Geri does indeed find a pile of dead dogs that were mixed in, and mostly under the main pile of brunt bodies.

"Agreed we must avenge this village and rescue whom we can, It also looks like the jotunn have spellcasters in these Black Jotunn. If at all possible we need to eliminate them as soon as possible and by any means."

Amund listens intently to the man, staring into his eyes, he than stands and yells to the sky.  "Jotunn taking slaves - women and children - and torturing, and using magic!  This is all an abomination and MUST be stopped!!  Amund will put an end to this!!!"  Amund then crouches down and, with admiration looks into the man's eyes again.  "Amund sees you are a great warrior, and not deserving of this . . . this, fate the Jotunn have put you in.  What is your name great warrior."

Hruunwulf grins widely at Amund's proclomations of the obvious.  He thumps his battle axe against his shield in approval before listening carefully to hear the man's answer.

Klaengr was about to gather everyone together to decide what to do, but noticed that Amund was about to give honor to the tortured warrior, so he waited a bit to hear what the man would say.

"I was... I was known as Steinar, the worrier..." As he said these words, the stone embedded in his chest began to crumble. As it did, his body relaxed, his eyes focusing for a moment on Amund, then on nothing.

Re: A time of ill omens

A cairn, a pile of stones, was traditional. It took a short while, but it gave each man a chance to look into his own heart. This was a stark reminder of what might happen to each, any or all of them. The message was clearly meant to drive fear into the Viking folk who learned of their actions...

As each man made his own personal decision, Klaengr spoke...

Re: A time of ill omens

Klaengr gathered everyone up to decide what to do. He liked to put things to a vote, but even when there wasn't time he wanted everyone to know the choices and what was at stake.

"We best be leaving now if we're going to find the Jotunn camp before nightfall. We either rush in now, with little knowledge of what we face, possibly in time to save the fates of some of the women and children...

OR, we stay here, go more carefully, but still probably not know much more than we know already, and probably have fewer woman and children to save.

As for me, I think... we go now. We go while we can still track the wagon. A night's snowfall will make that harder.

We go now, and we hope that whatever we face, Aegir will guide and protect us, his weapon, as we smite them down for their evil brutality.
"

Klaengr looks at the tracks to see that they can still be followed, the ones with the wagon wheels.

"We have but one choice.  We go now.  Waiting and skulking about will not save the innocents."  Dropping his armor to the ground, securing the buckler to his left arm. Smiling slightly as he checks his axe blade.

Re: A time of ill omens

Amund took the time and scratched the name 'Steinar' into his Buckler.  He stopped at the Cairn "You will always be with Amund, and Amund will avenge."

He listened to Klaengr with gritted teeth.  "You are now making sense, Klaengr.  Amund will go while the tracks are fresh and the woman and children still alive.  Amund and Geri will lead.  The tracks headed to the northwest - and beware, some of the Jotunn are larger than those Amund and friends fought earlier today."

Re: A time of ill omens

Heading north from the destruction, the party follows the4 path of Jotunn. Arrogant monsters, they fail to even try and hide their track, their route evident even in the lightly falling snow.

An hour before sunset Dragnar's bird returns, it's lone message a small pouch with five, precious pearls in it. Without even slowing the party continues northward.

As the sun's bottom tip creeps under the horizon, shadows at their longest, Vermundr and Ludvig note smoke rising ahead, pointing it out to the others...

Amund too, carefully looks around for signs of guards or lookouts.  After not seeing any (?) "As Amund suspected, those arrogant Jotunn are too stupid to leave a watch.  Amund will make them pay for their apathy; they will be concerned when they reach the gates of hell."

He bends over to talk with Geri.  "Do you smell the Jotunn stench, or is it still masked as warrior Steinar mentioned?"

Klaengr said little, and tried to remain as silent as he could, moving from cover to cover, sneaking up carefully, as they approached the source of the smoke. Hopefully they would get a glimpse of their defenses before they were spotted.

Re: A time of ill omens

Geri did indeed smell Jotunn, and even found spoor where several Jotunn and apparently their cat relieved itself.

Eagerness turned to frustration however as the party comes over a small rise and discovered that smoke was rising not from a camp, but from a bridge over a wide fjord. No Jotunn were in sight as the party approached. The bridge had spanned a chasm about sixty feet wide, the roar of the crashing ocean a hundred feet down tossing spray up, the smell of the salt water strong in the rising wind.

Upon a nearby tree, a large blue exotic bird sat, its mournful cry filling the air.

"Well, that pretty much puts a halt on it." Hruunwulf says, looking out on the burning expanse of a bridge.  There are no Jotuun walking about on the other side that he can see.  He glances at the tree from which the exotic bird is singing, gaging its height.  Will it span the sixty feet?  It would need to be eighty feet high for it to benefit them.

"Maybe the bird will tell us what happened."  Hrun says in jest.
