensive  line just in front of Caspar and Grudge, their large tower shields lock into place ready for the small charging force of orcs and goblins.

Jalahada who was there with the group has disappeared.  A goblin passes the spot of deep shadows where Jalahada had been, effeminate hands snap out and grab the passing goblin. The faint sound in the darkness of something struggling for breath is the only evidence that someone maybe there.

(Next Melee sequence Grudgebearer, Caspar, Jalahada....what do you do?)

The sounds of injured men and monsters, weapons clashing can be heard throughout the fort area.  The initial assault on the fort is over a small scale battle has commenced.

Korin tries to resist the incoming magic but is caught off guard and fails. Luckily it is just a boon from one of his own companions. He activates his telekinesis abilty and begins flinging matress tops, cots, small tables etc. at the orcs near the door. After the combustible materials are piled onto the orcs and hopelessly stuck in the carpet of adhesion Korin uses his last attack to fling a lit glass cased lantern into the midst of the subhumans.

Korin turns towards Verna.

"I scouted a couple good routes of egress from this camp. What say we use one of them to get the fuck out of here?"

Korin gathers his belongings and makes for a window, back door or other means of escape.

The four orcs are simply unable to do anything being frozen in fear by some unknown terror and immobilized by Korin's carpet of adhesion, Verna's four arrows hit true in vital organs.  They are already dying as Korin adds material and flames to the group of four, the horror in their eye's as they feel themselves start to burn to death.  The rising flames consuming the bodies of the orcs, they slump to the ground the stench of their burnt flesh and the billowing smoke start to fill the room, it won't be long before you succumb to smoke inhalation.  There is no exit other then the one which the orcs came from, as the rooms of the fort lined the exterior walls of the fort.

(Next Melee sequence Verna, Thilo, Korin....what do you do?)

At the gate the orcs and goblins crash into the defensive line formed by the keeps soldiers and Grudgebearer.  Grudgebearer is assailed by multiple blows, his deft ability with a shield is evident as all incoming attacks are parried and he counters leaving one opponent dead and a couple others injured but more come at the line from the gate.  What looks to be ten goblin archers stay just past the giants feet and let loose a volley of arrows at the group.  Two soldiers are critically hit on the front line creating a temporary gap that a lone orc makes it through and charges at Caspar.  Grudgebearer is engaged against two goblins and an orc.  The giant with somewhat unnatural agility dodges Caspar's magic net leaving his club stuck in the gate and moves forward towards the line.

Seeing that there wasn't time to fully get dressed here, and getting dressed in the middle of a battle would not be the best of ideas, Verna quickly puts on a pair of pants and her boots. It would be slightly uncomfortable without her smallclothes but there wasn't time. She then grabs her quiver and slides it over her head, the strap of which easily bisects her breasts, giving no allusion to others the she was a woman. Last she grabs her weapons belt and adjusts it to fit on her waist.

With the fire out by the time she's partially dressed (pants, boots, and her nightgown covering her upper body Verna makes her way to the door, agreeing with Thilo.

"Yes, we need to gather the others and what's left of the garrison."

Korin leaps nimbly over the smoldering orc corpses doing his best to ignore the stench. Once outside he immediately assesses the situation as best he can and if there is no immediate danger he will cinch up the buckles on his leather armor, pack etc. in preparation for making a run for it.

Thilo had come to learn that a majority of the world did not understand the ways of magic and people had great mistrust of people who controlled other worldly powers.  And it was an understandable fear, who was to know other then the words of the individual that their magic was attained with with years if not decades of arduous study and not out of some dark pact to demonic or evil god forces.  Yes Thilo was all to aware of the mistrust of spell weavers.

As the Orc comes within range of Caspar his forward speed and the reach of it's long sword catch Caspar slightly off guard catching you along the shoulder, by passing your magical armor.(9sdc)  The ensuing melee has Caspar taking advantage as the orc is overwhelmed by the speed and quantity of attacks.  With in ten second the orc is dead on the ground.

As the goblin archers prepare another volley Caspar's incantation of magic appears over head, panicking the goblins scramble to run away, all to no avail.

Grudgebearer cleaves the head from one of the goblins he is engaged with, the swing causing you to over extend.  The large orc seizes advantage, striking with his short sword with two powerful blows that send Grudgebearer staggering backwards.(46 dmg.)

Stepping forward to within twenty feet of the defensive line, the giant starts sucking in a large volume of air.  Falling forward into a push up position the giant lets loose a breath of fire along the defensive line.(Flame Breath Strike 10)

Verna, Thilo and Korin as you exit the sleeping quarters you can't see the flame breath itself but you can see what looks like a massive bonfire was lit and then fades away.  There are enemies about, but they are engaged with the fort soldiers.  You cannot see your compatriots from where you are.
