Re: Arrival at Berna, Poznan

There is no response to Brent's hail. The radar sweeps a few more times, and then it shuts down.

"I'm a spacer, so I wasn't here very much," Joxe replies. "If there are tunnels, I wouldn't know about them."

Veronica peruses her display. "Hm. I'm looking at the imagery we collected on the way in. There's a building about two clicks northwest of the main dome that might be the defense facility."

Re: Arrival at Berna, Poznan

"Hmmm... the radar cut out.  No response to the hail but the radar shutting off right now might not be a coincidence." He unbuckled and rose.  "With the radar off it'll be safe to move about on foot for us... and them if the response wasn't automated." Brent frowned.  "Something cued them to open fire on us.  We didn't pick up anything active on the way down until they fired at us.  I think we should investigate on foot."

Gareth begrudgingly agrees to exit the safety of the ship.

"At least one of us should remain with the ship. Otherwise I am ready to meet with whoever is out there."

Brent shrugged.  "I'll go.  We have armor and weapons from our last stop.  I'll take a rifle, pistol and a set of armor.  Who else wants to come along?"

Gareth is tempted to stay and "examine" the ship, but doesn't really trust the rest of the group without him to lead.

"I wil go as well."

Brent considers their situation.  "Everyone bring a communicator, first aid kit and some food and water.  We never know what might happen."

Joxe and Veronica arrive in the crew lounge clad in armor and carrying their weapons and packs.

"I would say to take the air raft," Joxe says, "but I don't want to give them anything else to shoot at." She points to the lift. "We can use this to reach the ground."

Brent arrives about the same time clad in armor and with a rifle and pistol at the ready.  "Good point.  I'm not willing to risk getting lucky twice in a row."  He looks around to see who else was coming.

OOG: I assume that everyone but Naimh will go outside.

"Do we use the lift, or go out through the cargo bay," Joxe asks.

"Let's use the lift.  I'd rather not open any more of the ship than necessary."  Brent runs a quick check on the others and then heads to go down the lift.  "Just two at a time.  Joxe, why don't you come with me first."

Re: Arrival at Berna, Poznan

A few minutes later, Brent, Malcolm, Gareth, Joxe and Veronica are on the ground beneath Wayfarer's belly. The ground here is packed, dusty earth with a grayish brown tint. Since the planet's atmosphere is very thin, all of the buildings and the dome are tightly sealed.

Ahead of the ship, there is a crossroad where two streets meet. To the left, the street runs toward one of the town's domes, which towers over the ship a hundred meters to the northwest. There is a four-story building across the road to the southeast, and several smaller structures beyond it.

No one is picking up any emissions, and Naimh's comm system has good telemetry links with everyone's suits. The suits' electronics are capable of sharing video and audio between them on the helmet's HUD, if desired.

Outside of their transmissions, everything is quiet.

"Brent, you should let us combat types lead," Veronica says as she steps out ahead of Brent. She, Malcolm, and Gareth form up ahead of Brent and Joxe in a loose combat formation, and move out at his command. Joxe stays close to Brent.

OOG: If anyone wants to do something different, please post your intended actions.

Gareth moves behind the other "combat types". Hopefully having someone in front and behind will help him survive the first volley.

"You are hard on your officers," Joxe observes.

"Oh, it's not as bad as all that," Veronica chuckles.

The ship landed at the south corner of a crossroads with streets leading NE-SW, and NW-SE. The nearest dome entrance is to the northwest.  Another dome is about a half kilometer to the northeast. A small building is across the street on the east corner of the intersection.

OOG: Where to?

Brent laughs softly.  "Hard on the officers but usually most effective."  He points to the northwest.  "The signal is in that direction.  Let's get into the nearest dome and see what is beyond it."

Re: Arrival at Berna, Poznan

The advance to the nearest dome's portal occurs without incident. Naimh's sensors detect nothing beyond background radiation, and no one sees anything. The atmosphere is too thin for sound to carry, so no one hears anything.

The road here is paved, and covered in a thin film of dust from the ever-present wind. More reddish-tan dust and fine sand lies in small drifts against curbs and other objects on the ground.

When the group gets within fifty meters of the dome's portal, Veronica rocks to a halt. "Look!"

Everyone looks where she sends a pointer through the comm to everyone's helmet HUDs. The portal is closed, but there is a half-meter hole in the dome just to the left of it.

Brent zooms in on the hole in the dome and shakes his head. "Looks like they were punched through with some kind of energy weapon.  There was fighting here before the end."  He looks sympathetically at Joxe and then nods to the dome. "Let's get there and undercover ASAP."

The portal is closed, and it is pockmarked with burn marks and gouges.

"I think you're right," Joxe says with a sigh. "Maybe one of the other portals is in better shape."

"They were run from the main power net," Joxe says as she steps up closer to the portal. "There were also backup generators, but I doubt that they are operational."
