Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

Background reminder:

You have entered the Sanatorium and have somehow remained undetected, having taken out some robots, a guard in the entryway, and a guard entering the room where you are at.

The person running it appears to be named Dr. Marvin Boot.  The guards appear to be KLC commandos like those who attacked the train.  You are still trying to figure out who murdered LeGrange.  However, provided with the information you just took from the computer room, Zzik'Ti will be able to capture and convict all known KLC members, and neutralise all Vrusks with implants.

Signs have pointed in this direction, as well as strange lights seen from the area, even though there should be no ships coming or leaving.  You also have traced the origin of the strange brain implants to the Sanitorium.  The computer data confirms it all.

You open the door and look into the next room where the voices are coming from, your weapons at the ready.

You see a man wearing a doctor's uniform. He is a tall swarthy individual.

The man is interrogating a Vrusk who seems dazed and heavily medicated, perhaps with telol. Two monitor screens sit on a desk next to a subspace radio. As you enter, the radio is receiving a message that appears to be coded. On the desk are reports. Reams of scientific data are all around.

As the man sees you entering, he looks surprised and then jumps for an intercom button on the wall while grabbing for the laser pistol holstered at his side...

Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

The man sees he is outnumbered and abandons his plan to push the intercom, instead diving for cover behind the desks as he still draws his pistol.

You fire shots at him.  Two make solid hits before he gets behind cover, and you hear him grunt in pain.

"You're making it very hard to kill you," he says.  "I suppose you killed Gartik and took his vehicle and weapons. Very resourceful.  Yet you still know nothing.  Come toward me and I'll destroy all this evidence and you and your friend here."

When he says "your friend," you look at the Vrusk he was interrogating.  It is Sik'Triksta Sa'Shr'It'Rezz, the female Vrusk you saved from thugs on your first night out of the ship during the riots.  She was the one who pointed you to a place to stay, and she worked as a shuttle pilot before losing her job after an unexplained explosion at the colony where she was working.  She had to take up a new post as a monorail technician.  She was very friendly to you.

When she hears your voice, although drugged, she says, "His name is not Dr. Boot.  It is David Dever, one of the founders of the KLC.  He wants to know everything I know about you."

"Shut up," says Dr. Boot (aka David Dever).

Dever also sees the grenade coming his way.  He fires as he dives for protective cover under the desk instead of at its side.  His shots go wide, but this gives you a clear view of him for just a moment.  That is enough to put deadly shots in his head.

Dever goes down just as the tangler grenade explodes behind him.  The tangler also snags up Rezz in its tangles, but she is very drugged.

Your quick thinking with the grenade saved you from having Dever hit the alarm or intercom, so your presence is still unknown throughout the rest of the facility.

Dark Side of the Moon - Day 10-3

It takes awhile, but you begin untangling the dazed Vrusk pilot.

Meanwhile, the others begin scouring the room for information and valuable data.

You find the following:

JACK LEGRANGE IS ALIVE!:  You saw him murdered in front of your eyes as you exited quarantine, but these records show you that he was not killed, but a decoy.  The unwitting double was named Troy Trans; this is who you saw killed at the starport.  Even worse, you find that he was killed at the direction of LeGrange.  LeGrange has convinced all of Kraatar that he was actually killed, when he in fact had previously fled to Artemis Base on the moon.  That was part of the strange sightings of spacecraft leaving this area.  LeGrange had hoped that his "murder" will tip the balance of Vrusk-Human relations from antipathy to civil war.

LeGrange is currently at his secret base on the moon Setarz, making the final preparations for the release of the deadly Fumiga Virus, genetically engineered to affect only Vrusk, into the atmosphere of Kraatar. This will kill off ALL the Vrusk inhabitants, and in the ensuing chaos Legrange will "return from the dead" to take up the leadership of "his people".

Dever's calculations and experiments unearthed a fact which (had you not killed him) Dever was about to transmit to LeGrange:  Unknown to Legrange, the virus will react with Kraatar's atmosphere to threaten all life forms on the planet. One week after being released into the atmosphere, the virus will have killed all Humans as well.  LeGrange doesn't realize this and still plans to release the virus.

The Fumiga Virus:  Legrange discovered a deadly virus which appears to affect only Vrusk, killing all who come into contact with it within 6 hours. He intends to release this into Kraatar's upper atmosphere, but, unknown to LeGrange, the virus will mutate into an even more deadly strain. This new strain will kill not only Humans, but most other life forms on the planet, turning Kraatar into a world devoid of life in a week.</b>

You also learn the following:

As an expert in bioengineering Legrange has supervised extensive alterations to his form. His skeleton is enhanced with the equivalent of an internal exoskeleton . Legrange also has a tight-beam computer link implanted in his brain, which allows him to communicate with all computers on Artemis Base.

Jack Legrange was born at his parents' farm in the Quazzt's Depression on Kraatar 60 years ago. His early life was spent working on the farm, but at the age of 18 he entered the hospital in Gozzorf as a medical student. It was here that he first became involved in antiVrusk activities and, along with David Dever, founded the Kraatar Liberation Corps. For 8 years he studied at the hospital, and secretly organized attacks on Vrusk installations and trade houses. He was forced to flee Kraatar after the RIK raided a KLC meeting at the hospital. Legrange escaped to the starport and boarded a starship but most of his fellow conspirators were caught and imprisoned.

After fleeing Kraatar, Legrange wandered around the Frontier taking any work he could find. A successful prospecting expedition provided him with enough money to establish Trojan Enterprises. Since its foundation, Trojan Enterprises has expanded rapidly, with LeGrange's work on bio-engineering and cybernetics being in great demand. His recent advances in the technique of limb and organ regeneration have earned him science's highest award, the Fulbourn-McCoy prize.

No-one had suspected that Legrange is involved with the KLC. In fact, he is supplying weapons to them and financing their activities. Eight years ago, he established the High Peaks Sanatorium (where you are now) on Kraatar as a front for the KLC. The clinic provides psychiatric and physical therapy to over-worked Vrusk. All Vrusk who enter the clinic for treatment, undergo a "minor" operation, under the cover of stress-alleviation therapy. During the operation a control device is implanted in their brains. The device affects neural impulses and enables a creature's brain to be pre-programmed to carry out certain tasks

The Fumiga Virus:  Legrange discovered a deadly virus which appears to affect only Vrusk, killing all who come into contact with it within 6 hours. He intends to release this into Kraatar's upper atmosphere, but, unknown to Leg range, the virus will mutate into an even more deadly strain. This new strain will kill not only Humans, but most other life forms on the planet, turning Kraatar into a world devoid of life in a week.

NOTES ON DESK

On the desk is Dever's half-finished investigation regarding the likely effects of the missile on Kraatar's ecology. Reams of scientific data describe the nature of the missile's payload, its development at the mining base and the plan to release it into Kraatar's atmosphere. It then goes on to consider the effects of the virus on Kraatar's ecosystem, but this section is inconclusive. Using your party's  environmentalist skills and studying this for 2 hours (yes, it takes this long to free It'Rezz from the tangler), you realize the enormity of the devastation that the missile will wreak on Kraatar's ecology, including the destruction of all life.

You also remember that Dr. Tariel Nuna told you that LeGrange could be very helpful in helping solve the Datasphere sent by the "Shadows of Rakon" regarding the imminent multidimensional attack on the galaxy being orchestrated by the Qantariate, through coordination with the evil race of Sathar.  Tariel had been very saddened to learn of LeGrange's assassination.

After hearing all of this Rezz offers to fly you to the moon.  She heard there was a ship somewhere at the Sanitarium, as well as a lot of weapons and artillery, if you need it.  But being a hostage, she doesn't know where.

In reply to GM Heath (msg # 18):

"We need to get this information to our RIK contact so he can start to try and de-escalate this from his end.  With Le Grange still alive, that changes a lot of things!  We needed him for our research and he's now, not a martyr anymore.

We're going to have to go and get him and we're going to try and have to take him alive!  If Rezz is wiling to fly us up to the moon to get him, we're going to need to find their weapons cache here.  Let's get cracking people.  We need to find out if there's anyone else left in this place left to defend it or liberate them."

"I know I shouldn't be saying this, but we need to go to the moon. If we get this information organized so that it points out just how deadly the virus release will be to humans, and then get close enough need to dump it into the computers at Artemis base, Le Grange may balk at releasing the virus. Since that information won't come from you, you'll be able to approach Le Grange and ask for his help with the datasphere. We Vrusk can hide on the transport, I suspect Doc and I could both use some down time."
S'Krllk makes a curious circular motion with his secondary arms, then goes on, "when the universe is trying to kill you, it's just its nature. When the pirates start whacking you with the electro-whips, they're just doing their job. But when your own kind start treating your friends like sub-sentients, it gets a little depressing."
