Regional Background - What Everyone Knows

The following information is widely known to anybody in the Sword Coast North region. Refer to the main game map for further orientation.

The mighty Dessarin River rises in the Lost Peaks, in the Western portion of the High Forest. The river runs Westwards as far as the large town of Yartar, before turning South and flowing down to the Sea of Swords, its mouth just South of the grand city of Waterdeep.

The lands of the Dessarin Valley between Yartar and Waterdeep were once at the frontier of civilization - but this frontier has long since shifted far to the North. Little of interest is considered to remain in the sparsely populated region, bounded on the East by the High Forest and to the West by the Kryptgarden Forest and the Westwood. The region is notable only for scattered settlements along the main trade routes, functioning largely as stops for trade caravans to resupply. The principal route passing through here is the Long Road, which runs from Waterdeep right up to the city of Mirabar, hundreds of miles to the North at the foot of the mountain range known as the Spine of the World.

Two extensive ranges of hills dominate the Dessarin Valley region - the Sumber Hills to the East of the town of Red Larch and, further to the North, the Dessarin Hills which stretch up as far as Yartar.

At the Southern fringe of the region, South of the fork in the river with Gaustar's Creek, the temple-farm complex of Goldenfields lies on the West bank, a day's march East of the town of Amphail. Known as the 'breadbasket of the North', this walled compound is centred on an abbey dedicated to the goddess of agriculture, Chauntea, and is one of few widely known settlements in the area. From here shipments of grain, fruits and other produce regularly travel downriver to Waterdeep and upriver to Yartar and beyond.
