Away Mission
It takes everyone a few minutes to suit up, move into the airlock, put on their EVA pack, and exit the airlock.
Outside, the ponderous bulk of your ship stretches aft; the massive cargo containers loom behind the hangar bay just aft of the crew section. The system primary is little more than a very bright star at this distance, and even the largest of the inner system's habitats are invisible.
The ring fragment you are orbiting dwarfs the freighter, a mountain of pockmarked and fractured rock stretches in all directions, blocking your view of the planet beyond. Holding station at two kilometers' distance, the ship you have come to see hugs a fragment barely longer than the vessel itself.
The group sets off toward their objective, with Brent in the lead. He moves with the ease of long practice, his suit beacon a guide for the team's nav computers. As you close in, you are able to see more detail, including writing on the hull in a language none of you can read.
Soon, you see a cargo bay door and a personnel lock, both appear to be sealed. The ship shows only a few dings and superficial punctures from micro-meteor strikes, and the paint is faded and covered in dust. The landing legs are extended, and a set of cables anchored in the rock are attached to the gear legs. To the engineers in the group, the ship's hull appears to be properly aligned, and there is no sign of damage to any of the external fittings.
Your sensors are picking up the still-faint radio signal on a very low frequency band that isn't in use anymore. It appears to be originating from somewhere in the forward part of the ship. Your heat sensors are picking up a single small source from somewhere amidships. Everything else is quiet, and at about the same temperature as the ship's surroundings.
