Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

The day dawns unseasonably cold and windy. Nothing seems to be disturbed around the campsite from the previous night. The cold gusts help to dissipate the fetid smell coming from the cave opening. Everyone feels refreshed and somehow stronger than yesterday.

Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Bram had the last watch before daybreak, during which he undertook the laborious process of donning his chainmail armor.  With that done he spent a time in quiet meditation, mentally studying and cataloguing the many novel experiences of the previous day.  He was satisfied that his works were in keeping with the duties of a Glyphscribe, and that his command of Deneir's blessings had improved.

Just as the sun started to peek over the horizon Bram recalled that Mayon had handed him something the previous night.  It was a 'cut of the loot' from the chests that the halfling, Dweeble, had wanted him to have.  He'd been distracted at that moment, and so had thanked him and tucked it away in a pocket without a second thought.  He reached in that pocket to retrieve the small object and held it out on a palm.  A pebble?  He frowned, adjusted his spectacles and peered closer at it while muttering, "Hmm... igneous origination for certain, coloration suggests basalt with some iron content...  Oh, minute crystalline formations!  Interesting..."  With a slight grin, Bramwell balanced the pebble upon his knee and set to sketching it in his travel journal with accompanying geological observations.

He was still at it by the time the others began to rouse.  The group was fortunate that no dangers showed themselves during Bram's watch, because he'd never have seen them coming.

Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Dweeble awoke with a start, her heart hammering in her chest at the moment her mind registered others nearby.  She quickly reached for her swords at the belt on her waist, having slept with the entirety of her gear on, before stopping with sudden realization.  "Others...  Right.  Dweeble isn't alone right now."  She took a deep breath as she sat up, her hands fidgeting at her belt as she itched for a chance to use the traps and contraptions at her waist.  The sudden need for something to do struck her as odd.  Usually she was satisfied with enjoying the quiet and simple moments, yet for some reason this morning she needed more.

As the others began to stir and begin their morning preparations, Dweeble opened her backpack and pulled free a wax paper package of smashed biscuits and a string of leather that she quickly moistened with her water skin.  She shoved part of her breakfast into her mouth and began to chew with the vigor and purpose of a starving, wild animal.  Even as she did she pulled a dagger free and began sharpening the blade on the tight band of leather she now held carefully from boot to hand.  As she worked, she hummed a simple tune that was occasionally ruined by either her filled mouth poorly butchering a note or what might've been a grunt of anger or outrage, though she seemed oddly at peace.

Jak slept well though lightly, as he usually did, always trying to be perceptive to danger as he'd learned the hard way during his childhood. He woke up with a yawn and a full-body stretch, followed by a grin. "Wha's fer breakfast?" He chuckled and scratched himself. A mouse scurried around him and chittered before disappearing in to his pocket once more.

"We eat an' then we go back in, yeah? Everyone feelin' rested an' healed up?"

Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Bram cooked himself up a simple cup of boiled oats for breakfast, and even seemed to enjoy them.  To the discussion on courses of action, he offered some reasoning followed by a suggestion, "We do not yet know which tunnel leads to this self-styled lord's court, so any choice entails some uncertainty.  We do know for a certainty that one path is trapped, so I'd consider it unwise to revisit it.  It is unlikely that so perilous a tunnel could be the sole entrance, so I agree with Mayon that we ought to attempt the Northern tunnel first and see where it takes us."

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

As the chill wind blows through the vale, the group packs up their small camp and heads back into the gloom of the caves. No motion catches their eyes as they retrace their steps. Turning to the northern passage, they advance single file to the threshold of a dank cave.

Motionless humanoid figures dressed in dirty clothes or scraps of armor are propped against the walls. Some are little more than skeletons with wisps of hair and skin stretched tightly over their bones. Others are fresher. A few old shortswords lie on the dusty floor. The smell is overwhelming, and foul.

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Bram nearly bumped into Asano when the procession suddenly came to a halt.  Before he could ask word traveled back of what lay in the chamber ahead: corpses in various states of decay, unmoving as of yet.  He asked ahead in an urgent whisper, "Begging your pardon, friends, if you'd allow me through?  I must inspect these corpses.  If any are undead lying in ambush, I will know."  The large half-elf did his best to squeeze down the corridor, murmuring apologies for every awkward bump as he passed each of his comrades in turn.  Once he finally arrived at the other end he closed his eyes and turned his focus toward the detection of necromantic energies capable of animating these dormant corpses.

Hearing the paladin's words, Mayon can't get a good look around the corner at the undead, at least not enough to reliably attack. For now he touches a hand to his armor and murmurs softly, his armor seeming to shimmer briefly before fading back to plain leather. He wants to feel a little sturdier this time.

Mayon is using his Armor of Shadows invocation to cast Mage Armor on himself without using a spell slot or materials.

At Bram's hushed words, Dweeble pulled a pair of daggers from her belt and quietly shuffled where she stood, making sure to keep Morg between where she stood and the nearest undead creatures that still lay in wait.  She swiped her dagger eagerly in the air between herself and the dwarf, making mock strikes in preparation for a fight.  She leaned forwards after a moment and whispered simply to Morg, "Keep Dweeble safe, yeah yeah?  She's been a good girl, after all."

Dweeble's going to be following Morg if he steps foot further inside.  Other than that, she pulled two daggers out and is waiting to use them.

After following Morg into the room, Dweeble turned her back to his and lowered her stance.  Her eyes were focused on the undead in front of her now that Bram had pointed out, her daggers each held reverse-grip and poised to strike.  As the others moved into position, she gave a low grunt of effort and lunged forwards.  Her blades swept down in a deadly arc at her target before she pulled them away with another vicious grunt of effort.  She flipped her daggers around in her hands, prepared now for a more typical stab and slash in case the creature stood up from her initial assault.

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Morg, recognizing Bram's shield stance, moves closer to him and then brings down his warhammer on the unmoving skeleton(s).
Move: 5' from BG49 to BG50.

Action: attack S2 with warhammer - hits AC 26 (critical) for 22! bludgeoning.

Action surge: attack S2 if it's not destroyed (or if it's destroyed, then attack S3 instead) with warhammer - hits AC 22 for 12 bludgeoning.

From "lay motionless", I'm assuming the skeletons are prone, so attacks from within 5' have advantage while those from farther away get disadvantage until they stand up. In Morg's case it doesn't matter because the first roll of the first attack was a 20, and both rolls for the action surge was 16.

08:50, Today: Morg Danforge rolled 26 using 2d20+6, dropping the lowest dice only with rolls of 20,11.  Attack prone S2 (advantage) with warhammer.

08:52, Today: Morg Danforge rolled 22 using 2d8+6 with rolls of 8,8.  Warhammer bludgeoning damage to S2, critical hit.

08:57, Today: Morg Danforge rolled 22 using 2d20+6, dropping the lowest dice only with rolls of 16,16.  Attack prone S2 or S3 (advantage) with warhammer.

Sheathing one of her daggers, Dweeble turned her grip on the remaining weapon in her right hand, holding it more like a butter knife than a weapon as she knelt down.  Quickly, she began to check the walls and floors, shifting around the various loose skeleton and wasted undead parts as she searched the knooks and crannies in the room.  She remembered Mayon's words, even if they'd been previously lost in her hunger for loot, and the lack of commitment to the attack prior had obviously set off her suspicions.  She didn't make a sound as she worked, using her blade to ping the walls in case something was hidden or sliding the edge in the grooves in search of a trigger or edge that would open something.

Dweeble is checking the room, as much as she can quickly, for a false door, a trapped mechanism, or anything else implying that there is more to the area than the obvious paths.

The group exits the corpse-filled cave, then retraces their steps back through the narrow tunnels towards the large cavern they discovered the previous day. Though the narrow corridors remain seemingly unchanged and quiet, the oppressive weight of the rock seems to press in on them as they advance cautiously.

Reaching the room where three zombies were grotesquely costumed, they step past the still rotting corpses on the floor of the cave and take the passage to the left leading southeast.

The passage bends slowly to the right as it meanders its way through the rock. Though it is wider than the passage that led to the rockfall, it still necessitates the party to move through single file.

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

The group continues cautiously on around the corner, until a low flickering light becomes visible. The light increases in brightness as they approach a widening in the narrow passageway.

The passage opens into an enormous cavern illuminated by several guttering torches set in sconces on the walls. The floor is uneven, and the ceiling is forty feet up.

Three flat boulders near the passage serve as tables for human corpses. Severed body parts sit in baskets by the corpses, covered in dry gore. A figure in a dark hood stands by the third table, its back to the new arrivals. Matted hair juts from the hood, and the figure holds a bone needle threaded with dark cord in its hand. It slowly turns as the group steps into the chamber, and its eyeless gaze takes in everyone. The zombie wears a bloodstained apron below its cowl, and a tool belt around its waist festooned with grisly implements. It grins toothlessly. Strangely, the design upon its apron seems to depict six humanoid figures in dark red outlines.

Farther into the cavern to the west, a stone stair climbs the north wall, ending near the ceiling.

A stone slab like a counter juts from the wall across the room from the base of the stairs. From a distance numerous tools including saws and knives are visible. Four skeletons stand beyond this tool bench armed with shortbows, blocking a wide passage that exits to the west. A man stands behind the bench, calmly arranging and cleaning tools.

After a moment, all eyes slide to the figure at the bench as he looks up from his work. "Hello," he drawls at them, taking in the new arrivals. The man's dank hair sticks out at all angles, and his voice grates as it echos off the walls. "I see the sacrifices have returned. A poor decision for their existence on this plane, but an excellent decision for future thralls."

He points at the group and smirks. "Bow before the Lord of Lance Rock! Me! Oreioth! Behold my dark terrors!" With a mad hint of a cackle, he gestures toward the undead thralls and preens.

Letting his smile fade he stares into the distance and intones, "Bring them to me." Then he casts a spell, and a slight greenish glow appears around his body. The skeletons knock arrows to their bows.

Map updated. The grey squares on the map are the 3 stone slabs and the tool bench.

Lit torches are set at regular intervals throughout the large cavern, so light is not currently an issue.

Technically Dweeble acts before Oreioth, but I'll tell you now that Oreioth will cast Mage Armor on himself this round. The skeletons will shoot arrows at targets I'll determine randomly.

So let's say Dweeble and Asano are up now. But anyone can post now & include contingencies (e.g., "I'll move towards X and attack it, melee if possible"), or edit later if needed.

The skeletons pull back their bowstrings as one, and loose. One arrow strikes true through the halfling's armor, but the other arrows fall short of their targets.

The basket next to one of the corpses shifts suddenly, seemingly of its own accord.

Mid Round Update:

Oreioth casts Mage Armor on himself.

The skeletons attack Dwee, Bram, Mayon, and Jak with disadvantage due to range. HIT Dwee for 7 piercing , other arrows miss.

Now up: Bram, Jak, Mayon, and Morg.

Mayon doesn't even hesitate before he starts running, past the zombie and tables. As he does, he focuses his eyes on Oreioth and mutters a quiet spell of his own, his hands twitching slightly with the eerie dark magic. This is the one they need to focus on.

Movement + Action: Dash 60 feet to I41
Bonus Action: Hex on Oreioth. Giving him disadvantage on Wisdom checks. Mayon now deals an additional 1d6 necrotic to him with any future attacks.
Mayon is now concentrating on this spell and has expended one spell slot.
If Mayon is unable to see Oreioth or is not within 90 feet of him (I think he is but may have counted wrong) then he will do nothing.

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Bramwell slowed to a stop just inside the entrance of the huge cavern, horrorstruck by what he saw in the dim torchlight.  He'd read histories of necromancy, but those dry records had failed to prepare him for the heinous realities of its practice.  His grip on his axe-haft had tightened to the point of trembling, and he noticed then that an odd feeling had overcome him as the necromancer spoke.  After some consideration he concluded that it was a combination of fear and rage.  This sensation was rather new to him.

The paladin strode with purpose toward the undead surgeon, or whatever it was meant to be.  He cut between the gore-splattered slabs and fell upon the monster, hacking at its throat with all the might he could muster.  He called out loud enough to carry across the long distance, "You are no lord.  You are nothing more than a loathsome butcher.  This atrocity ends here!"

  • Move between the slabs to F47
  • 11 vs. AC on a Battleaxe attack against Z, dealing 11 slashing if its AC happens to be that low
  • If any ally is attacked while adjacent to me, use my reaction to impose disadvantage on that attack (gather 'round, pals!)

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

As Jak moves between the stone slabs, one of the baskets of body parts again wobbles, tips, then falls to the floor, scattering its gruesome contents. Suddenly all of the baskets start moving as severed hands crawl out of them like spiders, skittering onto the floor.

After Bram's attack strikes true, the zombie grins toothlessly and removes a long metal rod from its belt. Its face falls slightly at Jak's insult, and he misses when he swings at Bram. As it moves, Bram sees that it is the party's likenesses crudely outlined in dried blood on the zombie's apron.

Oreioth gapes at the incoming javelin but it rebounds harmlessly off his magical shield. "Take the nearest ones down," the man screeches to the skeletons behind him, pointing to the rapidly approaching Mayon and to the wall where Asano is hidden.

Then he turns back the entrance. "This dwarf will bow to Oreioth!" He points to Morg and casts another spell, then retreats behind the line of skeleton archers.

Map updated, including the 5 new arrivals (crawling claws).

Dwee & Asano are up now - Oreioth is casting Crown of Madness on Morg, and will then retreat to H19 - Morg, you need to make a Wisdom save (DC 13) to avoid its effects. You can do that before your turn. If you fail I may have some additional instructions for you before your actual post this round.

Others should feel free to post also, particularly Bram & Jak since you already know the skeletons have orders to attack Mayon & Asano.

Round 1 Summary:

Oreioth casts Mage Armor.

Asano dashes for cover.

Skeletons attack Dwee, Bram, Mayon, and Jak with disadvantage due to range. HIT Dwee for 7 piercing , other arrows miss.

Jak moves up and Viciously Mocks zombie - fail save for 1 psychic damage. Zombie has disadvantage on next attack.

Dwee is welcome to post too; we may just have to recon if needed. Sorry if I'm posting too fast - just trying to keep things moving ;).

Skeletons move closer to the workbench, to B-E25 - S1 & S4 attack Mayon with half cover, S2 & S3 attack Asano with half cover. Mayon is hit for 3 piercing , Asano is hit for 8 piercing.

Jak let out a grunt as one of the clawed hand things struck him. He glanced back and noticed almost all of his allies had left him to deal with the two claws while they ran off towards the skeletons! That was just great. Abandoned and injured, he swung at the same creature again, and once again he missed. He let out another curse.

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Bram gritted his teeth at the sound of two arrows clattering against his shield.  While none of them had been hit in this volley, it was apparent that Mayon had been pierced more than once already.  The Glyphscribe held a gloved hand above a bloody arrow shaft stuck in Mayon's leg and chanted a few cryptic syllables under his breath to summon Deneir's curative magic.  The arrow proceeded to fall out onto the flagstones, and the wound it had caused vanished except for the smears of residual blood.  "Move up!  We're nearly to them!" Bram said as he advanced nearer to the skeletons.

Jak gave a nod to Morg. "Morg, I'm happy t'help as you help me. Against this thing I could use a hand." He tapped out a rhythm on the drums hanging from his waist, humming a bit, and willing energy to flow from him to Morg. Much of the dwarf's wounds healed before their eyes.

Then he looked at the claw thing again and made a tsking noise. He was really tired of fighting these things. Jak's jibe causes the disembodied claw in front of him to pause. After a moment it continues to skitter about, but in a slow, almost half-hearted way. After a few weak attempts to threaten Jak, it slumps and slowly rolls over onto the back of its hand, fingers curled up in a loose ball. A moment later Morg's crushes its fellow against the rock with a crunch.

Mayon's blast scatters the bones of one of the skeletons in all directions. Expressionlessly, the skeleton to its right bends down, picks up one of the loose bones, and fits it to the bowstring. Both loose their projectiles at point blank range, but they bounce off Bram's shield.

Mayon sticks to his usual strategy, careful to aim so as not to hit his companions. The sooner they got this finished and took care of that necromancer, the better. It seemed his patron shared his thoughts as the surge of magical energy left his arm numb for a moment, stronger than anything else he'd cast recently.

Same plan as last time:
Action: Attack S1. If S1 is dead, attack S2.

Bramwell was glad to see the last skeleton shattered by eldritch energy.  He glanced back to the party and then to where Oreioth had disappeared deeper into the caverns, appearing anxious to carry on the pursuit.  He called out, "Is anybody wounded?  Gather to me, quickly!"  Once his companions had all arrived toward the far end of the cavern Bramwell first laid a hand upon Morg's bloodied shoulder and muttered something beneath his breath, and the dwarf's many scratches disappeared almost entirely.  He then did the same upon himself, Mayon and Asano, healing each to a lesser degree.

The half-elf breathed deeply, appearing somewhat taxed by the channeling of so much divinity all at once.  He gathered himself as well as he could and nodded to Asano, "Agreed.  We cannot allow the necromancer any more time to prepare an ambush, or to raise more undead.  We must give chase at once.  Are we all ready now?"

At the mention Dweeble was gone, Jak frowned and shook his head. "Not everyone's suited t'the life of danger, dirt an' death."

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

The group makes its way in Oreioth's wake, first peering carefully around the corner, then advancing slowly. This part of the cavern is dark, yet light from the large cavern behind calls out the dark walls of the cave in enough detail to move forward. Scattered rocks here and there are the only objects around. A steady light in the distance illuminates the way forward, and grows brighter as the group ventures forward.

As they make their way past a final natural column of stone, the source of the distant light at last becomes visible.

An oval cavern opens several feet away, forty feet wide and sixty feet long. Dark purple tapestries hang on the walls. At the center of the room stands a pedestal fashioned of severed arms arranged to clutch one another in a cone.

Cradled in the uppermost hands is a glowing crystal sphere. A dark sigil with an eyelike slit floats above the sphere.

Cue dramatic music...

Map updated. I put you in what I thought might be logical starting positions, but feel free to rearrange yourselves as you post. It's always helpful to post exact coordinates ;).

The sigil above the glowing sphere looks like this: Floating Sigil

Bram peered wide-eyed at the occult shrine down the corridor, his curiosity at the symbols fighting against his revulsion toward the grisly pedestal.  Silently, he motioned to get the attention of his comrades, then swept his finger about to point at everybody, then pointed several times down the right corridor to indicate that they should all take the same path rather than splitting up.

Trying a couple checks to see if Bram recognizes any of the symbols, or to detect any magical functionality of the crystal.  Arcana went well, at least!

Bram yanks hard on the purple tapestry, and part of it near him falls to the floor. Behind it, a rough and uneven cave wall is revealed. Various foodstuffs and clothes sit in the nooks of the wall, and some scattered coins lay nearby. Jak peeks behind the tapestry on the opposite wall and sees much the same.

After Asano approaches the pedestal, the tapestry at the back of the room stirs. Oreioth emerges, his face tilted up to regard the floating sigil with fanatical reverence.

"Can't you see it? It's the Eye! It sees your every move! Don't you fear it?" Clutching a wand in one fist, he stretches out his arms as if basking in the glow emanating from the top of the pedestal. His expression shifts between fear, awe, and malice from one moment to the next.

Map updated. I moved Jak to the closest square that was next to a tapestry.

Asano sees no reason to believe the pedestal of arms itself is magical. The sphere seems to be simply sitting on top of it, and looks like it could be removed without difficulty. The sigil floating in the air above is partially transparent, and might be just an illusion.

Seeing the others join in the fray, Mayon mutters a soft spell under his breath, allowing the Hex to take effect on the wizard's already addled mind before attacking once more. The beam swings wide, and he ducks back into the hallway to avoid whatever the wizard may send his way.

Bonus Action: Casting Hex on Oreioth--Mayon deals an additional d6 Necrotic (when he hits) and Oreioth has disadvantage on Wisdom checks.
Acion: Eldritch Blast--hits 10 AC, misses because I'm pretty sure he still has his mage armor from earlier :P
Movement: Moving back to AJ-12
Edit: Apologies, I misread the Hex rules. Disadvantage on checks only, not saves.

Bram had opted to remain silent during the exchange with Oreioth, because he would certainly have sabotaged the negotiations.  Instead he listened closely and observed the varying facets of the wretch's delusions.  When the inevitable hostilities begun he began to close with the necromancer, but he'd already teleported and then vanished through another tapestry!  The half-elf strode up next to Morg and assisted his friend in tearing down the cloth barrier.

  • Move to AT10
If Morg failed to pull down the tapestry:
  • Help Morg's Athletics check to grant him advantage (technically you're supposed to declare a Help before the roll happens, so this would be up to the DM)
  • If Help isn't possible, make my own poor Athletics attempt to yank down the tapestry:
    • 10:23, Today: Bramwell Caulder rolled 10 using 1d20+5.  Athletics (conditional).
If Morg succeeded at pulling down the tapestry:

Jak blinked for a second as Oreioth attacked Morg and disappeared. It only took him a moment to figure out that the spellcaster had ducked behind the tapestry, further enhanced by Bramwell and Morg pulling down the tapestry. Jak looked around and peeked behind the tapestry near him, and was surprised to see the necromancer coming right towards him!!

He panicked for a second and then his training and instincts took over as his mouth opened automatically and without conscious thought he called out, "What a terrible host! It's absolutely SHOCKING how ya tried t'treat your guest Morg just now!" It was lame but it was all his hindbrain came up with at the moment.

He quickly stepped back from the tapestry.

Oreioth snarls and rounds on Bram and Morg, and starts to raise his wand.  Then he staggers back into the cave wall as a blast of force shreds the tapestry and hits him squarely in the chest. A blast of ice slams into him a second later.

The necromancer goes pale, a look of panic passing across his bleeding face. Gathering himself, he quickly raises his wand again. It flashes a brilliant purple, and nine violet motes of light leap from the tip. Swirling in seemingly random directions through the air, they crash into his assailants. Oreioth flings the wand aside.

After helping to strike down the necromancer, Bram knelt at the corpse's side and closed his eyes.  He cast his divine senses outward in search of necromantic energy, both to confirm that Oreioth was truly dead and not cursed to rise again, and search for any further hidden undead.  He up again with shoulders stooped with wounds and weariness.

OOC: Using Divine Sense to detect undead or desecrated ground/objects within 60 feet.  The rest of this assumes that no immediate threat is discovered, because if so Bram would be reacting to that instead!

Bramwell turned and peered intently at the crystalline sphere with its dark sigils and said, "We cannot leave the crystal here.  I will be the one to bring it out.  When we are ready to depart, move to the corridor we arrived through."  Once the group's business was concluded and they'd all moved to a safe distance, the paladin took up the swath of tapestry Asano had prepared in both hands.  He approached the grisly pedestal, threw the shredded tapestry over it, and gingerly lifted the sphere within its cloth.

The group putters around the cave, sifting through the effects of the dead necromancer.

When Bram throws the remains of the tapestry on the crystal sphere, the sigil floating above it immediately disappears. Now that he is closer to the sphere and can examine it more closely, its form rings a bell from his prior studies of magical objects.

Bram, the necromancer's body was actually completely consumed by the fire, so there is no body left to examine. You don't sense anything with Divine Sense.

The loot you're able to accumulate from Oreioth's belongings are:
- Food, drink, supplies, clothes, and bedding, all of poor quality.

- Purple tapestries, thick but tattered and probably worthless.

- 165 sp

- 78 gp

- 4 polished jet gems - probably worth about 50gp each

- wand - definitely magical, but maybe just a spellcasting focus - Asano's first roll was inconclusive

- necklace - rusted and old-looking, the necklace is a locket. Doesn't seem magical. Despite its dingy appearance, the portrait of a lovely elven female etched in profile on the inside is still unmarred .

- crystal orb - Bram thinks this may be a driftglobe - more details after a short or long rest

What now?

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

The group exits the caves below Lance Rock with a few more possessions, a couple more answers, and even more questions. The overcast sky masks the autumn sun, and a cool breeze rustles the branches of nearby trees. Despite the relatively early hour - it must not be much past noon - the group is weary from their exertions of the morning.

The journey back to Red Larch passes swiftly however, and soon the party finds itself entering the outskirts of the way-stop town. Entering from the south, the market area visible over the scraggly grass to the east is clearly deserted, with only a solitary figure standing amid the outhouses and rings of stone in the clearing. The usual mix of townsfolk and travelers populate the Long Road.

As they enter the Swinging Sword, it's clear the common room is more populated than they have seen in recent days. In the backyard, the makeshift stove appears to be more functional. Several small groups of people sit at the tables inside, eating an odd-colored stew from earthenware pots. The group picks out Brother Eardon sitting at one table, in conversation with a gray haired man over simple plates of bread. Attendants move busily among the patrons, delivering food and drink.

At the group's arrival, one of the maids looks up at the open door and immediately drops a stack of plates on the floor. Her surprise is quickly masked by her angry curse, as she starts gathering up the shards of ruined pottery from the common room floor. At one table, a leather-clad half-orc claps sarcastically.

Another attendant clad in workman's clothes and a black eyepatch arrives with a broom and starts sweeping the shards into a proper metal dustpan. "I can clean this up, Ghileeda," the man says quietly. "The morning chores are done in the stables. Go and tell Kaylessa the questing group has returned. She'll want to know right away." He turns to the group with a rough smile. "Welcome back. Glad to see you."

After a long pull, he sighs and sets the bottle back down.

OOC:
Paying out 10-12 gold for the wine.

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Jakrynn stretched his arms wide and up over his head once they were out of the cave. He tilted his face up to the sky with a big smile on his face. "Ah! It'd be almost strange for a city boy t'long for an open sky, but bein' inside a cave full'a undead'll do that." His spirits were higher as they got closer to Red Larch. It was the closest thing to civilization nearby, and at least there would be food and drink.

As the maid dropped the plates on the floor, Jak took an involuntary step back with a frown on his face. "What'd we do t'scare her?"

When Kayless spoke with them, Jak was still puzzled and he ordered a drink but lowered his voice to ask her, "Kayless...do you know why your maid was so startled t'see us?" He hoped it was just that they thought the group had died but he feared it might be more than that - and why would that have caused her to be so startled rather than pleased or something?

Later when Mayon was responded to Morg's bluntness, Jak listened. After he made a small 'hmm' noise. His eyebrows rose a bit, "Patron..." He drew the word out questioningly, "...as in someone who pays for things an' funds your adventurin'...or patron as in the source o'your magic?"

"The latter." Mayon says softly, a wry smile on his face. "Some sort of fey creature, I think. I was a child at the time, so my memories are hazy...but apparently, my asking for help to get home when I was...lost, was all it took to form a pact in their eyes."

He quietly takes another drink, suddenly looking very tired. "And so here I am. Hunting someone who apparently angered them. I don't know what will happen when I kill him, if they'll drop the pact and take my powers or decide to keep using me. I just want the damn nightmares to stop."

Kaylessa returns with drinks and food for the whole party, as well as a bag full of gold as reward for eliminating the threat at Lance Rock. "If the ill omens and evil events stop happening, this will be money well spent," she declaims, thrusting the coins at the group.

The innkeeper regards Ghileeda the maid with a furrowed brow. "I don't rightly know why she dropped the plates - gods know we can ill afford to break more pottery around here. Probably just wasn't expecting you to return from your excursion. Some around here weren't sure you lot'd be comin' back."

She smiles and turns back to Jak. "Your actions with the brigands, and now with the situation out Lance Rock way..." she trails off. "Well, this is a small town, and folks notice them as like you. Lots of folks were hoping you'd return. Harburk asked after you, and so did Vallivoe and Haeleeya. There's tons of rumors swirling about the missing delegation, and other things too. I think you're getting a reputation for solving problems." Kaylessa winks.

Loot thread updated - Kaylessa paid her promised 50gp reward for investigating Lance Rock. We'll need to split that up before Day 5, in whatever way seems best. I'll leave that up to you all =).

The food is free for lunch today at the Swinging Sword for some reason (and down to its usual poor quality), though drinks are for purchase.

Bramwell stepped through the inn's threshold looking weary and haggard compared to the day they'd departed Red Larch.  He was jolted back to attention by the unexpected shattering of plates, and looked to the maid to find that she looked at least as startled as he was.  Strange.  He was happy to see Kaylessa, ever the welcoming hostess.  "It was a terrible business at Lance Rock, but the danger there is taken care of.  We've come away with some promising leads as to the other recent strange occurrences."

Bramwell sat heavily with his companions and gratefully accepted a large bowl of stew, which he set to wolfing down immediately.  As he ate he opened his journal to the page where he'd sketched the symbols they'd seen above the orb, and where he'd made notes and speculations upon Oreioth's ravings.  His ears perked up at Mayon's tale of his pact, and he listened intently.  "A fascinating circumstance, if unfortunate one for you, young Mayon.  How is it that this patron contacts you?  Do you know the terms of your pact, or consequences for breaking it?"  Bramwell asked out of genuine curiosity, failing to consider the possibility that Mayon may be uncomfortable sharing such information.

Once he'd settled in after his second bowl of stew, Bramwell approached Brother Eardon and greeted him and the man with whom he'd been conversing, "Greetings again, Brother.  I hope you have been well.  Has there been any news?"  The half-elf briefly mentioned what the group had accomplished at Lance Rock, and would elaborate on it if the two were interested.

"They contact me through dreams...well, nightmares. It only started a few months ago when they started showing me scenes involving Marlos. Though, I did get one earlier today in the cave when looking at the symbol, which is why I feel they're connected." Mayon says, wincing at the memory of the sudden surge of scenes and foreign words he had witnessed. "Occasionally I'll just get a sort of sense that something is trying to whisper to me, but it's not words so much as a feeling. Mostly I think they just, observe and let me use the power I need."

"I don't really know the terms or consequences though...I guess the terms are 'kill who I tell you to when I want you to' and the consequences akin to 'I'll keep sending you nightmares until you do it or go mad.' I just want it to stop, so I'm going along with it."

He falls quiet for a moment, then looks at Asano.

"Asano, are you alright? That necklace...do, do you want to talk about it?" He's eager to change the subject, but his cautious curiosity is genuine.

Jak took the food and drink brought, and immediately took a sip of his drink. He gave Kaylessa a wide impish grin. "Well, we aim t'please, an' no plans on stoppin'!"

He peered after Ghileeda and made a mental note to check her out a bit more, maybe eavesdrop on her or follow her - but he didn't want to cause some innocent girl undue fright if he were found out. He sighed internally.

At the mention of the names of the people who had been asking after them, his eyebrows went up. "I guess we should go see the Sheriff after lunch, an' maybe go shoppin'."

To Mayon's explanation he frowned slightly and suppressed a shudder. He was glad his magic was much simpler, the music of the universe.

As Bram approaches Brother Eardon, the man smiles and beckons him over. "Welcome back and well met, Sir Bramwell," the man declaims. "I was hoping you and your companions would return. I'm eager to hear tell of your fortunes, but first let me introduce you to my companion here. Imdarr Relvaunder, priest of Red Larch, meet Bramwell Caulder of-" The man falters, but Imdarr extends his hand.

"A pleasure I'm sure, young paladin," Imdarr says, looking Bram up and down. The greying man arches an eyebrow. "I must say, if you're a devotee of Deneir I would have expected to meet you at the Allfaiths Shrine before now, since Eardon tells me you have been in town for several days. Unless Deneir has reduced the devotional duties of the faithful since I'd last heard." He takes a small sip from his cup of water.

"There has indeed been news," Brother Eardon continues. "The whole town's abuzz with the details of the missing delegation it seems. News travels fast."

Imdarr nodded. "I know our fine innkeep here is hopeful that your excursion - apparently successful," he adds doubtfully, "would end the steady flow of strange occurrences in our town. But I fear she may be mistaken. Greater forces are at work here I sense, and we may not be out of the woods."

Eardon nods slowly, a sad look on his face. "The rumors continue unabated. Larmon, a local shepherd, has been telling alarming stories of freshly dug graves in the Sumber Hills. And new rumors are starting to surface about piracy on the Dessarin River. I doubt a little undead incursion nearby would be responsible for all that."

"All the same, I'm ready to hear the tale of your exploits near Lance Rock," Imdarr says. "There's no question your group has been a great boon to this town, and learning more about what we're up against will only be to the good. We are quite grateful for your efforts to thwart the threats you already have."

Asano takes a long pull from the wine before responding to Mayon's inquiry with a short grunt. He sighs, turning the locket so the warlock can clearly see the image it contains. "This is Elessina Veorin. Lady Elessina Veorin. She is the only daughter of the Veorins of the High Forest, a noble family," he breaks, taking another pull from the bottle. "A family that is directly opposed to the mixing of bloodlines, and was vehemently opposed to my grandfather being appointed to his Barony. Lord Veorin has stymied my family's growth for almost a century, and his daughter is the kindest, loveliest, and most intelligent woman I have ever met. Needless to say, that is an issue to my father and brothers. Her own affections for me are, likewise, an issue for her own family." He stops, finishing the half-empty bottle in one, long swallow.
"I haven't heard from her in over a year when she sent me this," he pulls a sheer, silken cloth from his sleeve. It is pale blue with a silverthread-embroidered unicorn rampant in the corner. He wraps it around his wrist again, pulling his sleeve over the favor. "It is...worrisome that this locket is found within the that creature's belongings."

Morg used to think Mayon was a wizard, but now thinks she's a cleric - he doesn't know much about magic.

Bramwell was humbled by the reproach in the wizened priest's words.  He replied with a nod, "You have me there, Father Imdarr.  I've been remiss in not yet paying my respects at the All-faiths shrine before now.  I confess that the many troubles plaguing this valley have occupied my mind to the exclusion of all else.  Regardless, I shall visit the shrine before leaving Red Larch again."

"Indeed.  Regrettably, we now have good reason to believe the scale of the threat to be far greater than anything a single megalomaniacal necromancer might be capable of.  See here..."  Bram retrieved his travel journal and showed the two men his sketch of the sigils that floated above Oreioth's sphere, then asked, "Do these sigils signify anything to either of you?  The necromancer mentioned a group called 'the Black Earth,' but that name is not familiar to me.  I suspect that these are vital clues to the source of these troubles."  As they spoke, the paladin scrawled down quick notes about the rumors Eardon shared about the graves and piracy, so that both might be investigated later.

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

On their journey back to Red Larch, the group may have had the strange feeling that eyes were watching them. Hidden behind trees, rocks and bushes, Dweeble had followed the party. Always in the shadows, she kept just out of their sight, like a predator stalking prey. Upon arriving in the town itself, she stealthily made her way over to the building the adventurers entered. "Swinging Sword," she softly whispered as she read the sign hanging above the door. With her hands leaning against the wall, she stood on her toes to look inside through the window. Surprisingly blue-colored eyes scanned the inn. There! She located the party, and quickly duck to avoid being seen. Lots of people inside, eating. She was starving!

...

As if one organism, most of the patrons suddenly got up and took off to their duties, leaving behind a single small figure at one of the tables. Clothed in dark leathers, and with what looks like a hundred different items strapped to her belt, a girl the size of a child is sitting behind a bowl of stew. The soft slurping stopped, and like a mice trapped in a corner she anxiously looked up from her food - her wide eyes darting from left to right between the different party members.

"Well. Do what you think is best, but don't do it 'till tomorrow or later t'day." He paused and leaned in a bit, lowering his voice. "Y'know...it IS only like...noon or early afternoon. Lil' early t'get completely plastered, yeah?" He chuckled again and took another drink of his own ale.

He set down his empty mug and finished up the last of his meal, making sure to feed his mouse as well. Then he slapped his hands to his thighs. "Right. We've a bit o'money an' I think I'm gonna take another look at the amazin' junk in that one shop."

He stood and paused, turning back. "Oh yeah! 'Fore I forget. Sheriff's lookin' for us, aye? Someone...someone not Asano...should go talk t'him soon." He grinned at Asano when he said that.

Mayon knows he could work on tracking down information on the Veorin family, though it would likely require visiting a library with a history of elven families. That wouldn't be likely to reveal Elessina's location in particular.

He could certainly try to examine the locket and see what can be discovered from that, as anyone could, assuming Asano's willing to allow it.

Realizing she'd been spotted, she scrambled off of her seat and almost knocked over the bowl of stew. She quickly grabbed her stuff and was about to take off when Mayon's kind words got through to her. She hesitated. Took a step towards the door, and stood there fiddling with the variety of tools on her belt. Finally, she turned around, reached up to grab her bowl and cautiously approached the adventurer's table. Her bright eyes assessed the position of each of them, before pushing a chair next to Mayon and quickly climbing on it - carefully balancing the bowl of stew in one hand, not losing a single drop.

The bowl stood in front of her, but she did not touch it. Keeping her head still she quitely observed each of them, before finally bursting into a salvo of questions. "How'd you get out of there? Did you kill the necro-man? Did you bash his skull? Take his gold? Take his treasure? Did your patron-god-beast come to help?" She'd clearly been eavesdropping on their conversation. "Did you pay your beast-patron?" Her gaze moved to Mayon, clearly fascinated. "What does he look like? Is he big? Is it a she?"

She flattened the crumpled paper a bit and sifted through them, looking for the right one. "Ah!" she exclaimed, stood up onto her chair, and continued to softly mumble the words on the paper.  "Hold hand in front... imagine hand grabbing object... direct arcane flux- fluxness- fluxnessness through arm..." She followed the instructions and the most observant would've seen the spoon in her bowl of stew wiggle just the tiniest bit. Maybe. It could've easily been a trick of the mind. She for one, didn't notice anything happening and after a minute of trying sat down again.

"Sometimes it don't work," she explained with a disappointed look on her face. "But maybe you can help me, huh?" She expectantly looked at Mayon. "Ask your goddess-animal to gift Dweeble with magic?"

"What I do with a wand? Dweeble prefers the leather handle of her daggers." She pulled one of her daggers from her belt and adeptly showed off her skill, twisting and turning it between her fingers and around her hand, before sticking it back into its sheath. "I do need components though!" She grabbed her collection of notes and read out what was written on them. "Fleece, fine sand, a cricket, tiny tarts.." She chuckled. "Eeny, meeny, miny, tiny tarts."

She turned around and looked at Bramwell, listening to his offer of her joining their group. A hint of a smile could be detected. She was glad the offer still stood. At first she'd been reluctant. Working together with others had so far not proven to be very beneficial for her. Though that was in part due to her selection of company - most thieves in general aren't very trustworthy. These people, however - these adventurers. They seemed like good folk. They showed her kindness when she didn't expect it. It gave her a strange feeling, one she didn't feel that often. A scary feeling it was, though.. nice as well.

"Dweeble will join!" She hardly let Bramwell finish his sentence. "Dweeble will help bash in the heads of necro-men and collect their gold and shinies! Where's the next one?" She appeared strong and determined, showing nothing of the emotional value she gave to accompanying these kind men.

After a few minutes, Kaylessa approaches Asano. "It seems you may have had too much, young man," she observes, picking up the second empty wine bottle. "Let's see you too your room, shall we?" She moves to escortss Asano up the stairs.

Asano is currently under the Poisoned condition, but he is also granted Inspiration for playing to character. We'll see how long Poisoned lasts...

Re: Day 4 - Lance Rock Part 2

Asano lightly complains as he is guided to his room, feebly gathering his assorted writings. As the innkeeper closes his door, Asano drops the papers near his pack and drops onto the bed. Sleep comes quickly, though the half-elf's slumber is plagued with half-realized fears and doubts.
