Re: Loot

With a few claims  on behalf of those characters I have been NPCing - we have this.

Rook  - Obviously wants the 'Erastil'  Items - but will refuse the offer of a potion -  giving it over for party use.
Val -   has decided to retire from adventuring and settle down.  She will investigate the ring -  but would like the Bronzes to decorate her new home and remind her of her adventuring past.  She too will refuse the offer of a potion -  giving it over for party use.
Aris'ta - Her player has serious computer issues and hasn't been on site a lot recently.  I have put a claim in for the gems on her behalf.  That way when she does manage to get back, she will be in a position to catch up a bit.

Is everybody happy?

OK Guys - If you have not done so - please update your character sheets with the items allocated to you in this post.

I have amended the last section slightly to recognize that Valoria's player has returned to us  :)  I have reallocated her potion back to her and handed Rooks over to her as well.

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

Group 3 you have recovered ......  Please feel free to divide it up in this OOC thread :)

7x Arrows  - +d6 fire damage when they hit.
Boots – Boots of Elvenkind
Bracers of Armour +2
Buckler    +1
The wand of Magic Missiles (22 charges)

The stuff from the mites.
The wrapped item from the mites turns out to be an Ioun Torch.
The only other stuff of interest is 193 cp, 120 sp, and 32 gp.

Inside Tartuk’ Satchel.
There is a book that has a Scroll of Fly (arcane) hidden inside the back cover.- [Language unknown:  tewe derprocon ecee ntll dayntinceres?]

There is also a small bag containing pink gemstone chips (Rhodochrosite) they haven’t been cut or polished yet and are in a raw state  (which reducers their value) but if you find a jeweller you can probably sell them for 100 gp.
A larger bag that contains nuggets of (what looks like) silver.    They don’t have much value, probably only about 10gp.
Folded into a small sack there are seven small pouches that each contain 100gp and an eigth that contains 19 pp, a plain brass finger ring and a dozen mixed gems (10gp each)

Kethara says she doesn't want anything.  It is too hot this far south, and she will (eventually) be heading North again.

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

Well let's first determine a division process. A few come to mind:

#1. We allocate useful items to those who need them, and then tally the remainder up and divide by number of party members. For (silly) instance say, the boots go to me, the wand to Jicca and the bracers to Lex but no one can make use of the buckler, ioun torch or scroll so we add those to the gold and parcel it up

Note: the above example was ridiculous but I didn't want to presuppose who wants what so I just went in a list with the people I could think of immediately.

Pros: in general the party ends up better outfitted, as items only have half the selling value. A better equipped party survives better

Cons: incredibly unfair to those who don't get items. Depending on build, the luck of the rolls or sheer competition for certain items, people will routinely vary in who go the most swag, and those variances won't even out.

#2. Add the total value of all the treasure together and people need to purchase their items out of their share of the money. If your share doesn't equal the item's sale value, you have to pay in (and that money gets split between the party so there's a small discount after the fact)

Pros: very fair, no one ends up stronger than anyone else, as least as much as the system can organically allow

Cons: especially at high levels, the majority of a treasure share might be one or two high priced items which not even two people's entire shares will equal. Useful items will disappear to the market rather than upset the balance of the party finances.

For my part I advocate method #1 since the game gives us less access to large markets to custom buy items, so we should try to make due especially with what we can find. This does however require a lot more adjudication and discussion

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

I vote for option #1. A well equipped ally is priceless. ;)

If my math (which always needs checking) is close, it indicates 194 gp and 32 cp per each active character with 1 copper piece left over. As well as a non-magic brass ring.

Perhaps we could offer PikWek the ring along with the title of official scout of Midmarch among the Sootscale tribe for the agents of Henry de LeMaistre. Or any other suggestions.

Also, should we offer something to Zorah to help her along her journey, whether monetarily, foodstuffs, etc?

I am agreeable to whatever claims are made on the magical items and that any unclaimed items may be retained for use by any agent of Henry rather than being sold.

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

The only time option 2 does not work is when only one high priced item is given out. The price of the item that needs to be bought out is half the items value (as if it was sold).

In Pathfinder money directly relates to power. Unequal distribution of treasure will penalize certain characters over the long run.

I vote for option 2 and willing to do the calculation for my sin, if required.

I want a whole bunch of cash. Like I said, in this game cash is as good as magic items.

So now here is the problem will we be giving an equal share of the money to people who also getting a magic item?

As the two binary options stand, people who get items still get a full share of the treasure because the items aren't factored in the treasure share unless no one is claiming them. In option #1 at least, which seems to be the one the majority is leaning towards

This is of course up for modification so long as we decide before we hand out the gold. We can divide the treasure shares by one extra person and parcel that extra share out between people who didn't get any items, if that makes you feel better.

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

I would like to see an equitable split, but unless at least some of the most valuable items (bracers, wand, etc) are sold, it really isn't feasible.

An equal share of the magic items if all were sold equals about 1384 gp each. If someone wanted the bracers (4500 gp), they would owe the group 3116 gp to be equitable.

I would prefer to see someone claim the bracers and put them to good use. Same for the other items. Sure, Cass misses out on a chance for over a thousand in gold, but I just consider it a contribution (tax?) for the greater good of Midmarch and all involved.

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

Not surprisingly, I would like the Bracers, but I definitely don't have the money to pay the group back for them. So if I have to forego any/all of the mundane treasure I will.

Philosophically I prefer using magic items that are found vice just going to the magic item vendor and buying what you want. I've never seen that in any fantasy fiction I've read or seen, so I'm a fan of using what you find or are gifted.

As for PekWik, he's already been paid, so I don't think he needs anything. And there are already plans for him ;)

Just as an FYI -  I give out loot to meet  WBL at PURCHASE PRICE.  Once I have done that I feel I have met the requirement to help you keep at WBL :)  How you manage your personal wealth after that is down to you.

If you the choose to sell an item at half of its purchase price and buy some thing else at full purchase price -  That is up to you.  However, those of you who choose to make best use of the items they found, rather than working to a redetermined purchase plan -  will probably finish up with better equipment.

To my mind, if you are using monetary value of items you should be looking to share out the sale value of the item rather than its purchase price. I would also hope you would run a debt based system, so that people can take items now and pay later, if needs be.

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

Cass how are you getting 4500 as the sale price of Bracers of Armour +2 (which have a purchase price of 4000gp to begin with)?

Edit: for what it's worth, my math puts absolute shares at 898gp and 7cp, if we go with the completely egalitarian sharing. So one character could get the scroll, or the wand, perhaps the buckler?

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

If it helps your decision  making -  Both this AP and I tend to be fairly 'general' with the treasure that is distributed.  I have incorporated the list that has been 'won' by the other group over the time we have been playing.  As you can see over time, it has evened out and there has been something there for every one - even if it isn't their first choice of item.  And magical items something come from unexpected sources *evil grin*

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

Okay guys, so what are we going to do? I personally think selling magic items is a bad idea, especially considering what our DM has said. I could maybe see selling the buckler if no one wants it, but having any sort of magical armor/shield is not a bad thing.

And even if there are things we don't want, the buckler for example, it might be worth talking with the other group to see if anyone there might want it and we could do a trade.

My vote is we do the best we can to distribute things evenly, and allow those of us that want a magic item to enter into debt or something to take them.

As I mentioned before, my request is for the Bracers.

Re: GROUP 3  Loot

Let me propose the following:

We use option 2 with following adjustments. Expendable items are not included in the total as long as they are not sold. We consider magic items as belonging to the 'party' until the person who is using it can reimburse the party the items sales price.

We will also get to a point where party members will be making consumable items. The cost of such items should be deducted from party funds with party agreement. For example, Jicca will be making Cure Light Wounds scroll, she should not have to pay to make them as they are for the benefit of all.

ItemValueSale Price
Arrows Consumable
Wand Consumable
Scroll of Fly (arcane) Consumable
Bracers of Armour +240002000
Boots of Elvenkind25001250

Silver PC120 sp12
Gold PC732 gp732
Platinum PC152 pp1520

We have 2,496 in cash, which is almost 500 gp per person
