That is pretty wild Marissa. :)
Aldo Rathmus:
Good points, Saliq, about the 2nd edition settings. I have a 3E/d20 version of Spelljammer in a Dragon Magazine that I was dying to try, but I didn't have a game going at the time. I worry about cultural insensitivity, but I do like the Arabian- and Asian-inspired settings that have been released.
Yeah, I'm a big fan of Zakhara (
Arabian Adventures) and Kara-Tur (
Oriental Adventures.) The former I was around for and still have a couple of the books, though I've never actually played a game. I thought the Sha'ir (a wizard subclass based around dealing genies) was incredibly cool, and to be honest still do. The Land of Fate itself seemed to offer a lot of opportunities for adventure - intrigue in vast and cosmopolitan cities, adventures on the high seas, exploring mysterious islands and forgotten ruins in sweltering jungles.
As for
Oriental Adventures my initial interest in that was spurred after buying several second hand copies of
Dragon in the early 1990s (which was also how was introduced to earlier AD&D generally.) I particularly one issue (
https://forgottenrealms.fandom.../Dragon_magazine_151) where the combination of fantastic art, bizarre monsters ('what is a Wang-Liang?') and general coolness ('you mean I can play a literal shapechanging fox?') won me over. Eventually I ended up buying PDF copies of
Oriental Adventures and
Kara-Tur. In retrospect - and keeping in mind my playing experience is non-existant - the rules seem unbalanced and overcomplicated, but the setting and character concepts still resonated with me.
I agree cultural insensitivity can be a concern, but I think when handled well there is a lot of great material there. :)
