Chpt 0 - Sienna and Tethlis
Sienna furrowed her brow a little as the newcomer appeared to not understand her suggestion to take a load off and enjoy the tavern for a bit. Instead they just appeared confused and only moderately interested in her performance. The visitor also seemed to miss Sienna's gesture to come talk to her during the instrumental. Sienna sighed - her duty was to this person, but she also felt a duty to those that gathered here. The people of Daggerford didn't live an easy life, nor was it always safe. And a bit of entertainment...

...could also be done tomorrow.

At least there was a backup here tonight - she first beckoned toward and then introduced Carthus Melward. He was an aspiring entertainer and had asked to perform a duet. She had agreed before he told her the song, but she performed it with a smile nonetheless. He led it off, and she came in at the appropriate times. Both their lutes sang when their voices didn't.

A dragon has come to our village today.
We've asked him to leave, but he won't go away.
Now he's talked to our Duke and they worked out a deal.
No homes will he burn and no crops will he steal.

Now there is but one catch, I dislike it a bunch.
Twice a year he invites him a virgin to lunch.
Well, we've no other choice, so the deal we'll respect.
But I can't help but wonder and pause to reflect.

Do virgins taste better than those who are not?
Are they saltier, sweeter, more juicy or what?
Does he savor them slowly? Gulp them down on the spot?
Do virgins taste better than those who are not?

Now we'd like to be rid of him,  many have tried.
But no one can get through his thick scaly hide.
We hope that some day, some brave knight will come by.
'Cause we can't wait around 'til he's too fat to fly.

Now he has such good taste in his women for sure,
They always are pretty, they always are pure.
But his notion of dining, it makes us all flinch,
For his favorite entree is barbecued wench.

Now we've found a solution, it works out so neat,
If he insists on nothing but virgins to eat.
No more will our number ever grow small,
We'll simply make sure there's no virgins at all!

07:06, Today: Sienna Phoenix rolled 16 using 1d20+6.  Performance.

Carthus, of course, punctuated the last verse with a few pelvic thrusts to laughter from the crowd. Sienna kept her gaze down toward her lute as she blushed at her performance-mates antics and song choice. But she did smirk at the last.

Once the song was completed she announced that she was leaving the tavern in Carthus' capable hands. And made her way over to Tethlis.

She gestured to a table in the corner that was suddenly clear. Two men that had been part of the crowd moved nearby, and Sienna spoke to Tethlis. "If you request hospitality and parley, I will take you to the home of the Duke in short order, but I would be remiss in my duty if I didn't first find out who you are."

She sat, setting her lute in the corner, and waited for the other to sit. "For my part, I am the Viscountess Alessienna Greatshout."

LOL

Not sure how Tethlis would quite believe that?  Persuasion vs. Insight?

OOC: What, you don't believe Sienna is still a virgin? That's real nice.

In this case, she's not actually trying to convince Tethlis of anything. But her passive Persuasion is 16 if you want to roll some dice.

You could, of course, ask around.

More of a matter is it's hard to be honest whether your character would believe something or not when your character might or might not believe something that isn't true.  The bias is toward your own character succeeding when that's not necessarily the most likely outcome.

19:06, Today: Tethlis Adarion rolled 6 using 1d20+3.  Insight.

See, Tethlis believes it wholesale.

Tethlis couldn't believe her luck.  Perhaps the strange customs of this place would be to her immense convenience and therefore liking this time.   Her elation however only had the slight effect of making her tired frame perk up as she found momentary excitement and energy.

"How fortuitous. I am Tethlis Adarion of Evermeet.  I come seeking information on events which occurred during the Spellplague.  I have been sent to speak to elves or the descendants of elves who did not join the Retreat."

She seemed relieved.  A Viscountess, how useful they put an authority figure so front and center, normally there were all kinds of social rituals, hours of legwork and hoops to jump through.

Though it was a bit odd a human noble seemed to want to perform bawdy songs, that's certainly not how the records depicted them.  But a lot of things weren't exactly as they were written now were they?

Sienna smiled at the woman's stated reason for being here and her obvious relief. And she was an elf! How wonderful for Sienna to meet one of her mother's people. But there were formalities, not that they normally took place in a tavern, but still - here they were. "On behalf of the Duke of Daggerfell and the Dowager Duchess, welcome to Daggerfell, Tethlis Adarion of Evermeet. I will see to it that mother receives you with all appropriate honor." Sienna looked over at one of the men that had taken station by the table. He nodded to her and disappeared, though another came to take his place.

Sienna's gaze drifted back over to the elf. She ran a finger through the hair above her ears. Her slightly pointed ears. "The Dowager Duchess is an elf who did not join the retreat. And I am her descendent. Would you like to speak with me now or during your audience with mother?"

She was thrilled.  It had never been this easy.  A lot of people told the nosy elf to sod off.

"Oh if you would please.  I have instructions to make haste."

Sienna nodded. She wasn't entirely certain how Tethlis had answered her last question, so she figured she'd probe a little further. "Would you like some food while we chat? The cook here is reasonably talented."

Sienna paused as she looked over at the entrance. A man had opened the door allowing a draft into the warm interior, though the sight of the man quickened Sienna's pulse for a few moments. She quickly pushed thoughts of handsome men aside, though, as her gaze returned quickly to her guest. "How is it that descendents of elves who did not join the retreat could be of help?"

Tethlis paused and considered her stomach was in fact, quite empty.  In her weariness and excitement the thought had completely escaped her.

"Even more efficient."  She agreed.  "Though the method of operation of this establishment quite frankly vexes me.  As to your question, I believe this is what your idiom... this..."  She sighed.

"...This is awkward, do you speak the language of Eldamahr?  I did not want to assume just because you are peredhel."

Sienna smiled at Tethlis' confusion as the half-elf looked up to one of the men that had taken up position nearby. She stated a simple request. "Food and drink for our guest." He disappeared quickly in the direction of the bar.

Sienna returned her gaze to Tethlis. "This is a tavern owned and operated by a family - though it used to be a warehouse. It was converted into a place for travelers to rest and eat, and a spot for the townsfolk to gather after a hard day's work to enjoy music, drink, conversation, stories, and the occasional magician's show. The proprieter and his wife still do much of the work, but their children are now old enough to help with much of the work, and they also have a few hired hands as well." Sienna gestured over to the bar. "For example, that tiefling over there is not a member of the family. But Leliar works during the busy times for wages. She also seems to do pretty well at dice, supplementing her income when the bones roll hot."

She looked around. "While my brother, the Duke of Daggerford, is entrusted to keep the town safe and levies taxes in order to do so, our family does not own everything around." Sienna was now guessing at the vexation, but was certain Tethlis would correct the Viscountess if she was making incorrect assumptions.

{Elven} "As for the skills of my tongue, my mother made certain I knew how to speak the language of her people. I am also fluent in the languages of the dwarves and gnomes. Those are mostly for purposes of acting on my brother's behalf, though."

"That phase could easily be misinterpreted you know."  Tethlis responded in her native tongue.  "I was trying to translate the phrase, it's something of a long shot.  I am gathering information about the activities of those elves who were on Faerun while Evermeet was, for all intents and purposes, inaccessible.

"The organization of this establishment seems rather complicated for a simple tavern. I still don't understand why you are holding court here, it seems you'd want the security of a keep to me?"

Sienna smirked at Tethlis' commentary on her turn of phrase. {Elven}"I suppose it could be, at that, if taken out of context."

The half-elf listened to what it was that her Elven guest was trying to discover and considered for a moment. She looked away for a moment, then back to Tethlis. {Elven}"How much have you discovered so far? Are you aware of what became of Cormanthor during the Retreat? Or the reclamation of Myth Drannor? The elves who remained in the forest were not idle, though they were outnumbered by the Drow. Green warders, many were called. The drow and the daemonfey are said to have corrupted other mythals within Cormanthor, though there is some disagreement concerning the truth and the extent of that corruption."

Sienna took a look around at the tavern for a moment. {Elven}"And this isn't a place I hold court. It's a place that I go to enjoy not being at court. The walls that surround the Duke are strong and well-protected. The interior is decorated well enough and I get along with the staff and my siblings. But there is enjoyment I get from performing here that I don't get from plucking at my lute or playing viol for travelling nobility or for the Garrison. Though I do that as well - this is a different kind of fun."

Tethlis had to shrug.  "I am not a warrior nor of sufficient station to be privy to the details of the campaign, and the retaking of Myth Drannor is far too recent to fall under the purview of history.  Though I'd be remiss if I didn't say Cormanthor would appear to be a more logical starting place, however I suspect that was the first place they sent expeditions, and it's certainly not a place they're going to send wet behind the ears apprentices like me.  It's rather my suspicion that has been tried already and not led to any results, thus the, how did I put it, long shot approach.

"As for what I have discovered so far... I have discovered much of what we record as history lacks a considerable amount of... cultural nuance.  That's not really very helpful however."

When Sienna explained, she looked vexed.  "I... I see?"

Sienna laughed lightly at Tethlis' tentative indication that she understood. {Elven}"I do a lot of work for my brother. When I'm not needed by him, I enjoy spending time among his people. It helps connect them to us." There was a lot to it, much of it had to do with what Sienna found enjoyable and her attitude concerning her brother's subjects.

It was Sienna's turn to look perplexed. {Elven}"You are a, er, apprentice historian then? And are looking for information concerning Elves that live outside Cormanthor?"

Sienna nodded. She was even more excited to meet this woman than before she knew she was an historian. {Elven}"So what cities have you visited thus far in your search? Baldur's Gate? Athkatla? Waterdeep? And if you don't mind my asking, how did you hear about mother? And what did you hear about her?"

Unsurprisingly, at least to Sienna, food for Tethlis arrived quickly. The half-elf nodded her appreciation to the bodyguard that she'd used as a waiter.

OOC: Note that Gilhanna Greatshout, a.k.a. Ilya Phoenix, marrying a Duke wasn't exactly a secret (nor did everyone find it perfectly accaptable). In all likelihood, she may be one of the more well-known elves among the aristocracy since she married a Duke. Rumor has it she is a magic-user of some sort, apparently of some degree of power.

The wheels of judgment were turning inside this tired elf's head.  It was adding up now.

Tethlis was, of course, a bit arrogant with regard to elven reproductive purity, having had such a sheltered early life, though to her credit it was prejudice born of an ever perishing ignorance, and she was considerably more open minded than many in her situation might have been due to having read so much about the Prime Material plane.

Her fascination and unease with a half-elf had a lot more to do with social conditioning and lack of experience than an inborn dislike.  She had never quite grasped the desires that created peredhel.  Tethlis didn't know whether it was best to confront it or ignore it or be indifferent to it.  She suspected most elves didn't either.

Taking a human, even if he were a Duke, seemed a strange choice to Tethlis, but then again Tethlis hadn't wanted for the company of elves for most of her life either.  In fact she'd grown a bit sick of them at some points.

But that issue aside, the bigger problem had been Evermeet was for all intents and purposes sealed in the feywild, but those outside it were trapped as well in a sense.  It might adjust one's priorities somewhat to be caught outside, much as it likely did to those caught inside.

Besides, it had nothing to do with her mission anyway.  Tethlis divested herself of moral judgment on the subject for the moment, for she could debate internally any other time, and continued.

"Waterdeep was where we started, but we didn't stay there too long.  Well I take that back, one of us did to act as a kind of nexus and go between to track us.  We were indeed looking for elves who might know something who weren't part of the Retreat, and it's not like we have a census list.  But we learned of your mother when a particularly resourceful member of our band thought to chat up some traveling merchants."

At this point, Seinna is far too wrapped up in her conversation with the elf to notice anything else going on. That's what her brother's hidden people were for, anyway.

OOC: Total of 6, though I believe natural 1 means fail?

08:56, Today: Sienna Phoenix rolled 6,17 using d20+5,d20+5 with rolls of 1,12.  Perception, disadvantage.

This disadvantage thing is the pits.

Sienna nodded at the response from Tethlis. {Elven}"Oh, mother will be so pleased to hear that even wandering merchants are spreading her name far and wide. How large of a band came with you?" She hadn't seen anyone else enter the tavern with Tethlis, but that didn't mean that others couldn't have come in without the half-elf noticing. Sienna wanted to find out about the elves that went west as well, but that could wait until after their guest had received the information for which she had come.

Sienna looked around as she noted the arrival of the wine bottle. She hadn't seen how it had arrived, though she looked for the handsome fellow that had previously favored her with a smile. She hoped it was from him, and would certainly try to have a word or two with him before either of them had to leave.

Her attention reverted to Tethlis after her brief look around. {Elven}"Why are the elves you're looking for so hard to find? Aren't nearly all the elves that remained here the sorts your looking for? I mean, mother is somewhat uncommon, but it's not like all the elves left during the Retreat. And not all those that remained behind were bound to the wood. Right?" Sienna seemed somewhat unsure of what she thought she knew in the face of Tethlis' questions.

{Elven}"And the other 5 of your group...I take it you split up once you arrived in Faerun? Or are they nearby?"
