Re: A time of ill omens

With a regrettable shrug, Klaengr can think of no way to skip the drudgery of going around the long way. Hopefully they would find somewhere to hold up if it became too dark to go on.

"Alright, men, let us get on with it. Those ladys, lads, n' lasses will appreciate it if we get there quickly. I guess this means the Jotunn are expecting us. So be it."

Re: A time of ill omens

Amund looks over the expanse and then around at the party, and up at the bird.  "You speak in jest Hrunnwulf, but Amund has been helped by birds before, and so has Dragnar here.  Perhaps this bird can help Amund."

Amund then looks up at the bird and stretches out a hand.  "Birdy, can you help Amund?  What happened here?  Is there a way Amund can get across?"

"Tree. Maybe. Lose surprise, but could be faster. I like surprise." Ludvig was studying the gap, but already he was thinking they need to go around, and that was plain from his expression.

Re: A time of ill omens

Amund approaches the bird and asks for assistance. The bird croaks sadly. Amund notices the birds feet are actually nailed to it's perch! The nails have clearly been there for a very long time, perhaps months, perhaps longer. With effort he manages to remove the spikes. The bird is clearly in pain as the nails are pulled free, but when they come clear it croaks again, coughing up a ring that falls to the ground. The bird then falls from his perch over the edge of the cliff.

His body falls swiftly, but as he nears the water his wings spread wide, his plumage beautiful against the grey-blue of the crashing sea. Soaring out, then rising again it heads off towards the ocean...

Amund waives at the bird as it flies off.  "Amund thanks you little birdy, be free."

Amund then reaches down and examines the ring the bird coughed up.

The ring is gold, silver and some third metal not easily identified, twined together. It is a masculine cast, with no images or shapes upon, simply the twisting of the metals.

Amund smells the ring and bites it, then holds it down so Geri can sniff at it, then holds it up to Dragnar.  "What do you make of this, magic man?"

"Will that bridge the gap?  We waste time standing about.  Time that those village women surely do not have. "  Looking at the others and starting to walk toward the crossing point.

Barring someone thinking of something spectacular, Klaengr was right, and the group needs to move swiftly around the end of the fjord.

Night falls within a few hours, and travel at night would be dangerous. Does the party camp?

Klaengar said, "You are right, Vermundr. We need to make haste now, if we hurry, we may make it to their came at nightfall or shortly after. If not, we will have to find something quick, we won't have time for a normal camp. Let us move now. If Dragnar can figure what the ring is all about, maybe that will aid us later. Unless it can give its wearer wings, we must make haste now."

He starts off walking, hoping the others follow.

The party sets up camp in a cluster of small stunted trees.

Dragnar has several items he currently wishes to study, which ever he opts to examine tonight will be up to him and his own priorities.

The crashing of the water at the base of the fjord is a constant background to the evening...

Does the party build a fire? Does everyone simply wrap up and go to sleep?

"If I am to study the rings, I will require time which will mean no guard duties for myself. Which ring should I study first the one we know has something to do with plants and entanglements or the unknown ring from the bird." as he looks around to see what everyone else thinks about it.

Amund agily twirls the ring through his fingers and then reaches out to Dragnar with it.  "Examine Amund's ring first.  Perhaps it will give Amund an advantage to cross the fjord.  A friend gave Amund this ring whereas an enemy unwittingly gave Dragnar the other ring."

"Aye," Hruunwulf states, lifing the padding and undershirt of his armor to show a black, blue, and yellow bruise on his kidney. "I took a good hit to my kidney from one 'o them Jotuun. Hurts like hell.  Wasn't gonna say anything to it, but since you asked... I would not mind the help."

Klaengr uses whatever spell energy he has left before the day's end to heal his companions and then goes down to rest, expecting to be awoken for the last watch. After he is awoken at the appointed time, assuming nothing interrupts their camp, he will meditate and pray again for preparation of the day.

A time of ill omens

The small camp quickly takes form. Vermunder builds a tight berm to sleep behind, and some if not all of the others take the example to heart.

A small fire is rapidly built, black smoke vanishing quickly into the dark night sky.

Hrunnwulf had stoically been peeing blood all afternoon, but given that they were at camp he gave in and asked for healing from the cleric, who called upon the powers of the Storm God. Typical of the fiery tempered god, the healing came with sudden sharp pain, that washed over he and Vermundr who also needed tending, to be replaced with a warm comfort thru their bodies.

Dragnor took his three items, his stone, his ring, and Amund's ring, and pondered them for a short while, studying the twisted metal until dinner, then returning to the task until it was time to sleep.

The meal is bare, but the men from the distant land are used to this. Hrunnwulf and Dragnor's opinion of the meal is their own.

Hit points after two CLW, but before sleep. Sleep heals 1HP/level each night of standard damage. Serious and critical damage heal slower.

A time of ill omens

After calling on Aegir's help to mend the weapon of his vengeance against the Jotunn, Klaengr feels suddenly ready for rest. "I best get my winks in now, men, if I'm to be of any use tomorrow. Wake me if it is urgent, otherwise I'll take the last watch a few hours before dawn."

Klaengr snored softly while he rested, his dreams of a sunless sea, deep beneath the earth...
