The party retreats out of the tunnel that leads to the troll cavern and back toward the surface. After traveling for about seven hours, the party prepares to set up camp and rest. As they do so, Carmeneren and a handful of other deep gnomes emerge and approach them. "I see that you are down one man," Carmeneren says somberly. "Was he lost while fighting the trolls?"

Lucien's own tone is level, deliberately emotionless. "Yes, though three of them paid for his life. We're heading back to the surface for reinforcements. We'll be back to finish the trolls." Having fought a pitched battle and then hiked through a cave for seven hours, Lucien looks haggard.
