CecIly -- August 15
Cecily is at home in Boston. 9 in the morning. She drinks coffee and reads the letter that just came in the letter.

The rejection letter, with Moore's handwritten apology.

But she's not going to just let things rest, is she? Maybe she can uncover some of that mismanagement that she mentioned to Starkweather and Moore!

CecIly -- August 15
Cecily sighs heavily, and sets the letter down on the kitchen table. Disappointed, but not surprised. She knew before she left the room that she wasn't going to be on the expedition -- really, as soon as Starkweather spoke. The way he looked at her when she walked in the room, the way he was dismissive of whatever Dr. Moore said. Did what she said even matter? Well, it probably didn't help, she thought. A cloud of should haves and if onlys came flooding into her brain, until she shook her head, stood up abruptly and said, much louder than she intended, "NO!"

The squeak of the chair on the hardwood floor helped jolt her back into the present. No. There were good people, people like Berty and...the one with the mustache, Vladimir something? And people like Dr. Moore. If she could find any other information, at least they'd be going in with their eyes open. The other expedition wasn't prepared - how could they have been? They were expecting snow and ice, like any other expedition. But the fossils they found - were any of them sent back? Did they even have the proper tools? Of course Lake had some, but did he have any idea how old they would be?  And this "Pabodie drill" - that sounds fine for taking ice core samples, but how much damage would that have done to the fossils?

For the next hour or so, she went back through the newspaper clippings she had filed away in a folder, making notes, drawing a rough map of the area explored. The work of Wegner, and Holmes - could continental creep be responsible for the surfacing of these impossibly ancient layers? The magnetism of the poles? She shook her head. There was too much she didn’t know about those fields. She should focus on the things she was good at.

She started a list of things to investigate:
* Were the “specimens” returned to Miskatonic?
* Contact McTighe - radio operator
* Dyer and Pabodie - at MU
* Is Danforth an MU student? Ropes?

Cecily paused for a moment in her research, and realized her coffee was now cold and she had never finished her toast. Looking back over her notes, she chuckled. “It’s all at Miskatonic, isn’t it? It isn’t that far of a drive.” Pacing in her kitchen, she started thinking out loud. “They said they weren’t leaving until fall, so there’s a fair chance Moore is still there. And if he isn’t, or if he is and he doesn’t want me coming out… well that’s fine, I’ve got the names of a half dozen other people to check in with.”

Resolved, she crossed over to the telephone and tapped the receiver. “Yes, hello. Operator?  Could you connect me to the main switchboard for Miskatonic University, in Arkham, Massachusetts, please?”

"Let me connect you with the Geology Department."

A short while later, a different woman's voice.

"Miskatonic University. Department of Geology. Can I help you...

"Oh I am sorry. Professor Dyer is on leave."

"Oh.  Oh yes, of course. That makes sense. Is he going to be teaching in fall term, and if not do you have his contact information?  OH! I should have introduced myself, I'm Dr. Cecily Winthrop, of Radcliffe College. It's about some work of his."

"No, Dr. Winthrop. I do not have contact information for Professor Dyer. I'm sorry.

"It's summer. There aren't many faculty in regularly."

Re: CecIly -- August 15
Cecily sighs impatiently. "Fine."

She goes on to ask about contact information for the graduate students Danforth and Ropes, and whether or not either the transcripts or "artifacts" from the Lake expedition could be made available to a fellow researcher.

[OOC: just trying to speed things up rather than trading single lines of dialogue ;-D]

"Um, well, we've got a display of samples here in the Geology Department, and a memorial board. There are some things in storage, but I'd need faculty permission.

"Danforth and Ropes -- I don't know where they are. It's been several years. I'm sorry."

OOC: can I ask for a Psychology roll, made with a penalty die since it's over the phone?

"I see. Thank you so much for your time. Have a nice day."

Cecily gets out her notes again, and flips back through the newspaper clippings.

[OOC: is there a byline on any of the Arkham Advertiser articles?)

"Hello, operator? I'm trying to reach the Arkham Advertiser, Arkham, Massachusetts."

OOC: You mean the clippings concerning the Starkweather-Moore expedition? Yes. Frank Twiddle.

A bored woman's voice.

"Arkham Advertiser."
